First Look At Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, In English

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 may be the Nintendo DS’ swan song in North America. Atlus has the strategy RPG set for release in early 2012 and sent us screenshots of Shibuya in ruins.

The picture with the newscaster and "Sterbacks Coffee" is the QFront building, right in front of the scramble crossing. Io’s right, earthquakes aren’t the cause of the disaster. Japan is under attack from the Septentriones, mysterious invaders named after different stars that make up the Big Dipper. Devil Survivor 2 begins in Tokyo, but the story will take players to other Japanese cities like Osaka and Nagoya too.

looking forward to this as much as anything! can’t believe it’s actually going to come out in the US. Thanks ATLUS.

I like how the status screen looks, compared to that in the original Devil Survivor (something about blue always looks nice). And I’d forgotten how awesome this game’s cover looked! Still haven’t beaten the first DS… but eh, I’ve got time. So many games I still need to beat…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Have to admit it despite the graphics…
I personally prefer a techo looking status screen.

  • RablaAndrews

I WILL KICK YOUR ASS, ALIEN ICE CREAM. YOUR TIME IS NEARLY HERE.

  • Shinji Kazuya

    Oh, can’t wait for this one! Now if only Devil Survivor Overclocked would come to Europe… ;_;

  • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

On one hand the Japanese cover was too cluttered, on the other hand the light blue doesn’t have the same punch than the dark blue. Hmmm.

Anyhow, that pictured septentrion can go to hell. Seriously.

Looks Awsome really Great….will come for Eu too I guess

The last great DS game in English.

    • kylehyde

A nice way to say goodbye to the DS, I think that I’m going to buy a cake when the credits of this game began to roll.

  • imaguni

Ahh, good, I was wondering when we’d get some updates! I quite like the English cover, personally.

  • riceisnice

Does that girl store household items in her chest or something?

    • Okuni-chan

      I think its a tray (o GAWD I did NOT just say that…. v .v)

  • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

I haven’t played the first game yet, i’m waiting till i get a 3DS and the 3DS version.  I’ll definitely give this a try after that.

  • Solomon_Kano

    The presentation, so slick!

This is definitely on my list of “DS-games-to-grab-after-I-get-a-3DS-because-I-refuse-to-buy-another-DS”. It’s a lengthy title for a lengthy list.

  • AzureNova

I can’t wait to play this! I will be pre-ordering and getting this first day. If they decide to make a DS2 remeake for the 3DS then thats on my list too lol. Devil Survivor is one of the great games that makes me love them all over again. =^_^=

  • http://www.facebook.com/ryne11 Ryne D. Sawders

    Pants…. Getting…. Tighter…..

    • Okuni-chan

      O_O;

Excitement in pants is a good thing lol ^_^

You need to lose some weight, buddy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/ryne11 Ryne D. Sawders

If I lose any more weight I will have to buy another new belt, or there will have to be more announcements to keep my trousers up

  • sinGestalt

Hmm… I wonder… This looks really really awesome, but I hope it comes out as an overclocked version as well. Maybe I’ll just get both >.<

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Oh god, I want this. Ghostlight, you guys should pick this one up for localization in Europe! :D

  • Kawashima

So is it not a 3DS game? The case doesnt have the 3DS logo on it.

    • Yesshua

It is not, it’s a plain old vanilla Nintendo DS game.

And people say Atlus doesn’t publish niche enough anymore.  I’ll still be buying it though.  Content is key as they say.  :)

      • Solomon_Kano

They also say that Atlus is guaranteed to publish a first party title.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Somehow, I don’t think Atlus’ own titles actually count.

    • Solomon_Kano

“Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 may be the Nintendo DS’ swan song in North America.”

  • http://twitter.com/NintenPilgrim Ninten

    This > any Persona

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7WWY2NR2M643LQBEHNM2VLKZZU 강하은

Honestly, I like “Persona” (P3P) more compared to the “Devil Survivor” series, but I’m really looking forward to this game too. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

I don’t particulary agree with that but I can understand the feeling of some fans who wants more SMT and not Persona everywhere. We get Persona ports everytime, Persona 4 anime and fighting game but we only got Devil Survivor 2 as a branch new smt game.

      • http://twitter.com/NintenPilgrim Ninten

The Persona train (mainly 3 and 4) needs to slow down a bit, don’t you think? They are great games (besides 3), but sheesh, I’m pretty sure Atlus will make another version of Persona 3. But you know, in the process of milking P3 and P4 let’s actually hope for an Eternal Punishment remake though! That would be sweet. And not another version of Persona 3.

        • Solomon_Kano

You want it to slow down… but you want another remake? …Ok.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

At least it will be the first non-port for a P2 game. I’m ok with that.

          • Solomon_Kano

I’d be fine with it too. More than fine, really. Just had to wonder at that contradiction.

          • http://twitter.com/NintenPilgrim Ninten

Well, too bad Atlus mostly cares about P3 and P4 when it comes to SMT.

