Final Fantasy XIII-2 Playtest: Time For A Change

Final Fantasy XIII 2 Playtest: Time For A Change

Lightning defied destiny in Final Fantasy XIII and finds herself trapped in Valhalla after saving the world. Final Fantasy XIII-2 begins with Lightning riding Odin in a post-apocalyptic backdrop about to fight Caius Ballad, this game’s villain. The two characters clash and you control Lightning as she soars through the sky shooting Chaos Bahamut. Cinematic actions, essentially Final Fantasy XIII-2′s take on quick time events, are introduced here as players flick the analog stick to slash at Caius. During the battle, Noel drops in through the sky. Lightning catches the wandering time traveler, pulls a moogle out of nowhere (a stark contrast from the ruinous world), and asks him to find her sister, Serah.

The story then switches to Serah who has been living with NORA and working as a teacher. What’s NORA? Final Fantasy XIII-2 glosses over the details and expects players already know the characters and mythology established by the previous game. I think newcomers can still jump right into Final Fantasy XIII-2, but they’ll see the story as a time paradox resolving romp with jargon like "Fal’Cie." While Serah knows Lightning is alive, everyone else believes she’s dead. Well, Noel knows too and he comes into Serah’s life crashing from the sky again. A light envelops Serah (that magically changes her clothes!? Serah points this oddity out too.) and she runs outside in the middle of a warzone.

Noel hands Serah the transforming moogle and the two of them take on monsters using the Command Synergy Battle system. Just like Final Fantasy XIII, you rapidly change roles using the Paradigm Shifts to switch between attacking, chaining, and defending. Most encounters take seconds to beat, if you blast monsters with magic and follow up with commandos to deal damage. Square Enix made a few tweaks for Final Fantasy XIII-2. You can change leaders during a fight and if Serah gets knocked out control automatically goes to Noel. Monsters can "wound" characters and deal blood damage that lowers the amount of HP they can recover until an encounter is over. The biggest change is the third "member" in your party. Serah learns how to control monsters in the first few hours of the game and a creature takes up the remaining party member spot. Each monster has a single role like Commando (melee), Synergist (buffer) or Healer. Since you can rotate between three monsters in battle by using Paradigm Shifts its usually best to have monsters with three different roles.

Monsters have their own Crystarium and instead of experience points they require items to grow. You can also add passive skills through infusion, which has players sacrifice a monster to transfer its abilities. Leave your Pokeballs and negotiation skills at home, you gain new monsters in Final Fantasy XIII-2 from crystals simply earned as battle spoils. While many monsters are palette swaps, they have a unique set of attacks and limit break style Feral Link. Chocobos kick enemies to death with Kweh and a Garchimacera uses multicast. Having a Chocobo is pretty neat, but most of the monsters fall into the generic creature category even after decorating them with ribbons and Carbuncle statues. Square Enix changed how Serah and Noel develop too. Both characters move along a Crystarium grid where all roles are merged into one. You can unlock other roles like Medic, Synergist, and Saboteur pretty quickly or opt to add more ATB bars instead of paradigms.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 gives players choice how they want to progress through the game. Using the Historia Crux system you can see the world at different points in time. It’s possible to visit areas out of order and even enter some dungeons early, but Final Fantasy XIII-2 is still essentially linear. You need to find specific Artefacts, out of place objects due to the time paradox, to open each Time Gates, which is a door to a new area. Areas are more open with treasure to find and side quests (usually item fetching) if you stop to talk to wandering people. The world feels less lonely since Noel and Serah overhear conversations where NPCs prattle on about cats and dogs. Instead of "towns" with multiple shops, Final Fantasy XIII-2 has what I would say are "town squares" populated with people and one bikini-wearing time traveler. You’ll see Chocolina again and again peddling weapons and accessories.

Square Enix also threw in distractions like Serendipity, Final Fantasy XIII-2′s answer to the Golden Saucer, which has slot machines and Chocobo Racing mini-games. Want to take a breather from the main story? There are 160 fragments hidden in the game to find. You can even rewind time and reset an area to before Serah and Noel arrived. This allows players to replay areas and make different choices. All of these features are introduced quickly and it’s clear Square Enix want Final Fantasy XIII-2 to feel more varied than the previous game. For the most part it works, but Temporal Rifts, Final Fantasy XIII-2′s puzzles, feel shoehorned into the game. Certain areas force players to run on vanishing tiles or make crystals disappear by standing on clock hands. When you’re curious about what’s next in the story… it’s time to connect colored crystals.

