Next "Trails" Game Is Trails Of Nayuta And It’s For PSP

By Spencer . December 20, 2011 . 10:02pm

Falcom unveiled the next entry in the Trails series today and it’s not for PlayStation Vita. Trails of Nayuta is in development for PSP and slated for release next year. Falcom will introduce a new cast of characters and gameplay systems with this title.

Aside from a teaser trailer, Falcom sent out one piece of concept art. It appears there are four floating worlds or islands linked to a satellite. There’s a satellite in the game’s logo too, which is strangely missing the Legends of Heroes branding all the other Trails titles carried. Hmm…

    Oh tha-
    >PSP
Well crud we aren’t getting that…we are hardly getting Trials in the Sky.

      There are few flying judges

      • Solomon_Kano

        Bahaha.

  • Go2hell66

Now if we could just get a hype trailer like that Ao no kiseki one :D

  • SalomeHarras

I take it this isn’t related to Zero or Ao no Kiseki then?

  • http://vanilladice.deviantart.com/ Dice

    We’ll see it in 2020 maybe…

  • http://twitter.com/SilverCitizen Silver Citizen

lol I give up on the Trails series. It’s better that way.

    • SolidusSnake

      sad but true

  • Solomon_Kano

What is Nayuta? That also showed up in one of those SE trademarks. Is it just a random name or what?

Anywho, this is great for JPN PSP owners but not so much for us. It’s a struggle as is for XSEED to bring us the first trilogy and people still want Zero and Ao. So, realistically, I don’t see us ever getting this. It’s a sad thing, but I refuse to get hyped up like it’s a given that we’ll see this.

I look forward to seeing more on this nonetheless.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Yeah, Nayuta showed up twice this week! A coincidence though since I don’t think companies plan for trademark reveals.

Nayuta is a name, so I guess somewhere in the universe there are two Nayutas that play a key role in future games.

      • Solomon_Kano

        Ah. Pretty cool coincidence then.

        • http://twitter.com/endlesshistory Endless History

It’s definitely a coincidence. SE’s trademark is ‘Nayuta no Michi’ and Falcom’s title is ‘Nayuta no Kiseki’.

Michi is kind of like a path, like a road, specifically.
Kiseki is like a ‘path’ or ‘trail’ that specifically “leads to a point.”

There’s a different meaning in both words.

Also Nayuta is a sanskrit word for ‘infinite’. It can also be translated from Japanese as an ‘uncountable number’. Though it, at the same time, can also be ’10 to the power of 6′.

          Oh, crazy languages.

          • Solomon_Kano

Huh. Interesting stuff. I think this is the most I’ve ever been interested in a game’s title lol.

    • OneOkami

I was a bit surprised when I read it was a PSP title instead of a Vita one.  Then once I thought about install base it made more sense…then I realized the state of the PSP market in the U.S. and remembered how backed up XSEED already is.

Just like you said, this is great for Japanese PSP (and/or Vita) owners, but it not being a Vita title does overseas markets no favors.Honestly, while I realize XSEED has a deal in place with Nihon Falcom (though I don’t remember all the details of it) and evidently in general a good working relationship with them, it’d be nice if another publisher would step in and localize some of their games in addition (even if they’re all PSN only, its better than nothing).  At this pace, we’d be lucky for XSEED to have brought over the rest of Trails in the Sky and Trails of Blue by the end of 2012 when Vita support will be full stream ahead.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I recall reading an interview on here with someone from Falcom and it sounds like they have a really good relationship with XSEED, but some more help certainly couldn’t hurt. It’d free XSEED up some and we’d have a higher chance of seeing the series finished.

    • sherimae1324

but oni-chan doesnt trails in the sky and trails of blue has been released in the west?

      • Solomon_Kano

Trails in the Sky has, we’re still waiting on SC.

  • Gatchaman1

Next Trails game is for PS3! With ground breaking graphics and refined gameplay! Coming to JPN/US/EU simultaneous release!

  • skymap

Thought it would be for another platform, but I’ll gladly buy this for my PSP. I just need to finish Zero and then Ao first.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

Hey, um, Falcom, this is great and all, but you have a lot of other IPs besides Ys and Legend of Heroes, ya know?  Maybe give them some attention too, eh?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

I agree and don’t agree. Trails is a very awesome game with epic moments that I always beg for another entry <3 but I can doubt of the quality if they realese a new game each year. They could make others games aside from Ys and Trails while working in them in those long projects to give us the real deal.

    • solbalmung

Well if the fans are asking for more why shouldn’t Falcom answer them? Its not because we, the west, have slim chances of seeing their TLOH franchise getting localized that they should drop it and focus on new IP.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

For variety’s sake, mostly.  The Kiseki games are extremely good, but I don’t think they need to be an annualized franchise.  What’s to stop them from going down the same route and eventual dip in quality that so many other annualized franchises do?  I’m not nearly as worried about Ys because 3 years between installments seems about right (And Celceta no Jukai is a remake, anyway), but I don’t like the idea this trend where it seems that the Kiseki games are all that they’re focusing on.

