Nippon Ichi’s Diving Into Social Games And Online Games

By Spencer . December 16, 2011 . 1:02pm

Nippon Ichis Diving Into Social Games And Online GamesNippon Ichi, developer of the Disgaea series, is expanding into social games. The company opened subsidiary in Japan called Dion Entertainment that will focus on social games as well as online games.

Dion Entertainment is already staffed with employees that have online game know-how. Dion Entertainment will plan, produce, and manage titles in the social and online game markets.

Social games are on the rise in Japan and console game makers have been adapting key franchises like Persona, Monster Hunter, and even Final Fantasy for smartphones. Given the popularity of Disgaea in the region, I wonder how long it will be until we see Disgaea Social: Prinny Tamer.

What do they have that would sell well over here?  Android-based things, I’d imagine.

Even then, social gaming over there via phone is way more popular than it is state-side and has been a thing for much longer there than here.

There’s a Disgaea 1-based Item World game already out on phones and things, isn’t there?

I’m not a specialist, but I’m going to guess Brand awareness plays a good role here on top of continually generated profit.

What I hope for is that they make a non-intrusive, highly entertaining, non-forced micro-transaction, strategic cooperative and competitive pick up and play social game with long term investments and possibly even release information or additional content and bonuses for console and handheld releases from within said social game.

Why? Because in the first place, if that happens said social game would be pretty damn good to begin with so the last tidbit would just be icing on the cake.

But that’s a highly unlikely item to be had.

If I hear the term “social game” again, I’m throwing my computer out the window.

Defenestration is not in the term social unless your computer is getting tossed into a mosh pit outside your place.

      Huh…..

      Hmm….

      Should I?

      ….

      Social game.

  • Yamaneko22

I perceive this as a rather bad news…

    • Testsubject909

As long as it doesn’t halt their creation of excellent handheld and home console titles. I don’t mind.

I see it as good for their finances.

    nis and flash games=doesnt compute!

What is with all the interest in social gaming lately?
    I’m starting to scare myself.

    • Testsubject909

      Profit. It’s always about Profit.

To be specific, it’s a model that’s easy to make micro transactions work for and it serves as a good point to spread out to a larger audience meaning that you get the chance to have a wider spread exposure and since they’re social by nature, it means that the renown of your company expands even further.

Also since it targets a lower demographic, it increases the invitation to people to become gamers or to look up other titles that they’ve made.

      So really it’s mainly win/win.

Weren’t we already supposed to have an online game? Anyone still remember the Phantom Brave MMORPG?

… IIRC they said it would be released in 2011… guess it got hit during the mass game cancelling.

EDIT: lol, didn’t see it in the links down there.

    • Testsubject909

There are many online games that simply don’t seem to go through…

I’m still waiting for Blade and Soul…

  • Jrpgfanatic

Wait, didn’t NIS recently state that they had little interest in social games?

    • Testsubject909

      A long while back.

Personally… i’m actually curious how the Persona social game plays.

I mean, if the social game is a bit like a portable monster rancher where I train my persona and can have cooperative tasks or PVP against other people who play the Persona social game…

I wouldn’t mind having that on my android.

  • Kitestwinblades

Touch all my favorite series BESIDES .hack?  WHY!? Heck if anything- Dot hack needs to be more social. Fans have wanted an online .Hack game for YEARS.
    A REAL MMO. …*ahem*

I’m interested to see what direction they take with this. I mean Nippon Ichi games are usually for the Hardcore.

    • Testsubject909

Well… maybe they’re avoiding it because the .hack series isn’t just a game but a prediction of the future if ever they made a .hack game.

No, no wait, that’s ludicrous… Okay I have no idea why they’re not doing a .hack MMO.

      • Oni123

But no one would play a .hack MMO for fear of getting data drained and slipping into a coma 8D