Fan feedback about Final Fantasy XIII didn’t go unnoticed by the 1st Production Team, but I think fans may be disappointed about the story in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Serah is the exact opposite of Lightning and acts as a stereotypical insecure lead. Noel steals the show with an empathetic back story of being the last human and being a character with enough gall to point out how one dimensional Serah’s fiancé is. Hope reappears with an air of maturity and while it’s nice to see how much he’s grown you’ll probably scratch your head asking where’s everyone else in the game. Serah actually asks Hope about Sazh and that’s all you’ll hear about him. Even Serah’s relationship with Snow was only quickly addressed with awkward interactions between the couple. Other than Lightning and Hope, the other characters from Final Fantasy XIII take a backseat to Serah’s time traveling adventure.

It appears Square Enix will fill in the gaps between the two games with downloadable content. Other features like the coliseum appear to be DLC only too. While you can visit the arena, there isn’t anything to fight since the Omega boss battle is a pre-order bonus. There’s still plenty to do in Final Fantasy XIII-2 and more after you complete the game once. Paths for alternate endings open up, which should keep Final Fantasy fans playing XIII-2 well beyond the twenty hour main story.

Is this the Final Fantasy fans have been clamoring for? I’m not sure. Square Enix responded to Final Fantasy XIII criticism in an unprecedented way by checking off an Internet wish list. While the game feels disjoined at times as you’re whisked away from one area to the next, Final Fantasy XIII-2 addresses gameplay concerns. Perhaps, we’ll see Square Enix tackle questions about Final Fantasy XIII and now XIII-2′s mythology with future games or DLC when fans complete XIII-2 and discuss the game’s story.

So this game is purposefully unfinished is what I got from this hands on.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I don’t think Spencer said anything of the sort.

      • SetzerGabbiani

        I’m mostly being hyperbolic.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I’m not so sure what he said wasn’t far from the truth. There is evidence from youtube vids and people’s accounts that the “true ending” to the game will be continued later on (if this is a full-blown sequel or just DLC is debatable). If that’s not unfinished, I don’t know what is.

Or it could just be a cliffhanger for separate events in the storyline. Who knows…

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

20 hours? That’s not very long at all. Even FFIX had you do 20 hour speed run just to get Steiner’s ultimate weapon. I’m guessing this is the shortest FF ever. Though, it is nice to hear that most things have been addressed (or slightly addressed), like overall linearity, battle system, and crystarium grid, but at the expense of certain character developments and (again) story-line. Also, how do you have a coliseum with no opponents until you get DLC? WTF backwards thinking is this? As much as I don’t want to say it, could the 3rd time around be the charm? =(

    • 27CansOfTuna

That is shocking, at 20 hours it must be able to be platinum’d in like up to 60. Interesting.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

12 hours actually, but I get what you’re saying.

  • Go2hell66

    Only 20 hours :(
    *faints*

    • http://twitter.com/saintgalgo Bruno Cesar

I finished the main story with 35 hours and only 1/4 or so of the fragments collected. By the time I Platinumed it I had almost 100+ hours.

Spencer, how many Fragments you had? o_O

      • Aoshi00

I’m guessing Spence mainly went thru the absolute essentials?  I clocked in at ~45 hrs and only found 60 out of 160 fragments.. and got 3 optional endings in addition to the main one, and there’s still a heck of a lot I haven’t done..

At any rate, looking forward to playing it again in Eng, BB sent me a pick up notice alrdy.  Still haven’t finished reading Fragments Before yet *.*… I just remember playing this for 2-3 weeks night after night and really got into it.. compared to 13, where I finished Ch.1-10 in about 25hrs, then didn’t go back to finish it until 3 months later (right before the US release)..

Like Last Story I heard some Jpn gamers could finish it in under 30 hrs.. but I do this and that along the way and finished the game in over 45 hrs, w/ multiplayer and other stuffs making it like 55.. I never really blazed thru any game anyway.. I don’t platinum or 1000 anything just for completion’s sake, but I keep playing a game that I like to get the most out of it (still missing two chapters of Snow’s story).. even for Xenosaga or Nier, I loved doing the fetch quests because I liked those worlds so much..

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

20 hours is the *main* story as explained above. FFXIII-2 is much longer once you start hunting fragments and searching for Paradox Endings (which I won’t spoil here!)

  • 27CansOfTuna

Ill probably get this in two weeks.  Hope and Noel is reason enough to buy it, almost like a dream come true. Look flashy.

Id probably love it as I did enjoy FFXIII immensely.

    • Aoshi00

And yet Noel and Hope can’t make you Day 1 baby the sequel to your favorite Final Fantasy?  I’m disappoint..   Seriously though, Hope is very cool in this game, cooler than the Raiden transformation in my book.. Him and Lightning would make a great couple…

      • 27CansOfTuna

hefty taxes devastated my gaming fund, lol, so I have to play catch up (though I would never miss Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations on Day 1 even if I have to miss out on lunch for weeks).