They’ve had great success in recent years updating their older franchises and bringing new ones into the mix, as well.  Xanadu Next is by no means ‘incredible’, but it’s a very creative and engaging take on the Diablo-style dungeon crawler genre that serves as a much needed modernization of a well-regarded, but dated series.  Brandish: Dark Revenant was an awesome and extremely playable update to one of their most daunting and user-unfriendly series, and set a good precedent for what a future game in the series could hold.  Who’s to say the couldn’t be done for something like, say, Popful Mail or Sorcerian?  Like Brandish and Xanadu, those are 2 IPs with a ton of great ideas that, with some fine tuning in the form of a remake or new installment, could be very playable and loved by their current audience as much as the big 2 series.  Or hell, why not try their hand at a new IP altogether.

It’s not like I’m trying to be down on Falcom, I’m really not.  In fact it’s quite the opposite; without a doubt, at the end of the day I would call Falcom my all-time favorite developer.  It’s just that it breaks my heart to see them go down this route, cashing in primarily on one now-annualized series and ignoring so many others, because it makes them hard to differentiate them from other developers who do the same that I’ve lost respect for.  I wish for their success more than you know, and I’m glad they’re finding the wider audience that they deserve, but now that more eyes are watching them, I’d love to see them branch out more again

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Well, you know how the deal is, gotta make money u know? eat and whatnot, this might help them get more ppl into falcom to do more stuff at the same time i imagine, they are still a small company, like gust, didnt you saw how they releasd all 3 atelier games on a row for ps3 without nothing else :P

  • Okuni-chan

(。Д。  ) Cannot learn Japanese fast enough.

  • Duc PC-QB

There’s noway this series will be localized completely.
Also all we have for Vita here is 2 upscale PSP version….

I have no idea why they did that

  • Quadsdat

This is curious. I wonder why PSP? And from the looks of it, might not even take place in the same setting as the previous Trails games.

Guess we have to wait for more news…

  • http://www.ukanime.com abigsmurf

Really bizarre they’re putting it on the PSP and not Vita. The PSP may have a big user base but how active will that user base be in 6 months time when this is released?

Also means they’ve zero chance of releasing it in the west.

    • http://www.facebook.com/juan.m.m.s.mdp Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Releasing it for the PSP allows both PSP and Vita users to get it from PSN whereas a Vita only release cuts out a segment. When you think about it is both a good business practice as well as somewhat thoughtful for those that are still hesitant about making the jump to the Vita~.

    • OverlordZetta

Probably still as huge as ever over there. I sincerely doubt the people that have them now won’t have them in sixth months – I can’t say, on the other hand, they’ll all have put out and upgraded to a Vita. The sheer volume of people with PSPs who actively use them just makes that unlikely.

Plus, you could just download it to the Vita, and unlike over in the West, Japan’s PSP PSN store is rich with stuff – all stuff that can be moved to the Vita when the time comes.

  • http://twitter.com/digtrioPortable Digtrio

Awesome news I guess. I doubt we’ll see a localisation of this game unless they ported it to Vita. I mean, sure, you can download them on PSN so I suppose that could happen but we’ll have to wait and see.

  • http://twitter.com/willofsilver Silver Lion

Wow that image is very beautiful, definitely making that as my desktop as soon as higher res is available

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

I wonder how that place is connected with the previous entries because for me at least, a place like that is very odd in Trails verse.

      Maybe Uroboros’ base is there.

      • http://twitter.com/willofsilver Silver Lion

This game sets in a different world than the Trials series so i doubt Ouroboros exists in this

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Really!? Oh I am not that excited anymore. But still Falcom is awesome making RPGs so I cannot deny the quality that the game may have.

  • solbalmung

I can’t bear this anymore, were not even sure of getting 2nd chapter Localized and Falcom is still making such awesome games  in their Legend Of Heroes franchise. QQ Xseed please please Q__________________Q

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Shocking to support PSP with PS Vita’s release. I guess I can only imagine an upport will be made a year after this comes out.

    • OverlordZetta

Nah, I don’t think it’s really that shocking. The PSP is probably the best selling/most widely loved handheld, like, ever over there. It’s the PS2 of handhelds. I suspect it’ll be supported for at least another year or so, if not longer.

      • sherimae1324

yeah! PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP   PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP PSP

        I LOVE MY PSP! tee-hee (^_^)

    • OneOkami

Its not that uncommon.  The PS2 continued to be supported WELL into the PS3′s time.  Yes the Vita was just released, but it doesn’t yet have the install base of its predecessor.

