Imageepoch’s New Years Message: New JRPG Will Be Announced Soon

By Spencer . December 29, 2011 . 2:01am

Imageepochs New Years Message: New JRPG Will Be Announced SoonImageepoch, developer of Black Rock Shooter and 7th Dragon 2020, told Famitsu magazine they will announce new JRPG titles soon and to look for future news. The news comes from a list of publisher statements on what to expect in 2012.

This year, Imageepoch began self publishing PSP games starting with the permadeath dungeon crawler Tale of the Last Promise and later Black Rock Shooter. NIS America announced they will bring Black Rock Shooter overseas at a later date.

Sol Trigger and Another Princess may be two of Imageepoch’s future games. Siliconera found trademarks for both potential names filed in English and Japanese by the publisher.

They’d better actually try and make a good game this time, because just flaunting a great concept won’t help them anymore!

    • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

All of their games have been gooooug… gooor… gooouuaagh.

Okay, all of their games have been decent. They are getting better at it because Fate/EXTRA is interesting but underdeveloped or somesuch, BRS:The Game does have a degree of difficulty and it is pretty fun though repetitive. 7th Dragon 2020 is an Atlus RPG with other name and publisher so I’m not counting that.

      • cj_iwakura

Fate/Extra was my first Imageepoch trip, and I enjoyed it enough. They have fascinating ideas, and I like originality.

        • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

Pretty much why I like them, they try new things regardless if it works or not.

  • http://twitter.com/willofsilver Silver Lion

I always find it hard to support Imageepoch JRPG, they keep delivering promises but almost never keeps it and ends up very disappointing

    • Aoshi00

I hear you, Tale of the Last Promise just plain sucked (despite the art and trailers would lead one to believe otherwise), the premise was boring and ridiculous, the gameplay was boring.. sry I spent $80 on it.. so far I have no idea what their revolutionizing JRPG means.. and the word imageepoch just doesn’t evoke the image of quality.. I’m not interested in BRS, but it’s also generally rated very low as well, like the Last Promise.. not really looking forward to anything from them..

      • http://twitter.com/Shikuem Laura

I imported Tale of the Last Promise and it was very bad……..

        • Aoshi00

Unfortunately it was.. you just realize something’s wrong a couple of hours in, just boring, repetitive, uninspiring, the whole game takes place in the monotonous castle corridors, hardly any voices.. could hardly muster enough interest to continue *.*..  saving enough hostages to get good ending, seriously?  It’s probably more fun to play “The Last Guy”.. the battles are probably more fun in something like “Student of the Round” too even as a random generated dungeon RPG, at least that has epic music..

          • Gatchaman1

Hmm one could make the same arguments for Dark Spire, Etrian Odyssey, Wizardry and Strange Journey. And those all have weaker animation

          • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Maybe he wouldn’t like those too. But well, Dungeon Crawler are an aquired taste. Like Musou Games or Roguelikes. :)

          • Aoshi00

I never played those games except Wizardry, while I’m not a fan of dungeon crawler, I do like Wizardry on PSN or Students of the Round on the 360 despite their simple presentation. Even as a first person dungeon crawler, Last Promise was a horrible game thru and thru, nobody liked it (especially not if you spend $70-80 importing it, if one doesn’t spend a dime on it then maybe he could be more forgiving), check out reviews on Amazon Jpn.

IIRC, I remember I mentioned to you Sigma Harmonics was an absolute bad game and you didn’t believe me, and when you finally got it for $10, you didn’t think it was worth it either right? Anyway, Last Promise was bad, so no way I’m spending money on BRS (glad I didn’t get baited by huke’s artwork), which was not good either. More like JRPG revolution for mediocrity?

      • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

Eighty dollars? I’m sorry, but that’s way too much for a game unless it’s a limited edition. I would’ve been ticked off if I ever spent that much on a game……especially if it would’ve sucked. Unacceptable. Hopefully Imageepoch has something good up their sleeves.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah, unfortunatley I’ve made some bad decision of expensive blind pre-orders (sometimes I just go w/ my gut and hope a game would be good).. The trailers were pretty deceiving.. Last Promise tops that chart along w/ the likes of Sigma Harmonics..

I try to get the best bargain when getting US games, but when importing Jpn games, it’s a bit of a gamble unless you wait for reviews and make a more informed decision.. I got the AmiAmi ver w/ the bookstore card (another bait lol), otherwise it would’ve cost a little less ~$70.. thank god I knew better and didn’t get BRS, otherwise would be majorly pissed..

        • cj_iwakura

Was worth it for Catherine’s import.

        • Thomas Maloney

When is the last time you checked the prices of Japanese games?

I mean, Sekaiju no Meikyuu III (Etrian Odyssey III) was over $60, and that’s just a DS game XD

        • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

$80 because the yen is strong right now. if the game has a good quality and a fair amount of replayability, the cash you spend on it will be worth it when you consider the satisfaction that you’ll get from playing it. Of course, this only applies to games that you know you will enjoy.