        HopeLight shipping FTW

        • Aoshi00

That’s too bad.. but if you do plan on getting this soon, it’s probably better to take advantage of some good deals in the first week, Target gives $20 gift card (not sure if you got one near you), and Amazon is no tax w/ $10 credit as well.. gaming fund depleted, I don’t believe ya :)…  New Naruto game does look good though.  Viva Hopester x Light!

          • SerendipityX

*le gasp*  I don’t believe it either! Tsuna’s blackhole-ish gaming fund depleted? Blasphemy!(^o^) FFXIII-2 Day 1! (at least for me) lol

          • Aoshi00

The thought of Tsuna skipping lunches to buy games day 1, the economy can’t be that bad huh :) If he’s getting it in 2 weeks, he might as well order it from Amazon now, they just matched Target by giving $20 credit (Buy.com was giving 2000 Rakuten points a while ago equal to $20).. Too bad only for the regular and not the limited edition.. well, picking it up from Best Buy tonight, kinda wanna skip work lol.. and Asura’s Wrath from Gamestop *.* later this month.. I’ve debated before whether I wanted to get the regular ed for $40 or LE for $80, but I want the soundtrack and ep i hardcover novella/artbook from BB..

  • Natat

Wow this seems a little… underwhelming, honestly. I don’t think I’ll get this anytime soon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002475904674 Nicholas Suarez

Twenty hours? …well, with school, and the fact that I unintentionally insist on getting lost, this will be lasting longer for me XD

  • Azuku

I tried the Asura’s Wrath and FFXIII-2 demos last night, and in my brazen insanity played Asura’s Wrath first. After completing that and starting XIII-2, during the first Atlas fight, I was fully expecting Noel to counter Atlas’ giant fist with his own fist (in the form of a button mashing QTE, of course). The result was hilarious.

    • Göran Isacson

… Oh my God that. That would have been crazy, but also kind of awesome. I want to see Asura cross-over to RPG-games now, if only because of how completely inappropriate he is to a game with a slower pace than crazy Asuras Wrath.

  • http://twitter.com/saintgalgo Bruno Cesar

Uh… there’s more Sazh in the game, and certain other characters too. I’ll leave it as that. Well, unless they changed it in the localization.
And I disagree on certain points. I enjoyed the game and it’s not unfinished or incomplete for me. I don’t know what people expected.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

You don’t know what people expect? These are just a couple of guesses, but I’ll give it a shot.

More characters permanently playable. Extra bosses such as Omega should’ve already been included in the game.

      • http://twitter.com/saintgalgo Bruno Cesar

I’ll give you the permanently playable characters problem (even if it wouldn’t  really matter for me in this game), but there’s plenty of extra bosses and superbosses in the game, actually. Omega is just… more.
I… I’m actually glad they’re expanding an already “large” game with the DLC./runs

        capcom syndrome

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Yeah, Sazh pops up again, but I wasn’t going to spoil that bit. The cast of XIII are more like “cameos” for XIII-2 than integrated deeply into the story well other than Lightning and Hope.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

“Noel steals the show with an empathetic back story of being the last
human and being a character with enough gall to point out how one
    dimensional Serah’s fiancé is.”

Did he say “you’re too good for him?” LOL And why wouldn’t she be?

I liked the demo as well as the incredible soundtrack. I wish I could get it, but Soul Calibur 5 is released the same day, so I’ll get that instead. Can’t wait to hear how my friends ragefit on XIII-2 this time…(-_-#)

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

I probably shouldn’t spoil it so I won’t, but the scene was quite critical of Snow and he didn’t exactly disagree either.

      • ShadowScipio

Wait, are you saying Snow didn’t disagree with the criticisms about him or that Noel didn’t disagree with the criticisms about Snow?  Sorry for not understanding.  I gotta say though, Snow probably should have kept the beanie.

When all is said and done, though, I ended up kinda actually liking Snow in the first one and I just wouldn’t like it if he got NTR’d what with his fiance having an epic journey alone with a dude who supposedly is an all around better character.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Jumbo Cactuar here I come! (You can get it, right?) Thanks for the playtest, though I’m not expecting the best game in the world I think I’ll enjoy it. I have played and beaten  Skyward Sword and I loved that game a lot as I was playing it. I feel a lot of love and consideration was made with the game and this feeling I haven’t felt in a while. What I’m trying to say is I’m not expecting this game to give me the same feeling, but I hope another Final Fantasy game will (and maybe this one too, but I’m feeling a little skeptic). XIII’s main quest was alright (I like the bosses though) but it did not give me that Skyward Sword feeling either (it’s definitely not nostalgia as I’ve only really played one Zelda before that lol). Again thanks for the playtest!

