Vintage MegaTen Strategy RPG Heads To Virtual Console In Japan

By Spencer . December 3, 2011 . 12:30pm

A decade before Atlus created Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Majin Tensei was their strategy RPG series. Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis, like many MegaTen titles, begins with demons invading Tokyo. Instead of summoning demons through a Nintendo DS, you bargain for them to join your party using the game’s negotiation system.

Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis is one of the games slated for Virtual Console re-release in Japan. World Heroes 2 Jet, ASO II: Last Guardian, and Mega Man X2 are coming to Wii in December. While Virtual Console releases are rare in the West, we’ll probably get Mega Man X2 since the ESRB has it rated as a Wii game.

Huh, lucky Japan. What’s the likelihood of us seeing Majin Tensei considering everything Atlus has been brining us SMT wise?
And just wondering, why all the references to Devil Survivor rather than the main series…?

Somewhat off-topic, but since we’re talking Atlus . . . What are the chances of us seeing Noora? Have they said they won’t bring it? Or is it up the air? Unlikely?

Idk, its not like Atlus have given us everything SMT related (just most the 2 Persona games) but hopefully

      • puchinri

Well, as far as anything recent/new has gone, we haven’t really had to worry about getting SMT titles.

        • Barrylocke89

Right, but Atlus really hasn’t given us any of the VC ports of older Megami Tensei games (including SMT 1 and 2, and I believe If… as well). If they remade Majin Tensei, then I’m sure we’d get it, but until then, the chances are low.

          • puchinri

I suppose that’s true. Huh, most unfortunate.

    • Exkaiser

There’s no chance of seeing Majin Tensei.

      • puchinri

Lol, since you said it so bluntly, I somehow can’t feel at all disappointed.

    Say what you want about the Wii, but damn they get all the classic games first and it makes me sad D;

  • Solomon_Kano

Wonder if we’ll see these over here? Actually, I’m still wondering why Capcom and others don’t re-release their old games across all 3 console’s DL services. I’d love to have the X series on my PS3 and I’m sure some Xbox folks would like to have it too.

Slightly off-topic, but I have to wonder if the Wii U will have all of the Wii’s VC games at launch and if people’s Wii libraries will carry over?

    • PrinceHeir

well i alreadu given up on the whole X series on digital series(capcom is waaaay to slow)

i suggest you buying the Megaman X Collections :D

      http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-X-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B0009XBWY6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322984859&sr=8-1

i bought mine and played the hell out of X4-X6(will play the early titles later on’ it’s just that i have fond memories of X4-X6; yes even X6 is awesome :P)

as for the Wii VC games on Wii U.

i think someone already confirmed you cannot transfer it.

first of all they don’t have any specific account(well i didn’t made a nintendo club account yet i still bought the VC games)

plus i read that the games are only stuck in that Wii and that Wii Alone.

unless Nintendo gives us some sort of Passport program(like the PSP-PSVita)

then again i can’t imagine Nintendo doing that.

      • Solomon_Kano

I’d definitely buy it if I still had a PS2. Alas, mine is long gone lol. My favorite was X3.

I hadn’t thought about the Wii not having actual accounts like PSN and XBL but, now that you mention it, I suppose it wouldn’t be possible to transfer without such a system. I’m with you on doubting Nintendo would do some UMD Passport-esque program. Seems very un-Nintendo like to me.

Now I just need to know if the Wii U will have the Wii’s whole VC at launch. Having not yet bought any VC games, and now armed with the knowledge that they won’t transfer, I’m hoping Nintendo will offer those titles on the Wii U early on.

  • PrinceHeir

would love to play some of the older SMT like this :)

all we have is more Persona(which is freaking awesome!!)

but the Main Series need to get some spotlight once in awhile :P

I would love to see the Majin Tensei games in english.

Good, World Heroes 2 Jet is on the list.  Then finally, World Heroes Perfect.  :)

Oh, and then there’s Mega Man X2, big whoop.

I also recall one of the rules on the Atlus forums for asking for games to localize was not to ask for VC/PS1 Classics. The reasoning being these games take too much money to translate for the small return they will give. This was also when Atlus was still publishing niche third party games. So I would say, these won’t be coming over legally ever (unless as a remake like @Barrylocke89:disqus mentioned).

