Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2′s Attack Of The Big Dipper

By Spencer . January 9, 2012 . 3:32pm

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 has two mysteries, there’s a website that can predict death and mysterious invaders known as the Septentriones. One invader shows up each day and if you want to survive you have to defeat it. The outer space invaders also have another subtle connection. If you didn’t notice Alioth, Dubhe, Merak, and Phecda are named after stars, specifically the stars that make up part of the Big Dipper…

Atlus has Devil Survivor 2 slated for release on February 28.

February’s shaping up to be a good month for RPGs on the 3DS with SMT:DS2 and Tales of the Abyss. Not so good for my wallet though. =/

    • Brandonmkii

DS2 isn’t a 3DS game, but I guess you COULD play it on the 3DS if you wanted to…

      • James Beatty

Well, a big “plus” for the 3DS is the massive DS library and she can play the game on the 3DS. It’s not a 3DS exclusive game, but it can be played on a 3DS, which is what she said.

Dubhe is easy, being the first one.
Merak is kinda difficult but not so much once you know how he attacks.
    Phecda will make you rage.
    Alioth is sorta kinda difficult.
And that last Septentrion? You are going to love it. Really.

  • Yesshua

This trailer shows one thing that the original Devil Survivor lacked.  It looks like there are honest to god cutscenes in this game.  They’ll probably be very short and very minimalist (it is SMT after all) but I feel like Devil Survivor suffered terribly because there was nothing to signify major plot events.  Not even special still art pictures like Phoenix Wright will use.  Just… more text boxes.

So this is good!  We don’t know yet if this sequel will maintain all the strengths of the original (excellent non-linear storytelling, well balanced combat challenges, a new spin on Strategy that’s both unique and true to it’s SMT heritage) but we do know at least that one of the weaknesses has been rectified.  Hooray!

    • Moriken

The story feels much more linear though…almost all of the optional events in this game are mainly used to build up the affection levels with the other characters, unlike the first one when they pretty much decided which routes you could get in the end. So there’s the storyline and then there’s the character-events, plus a handful of other events, but those are quite few.

  • poisui

This is not good. I need to cut down on my videogame backlog before these games pour in.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Wait, what happened to the voice acting?! :( Guess I will hope for Overclocked of this one, though I guess by the time that comes out, I will finally be able to finish the game, really one of the hardest handheld games Ive ever played, I cant beat the first boss of sorts after having the game since day one :(

Hopefully this one has Very Easy mode? I love these types of stories in games though, really immersive.

    • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

I doubt there’s gonna be a Overclocked edition but I could be wrong who knows.

There’s also no Easy mode, but its slightly easier except for boss battle, they are what you may or may not call unfair.

BTW, which boss? Wendigo or Beldr?

      • Moriken

The boss at the port was so obscenely hard when you get in unbeknowing what kind of fight will await you…(in DS2)

        • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

And even knowing how the fight will go, it¡s still unfair because you can’t kill it without it going on his 3 phases. I could have killed him in the 1st one but nooo, frigging scripted events

“Atlus has Devil Survivor 2 slated for release on February 28.”

February haunts me again with not just this release, but tons of other releases (must I remind you the PSVita again?).

Well at least I found out my wallet’s last birthday. :L

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Well theres no other DS game releasing then, so no competition. Hopefully they price the game reasonably.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Yes. You’re correct about that. I hope so as well.

      • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

It’s regular price of 30$, given they have to profit I don’t think they will lower the price just because nobody cares about the DS anymore (given there’ a lot of DS games in stores the game isn’t alone).  It’ll go up in price not down, especially a late gen title for a company known for low printing.

the vita….  its not doing so great in japan but I still hope we get it state side but anyway I kinda want to see a Persona game on the 3DS

      • Shadow_Raskolnik

We’re getting the PSVita stateside, there’s no doubt about that. Now whether or not it does well in the US market is another question.