Or what, you guys would be so happy with another remake of Persona 3? :O

          • Solomon_Kano

That’s fine and well, but that’s not what I was saying. Had it been though, I’d disagree.

P3 got a remake. P4 is getting a remake and an anime. And there’s a fighting game that blends the two. P2 saw a remake (in part) earlier this year. It’s really not as far behind as you make it out to be.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Cannot wait for this!  Boxart looks awesome too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

YEAH! I was wating for this game. This is what we need, more SMT aside from Persona (srly)

  • Darkrise

I haven’t even gone half-way through the first game lol… I’ll still get this though.

  • http://twitter.com/NintenPilgrim Ninten

I’ve finished all of the routes in DS1 during summer. I suppose the same will happen to this one too.

  • Okuni-chan

Yay~ *Does the excited dance* Can not waaait to have this in my hands o_o

  • SetzerGabbiani

Finally.  After distractions like KOF XIII, Cursed Crusade, and Trine 2.  Something I REALLY want.

(yes, I know some people want the games I mentioned)

  • Juho Vuolo

Thank God for region free DS. I’m importing this one as soon as it hits the stores.

  • cj_iwakura

    Love the boxart.

  • http://twitter.com/keithmaxx keithmaxx

I’m sure everyone’s thrilled that another SMT game’ll be out on the DS, but I’m more excited about one that’d make great use of 3DS features.

Keep ‘em coming, Atlus! I’ll be wanting 3D monsters that really *pop out* to you when I do battles!

  • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

As a huge fan of Devil Survivor, I wish this game didn’t exist.  Oh well, I hope people have fun with it.

    • bolto

Uhhh… Why? It’s not like this is a true sequel to Devil Survivor, so it doesn’t mess with any canon if that’s what you are talking about.

And if you think the concept is stupid because it’s alien invaders, as someone who has played this game, it is actually incredibly good. It does EVERYTHING better than Devil Survivor, the only thing I really like about Devil Survivor more is the story. Not to say that DeSu2′s story is bad, just not as good. But it has better gameplay, better variety, better bosses, better moments, better characters, better music, etc.

      • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

I understand, but I still do not like the idea of this game.  I do not think it sounds stupid, but I do think it reflects what Atlus will be doing more and more now that they are owned by Index Corp.  I am sure Catherine 2 will be a great game too, but it is one that should not exist.  Think about it like this: when Tolkien wrote “The Hobbit” to much critical acclaim, what if he had just written “The Hobbit 2″ instead of moving on to the “Lord of the Rings”?  Whether or not “The Hobbit 2″ would have been good is largely irrelevant, as the literary world would have been without the wonderful narratives contained within the “Lord of the Rings” books.  It is always sad when a tremendous work of art is created and met with recognition, only for the creator(s) to be forced into producing another money-well instead of moving on to whatever other fantastic worlds live in their minds.

        • bolto

Atlus has been doing this for the longest time, Devil Survivor 2 is far from the first time they have done this. Basically, Devil Survivor is the new SRPG franchise, replacing Majin Tensei. Devil Survivor to Devil Survivor 2 isn’t much different from Nocturne to Strange Journey, Persona 3 to Persona 4, Majin Tensei 1 to Majin Tensei 2, etc. It’s nothing new at all. Devil Survivor’s story is a one-off, but they aren’t going to just use the gameplay system on one game. That would just be silly for them to develop a whole new engine if they wanted to make another SRPG right afterwords.
You’re blowing this way out of proportion. And if you really want to, you could say that this IS kind of like Lord of the Rings to what The Hobbit was, but I can’t explain why because of spoilers.

  • Sekono

Finally some screenshots~ I’ve been waiting for this game since it was announced for Japan back in May ;u; Probably the last great game to bless the DS.

  • darkfox1

I don’t want to by this gonna wait and this if a 3DS is gonna come out. Besides I need to finish Overclocked (I CAN NOT DEFEAT BABEL) I knew I should not have chose Amanes route for my first play though lol. I reaaaaaly wish this game had items o god it will help out so much.

    • Sekono

Be glad you didn’t choose Gin/Haru’s route owo; The Babel fight is waaaaay more difficult there, especially on your first run of the game

    • SuigetsuHiramura

Babel was bad, but Metatron (in Naoya’s eighth day event) is even worse.  I wish the game had MP restoring items… I can’t count the the number of times I’ve lost battles simply because I ran out of MP :(

To beat Babel, I leveled my characters into the 70+ range and had many Garudas and Behemeths to back up my party.  Holy Dance is a useful skill to have in this battle- have it set to Amane as she has very high magic.  Mediahan is also a very useful skill when your HP gets low.  Good luck XD

    • bolto

The game probably won’t be coming to the 3DS, at least not any time soon. It has everything that Devil Survivor Overclocked has, besides voice acting. It has more demons, more spells, more features, more dialog, and more unique days. And if they were to add epilogues to some of them, only two of them end with the possibility of a day afterwords. So it would basically be a port of the game just to add voice acting. Which I know to some people is a deal breaker, but I don’t see the big deal.

