New Trailer For Infinite Souls, Takehito Harada’s Next PS3 RPG

By Spencer . January 26, 2012 . 3:21am

Idea Factory hired Disgaea series artist Takehito Harada to create a brand new game, Infinite Souls. ChouChou (the pink-haired lass) is the lead character in this game and her dream is to rule the world. She’s joined by Altis (girl with a halo) who looks innocent, but is really a devil who got kicked out of Hell and Lute (blue-haired boy with goggles) who takes care of their airship.

While the trailer doesn’t have gameplay footage, Infinite Souls isn’t a strategy RPG. The game uses a turn based battle system with up to 16 characters and swap them mid-battle to make a group of four active fighters.

Overwhelming Game Infinite Souls comes out on March 22.

    that was um… interesting

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

The trailer was awful, the music too. Not sure if want…

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I agree, the character model…whatever looks damn awful.

      • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

the character model are glorious! And Daniel Morandi should instantely lose the rights to his avatar.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Really? Really? looks pretty damn bad to me.

          • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

But it’s like Disgaea in 3D. Not that I wouldn’t prefer it in 2D or anything. Just saying that I don’t get the Negativism.

At least people who have a Laharl Avatar shouldn’t think that the character design is flawed.

          • http://www.hamstapowah.com/ Zaron

I don’t think the issue is the design so much as the modelling.  I love Harada, and the drawn characters look great, but the cheaply rendered chibi everything in the game itself looks pretty terrible to me, especially next to the more high-poly and detailed ships.  Screenshots also showed some non-chibi models that looked really good, if I recall, so I’m kinda curious as to why they’re so bent on using these tiny, weirdly animated things for what is almost certainly going to be the intro.

        • Ladius

Yeah, if this is “awful” then most trailers of low budget jrpgs are. And this isn’t even as low budget as many other things.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Because I always support HD 2D sprites and anime openings. It’s different and…..Disgaea has male leads always even if one cute girl in the party is more popular to get her own dlc story. I’m not contradicting myself its just that I don’t like the ways that Compile Heart make some games.

The design is the issue as Zaron said the music doesn’t help neither.

  • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Didn’t took them very long to produce this game, did it?

  • Hexen

The ships reminds me of Skies of Arcadia.

Other than that, this trailer makes me High.

  • shion16

I think Harada talent is to create awesome gothic cute character designs.
But when theyre only cute…….is just good

    • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

He just never fails to disappoint anybody.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

They look the exact same as the Disgaea ones. Really.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

    Bleh…just forget what I said…just my opinion.

    • Gatchaman1

It looks just as good as Ni No Kuni, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Xillia and Time & Eternity? Dont think so…

      • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

        Whatever you say…

On second thought…forget what I said.

        • Gatchaman1

          damn straight

          • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

            If you say so.

      • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

As good as Disgaea and any other characters he made…

Not that any of your mentioned game would have better character design than Disgaea.

        • Gatchaman1

          Wut…

  • Raiu

When I first saw the screenshots of this game, I was excited but now after I saw the trailer, I’m having second thoughts… The animations look stiff and could use more work to be done.. The most of the characters are really cute I admit that much… I need to see gameplay footage to give a final say…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000147755574 Marcos Karal

… It sure looks like a Compile Hearts game
And the graphics look’s pretty good (for them), but animation does look bad.

… I’m waiting for a gameplay video to decide if I really buy this, I do love crazy games like Disgaea, so I’m kinda hyped for this one too

  • Thomas Maloney

I really want this to be the first good Compile heart game, but… Still not sure if want.

    • Luna Kazemaru

because argrest war wasn’t good at all :rolls eyes:

  • http://www.facebook.com/jraimey Justin Raimey

I bet this will be used for the intro.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Really like the music in the trailer, but the character designs look like they were done in a bout ten minutes. Still, I hope NISA or XSeed bring this here. More console RPG’s can’t be a bad thing.

  • Darkrise

This is a very ‘meh’ trailer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Pierre-Louis/667684607 Steven Pierre-Louis

yeah not terribly exciting.  The game still sounds really cool, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

    “Infinite Souls isn’t a strategy RPG” …………….yay!!

  • Mister_Nep

Very tempted to import this. Still have time to decide.

  • Go2hell66

is this game gonna be cel shaded? was hoping it would be 2D

  • Ladius

Looks really nice, obviously IFCH are investing more than their usual budget in this game. Harada’s character design in 3D is great, and the limited edition seems to be really tempting, too XD

“While the trailer doesn’t have gameplay footage, Infinite Souls isn’t a strategy RPG. The game uses a turn based battle system with up to 16 characters and swap them mid-battle to make a group of four active fighters.”

