If The Internet Raises $2000, Everyone Can Play An Unreleased Resident Evil Game

By Spencer . January 29, 2012 . 10:18am

If The Internet Raises $2000, Everyone Can Play An Unreleased Resident Evil GameBefore Capcom created Resident Evil Gaiden for Game Boy Color, they were working on a port of the original Resident Evil with HotGen. The game was reported to be near complete, but Capcom canned the project citing quality concerns. Resident Evil for GBC never saw the light of day aside from a few gameplay videos.

We *might* be able to play it, though.

A collector has two prototype carts that let players shoot zombie sprites with a shotgun and see some of the game’s event scenes. Both will be released on the Internet if the collector receives a $2000 bounty.

Details about the fundraiser are here, which has over $500 $1,498.63 in the pool so far and hundreds of dollars of promised donations. $2000 is a chunk of change, but many prototype games, even those now readily available, are dumped for a price.

No thanks. The only Unreleased Capcom game I wanna play is AAI2 in English. I’d donate money to that in a heartbeat.

    • Sal

That and MML3 is what made the fans mad at capcom. They should do something like this for these games instead so they can earn back the fans’ trust.

  • idrawrobots

Is this just going to a person and not a charity?

  • Go2hell66

you want to give this guy $2000 for a bootleg ResEvil game that anyone could have made?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Phil-Reic/1461808155 Phil Reic

Give us Resident Evil 1.5, Capcom!

  • http://twitter.com/JezzSan Jezzy

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just rob the guy?

  • malek86

There must be a reason this game was never released. Maybe it’s actually better not to unleash it upon the world?

    • theworldofnoboundries

U mean this game is at abomination level like Dr Jekkyl and Mr Hyde?

    • http://twitter.com/OKeijiDragon Irvin

I don’t know about you, buy we’ll never get Resident Evil 1.5 thinking that way.

    i demand RE 3.5

  • http://twitter.com/TheGrimHeaper The Grim Heaper

Sounds like the money is going straight to him and not charity or something.

    No thanks!

If that’s what he wants, then fine. I support.

They’re actually up to about $1500 now. Very close, hopefully this story helps.

  • Hraesvelgr

Looking at the screenshots, it really does not look like something anyone should be giving money for, but it’s not like I can do much about how others waste their money.

    • http://twitter.com/vz2250 fwafewfe faffewfew

remove yourself from the gene pool, f_ckwit.

  • RupanIII

Well, if you believe the OP, at $2k the seller will still be losing money from what he paid to get it.

Sounds interesting, I’ll download it when they release it (pretty sure it’ll hit 2k if they’re at 1500 now)

  • thaKingRocka

I have a question regarding the legality of this: … is it legal?

    • Monsley

I was wondering the same thing. I mean, he’s basically selling a ROM… which I wouldn’t mind, if the money went to charity or something, but if he just keeps them, well… no me gusta.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I’m going to skip out on that one. Capcom needs to think of a better way…

    • brian yep

Capcom has nothing to do with this particular cash grab.
      Looks that way at least.

      • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

        I guess I wasn’t thinking right.

  • skymap

    Not 1.5? … Hm.

    no thanks :P

Who would pool 2000 bucks for an awful game? Oh, that’s right, RE fans will buy just about anything these days.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

(❁_❁) Oh my god…….this is the best GBC game that I’ve ever seen…..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShC8zJgbTts

The graphics for a GBC game look amazing, the soundtrack is just fantastic, the voice acting is astounding, and the characters look so…….lifelike.  (❁_❁)

Okay. I’m obviously joking, but I’m curious enough to play it though. I’ll just wait it out (even though honestly, I’m not spending my money for something like this. I mean…..really? They want an overall amount of 2 GRAND and they’ll give this away?! An obvious pass IMO. ಠ_ಠ) and hope that I can play it since the article said that you *might* be able to play it.

(It’d be awful if the people who spent their money on the fundraiser found out that they’re aren’t going to play the game anyway)

  • brian yep

And still no port of Sweet Home.

    • ShadowWolf

      indeed

i’d like to see a port to.

