Final Fantasy XIV Pay Period Starts On January 6, 2012After a year of free play and tweaking, Final Fantasy XIV will revert to a pay to play online game. Square Enix announced the cutoff date is January 5, 2012.

Beginning January 6, 2012 the PC game will cost $9.99 a month for a 30 day subscription. That’s a discounted $6.99 monthly service fee plus a $3.00 character fee. Square Enix’s original plan was to charge $9.99 for monthly subscription plus a $3.00 character fee for a total of $12.99 per month.

Users will also be able to purchase a 90 day subscription for $17.97 (or $5.99 per month) or a 180 day subscription for $29.94, which breaks down to $4.99 per month. Less than other MMORPGs, but Square Enix may change the subscription rate when Final Fantasy XIV version 2.0 comes out (and after its free trial version) in January 2013.

I would hate to be the guy who had to fix the mess that was FFXIV.

it’s a really unfair position, since not only was the game a poorly handled rush-job, but the higher ups are expecting the game to get back on it’s feet from from it.

If I can say anything about current Square, is that they’re ambitious, but only until they actually get into the process of making the final product. XIII was a nother fine example of it, and FFXIII-2 is on the way.

It’s no wonder even they’ve realized their brand name is damaged. . .

Here’s an Idea; when you have a good thing going; don’t MUCK IT UP.

I’m just waiting for the eventual renovation that takes the classic formula, and brings it into a new light; in the same way Resident Evil brought itself back from the. . . er, dead. The old-school RPG gamer in me still wonders why they never just rolled with what they got so beautifully right with FFIX.

O_O (Salutes Final Fantasy XIV) I shall be back in 1 year when 2.0 comes out, but shall not forget the times we had.

You’d have to be insane to be paying for the game in its current state. That preview screenshot looks interesting, but it might as well be from a completely different game.

Luckily FFXIV right now isn’t too bad a game, so I guess I might put some money aside and keep playing. I’d hate to miss something cool, since the current Dev Team are lovely guys.

So hyped for 2.0 as well.

I can’t think of a single game that would be worth paying $10 a month for, nevermind one with as damaged a reputation as FFXIV has.

I used to pay 20 a month to play phantasy star universe on two consoles. But hey, that’s just me.

they REAAALLLY need to take a page from oh… almost every other mmo on the market now and offer it free to play with an optional VIP subscriber package and cash store. It did wonders for dragging new users back into lotro. All killing unpaid accounts is going to do is chase away the last few users who might have cared.

“All killing unpaid accounts is going to do is chase away the last few users who might have cared.”
i don’t think they mind. see, the game is going to get revamped no matter what. once 2.0 hits, it is going to be like a second launch, with another 30-day free trail period. that will get most of the people that hung around to see the changes that were made but unwilling to pay at the time to see what the game is like all over again. at that point, if they enjoy it, they will put up money. in the mean time, there is no real downside to getting whatever revenue you can while the revisions are being made.

we don’t know, maybe by Jan 2013 they will have a free-to-play system in place and anyone who is paying right now will get a bunch of free stuff and extras and DLC for free (as long as they continue to subscribe).

This actually reminded me to check and make sure I had no payment methods set up on my old account.

I would have been quite mad if in January I saw a $10 deduction for FF14 on my bank account.

Just got an email that SE is going to discontinue all accounts so that no one is accidentally charged once this goes into effect.

I’m not going to stick around for XIV 2.0 due to lack of time and friends to play with, but I truly hope it does well.

  • eilegz

should be free to play… why cant they imitate dc universe model which so far its working

So it’s going to meet it’s cruel end on January 6, eh? Good to know.
