Persona 4: The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arena’s Awakening Unlocks Super Moves

By Spencer . November 29, 2011 . 12:57am

Persona 4: The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arenas Awakening Unlocks Super MovesEvery character in Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonka Arena has a comeback move. When you’re low on HP, your character’s portrait will do a cut-in and trigger awakening mode. This bumps your max SP up to 50 (that’s the gauge for Persona attacks) and unlocks your ultimate attack.

Yu Narukami teams up with his persona, Izanagi, for Cross Cutter, which has both of them strike an enemy with their swords. Yosuke Hanamura’s awakening move is Sukujaka, which increases his speed on the battlefield. Chie can make meteors rain on enemies at a 45 degree angle with Agneyastra and Yukiko can shoot a giant fireball straight forward when she casts Agidyne. For more about these awakening attacks check out our Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena hands on.

Kanji’s super move loosely the Xun Fighting Style Killing Blow smacks his opponent with a folding chair and sends them flying. Naoto Shirogane’s awakening attack is Hold Up! and she opens fire on the other player when you use it. Akihiko Sanada from Persona 3 has Maziodyne, a supercharged spell with a thunder attribute. Mitsuru Kirijo can cast Mabufudyne, a powerful ice spell. Aigis’ awakening, Great Shield of the Goddess, covers her with Athena’s (her persona) shield as she rams an enemy. Teddie’s super move Kumata’s Big Circus makes Teddie grow and hit his opponent with an unblockable attack.

Famitsu also revealed a few of the game’s stages. You can fight outside Yasogami High School, the school gate, the music room, the gymnasium, and the Mayonaka TV Entrance. All of the announced stages so far are from Inaba.

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena comes out for arcades in spring 2012. Index has a console version planned for summer 2012.

    When was Yukari announced?

I think you mean Yukiko :P

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Mitsuru Kirijo can cast Mabufudyne, a powerful ice spell. Execution?

Kumata’s Big Circus makes Teddie grow and hit his opponent with an unblockable attack.  So.. How does this translate to english? Bearzerker Attack?

  • http://www.facebook.com/diablopanqueque Juan Rowland

So….did I just read an unofficial confirmation that Yukari Takeba is in the game?  Or did you muck that up and mean Yukiko?

  • http://twitter.com/NintenPilgrim Ninten

    It’s Yukiko, not Yukari.

  • http://twitter.com/Three_Leaf_Ivy Triplicity

I believe the increase for the super gauge is up to 150 (so an increase of 50)

  • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

Man this game really can’t come out soon enough owo; I still don’t know who I’ll even main, this it’s going to be a hard decision oAo’ Also comeback moves sound like they might make for some striking turnarounds for matches; I’m always fond of fighters that give you lots of bar for potential supers >w<'

“Yukari can shoot a giant fireball straight forward when she casts Agidyne.”

    Yukari?
Yukari isn’t in this game right?
    It’s Yukiko not Yukari i think…

  • laoni

Yukari? I think you mean Yukiko XD

  • raulrain

It´s Exciting, but I remember that after fighting margaret in Persona 4 she says Elizabeth “would combine her powers with those who bonded with that soul to enact a miracle”, I think akihiko, mitsuru and Aigis (maybe even Elizabeth?!) go to inaba to learn something that could helpthem save the MC of P3, maybe we will learn a little more about that, like I said before, It´s Exciting, I can´t wait for this game !!!

    • SalomeHarras

Well, the problem with this is that even if you can release the soul, he doesn’t have a body to return to.  Their only options would be:

-Release his soul and let him “rest”.
-Create an artificial body to house his soul (similar to Aigis).
-This “miracle” is broken and is able to restore his soul into his original body.

None of these solutions actually solve the original problem however (Nyx) and I believe one of the points of FES was for the party to accept this fact and begin to move on with their lives.  Within the confines of this fictional world, you have to ask yourself if your individual, selfish desires are more important than the welfare of the whole, but the whole’s actions are the result of this catch-22 solution to begin with.

switch Minato with ken… and make let minato be a robot? sounds good to me. But seriously I’m not expecting any closure on that subject from Atlus, they would have done it with p3p..

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

Liking the premise of this game, more and more!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Juddgment Judgment8

Yaaayyy! YUKARI is in teh game! Woohoo… :D Does this mean I can say cool things like “BURN TO OBLIVION!” when I’m using her?

So in the end Yukari married Junpei and then they swapped Personas. After that Yukari accidentally blew up Junpei and now she’s looking to win this tournament to bring back her beloved Stupei.

I think I can live with these changes.

    • Hinataharem

      What?

  • AoNoise

At least Yu cannot 0wn everyone with Hassou Tobi as his Super Move xD

    • heartless141

he’s already giving everyone a handicap by not changing persona lol

      • Yu_TheKing

        Or Am I? >;3

  • Go2hell66

Just wondering how broken these comeback moves are gonna be? are we talking SFIV Ultras broken or LV3 XFactor broken :O

  • YoshTripleTails

    Bleh, comeback mechanics always suck.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

Agreed, but I’m still going to play this game because it’s going to be awesome.

    • mojokex

I don’t get what the problem is. This sounds just like KOF’s SDM. They’ve been around forever and I’ve never heard people complain about them.

Of course I haven’t played this game but this mechanic doesn’t sound bad.