  • http://twitter.com/VasiliiHellsing Vasilii Hellsing

Okay, I AM Resident Evil FREAK but I won’t pay a penny for this. I’d rather buy GameBoy with Resident Evil Gaiden. Good luck, dude!

  • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

That’s pretty awesome.  I am sure there is some hardcore RE fan out there ready to drop $2000 for that.

  • Selaphiel

Ugh, really? If I was lucky enough to have a prototype I’d dump it for free.

    • 128bitigor

      yeah yeah…

    • Belphybear

So you would spend a large sum of money to have the prototype and then dump it for free?

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

What if this is actually a huge scam? The guy is taking home 2k usd and everyone’s egging him on lol. I dunno, I don’t trust this guy somehow.

Anyway, even if he’s for real, I just don’t think this is worth that much. It’s a piece of history but…is it really worth that much?

  • 128bitigor

what a bunch of hypocrites over here. It’s a business and he probably has one of the rarest game prototypes in the world and by sharing it he somewhat lowers the value of physical copy.

And hey, if you’d have a chance to get 2000 dollars, would you pass on such an opportunity? I would call you an idiot if you did. Still, I would love to see RE 3.5 rather than this.

    • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

That’s nice that you love this idea I guess, but I think calling us such a insult (hypocrites) is totally rude and unnecessary (especially since they’re a bunch of opinions). If you don’t like them, ignore them (unless they’re totally dumb, which most here are not), but please don’t insult the whole community (or at least use a different wording) because of that. ‘Kay? :)

      • WizardoftheBlueOrder

I wouldn’t call the community hypocrites, but I do agree with 128bitigor’s distaste at the general emotion of the comments for this article.

Strictly from a “I want to play games” perspective, this isn’t a very useful donation drive. But prototype game roms are pretty nifty things, as they often show some of the thought process the team was using, as well as occasionally offer some insight into a game series. (And besides, they’re often rare or even unique.)

And by dumping the roms and putting them online, the value of the prototype carts plummets significantly. He is killing the market value of his possession in order to offer something interesting to the gaming community as a whole.

I would say that those making comments here may not benefit from it, but complaining that it’s an upload of an “incomplete game” or calling it a bootleg…that’s kind of missing the point of what’s being offered.

I mean, for those who care, there is the excellent tale of Bio Force Ape: http://lostlevels.org/bio-force-ape/

Prototypes and unreleased games are cool things, and when the decision is to either kill their market value but give the community something cool, or retain the market value but leave it languishing in the hands of one collector, I’d hope to move toward former every time.

        • 128bitigor

Isn’t it ironic that you found being called a “hypocrite” an insult (wat) and yet I was told to ignore complaining comments? Not that people didn’t waste here breath on something they weren’t going to support anyway, huh?

I’d love to see how many of these “apalled” complainers will actually run the game rom in the future. The way how irony in life works, pretty much most of them.

  • JustThisOne

Reminds me of Resident Evil Gaiden.

  • Hinataharem

Why would I give this clown my money?

    • d19xx

He’ll make you a balloon puppy?

  • DemonicX

    …Really?

I also can not believe that people are actually giving up their money for this..*sigh*

    It’s not even complete…

    • http://twitter.com/OKeijiDragon Irvin

Dude, this is the internet. People bid for far beyond more on eBay auctions for older, seemingly less worthwhile memorabilia of such things. This kind of stuff doesn’t surprise me at the least.

    • Belphybear

Your point is? There are a number of incomplete games/betas that have been insightful to the ideas or how the game developed over time; like Star Fox 2, Earthbound Zero and Sonic 2 Beta. Then there are games that were completed but were never released like Propeller Arena and Half Life on the Dreamcast. It’s because of these donations/fundraisers we can actually play them.

  • Solomon_Kano

    … no.

I’m currently playing the first Resident Evil for the first time and that’s hardly aged well, so why the hell would anybody want an unfinished Game Boy port of it?

  • Deluode Koyor

In other words someone just most likely edited some sprites within the GBC game & wants to proclaim that it’s an “unreleased version” of a game. Thus the person decided to just make some money off if it at the same time.