    Wow, sounds neat.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Hmm it was alright but the screenshots seem to be off from the video we are seeing idk maybe its just me it may improve before that date(even if its close I seen it happen). Knowing Compile Heart this game will be hard as hell.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000147755574 Marcos Karal

    Oh, hey. Airship Battles!

    http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/447/447067/c20120117_mugen_10_cs1w1_590x.jpg

Kinda reminds me of Skies of Arcadia

    • Croix

Airship battles!? More details on this and I’m likely sold. (I probably will be anyway as we learn more about this game)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

I’m not really a fan of this guy’s character designs simply because he seems to be adamantly against drawing girls with medium-sized boobs; They’re either huge bazooms on characters that pose suggestively or it’s a loli.

On a positive note, the trailer was interesting enough. It gave me a Rogue Galaxy/Shining Force EXA feeling, and I love both of those games, so I’ll wait to see more. As others have stated, the animations are a bit wonky at parts, so hopefully they fix that.

    • PoweredByHentai
      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

Fair enough. However, my point is still valid in that he favors the extremes way more than the middle.

        • PoweredByHentai

No he doesn’t.  Main characters tend to be the more popular characters in any series due to the amount of exposure they have.  Even if he is an artist and the character designer for the Disgaea/etc franchises, he still has to form an image based on the script and descriptions he receives.

If you haven’t noticed yet, a number of major characters in the franchises he worked on have medium-sized busts.

This bitching about bazooms and lolis is still stupidly wrong for a very simple reason: sprites.

Sprite resolution has never been great exactly because sprites are designed to take a very specific number of pixels, especially in an SRPG like the Disgaea series.  As a result, the discriminating factor comes down to displaying busts as “big” or “small/none”, because there isn’t a way for the audience to notice a “medium” unless you can zoom all the way in to see the individual sprites.

As a result, it becomes a “why bother” if the sprites can’t represent the design properly.

This is a problem that even HD resolution cannot solve unless the camera system gets completely revamped.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

I think he is talking more about a tendency lately wich is one of the main reason in most media nowadays but I don’t think Harada arts is a good example about not drawing medium-sized boobs.

          • PoweredByHentai

            Pay MOAR attention?

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

I wasn’t talking about the sprites, I meant the actual Character Art. And yes, you can design a sprite without making it ridiculously or super small. FFTactics is a good example of that, as the women in that have breasts without appearing lopsidedly big or intentionally small (be it for the purpose of breast jokes, which Disgaea and most Nis/Gust/etc games are known for) for the purpose of appealing to those specific demographics.

Don’t get me wrong, I like them just as much as the next person and, despite what I said up there, I don’t hate his art style. It’s the same problem I have with Akira Toriyama: after a while, it starts to feel uninspired at times and, unlike Toriyama, this guy’s art tends to lean more towards fanservice, which is a personal pet peeve of mine.

          • PoweredByHentai
          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

Look at classes like Monk, Mime, or Dancer. Each of those has female characters with relatively loose outfits that don’t completely cover their breasts and, lo and behold, they have breasts without appearing intentionally huge (Ie Fanservice posing) or too small (Ie appealing the the loli/small breasts demographic). They are women without being completely overt about it, which is the thing I like about that style and dislike about Disgaea’s artist’s style.

I’ve played all 3 Tactics games and Beaten 2 of them. Even then, I wouldn’t have had to have played the game to look at the art style, which is what I was talking about.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

What Bs are you calling me out on? If it’s about the differences between the Sprites and the character art, that has never been my topic. I’ve only been talking about the art, JUST the art, the entire time. I don’t care about the sprites, just the character art.

Even if I were talking about the sprites (Which I repeat, I am not), This game does not use sprites, so having the 2 main characters in this game be fanservicey Loli-esque characters (If 2 of the original released screenshots of them, one of which being a hottub scene) is not due to “sprite limitations” and hd resolutions. It just seems like more pandering, which is certainly his perogative and I can’t and won’t bash him for it. I just don’t like it.

          • PoweredByHentai

            @facebook-100000301072427:disqus :
And I posted a whole bunch of image links WITH those aforementioned character art from the FF Tactics series.  That was FF Tactics’s fanservice right there all those years ago.  The difference is that you never noticed it.

Regarding the loli-esque designs that you don’t like, sometimes it simply isn’t the designer’s choice.  At Idea Factory’s panel over at Anime Expo 2011, Sugano mentioned that he had designed Fyuria with medium sized chests but the project lead looked over it and told him to draw her as a flat-chested girl.  In Sugano’s case, he does find enjoyment in drawing/designing cute girls.

A lot of times, you simply won’t know about what goes through their minds in designing a character until you ask them up front about it.  As it is, you’re just judging people based on their work.