Also, you probably gotta figure NF made this decision not quite so much with the western market in mind. I’m not sure of all the details of the deal/relationship with XSEED, but they’re backed up as it is, and if they intend on localizing all the Trails of… games, this wouldn’t come for a long time.

It’d be nice if another publisher could/would step in to divide and conquer.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Maybe XSEED can be allowed to localize PSP games years from now exclusively release it on Vita as a PSN title… but with so many to localize before this game that would be near-impossible to pull off.

Times like this I wish I continued learning Japanese after taking the classes I know some of the language but not enough to enjoy a RPG.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I’m enthralled by the music and the concept art. Amazing!

  • MrRobbyM

Another Trails game and we don’t even have the second :/

  • OverlordZetta

I suspect the PSP will be getting great, final round games like this and some of the last few months’ announcements for the next few months to come – probably even longer. People stuck with the PS2 for at least a year – heck, wasn’t Persona 4 released into the lifecycle of the PS3? And people (myself included) probably STILL are using their PS2s over here. I bet it’ll be the same for PSPs over there, especially with the massive support of games and fans it’s had over the years.

Pity that it doesn’t have nearly the same love over here. I think, except for my old GBA, it’s probably easily the system I’ve used the most since I’ve got it – and that’s including the big consoles too.

Ah well. The game still looks good, but that’s par the course for these guys, so I’d expect nothing less.

    • kuro_chan666

I’d say PSP will be supported for at least a year more.
There are many announcements made for it, and there’s completely no need to switch to CrapVita completely, considering that it supports PSP.

      • OverlordZetta

Whoa, don’t be so hasty on calling Vita crap. It’s already got a fantastic library with many, many more great games to come – it’s a thousand times better than the 3DS was at this stage in its life, and arguably, even though it isn’t even RELEASED in the West yet, STILL has a better library.

        So yeah. Not crap!

Though I’d say the PSP isn’t either and all that, but I already did.

        • Hraesvelgr

I wouldn’t say that the Vita has a fantastic library or that it’s better than the 3DS, but, honestly, kuro’s comments are a bit on/off. Sometimes they’re fine, other times they’re a bit trolly/elitist.

  • SirRichard

When I saw the article title I assumed this was going to be published by Square Enix, given their trademark earlier this week.

That said, I need to get around to getting the first Trails, I finally have the money for it.

    • BK0000

There’s really no point in you getting the first Trails in the Sky game. XSEED has basically cancelled the second and third game. There’s no reason to play the first one when we’ll never get any closure to the story.

      • SirRichard

I could also get it anyway because it seems to be a decent JRPG? It’s disappointing that XSEED aren’t localizing the others, because then Ghostlight likely won’t try with them either, but that doesn’t mean the first game can’t stand on its own.

        • Raharu95

When was it statted that Second and Third are not going to be localized?

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Drake-Parker-Cronkin/1694277122 Drake Parker Cronkin

Uh? Xseed has NOT cancelled the rest of the games, they’re absolutely determined to release them no matter what!  What we’re waiting for is for Falcom to finish tweaking the jp version of SC, so that it can be put up on PSN along with FC & TC.  From there, it’ll be no problem for Xseed to bring over SC.

          • Raharu95

Great, all is not lost then :)

  • Hetare Kaiser

From 0 to 10^72 in only two games? Who wants to bet that the title after this one is called Mugen no Kiseki?

  • Crowlevel8

Huh its coming out for the vita too interesting. Can’t Wait
    ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

  • Wackoramaco87

This announcement makes me both happy and sad. It’s awesome to see yet another “Trails” title coming out, but we’re still on game 1 as far as the English versions go. Too bad the game didn’t do as well as  well as XSeed was probably hoping, but at least releases on psp can also be played on the Vita! Hopefully it’ll all work out and we can all enjoy the awesomeness that is this series! =D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Schwarz/100002325567790 Kevin Schwarz

XSEED so much work to pick up!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jan-Daryll-Palanca/100000250304791 Jan Daryll Palanca

THIS IS MADNESS!!! XSEED has yet to announce the release for the second chapter and i can’t even imagine the bulk they’ll have for the third chapter. god knows if they even have plans for releasing both zero and ao no kiseki and NOW we have this?!?!?!
(leaves house and applied to a japanese learning center lulz!)

  • Joanna

The concept art is drop dead gorgeous. But I’m going to keep my excitement in check as we probably won’t get this. Although why does the ending of the teaser trailer say PSP and Vita…..what’s that mean?! (no dear heart do not get excited!)

Also this is pure speculation on my part but them dropping the Legend of Heroes title could very well mean that Falcom is planning on making Trails it’s own franchise. And if that does turn out to be the case, it would not surprise me given the success of Trails in the Sky/Zero/Blue.