  • Corey Scott

You’re all kind of missing some important facts.

First of all, when you own something like a prototype and you are a collector, these things have a value. Usually you bought them for a ridiculous amount to begin with, or other people are interested in your lucky find and would pay large sums on Ebay. Once a prototype is dumped in to the wild, the price for it is immediately tarnished as the data is no longer a rarity. Undumped prototypes go for huge amounts and this is what leads to the serious amount of hoarded prototypes that are known of to this day.

Second, bit rot. “Bit rot, also known as bit decay, data rot, or data decay, is a colloquial computing term used to describe either a gradual decay of storage media or the degradation of a software program over time.”

Prototype cartridges almost always come as EPROMs, which over time lose charge and the data become corrupt, often unfixable. What’s worse, a simple flash of UV light (People who take flash photography of uncovered EPROMs are bad people) will erase the entire chip. The prototype would be nothing more than a board with a blank chip on it.

So you see, not only is the dumper going to lose out on the potentially massive amount of income he could make off just selling it to a collector, but if he doesn’t dump it eventually it may become useless. The amount he is asking for is a measly amount in comparison to what hot prototypes usually go for. This means he doesn’t completely ruin his lucrative chances and also redistributes it for everyone.

Third! I almost forgot third. The person who has this prototype has for a few months made it very clear that it is a very real prototype. This is not a prototype of a released game, it is not a sprite edit, it directly matches original screenshots, faking this would require writing an entirely new engine.

Edit: Oh, well would you look at that. “This is a non profit release; infact, the owner is taking quite a substantial hit on this one.”

    • http://twitter.com/OKeijiDragon Irvin

Thank you for clearing this up for people, Corey!

I can’t believe the level of misunderstanding the press and people have on this fundraiser.

To tackle some of the peoples perceptions of this; it’s a prototype people, of course it’s not complete. It’s asinine to expect a completed game in any video game prototype.

And so what if this looks totally obsolete, it’s a FREAKING GAME BOY COLOR GAME. You shouldn’t expect something better from a GBC title. There were not many good looking GBC games from third parties back in that time. Those who expected something grander from this RE port need to re-evaluate their expectations. But I digress.

I hope the amount is met, and the game is preserved. This to me, is too interesting of a title to pass up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

    This game is probably terrible.

  • theworldofnoboundries

This is not a bad practice by the owner of the prototype lol. As i believe he has spend a big amount of money to get his hand on the game, so he will just release the game to other players to play but with a little amount of money.(Well 2 grand…… thatts not little on my country but who knows in U.S?)

  • Setsu Oh

WHEN will capcom release that (first?) level of the unreleased-RE4? the MOW terry bogard’s vest clad leon kennedy some footage was released of sometime before they totally rethink RE4? i’m interested in playing some ‘new’ stuff from the old stuff.
for those with difficulty deciphering my way of talking, i’m not sorry; but here is the translation: remember that footage of RE4 with leon in a castle battling a subboss with a hook(the boss, not leon)? when will they release that just for kicks? i wanted it for the anniversairy(any!) and it didn’t show. i’m sure both RE4and 2 earlier works are in their drawers somewhere. if they could unbug them and release them with RE6 or something as bonus unlockables…i’d be happy.

  • Mohammad Ali Moslemi

Pfft, let me know when someone has prototype discs for Resident Evil 1.5 or those canned RE4 versions, then we’ll talk.

    • SeventhEvening

I was hoping that was what this article was about when I read the title. I really want to play 1.5.

  • Belphybear

I find it disheartening that the prototype is getting slagged off a lot in the comments.

Isn’t this is the unreleased GBC version of Resident Evil that got over 90% in Nintendo Official Magazine before Capcom decided to release Resident Evil Gaiden instead? From what I remember, Gaiden wasn’t that well received.

    • thebanditking

Looks like the same game but from what I read here its not the whole game, just the prototype, I can’t believe after all these years no one leaked the review copy ROM. Oh and Gaiden was more then “not well received” it was a total turd of a game, lol.

    …if there is any.