      • Moriken

The Vita needs some RPGs out to start doing well, at least if we look at the obscene RPG-library of the PSP!
Or at least, it needs more games out anyway…

    • Opn

      February either is the month of JRPGS (tales of abyss and persona and ff -13-2) or the month where fans of video games cry over their empty wallets…..;_;

  • AoiKaze

Watching the past couple of trailers Atlus USA released bumped SMT: DS Overclocked to the top of my “must finish” list! Interesting though that this is just for the original DS rather than the 3DS…makes me wonder if there will be another “Overclocked” version for the Devil Survivor 2 on the 3DS. Hm…

    • darkfox1

      Same thing I was thinking.

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

The chances of an Overclocked version of this game will most likely depend on the sales of this version. If the sales are good then there could be a chance we might see an Overclocked 2 in the future, but if sales are bad (such as if everyone decides to wait for a version that may or may not be released) then chances for seeing an Overclock 2 will be pretty low.

Personally I think that Atlus will probably hold out on releasing a DSO2 and will instead release Devil Survivor 3 for the 3DS, but that’s just a guess on my part.

      • mirumu

I think Atlus are a lot more market savvy than that. They’ll certainly know some of us will wait for a 3DS version, but they’ll also be aware others will buy both versions if they release the DS version first.

I never saw directly comparable sales numbers between the original DS Devil Survivor and it’s Overclocked 3DS release, but the numbers that are available appear to put both in the same ballpark. The DS version no doubt sold a bit more, but since then the 3DS market has grown and the market for those willing to buy DS games has shrunk. Today I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see 3DS version sales edge ahead.

My expectation is that Atlus allowed for all of this by factoring in a 3DS port of Devil Survivor 2 from the start allowing them to spread the development costs over both versions effectively making both cheaper. As long as both versions can be sold profitably then it makes sense to maximise profits by releasing into both DS and 3DS markets. Of course releasing a 3DS Overclocked version now would cannibalise sales of the DS version so I wouldn’t expect it to be confirmed until sometime well after February 28th.

  • pockystix

    I. . . I like the part where it looked like the 2 girls were about to kiss. o 3o

  • Opn

so would i need to have played the first one to play the sequel or is it like the main persona games where you dont need any knowledge of the past game(s) to play this?

    • MidnightRain

Don’t worry, you don’t need any knowledge of the first game. :D

      • Opn

        *does gendo pose* excellent

    • CrazyKnives

I was curious about that myself, but it looked so different from the first I didnt think they tied together. I’ve already played part one but still…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

I really liked the first, but I might wait for an Overclocked version of this.

  • Herok

not waiting for an overclocked version, i dont need voice acting to enjoy a great game. (plus by april it wont ever be found for $30 again)

  • AzureNova

I WILL be getting DS2 for the DS, but please ATLUS let us know if there is going to be an Overclocked version as well. Thank You =^_^=

  • Okuni-chan

    I know what I’m doing Feb. 28th!

  • http://twitter.com/Fillytase Stephanie Michelle

Anyone know if you need to have played the first to follow this one?  I want to know if I should get it for the DS, but I haven’t gotten around to playing the first one yet.

    • Moriken

No, you don’t! It’s a completely stand-alone title, only the game system is the same, with minor tweaks. (and tbh, I preferred the story of the first one more, it was more…mysterious-type suspense, this one has more of an urgent in-your-face kind of suspense)

  • PrinceHeir

    cannot wait for this :D

currently playing Digital Devil Saga(amazing game btw)

but i’ll probably get the overclocked version to be honest :P

    • Moriken

But overclocked is the first DS? oô

  • antperze17

OMG!! i loved the 1st game sooooooo much!!!!!!!! i really CANNOT! wait 4 this game already got it pre-ordered (srry 4 the fan boy rant lmao!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Now its SMT+ Neon Genesis Evangelion w/out the angst…

DEAL! On a side note: Is there a social link system? I think i heard it somewhere be4…

  • ryne11

One step closer to a megaten game set in America with nothing but alien mythology.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Most likely the overclocked version will be like 1-2 years later.  I rather double dip than to wait for something that has a chance of not happening and let this version go rare and I have NO version to enjoy.

  • Joanna

You guys have no idea how excited I am for this game~ Atlus I love you~