  • http://radiantloki.blogspot.com/ Mark Dinh

Hey guys, can you answer my question… Even though I read many reviews already, I want to get your guys points… I’m getting the game tomorrow, when it’s  FINALLY RELEASED! I loved XIII’s everything! I played the demo, and it was great. It just the only thing I hate is that it’s only two humanoid character still. How is it? How is the Histria Crox or how you spell it? I didn’t really much care for the linear-gameplay in the original… in fact, that is why I liked it. I didn’t get side-track or anything. Loved the gameplay, and loved the little improvements they have done. Please tell me :D

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

How is it using two human characters only? Fine and if you like Pokemon or SMT I guess collecting and leveling up monsters is one more thing to do in XIII-2.

So, I’m not sure I understand your question about the Historia Crux… you didn’t care for the linear gameplay in XIII, but that’s why you liked it? I think I summarized most of the changes in XIII-2 above (might want to read that!), but even with the Historia Crux system the core story is mostly linear. You can visit some areas out of order, but you need to find specific Artefacts to open time gates to progress through the story. Perhaps, think of the main story like a tree trunk and side quests as branches you can go off and explore.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

While FFXIII didn’t meet all my expectations, I’m really excited about FFXIII-2. I might get it tomorrow or next week. Based on what you said, it seems like I’d be really interested.

I liked the combat and the story in FFXIII, but what made me quit it was the long repetitive dungeons and lack of freedom.  (Although the ‘BWA HA HA’-ness of the villains didn’t help.) I’ll give this game a shot but I want to find FFXIII spoilers somewhere, because I have no intention of finishing it.

It’s Chrono Trigger HD, branded a Final Fantasy, but still story’s awful.
I guess Final Fantasy is dead as a franchise.

C’mon GUST! Give me Ciel nosurge!

    • Croix

It’s more of a mashup of the time travel in Radiant Historia and the monster catching system in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Knight of Ratatosk if you played the JPN version) with the core battle system of FFXIII carried over. Notably, however, that’s not necessarily a bad combination of elements. If this is Square addressing the criticisms of FFXIII in a new game (which is already a very interesting move for a developer to make in making it a sequel), I feel like they didn’t think hard enough about what the strengths of the previous game were. Granted, I’m saying that based only on what I’ve heard about the game not having played it yet, but I have heard a lot, and I think it’s enough to make that statement with some confidence.

    • http://www.facebook.com/benjtan Benjamin Tan

noel is awful, why no snow / sazh or even hope as main char?

    • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

I guess Final Fantasy is dead as a franchise.

I might have agreed if Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2 and XIV were the only titles sporting the brand these days, but Final Fantasy Type-0, Crisis Core, 4 Heroes of Light, Tactics A2, Revenant Wings, and all of the wonderful remakes exist, so.. nope.

Versus XIII also looks and sounds better than XIII ever did, and Nomura has yet to make a truly bad game, so there’s that as well.

After playing the demo, I have to admit that I really liked the “wound” system. I’m not saying that Final Fantasy XIII was easy all the time, but when everyone can heal and do so with a simple paradigm change you kind of need to add something to make sure that there’s still some tension in the fights. Of course, you do have tension in fights like the final boss who has instant death attacks… but with this feature they can give you a different kind of tension. One that maybe forces you to really switch between roles that let you minimize damage, instead of doing what I did and just bulldoze through almost every fight and attack attack attack.

When I wasn’t just letting the buffers and debuffers go crazy, then heal, then attack attack attack. Won many a fight with that method. Too many.

I’m sorta glad XIII wasn’t as well received with fans and critics because the obsessiveness of VII’s fandom killed my interest in playing VII which I could barely bring myself to play. Many of the games such as VIII and X have their own fans even though they aren’t as well received as VII why shouldn’t XIII have its own cult following?

IX is a great game too that’s not spoiled by fandom.

    • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

True that.. As for me.. The reason why I like FFVII was not because of the game itself.. But because of its epic prequel.. And That was really a tittle people always forget… sigh..

Anyway, why must SE do things like this?? They address the gameplay but decide to ditch all the old characters..?! Man.. Atleast have Hope in the crew… Or Sazh or his son.. Meh..  I will still play it anyway… Lol…

Still waiting for the game to be delivered here in my country… but I’m not expecting it too much fearing that in the end it will be like FFXIII…

For me, the series has declined severely in terms of gameplay and exploration since FFX… and with FFXIII, the story as well has lost its bright. They are just sacrificing gameplay for the sake of realism which, in my opinion, will drive the series to an end if they don’t change their concept of an RPG Final Fantasy needs to be or, to be more precise, return the FF series to its original concept… I don’t like to compare games but take a look at the Tales series… Their games are top notch with great story and great gameplay and still preserves it in PS3 with games such as Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Graces and, from what I’ve heard, Tales of Xillia as well.

I like both of these series but if ask me, the FF series is no longer the great series it was in the past and I fear that it can become worst than already is. Let’s just hope it won’t happen.
