Japanese Mega Retailer Tsutayas Best Selling Game Is…

Tsutaya is one of Japan’s major media retailers with walls of CDs, DVDs, and video games to buy. Their stores are also a place to trade in and pick up used games for a discount. Think of them like a Sam Goody and a place to kill time while you’re waiting for the 5AM train if you’re in Shibuya.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is Tsutaya’s best selling game of 2011 beating out multi-million seller Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Final Fantasy XIII-2 which came out just a few weeks ago is number three and Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional, the only DS game in the top 20, is number four. Well everybody knew Type-0 would be a great game and sell extremely well.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Sam Goody is still around, I thought theyve been gone since many years ago, probably should update that to say an FYE…

Seems like a Sony dominated chart. Wonder how next year shall be.

Sounds like my kind of store.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I didn’t expecting PSP 2 Infinity to on the PSP list. I’m glad Kirby Mass Attack is on the DS list. I have to say that game does have alot of charm.

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Mmm, lots of RPGS… This is my kind of list!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

So Final Fantasy Type-0 is his best selling game this year, huh?

(-_-) Great. Just great……..This is fantastic, but thanks to this little piece of news I’ll be all fidgety every night wanting to play this game even more. Back then didn’t want it, then I wanted it, and now I absolutely desire it. I really cannot wait for me to get my hands on this gem.

BTW, I’m so happy that Pokemon Black AND White are still going strong.

    • ishashobar

Don’t worry. I’ll make sure to play extra time on my copy of Type-0, just for you.

  • riceisnice

Even if it’s in 15th place, I like how a weird game like Rhythm Heaven is doing so well.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Haven’t seen a Sam Goody in years.

  • raymk

How is FFXIII-2 in 3rd place when that game is still selling bad over in japan?  It doesn’t make sense.

    • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

My guess is that it only sold bad at first, then it sold well later on.

      • entrydenied

FFs and most games in Japan (baring franchaises like NIntendo’s and MH) always sell the most during week 1. So it’s still not selling as well as an FF game should be but the drop in percentage between wk 1 and wk 2 is less drastic than FFXIII’s. In the end Type-0 might end up selling more in terms of lifetime sales.

    • chicken_and_rofls

Maybe because it’s NOT selling badly in Japan?  That was just a spin people were putting on the story for some nonsensical reason.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

Is sold badly compared to other FF games. It had good sales, but only 1/3 the sales any other FF game got. XIII sold three times more that XIII-2.

    • entrydenied

As far as average games sales in Japan is concerned, FFXIII-2 is selling very well. But compared to previous FFs, it is selling very badly because there hasn’t been a mainline FF that has sold below 1 mil copies during the first week since FFIV if I’m not mistaken.

What Dylan said, but also I feel people need to keep in mind this is just one chain of stores. Drawing conclusions from it isn’t a safe bet since certain store draw in certain kinds of people. The way Spencer describes this one, it seems an ideal store for otaku, so seeing FFXIII-2 up there and all these RPGs does not surprise me.

    SMT DS2 is too low…
    But doesn’t matter…Still wait the Na/Eu…

    And Type-0…
    SE…Please…
Don’t take the same route as Capcom…
I still have hope and some money for you dammit!!!!

    • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

The same route as Capcom? What does that mean?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Arnaud-Phantomhive/1816181579 Arnaud Phantomhive

        Well…

        Mhp3rd?Where is the Na/Eu?

        • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

          Oh I see.

    • godmars

I think they’ll make an exception for an RPG where they didn’t for a pseudo MMO.

  • ddh819

Is MHP3d being localized for the US? I’m assuming FF Type 0 is.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

Nope Sony is not allowing it. It doesn’t meet some kind of rules they have.

  • Hinataharem

That whole thing would have been my christmas list if I had money.

  • http://twitter.com/BurnMyApathy BurnMyApathy

Wow, I’m glad Devil Survivor 2 made it on at least one list! And whoa, Catherine beat out some FPSs AND Skyrim? That’s how you can tell this list isn’t from the U.S. >w>

    Jk, I love you America.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

Of course, busty blonds are serious business in America.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-Marquis-Starkey/100000190635952 Alexander Marquis Starkey

      Um this is for Japan…

  • Michael Vincent

I still wish for Ace Attorney Investigations 2 to be in the U.S though.

    >.<

  • http://twitter.com/sakurairomemori Alphabet Soup

Pretty impressive list.  I was a little surprised by Type-0 since it came out so late in the year.

  • poisui

    I can’t wait for Type-0 to be localized. :)

  • sherimae1324

so no 360 game at top best sellers? xbox games are hard to sell here in japan… ^_^

  • Joanna

I’m honestly not surprised by this list. It’s the top sales for one chain of stores, and one that sounds like it caters to a certain demographic (male, ages 16-25, probably a good amount of gaming otakus too). I wouldn’t be getting too excited or depressed. Munter Hunter 3rd had 5 times the sales of Type-0, but it’s only second place here. Likewise, Pokemon sold even more than MonHun3rd, yet it’s not even on the top 20 overall. So I wouldn’t be drawing any conclusions from this list. It’s definitely interesting to see what this demographic is buying though.

FF type 0 is piss hard and psp 1000 can’t play co-op great good but flawed to the bone
