Was The Last Story Developer Working On A Third Person Shooter?

By Spencer . January 2, 2012 . 1:28pm

Was The Last Story Developer Working On A Third Person Shooter? Artoon, the studio that developed The Last Story and Blue Dragon, may have been working a third person shooter. A digital artist’s CV reveals an unannounced TPS was in development between December 2006 and February 2008. The game was ultimately canceled.

Before working at Artoon, Tatsumi was a digital artist at Square Enix where he created character art for Egg Monster Hero 4 and worked on a canceled action game between November 2004 and May 2005.

He’s now working on an unannounced adventure game, which Marvelous AQL might release in the future. This project started as an Artoon title in April 2009. Development temporarily stopped so Artoon could complete Club Penguin Game Day. After AQ Interactive merged all of their studios into one entity, the project resumed in June 2010 and the unannounced adventure game is still in development at Marvelous AQL.

For a second there I thought Mistwalker was interested in making shooters.

    Don’t scare me like that.

Actually, I’d be very interested to see their take on shooters. I don’t mind T/FPS games, but I do mind generic ones that don’t seem to add anything new to the genre. A graphic update and a new nuclear disaster doesn’t mean anything to me.

But I was always curious to see what the result of a JRPG’d shooter would be like.

I don’t mind shooters in general (though I am sort of burnt out on them this generation), but Mistwalker isn’t the developer I’d like to see going that route.

They’ve got Sakaguchi and Uematsu. To do anything other than RPGs just seems wrong. :P

        • JustThisOne

Well of course! :P I don’t think I’d want them to go down that route seriously either. I just wonder what they’d come up with, that’s all. Resonance of Fate and Valkyria Chronicles are the closest I’ve seen to a JRPGized Shooter, and they aren’t shooters at all.

It probably wouldn’t sell, but it’d go for an interesting experience.

Apart from shonen anime games, racers, and traditional turn based rpgs, third person shooters are a favorite genre of mine. Wish this would have came to light, we could use more.

    Where is Mistwalker nowadays anyway?

    • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

I haven’t heard anything since The Last Story released, so hopefully hard at work on their next game and receiving the funding they deserve.

It’s always worrying when you don’t hear from a developer about new projects, but then I remember that TLS only came out in early 2011. Maybe they’ll announce something new this year.

Always looking forward to Mistwalker’s next game.. I do like Artoon as well..  sad there’s no Blue Dragon 2, or Cry On for that matter :(…

I don’t mind 3rd person shooter either if it has an interesting setting, as I’m not good at FPS at all..

        • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

Ugh, Cry On. Don’t remind me! The concept art looked really nice and I liked the idea of an emotional game that would make players cry.

          The only tears shed were upon hearing of its cancellation. ;__;

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, Sakaguchi/Uematsu/Fujisaka/former Cavia, would’ve been a great game, and sad it got canned..  I still can’t believe we didn’t get Blue Dragon 2 though, dang those anime and DS spinoffs..

          • Pesmerga00

Man, I was really looking forward to this back then as well. We know the
Gooch can tug at your heart strings. So a game dedicated to this would
have been great. The Cavia mind-screw would have been interesting as
            well.

I can’t help but feel a little worried about the future of Mistwalker.
While I have loved most of their games, it didn’t seem that many
            performed to expectations.

Fingers crossed for continued games from them. And of course Success. :)

          • Aoshi00

I think the Gooch’s games truly have heart, wept like a baby at Lost Odyssey disc 1 :), Nier was touching as well, incidentally both had novellas in the game (I think it’s a great way to tell the story).. ASH and Last Story had nice story and chars too.. I’m a little worried too, their new IPs never got sales they deserved (I guess it’s hard since JRPG is not that big anymore and even harder for new IPs), it really is too bad Blue Dragon 2 never came to fruition.. I hope the Gooch would continue making great games, always love playing his RPGs :)

though the good thing that Monolith Soft next game is on Wii U and will be hearing some good things from them this year :)

      can’t wait for it :P

  • Solomon_Kano

    I really wonder what that would’ve been…

Ah well. I wonder what that other studio behind The Last Story is cooking up next? I’d like to see what platform Mistwalker develops on next since, at this point, it seems like they’ll make a game for anyone but Sony lol. I was thinking Wii U would be the natural progression, but then I remembered that they started on 360 and moved to DS. So anything’s possible.

If they DO move onto Wii U though, that could be incredible. I mean, Monolith is already working on a Wii U game, so having both of them… man. Xenoblade and The Last Story are the only Wii games I’ve ever wanted enough to consider buying the system so, if they both do something on Wii U, I’ll not need any further convincing to buy one. I’m already mostly convinced, but that’d have me on-board that much sooner.

But they will never get release in the US (for Wii U)

      • Solomon_Kano

        lol

    artoon … or mistwalker … I confuse

    • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

Mistwalker doesn’t actually code the games they just make the concept, story etc and another developer do the programming side, in this case Artoon.

Whatever it is if Marvelous is publishing it I have to keep an eye for it.
