Fumito Ueda Still "Working Hard" On The Last Guardian

While Sony Computer Entertainment has not addressed rumors about Fumito Ueda’s departure, the creator of the Last Guardian assured fans he is still working on the PlayStation 3 game.

"Recently, I have been getting a lot of questions… don’t worry, as usual, I’m still working hard on The Last Guardian," Ueda tweeted. Ueda also reminded fans that December 6 is the tenth anniversary of Ico. He did not comment on rumors about being a freelancer in his Twitter feed.

Ueda was supposed to meet with press and show The Last Guardian at Game Developer’s Conference, but plans were canceled at the last minute.

Well thats good, though I dont think anyone doubted he had stopped working on it.

I think most of the concern was regarding the capacity of his involvement, not so much if he was still involved at all.

I say let the man work, he’s probably had enough trouble as it is with Sony.

What makes you think “he had troubles with Sony”?

SCEJ pretty much revers him and his team. His previous games although they didn’t sell much were very crucial for the playstation’s brand image and that’s why they have given him free reign to take as much time as he needs.Shuhei Yoshida always speaks with the best words when it comes to Ueda and Team Ico.I’m sure many other Sony studios are jealous of SCEJ’s treatment to Team Ico.

If he decides to go freelancer after the Last Guardian i’m sure it will be by his own will, not because “he had troubles with Sony.”

After all this time, I’m expecting a perfect game.

    • Solomon_Kano

Don’t set your expectations so high then. That’s just asking for disappointment. That was part of the problem when FF XIII came out. I expect this to be great, but perfect? That’s a bit much.

      • MrRobbyM

Let me reword my original comment. I’m expecting a very well made game.

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah. Well I’m right there with you then.

No such thing as a perfect game.

If you mean a game that gets 10s across the board by reviewers then you’re referring to one of three types:

      1. A game that’s so enjoyable you’re able to completely ignore its faults.
      2. A game where reviewers feel they have to give it top marks or else they’ll be lynched by the fans.
      3. A game where the reviewers are paid by the developers or advertisers to give it top marks so it’ll sell better.

Or sometimes a combination of the three.

  • Solomon_Kano

Good, good. Now off to the corner of my mind where I relegate all games without release dates (Versus, Six Days in Fallujah, the next ZOE, etc).

I can wait for this, better a well polished game than something rushed.

I’m pretty sure that Last Guardian’s long development time has nothing to do with whether Ueda became a freelancer or not.

Team Ico is a very small studio (around 50 people),the project is very ambitious (does anyone remember the design patent that resurfaced some years ago?that sounded very innovative) and Ueda is a perfectionist who has the ok from Sony to take as much time as he needs.

He needed 4 years to develop his games for PS2.With the difficalties most Japanese studios had with current gen development (even much bigger studios than Team Ico) it’s really no wonder that Ueda would have needed much more time than that.

Good luck for mister Ueda! I will be supporting him! I read in Andriasang that he is a SEGA fanboy, this is a honour for the SEGA fans! I am looking forward for last Guardian!

Some game deserves first-day purchase. This game is one of them.

Of course he is working hard. Not for one moment did I doubt that, what I was worried about was whether he will will continue to be a part of team Ico.