    • Joanna

Actually Yuzu’s route is the easiest (no Babel or Belzaboul fights), so that one is good on a first playthrough. I went with Atsuro’s route first and funny thing is, I had more trouble with Belzaboul than Babel. But keep at it, beating Babel is also a question of luck (i.e. which character he attacks first). If you’re unfortunate, he goes after your main healer, which makes the fight hellish, but if you’re lucky, he goes after someone else. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/jomatuazon.shutyourmouthforclosure JoMa Tuazon

Yep.. I’ll be waiting for the 3ds remake though, just like how i waited for SMT: DSO.. :)

    • bolto

You’re going to be waiting quite some time then, and if it turns out that years pass and they never make a 3DS version, the DS version will probably become harder to find and more expensive.

And like I said in my other reply, all they could really add at this point is voice acting.

      • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Doubt it, people over react how “rare” these Atlus games are. You can still get a copy of Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire on Amazon for under $20 new. TotA is only $30 and for whatever reason its easier to find a copy of DeSu for DS than Overclocked for 3DS. Hell, I got a new copy of Yggdra Union on eBay for $24.

        • bolto

Yes, but this is one of the last DS games, and it probably won’t have a very big print run. It’s a lot different than a game that came out in the middle of the DS’s lifespan.

          • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Yggdra Union was a VERY late GBA game. 999 and TWEWY are two other games people were saying might be hard to find in the future. Easily available still. Overclocked was just a rare occurrence.

          • Shadow_Raskolnik

Many times the print run is determined by things such as preorders and market demand and with the decline of the DS think it’s a safe bet that this game might not have as large a print run as many of previous DS games.

What I’m trying to say is that it’s better to get the game now rather then wait for a remake that may or may not come and in the end find out that you won’t be able to get this version without paying a large sum of cash. Not to mention that the decisions behind remakes are usually based off of how well the original did so if this game does poorly here because many are waiting for a supposed remake they could actually be hurting the chances for said remake in the first place.

  • Wackoramaco87

Though a part of me feels like I should wait and see if they release a 3DS version, most likely I’ll just get both, and donate the DS version to the library or something.

The game, art, and everything about it looks awesome, I can’t wait to play it! =D

    • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Yea…I’m not sure whether to wait or just buy this version…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

GOOD GOD ATLUS! I WANT THIS GAME IN MY LIFE!

  • SuigetsuHiramura

Loved the first and the second’s gonna be even better XD

  • http://openid.anonymity.com/5HuDuQyz Woot

It’s been so long since I beat the first game! (went for Amane’s route) Can’t wait to get my hands on this one…

  • XypherCode

even though this will not be on the 3DS I can’t wait to get this! loved the 1st one xD

    • CrazyKnives

Ya know, I could’ve sword it was coming out for both DS and 3DS. I wonder why ATLUS decided otherwise.

      • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Well you can play it on 3DS…

        • CrazyKnives

          Ah touche

  • http://www.facebook.com/trevor.nicolaysen Trevor Nicolaysen

Lol, I am familiar with the background of that first screenshot.  Very familiar.

    • SetzerGabbiani

Yeah, I’ve seen several instances of reused assets from DeSu 1 in this game, including the sprite for the businessmen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002908601471 Sugisaki Tetsuya

cant wait for it to be released

  • http://www.fanfiction.net/u/601368/ Sharda Colon

    *looks at first screenshot* Does she stuffed animals in there? O_O;;

Um…er.. anyway, I like screenshots. The status screens look slick and overall they look so damn awesome to look at. :D

And I love the boxart! If it was bigger I would so draw it!

Overall, I’m looking forward to playing it. (And note: this is going to be my first DeSu  game. Waiting to play the DeSu Overclocked on the 3DS when I eventually buy it. ^.^)

  • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Anyone know if this has an easy mode? I felt the DeSu for DS was cheap with its difficulty. I was looking forward to Overclocked but its impossible to find.

    • bolto

No easy mode. But the game has a lot more options, so building a good strategy is a lot easier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Will we be getting DS2  3DS version with full voice acting? :)

  • darkbartz

Yay, DeSu 2! I loved the first game and when it was difficult, it was never impossibly so. Did Naoya’s path on my first run and had to restart the final battle, ran out of MP to cast spells after unloading it all on Babel’s first form.

Hope to see DeSu’s Protagonist as a bonus boss! Maybe as a Messiah or an Overlord.

  • ShinNoKami

As long as this is also coming out for the DS and not a 3DS only release, I can totally live with myself.

    • bolto

It’s only coming out on the DS, although you can play it on a 3DS.

  • Joanna

So happy Atlus is publishing this~ I loved DeSu1~ My hype for this game is unbelievable! :D

  • sherimae1324

finally a sequel…. im sad its because… development and news ofgames for the DS are starting to….. get slow… i mean its not fair..  look at the PSP its still packs a punch! even when the VITA is released there are still more games are in development for the system. i like the DS and PSP both its hard to think that DS is nearly at its…..nooooooo please… T_T (*hugs my pink DS lite*)