  • Joanna

There is some good news. The new update to the 3DS supposedly let’s you transfer games over to another system (I say supposedly because I haven’t got the update yet). The DSi also let you transfer your games over to a 3DS (although I heard that had a limit or something?) So if they can do it for the 3DS, I’m sure they could do it for the Wii to Wii U. Of course, that would mean you have to keep both. I personally like the deactivation/activation system Sony is introducing. I hope Nintendo eventually incorporates it. (Hey a girl can dream, right? xP )

    • Solomon_Kano

I don’t have to worry about losing mine once my Wii is gone (I don’t have any VC titles to lose lol), just curious. Thanks for the answer though. If the DSi and 3DS have transfers, then I’d imagine they’ll carry that over to Wii U. I mean, the 3DS and Wii U both represent their next generation systems, so I’m hopeful they’ll carry over features like that.

I’d like to see them introduce an activation system too. People were complaining when Sony scaled back how many activations you can have but, personally, I’m happy that it can be done at all.

      • Joanna

Yeah, it definitely has the ability to transfer as I’ve seen that option available on my 3DS. I don’t have a DSi (just a Lite) so I haven’t used it myself, but I heard there is some sort of limit as to how many titles you can transfer. Although I don’t know if this is true because I don’t recall seeing any confirmation. Just some people mentioning some sort of limit… Hopefully this was just temporary.

Yeah, I do recall a lot of people complaining but I actually like the system and would gladly take 2 activations per type of system over 5 per type of system with the new activate/deactivate Sony has introduced. It’s great because you don’t have to worry about losing your digital content should your system break or get stolen. All you have to do is go to media go on your PC and deactivate the device. It’s really brilliant and I do hope to see the other two console developers incorporating it. I’ve never broke a gaming system yet nor had one stolen, but these are worries I’ve always had in the back of my mind, so it’s nice to have a system that acknowledges these problems. :)

    • Solomon_Kano

Ok. Thanks for the confirmation on 3DS transfers. I too hope that limit was temporary. With Nintendo’s systems not really having accounts, that’d be inconvenient for some.

Yea, Sony’s system kind of killed that ever-present fear of losing everything to DD for me. The fact that you can activate it elsewhere and deactivate should something happen to that system is perfect. It’s also nice for when I go visit family or friends and I’ve got a game I wanted to play that they don’t have. I’m with you on hoping MS and Ninty adopting it. Somehow I don’t think MS will though. Their current system is a bit weird, from what I recall of it.

  • puchinri

@Joanna_T:disqus  Ah! Thanks for that, Joanna. That’s really disappointing, but it makes some sense.

    oh awesome :D

actually 2 days ago i just found Megaman Anniversary Collection(1-8 plus two unreleased games) at 19.99$

i remember playing Megaman 8 back in the day ^^

    even though im more into

i thought it was rare since it’s the first time iv’e seen it in person, but it seems it got restock at amazon and now are flying into local shops.

worth the price IMO since this will be sold out later on and people will sell this at a higher price O___O

    • Solomon_Kano

Hm… I might buy a copy just to sell it back when the price goes up then lol. Either that or, if I come across a new PS2, I’ll keep it.

I’d love to revisit 8. I used to rent it from Blockbuster all the time when I was younger.

      • PrinceHeir

hell yeah you should play it man :D

though i do have a 60GB PS3 with BC, but im playing it at my PS2 at the moment.

i only use the PS3 60GB for fighting games in the PS2(KOFXI, Samurai Shodown Anthology, SF Alpha Anthology etc)

    • Solomon_Kano

Oh man, you don’t know how happy I’d be if I had a BC PS3. There are so many games I’d get again.

Well, I guess I’ll just have to hope Sony’s PS2 Classics expand as quickly as, if not quicker than, the PS1 Classics.

      • PrinceHeir

yeah, i was still bummed at Sony taking the BC out.

yeah hopefully games like Shadow Hearts and .Hack series since despite already know where to buy them, they are a bit pricey at the moment O_O

    • Solomon_Kano

I would do backflips if they brought the .Hack series. I’m still wondering if CC2 would consider doing remasters of those. I’d take them in any form that I could get them, but I have to wonder if that might be one of the new generation of .Hack projects they’ve got going.

Never played Shadow Hearts, so I can’t say anything for that, but if it’s good I’d love to try it. I bought Odin Sphere after missing it on PS2, and I loved it, so I’ll give anything a go.

  • Joanna

    Yeah, it is disappointing. :(
Fan translations are our last sanctuary though, so at least not all hope is lost, right? :)