That would be like me bitching about how I hate the women in Mass Effect 2 because of how much they suck as party members and how the Bioware developers and artists must be a shitty bunch for that.

By the way, even if Infinite Souls doesn’t use sprites, it is using super-deformed characters in the vein of Nendoroids.

    • puchinri

Agreed on that. It’s one of the things that tends to bug me about his art the most, usually. In the end, it feels like it’s trying to pander to one side or the other (not to say some of the actual designs aren’t bad though).

Being at all like Rogue Galaxy does give it a +1. Or plus a lot. . .

  • AzureNova

WTF did I just watch!? My brain just exploded from all the random awesome! The trailer made me laugh, but in a good way though. At the end of it all, all I can say is dat airship lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/klaudkil Alex Cattaneo

looks awesome..hopefuly it will come out in the west

  • Jrpgfanatic

This screams Evolution meets Disgaea to me, looks pretty awesome!

  • HeatPhoenix

Models look nice, but the animation seems crap to me.

  • JustThisOne

Errh, the music… Well, everyone has their own tastes.

Everything looks cute, but it doesn’t look quite right in 3D. Or I guess, it loses a lot of cuteness in 3D. I feel like they’re little nendoroids fighting. I guess that’s kind of the point, too, since they’re probably going to make this into merchandise right away. (Actually, they already have.)

Anyway, I thought the trailer was good at portray cute as badass, in a Power Rangers kind of way. Cheesy, but intended.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fitzpatrick-Phillips/1786364591 Fitzpatrick Phillips

    Time Space Pirates?

Glad its looking good but I wanna see some battle system vids.
    Already pre-ordered it though.

  • http://www.hamstapowah.com/ Zaron

By the music, I’m left to wonder… did they get Sato along with Harada…?  Basically the perfect combo.

Not a fan of chibi models for EVERYTHINNNNNG but the ships look pretty nice.

    • MizuMikomi

Yes, on the web site Tenpei Sato is shown to be working on this game as well as Harada.

  • PK212

The pirate ship battles look cool but everyone looks like they are 8 XD

  • Okuni-chan

    I likes what I see
    (◕‿‿◕。) I will import if I must. (I’m so sorry wallet ;~;)

  • MizuMikomi

I had lost interest in this a while back, but actually seeing how it will somewhat look… interest is slowly returning.

Harada and Sato both working on it makes it really tempting to import that L. But if I end up caving, I’ll more than likely go with the standard edition.

  • http://twitter.com/ShadowJetX Edward Sayese

It looks kind of interesting, but does anyone else agree that CH/iF should invest in a more powerful graphical engine? I mean, come on man, its 2012.

  • Monkey_T

You can go ahead and try, Idea Factory, but your game will never be able to outclass Disgaea.

    • pockystix

well. . . you can tell they ARE trying

    • Bio_liquid

But it can up to par :p

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Something bugs me about the character design. Dunno what.

    • http://twitter.com/ShadowJetX Edward Sayese

I think its iF/CH’s stank of unoriginality has tainted Takehito’s work.

      • puchinri

It can’t be both of them being fairly unoriginal? (Not just exclusive to this, of course.)

  • pockystix

    hmmm

dunno, definitely looks like a game. . . just not sure what kind

  • exhume

Hahaha, this looks AMAZING! Those colours, the crazy designs, that music…looks like it’ll be a fun, lighthearted romp :)

    • AzureNova

      Romp lol

  • http://www.cubiz.co.cc/ Chris Thomas

Looks like a pretty fun game to me. Will play it if it is localized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ChrisDrake37 Chris Sánchez

inb4 some of these characters appear on Disgaea 5 whenever that comes out

  • amagidyne

Not an SRPG, then? I hope this won’t turn out like Hyperdimension Neptunia..

  • Kitestwinblades

So uh… When does the Anime air XD

The Character on the Queen of Hearts card
Looks like Takehito Harada’s version of Poison X3

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1769064526 Vivian Mai

The chibi models remind me of 7th Dragon 2020.

    Except I liked 7th’s chibis more….

  • http://iron2000.blogspot.com/ iron2000

So this game plays somewhat like .hack?
    Explore area and fight enemies?

The music and character design are so very Disgaea that it made me think its a SRPG.

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

I don’t know what to make of this. There was so much colour though!

  • puchinri

The actual character art and designs look pretty cute and cool, but something looks a little funny with the in-game models. Just a little.

Playing as Mint 2.O sounds fun though~. (Maybe this will encourage Squeenix to give Threads of Fate/Dewprism either a remake or a sequel. Not very likely, but I can dream.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000619126996 Emma R Hill

Anything Takehito Harada and Tenpei Sato work on…I will buy! Also, Altis!~ *squee* (*^ワ^*)