      • http://twitter.com/stingisgod Yang

They’re unnecessary and artificial, and in this case against the spirit of the series: SMT is supposed to bust your balls, not coddle them. That’s how that phrase goes right?

      • Luna Kazemaru

I think they where thinking of MvC3 I mean lol at lol derp factor.

      • SalomeHarras

I remember arguments against “comeback mechanics” from as far back as at least 2001 (Capcom vs SNK 2′s K-groove).  Although people didn’t complain about it as much, you can go even farther back to 1994 with the introduction of the super meter in Super Turbo as the genesis of the “beginning of the end” in terms of comeback mechanics.

  • http://twitter.com/stingisgod Yang

Just what fighting games need, more comeback mechanics.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_472QBVARRYERRGHATSUGCVCTTA Ian

The news just keep on coming… :)

Persona 3 characters have the better moves confirmed, lol. That was why I always had Akihiko in my party in P3, so cool.

    • SalomeHarras

The only real benefit that Akihiko brought to your party in P3 was his de-buffs, and you can argue that those weren’t really necessary either.  Akihiko being used for personal preference is fine, but he’s generally inferior to Junpei in terms of raw damage output (ironically enough), and not as specialized as Mitsuru.

      • Testsubject909

Very late reply, but I like talking strategy and tactics.

It was also a bit of a gamble until you got the later iterations of Persona 3 where you could actually choose what your party members were doing…

Prior to that, Akihiko had a good basic means of dealing damage, a roulette style debuffing and some electricity spells. He wasn’t all that impressive.

On Persona 3 vanilla, Junpei was a far superior choice. Junpei was far more focused on being a fighter with a great damage output. Also his Apocalypse sword could be gained relatively early in comparison to everyone else’s ultimate weapons, providing him a permanent +10 to all stats so long as this sword was equipped. At that point, normal attacks were ignored entirely and close to then you would’ve had unlocked the game’s highest HP regen passive skill on Junpei, effectively making him a tank. On the support side, unlike Akihiko, he was 100% guaranteed to cast Rakukaja/Marakukaja.

He’s predictable, stable, strong and in Persona 3 vanilla, this was gold. It meant you could always get the result you wanted out of him and to top it off, his damage output was delicious. And oddly, he’s a more reliable healer then Yukari. Set on default, he will prioritize using a dis-charm on you in your moment of need and prioritize healing you above himself whereas Yukari will have a 50/50 chance of doing the right thing and is generally hit or miss when it comes to mass healing.

Akihiko is useful, but he is far from the best. He will dish out constant damage at an even pace and has access to debuffs which can ease you up a bit.

But honestly… It was simpler for me to just use Debilitate while Junpei would use Marakukaja and Aigis would cast either Masukukaja or Matarukaja and Mitsuru prepped herself up with Mind Charge.

I would be worried if this weren’t being made by Arc System Works.

They’re the masters at making balanced fighting games– Unlike Crapcom, who doesn’t give two shiits about balance.

    • FireCouch

      What?

      • raymk

Yea what is right.  Now I like arc and all but BB is not very balanced at all and it even took them awhile to get GG right lol.

  • pothier.adrien

I think I can already see how Yosuke’s Sukukaja will be.

Noobs with no skill will say “this move sucks”.
Then pros who have skill will use the speed boost to do incredibly long combos.
And the noobs will say “Nerf Yosuke ! He’s broken !”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Don’t you just love the world of Fighters :3 when people want characters nerfed that didn’t need nerfing

    • Mantiskilla

Yeah well get ready for it because im sure there are gonna be a lot of non fighting game players who will play this only cause its based off a jrpg.  I sure I’m not the only one who has friends who don’t touch fighting games yet are all stoked about buying this one when its pretty much the same as anything else they’ve played in the fighting genre.

  • PrinceHeir

will it have destroy moves and astral finishes from guilty gear and blazblue???? can’t wait for thid amazing game ^^ do you think they could also do a shin megami tensei fighting game? more darker than persona and it has blood, but not over the top and it has a more serious tone. that would be awesome :)

  • aoihana

Mitsuru Kirijo can cast Mabufudyne, a powerful ice spell.

Just thinking about it gives me the chills! ((((;゜Д゜)))

Some people here don’t seem to like comebacks, but don’t worry, I’m not very good, with or without them! (´Д`。)

These awakening mode super moves sound pretty amazing! I hope I can pull them off! (◕‿◕✿)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

Comeback mechanics? Again? Boy these are getting overused.

    • raymk

This come one is more like old school KOF which isn’t a big comeback mechanic really.  Also don’t you post on srk?  Your name seems very familiar as well as your post.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Great now Aksys is doing the comeback mechanic stuff :l, but its not like X-factor and its different for each character so hopefully its not something really stupid.  Though seriously, people can make comebacks without some stupid mechanic for it

    • Solomon_Kano

      *ArcSys

      Aksys = publisher

      Arc System Works = developer

  • Solomon_Kano

Cool. The dislike that people have for comeback moves isn’t one that I can share. I always feel that much better when I pummel someone even after they use a comeback move.

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

As long as it’s a good game, do you care about comeback mechanics? I don’t. It makes you stay on your toes so that you don’t get careless and is more fun for the casual player.

  • vivaluis59

Aigis’ awakening, Great Shield of the Goddess,
covers her with Athena’s (her persona) shield as she rams an enemy. Teddie’s super move Kumata’s Big Circus makes Teddie grow and hit his opponent with an unblockable attack. if they met?
