Surprise #2: Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition Is A Tactical RPG

By Spencer . January 13, 2012 . 2:34am

Surprise #2: Pokemon + Nobunagas Ambition Is A Tactical RPGTecmo Koei transformed Pokémon into Pokémon Tactics with Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition. Like other strategy games, you have to move before you can attack. The distance you can move depends on what Pokémon you’re using. Flying Pokémon, for example, can soar over obstacles.

Once you get in range, you can select attacks or if your Pokémon are in trouble, trainers (warlords in this game) can use items to heal them. Defeated Pokémon drop treasure chests with gold and items for players to pick up.

Warlords also have command abilities they can use to turn the tide of battle in Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition. The hero character (either a male or female trainer) can scout for new Pokémon to partner with by searching fields and caves from different countries and target other castles to conquer. Players can pick a castle to storm once a month in game time, of course. While you’re moving your units, enemies can try to takeover your castles too.

Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition comes out for Nintendo DS on March 17 in Japan.

You can partner with other pokemon?! Awesome. I’m going to have a hard time choosing between my favorites.

And I’d also like to note that this game gives me another reason to love flying types.

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

Just be careful of Stealth Rock. >_<

  • brian yep

I thought we already knew it was an SRPG based on videos of it.

  • Xerain

Well I’ll at least give Nintendo credit for not turning a classic Tactical game into an FPS.

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

      Lol @ XCOM jab

On a sidenote, I can’t help but notice the Sengoku Era of Japanese History seems to be a popular/ubiquitous source of material for many Japanese video games like Onimusha, Sengoku Basara, and even Nobunaga’s Ambition, to name a few.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

So I’m guessing that using different Pokemon means different strategy options. They seem to go through with this one really well.

  • http://twitter.com/KIRBYSIM Sim Cheng Kai

Another reason I’m regretting not grabbing a Japanese 3DS for 13,500 yen while I was in Tokyo. ~_~

    • darkbartz

Well, this one is for the DS and that’s not regional-locked right?

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Be careful. Pokemon Black and White are both region locked and they are for the DS, so we can’t be certain that this won’t be region-locked.

        • http://twitter.com/KIRBYSIM Sim Cheng Kai

          Why, Nintendo, why???

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

            Thank you. I never knew.

        • Suicunesol

They’re region-locked for DSi. Not Regular DS or DSLite.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Oh. I only tried it on the DSi, so I never knew. Thanks.

Looks like I just have to show you proper respect now, because of what I witnessed.

  • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

Not to put this down or anything, but this isn’t a crossover with Fire Emblem because?

I mean, it would have made slightly more sense.

I’m still looking forward to it though.
EDIT: Even though I’m going to fail epically at it.

EDIT 2: And are my eyes deceiving me or are the Pokemon sprites 3D? 0.0

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

I kept thinking that it’s like a Fire Emblem crossover, too. Just in a medieval Japan setting instead of a medieval European-style land.

    • http://twitter.com/Fillytase Stephanie Michelle

God, a Fire Emblem/Pokemon crossover would be orgasmic.

  • http://twitter.com/digtrioPortable Digtrio

Pretty sure this game is going to be fantastic. Currently playing some Jeanne d’Arc at the moment (which is also pretty damn fantastic) so I’m in a bit of a strategy RPG mood and Pokemon is always good fun. Bring it on I say!

Hoping that outside of battle they have a bit of the strategy elements that makes games like Nobunaga’s Ambition what it is (even if they are a bit basic). Would certainly love to set fire to Jigglypuff’s fields or attempt an assassination of Articuno’s lieutenant. :P

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

The male main character look like a weirdo with the thing he wearing on his head…

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

I was already sold on this, but now… NOW!! Ah, I’m so excited! If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good strategy RPG, and combining it with one of my favorite things (Pokemon) only sweetens this delicious deal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fitzpatrick-Phillips/1786364591 Fitzpatrick Phillips

Aww yeeeah!! Look at Motochika! Badass as usual!
Although I’m pretty sure everyone knew it would be an SRPG.

  • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

Please, please, please, please… PLEASE bring it over to the US! I love a good story, and this one looks interesting, and I really like tactical RPGs nows (thanks to the Disgaea series) and this is most welcome to my collection!

I’ll import this game if I have to if there’s no US release!

Nintendo… I know you want my money and you can have it if you bring the game over here!

    • Gatchaman1

Koei didnt bring over their NDS tactical strategy Phoenix Wright style Samurai Warriors game so U doubt it here

      • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

It’s Pokemon and Nintendo calls the shots now…

  • Pichi

Tactical RPG is a perfect match for Pokemon. Nintendo or Koei really needs to bring this over, as its looking to be a very meaty spin-off with a unique spin to add.

  • James Beatty

    Didn’t we already know this?

  • ArcadiaSymphonia

I reall want this game badly

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

NO SH#$ WE ALREADY KNEW THAT

  • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

This looks awesome. I really hope it gets localized.