      • Luna Kazemaru

BRS was alright I wouldn’t call it the best thing ever but it was ok for the most part the system was abit weird.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Im surprised it was bad, trailers and developer comments made it seem like the revitalization of the JRPG.

        • RupanIII

Yea, that campaign they had really embracing the term ‘JRPG’ got me pretty excited, but from what I’ve heard they’ve failed to live up to it :

          • malek86

As a general rule, I’m wary of any developers that tries to hype up its stuff. So that was not too surprising to me.

      • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

Oh hey I almost missed this. BRS was not bad, it was just Imageepoch being Imageepoch. It’s a fun On-rails-shooter-with-an-RPG-interface. Not worth the importation, though I’ll give you that.

      • frantisek

well, as much as saigo tale of the last promise final promise story completely sucked i think they have made better games, even if none of them can be considered great in my opinion

  • http://twitter.com/SilverCitizen Silver Citizen

I sure hope NISA actually gives us one of these new Imageepoch games.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I’m looking forward to see what they have announced soon.

  • http://steamcommunity.com/id/innocent_sin Gyro Zeppeli

Great, now we just need Compile Heart and Idea Factory to make some more games next year and the trinity of kusoges will be complete.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

      They don’t make kusoges.

    • cj_iwakura

Compile Heart’s an Idea Hacktory subsidiary.

  • AzureNova

While I’m not complaining about a new game being made, I still would like 7th Dragon 2020 to get localized first please. =^_^=

    • cj_iwakura

I’d rather have the first one.

      • http://www.cubiz.co.cc/ Chris Thomas

        Or both. They look… interesting.

        • Luna Kazemaru

7th Dragon was pretty good IMO hope they do bring it over.

  • Gatchaman1

Ah they should bring over Tales of the Last Promise too I wanna know the story despite people saying it sucked. I liked the artwork and enemy animations.

Also I hope its a PS3 RPG with real size characters

    • frantisek

you didn’t lose anything with saigo, it wasn’t really worthy of being localized to begin with

  • OverlordZetta

All they need to do is announce Luminous Arc 4 and I’ll be happy.

    • http://www.cubiz.co.cc/ Chris Thomas

Wait what about LA3? Did I miss that one?

      • cj_iwakura

Yep. Never localized, never gonna be.

      • OverlordZetta

Sadly, yes. Been out for a few years to boot, and it was probably the best one by miles.

Chances of us seeing it though? Slim to none.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

More localization news! (especially 7th dragon 2020 and the upcoming F/E CCC)

  • godmars

So who betting on either a PSP/PSV or 3DS title?

If its PS3/360 then I think I’m going to be worried.

  • Darkrise

I really do want to support Imageepoch but The last Promise and BRS were really disappointing… With the exception of Fate/Extra of course. Hopefully that ‘huge’ Type-moon game they mentioned a while back would be great and whatever they’re releasing at this point. They have to realize that they’re not keeping their ‘promise’ for innovative jrpg’s.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

I think its Fate/Extra unless I missed something?
I think the type moon project is F/E CCC ryte?

    • frantisek

agreed, saigo no yakusoku no monogatari was an example of bad game design

and i think they should realize that before promoting innovation they should be able to create quality games that are actually enjoyable…

fate extra is probably the imageep game i like most, but even then i mostly enjoyed the story while hating the battle system and dungeon design

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

The problem is that they try to hard to innovate.
I would be glad if more classical JRPG like in the SNES time would pop up, they are so rare today that you could call a secret of mana or terranigma clone innovative…

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Titles? Hopefully one is for the next gen handhelds, though I bet PSP titles will be there.

  • Blick Winkel

I really enjoyed “Saigo no Yakusoku no Monogatari”. Pity, no english, but still ok. I think, for me it’s “psp game of the year”.

  • skymap

Saigo no Yakusoku no Monogatari was a pretty expensive for almost no content.

  • Blick Winkel

Yes’ it is, and untill today. But still… its’a good game with epic soundtrack, like in old times.

  • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

I don’t know about their other games but I liked Fate/Extra and looking foward to BRS The Game.

  • kuro_chan666

I loved almost every game Imageepoch made, so I’m happy they’re making more.
Saigo no Yakusoku no Monogatari was great, and this year, it’s one of the top games, standing on top-1 for me, though sharing that title with Senritsu no Stratus.

  • frantisek

not too fond of this developer… fate extra was nice, as black rock shooter, but arc rise fantasia was decent at best and saigo no yakusoku no monogatari was the worst dungeon crawler i played in a long time, i don’t know who thought that battle system could be any good

i think they try too hard to find new gameplay styles when they are mostly unable to use them well… luminous arc was more traditional, and while it was a really bland strategy game at least it was enjoyable for what it was

  • PrinceHeir

hopefully it will be an improvement compared to their recent releases :P
