Disgaea Team Creating New Dungeon RPG For 2012

By Spencer . December 27, 2011 . 10:09pm

Disgaea Team Creating New Dungeon RPG For 2012Nippon Ichi hinted at two future titles during the 2011 Akihabara winter festival. President Souhei Niikawa took the stage and said they’re working on a new adventure game slated for release in 2012. Nippon Ichi is also developing a new dungeon RPG with the Disgaea team.

This won’t be their first dungeon crawler, Z.H.P.: Unlosing Hero vs. Darkdeath Evilman released for the PSP last year was. Niikawa gave attendees a few clues about the game saying "seven angels," "high resolution characters," and "extensive customization" are keywords.

Niikawa also announced Cave Story for the Nintendo 3DS, which will probably be Cave Story 3D from NIS America and Nicalis.

Two checkmarks. Hopefully it utilizes a party based system instead of just one character. If so then it will be pretty phenomenal.  what if they go for full fledged 3D in high resolution. Epic.

Tenpei Sato please return. 4th/5th favorite video game composer.

It’s Disgaea Team, so I’m obviously excited.  I just hope they are planning to push something new as we already have a lot of Dungeon RPGs that have come out recently from NIS.

Ah well, can’t wait to hear some definitive stuff.

Unfortunately, I’m not enthusiastic about Nippon Ichi’s platformers. Prinny and Prinny 2′s terrible jumping mechanic still scars my mind. T_T

I really liked the jump mechanics, but that’s probably because i’m a masochist and i love hard games.

    • kupomogli

Prinny and Prinny 2 are the best games NIS has made.

I’m guessing you’re not a fan of the original Castlevania or any of the level based games aside from maybe Super Castlevania 4?  The reason I say this is because the prinny games have the exact same jumping mechanics.

When you jump forward, the location you’re going to land at is already predetermined from the location you jumped from.  Now on Prinny there are a few quirks to get around this.  The butt stomp for example, or double jump.  However, when doing the double jump, the location you take your second jump from is just like the first, as where you land is going to be predetermined.

This isn’t a terrible jumping mechanic.  It’s actually very enjoyable.  Takes much more skill.

Prinny and Prinny 2 are the best platformers I’ve played in a VERY long time.  If it wasn’t for Prinny, NIS would be one of my least favorite developers of all time.  Because of Prinny, I actually see them as great developers that spend too much time developing games in a genre that they suck at developing games for.

Huh? You mean you don’t like the Disgaea games???

        • kupomogli

          A winner is you.

          • Ravage27

But how can you hate on the best SRPG series ever :(
It is pretty much unbeatable in depth and content.

          • kupomogli

I don’t hate on the PSX or Super Famicom version of Tactics Ogre.  The PSP somewhat due to some flawed mechanics added into it, but it’s still a great game.

Prinny and Prinny 2′s jumping mechanism is related to the classic and retro-like Megaman games such as Megaman 1-6 (classic. Don’t know about 7 or 8 because never played those) and Megaman 9 and 10 (I said retro-like because it feels like classic MM but was made and released in later years). This isn’t an uncommon rule in platformers.

      • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

Actually Megaman has normal video game jump mechanics

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

…..Really? Oh. My bad then. I thought in those Megaman games you can’t turn while jumping, which you can’t do here unless you double jump. I still find this a classic rule on platformers.

          • HeatPhoenix

I don’t think so, Super Mario Bros. THE platformer had regular jumping mechanics and so did every single classic Mega Man game.

          • WilliamJasper

            That’s not what he’s saying.

          • HeatPhoenix

He mentioned a classic rule and no turning during the jump. Super Mario Bros. pretty much invented platforming and that didn’t have that. If that’s not what he meant, then I don’t know what else to get out of that.

          • GGear0323

Super Mario Bros. didn’t invent platforming, it was just successful to the point that many tried to emulate it afterwards. the thing is, SMB needed to give players control during a jump because a main aspect of the game was to defeat enemies by jumping on their head. ‘this’ type of game is what SMB created. since the games that came out earlier didn’t have this mechanic, they used a more static jumping system like in Prinny just without the double jump. Ghosts’n Goblins came out at around the same exact time as SMB and it is directly comparable to the jumping mechanics in the Prinny games.

      • Bruce

From what i played , I think it’s more related to the classic Castlevania games (1-3) .

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

          I see. My memories hazy then, but I could’ve sworn…..Oh well. :(

          • HeatPhoenix

            Castlevania however…

        • Ladius

If I remember correctly, the developers themselves mentioned Ghosts’n Gobilns as their main source of inspiration.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

THAT’S THE ONE! I forgot all about that game! That was what I was trying to remember. So it wasn’t Megaman. Yeah…..this.

man those are bad jumping mechanic, those are real jumping mechanics, who can still move like that in mid air? lol, but no, on a serious note, that’s how games were made traditionally and there’s also the fact prinney was meant to be a hard game, if that had made the jump hold are hands like what all the new games do, we can beat that game in a hour and wouldn’t even need 2 lives. games theses days are too easy and treat us like idiots most of the time with what some tutorials have to cover like press up to move CAUSE WE ARE SO STUPID WE DONT KNOW HOW TO MOVE. prinny was my diamond in the dust with how it treated us humanely

      • icecoffemix

Right. Because you can’t make hard platformer without gimping the jump mechanic.

  • Solomon_Kano

    YES!

Can’t get enough Dungeon Crawlers, one of my favorite genres

  • PoweredByHentai

Wait, what happened to “The Witch and the Hundred Soldiers”?

    • Ladius

Apparently it isn’t a dungeon crawler, more like a free roaming action-jrpg.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Is one of them a new Badman game? Like What Did I Do to Deserve This My Lord?, the sequel, and No Heroes Allowed? These utilizes dungeons and they have RPG elements if I’m not mistaken. I hope so because I love those games.

  • Ladius

If it’s a roguelike like ZHP, it’s day one material. That game was crystallized awesomeness.

Then again, I would day one any game from the Disgaea team, so…

NI is just throwing everything at us, aren’t they?
I never got to play ZHP, so I hope this is for the PS3 or something. I want to play one of their dungeon crawlers.

NIS, here`s my money! *hands over* I also know what game they`re talking about, but I won`t spoil it for you guys.

  • OverlordZetta

If either one is anything like ZHP and still portable, I’ll be all over that. My favorite game to this day.