    • Gatchaman1

      doubt it

      • Michael Vincent

        But it’s Pokemon.

        • http://twitter.com/sheleigha Shel

Pokemon Typing on DS never got released. It wouldn’t have worked either, since it was to teach Japanese kids to type in english.

          • Michael Vincent

yes. But there is a big reason that’s why it was never released.  I don’t think we can compare that game with this one.

        • Gatchaman1

          But it’s Nobunaga

          • Michael Vincent

            still it’s Pokemon. lol. ^^

          • Gatchaman1

            And yet…unfortunately…it’s Nobunaga

      • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

As do I, but it would still be nice.

  • Michael Vincent

Goodness. I really really want this game right now. I hope Nintendo will announce this overseas, be it Europe, Australia or North America. Anywhere as long as it’s in English. We’ll just import. All hail to the region-free! xD

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I524CTBYVX2V574EVWRHO2L3AI Seizui

If only the warlords fought too. That would be amazing. I’d buy the game in a second just to see the warlords fight the opposition’s most powerful pokemon.

Imagine it, Nobunaga taking down the charizards as he steps into the battlefield.

  • SirRichard

Can partner with any Pokémon, eh?

Army of Charmanders, here I come!

  • AzureNova

I think we knew this already, but the game still looks fun lol.

  • http://twitter.com/Fillytase Stephanie Michelle

I will be seriously pissed if this isn’t localized. :l I know the DS is region free, but I don’t know a lick of Japanese.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

      lol XD same

  • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

    Gimme.

Seriously, I love grid-based SRPGs. There’s a reason why I embrace NIS games with all my heart, and try Fire Emblem despite it’s death to everything motto.

  • TheMysticalNinja

I thought the trailer made it clear it was going to be a tactical RPG. Regardless it sounds like it’s going to be fun but also decpetively hard. And I do think it will come to the west just due to it being part of the Pokemon brand.

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

    1. Who’s that char that has an Eevee?

    2. Now, according to the previous article of 6 vs 6, please don’t tell me that’s the head count limit.

    3. I hope that it doesn’t have permadeath.

    4. Please don’t tell me boss chars are guaranteed to have Ubers. >_>

    • Exkaiser

The girl with the eevee is the female protagonist. Likewise, the guy is the male one.

It’s a Pokemon game. It’s not going to have permadeath. Even the Pokemon roguelikes didn’t have permadeath.

Of course they’re going to have ubers, but uber status means nothing outside of a competitive setting and even less in a spin-off game where the balance of stats will be different than the main games.

      • pockystix

I wonder if someone will Nuzlocke this lol

    • http://twitter.com/Zephyrsword Jessica

I guess you’ve only played Fire Emblem? There are plenty of SRPGs that don’t use permadeath.

  • http://twitter.com/Zephyrsword Jessica

I’m so excited for this game! It’s just like Bleach: 3rd Phantom and the Battle Moon Wars doujin game; I grew up playing the Shining Force games and to know theres a Pokemon TRPG coming out just like it gets me all tingly with excitement.

I know it’s supposed to be a crossover game; and I don’t recognise the other characters since I’ve never played Nobunaga’s Ambition; but I know I will love this anyway.

  • takopako

i think i may actually like it…lol. though i am confused as to whether or not this game will have picks from gen 1-5 or all of the pokemon…i hope its all of them… also it is unclear if pokemon even evolve in this game.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

It is a Pokemon game but, I have a feeling it won’t be localized. I mean it probably will but since Japan has this idea that America doesn’t like anything Japanese looking or from history anymore I got a feeling it might not get localized.

That said I really wish Japan looked at the sales for Shogun 2.

  • Kris

All of a sudden, my interest is piqued. While I worry for the game’s localization chances, if the game were released in English it would be the first Pokémon game I’ve purchased since Silver.

  • http://twitter.com/ZnTxn Mike

I’m worried about fighting an army of Wailords

    *Hides alonside skitty*

  • Bio_liquid

SHUT UP! And take my rupees!

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Pretty sure this will come out.  Pokemon sells extremely well and Nintendo took a chance on Samurai Warriors 3 with a crossover of a Japan only Nintendo game.  If they don’t bring this over I think it is because it is a very late DS game not because it is a Japanese looking game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1769064526 Vivian Mai

So like. I’m in love with this game already…

  • Monkey_T

I have no doubt this game will come over to America.

    And when it does.
    My body will be ready.

  • Testsubject909

A surprise? It felt clear to me in the first trailer they showed…

    • Judo

Exactly. We knew it was an SRPG from the trailer.

  • ShadowWolf

i can’t help but think this would also make a cool anime/manga

imagine it………whole armies of pokemon take the field in large scale, glorious combat alongside a bunch of generic soldier each commanding at least 1.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Naito-Midna/100000029806268 Naito Midna

Unify the nation with a Pokemon army? My body is ready.

Despise what my friends say about this game, it looks pretty good. GTFO with them, they don’t know about Nobunaga. I also hope it give us a good challenge.
