Kingdom Hearts 3D’s Reality Shift Moves The Action To The Touch Screen

By Spencer . January 30, 2012 . 2:03am

One of the new moves in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is the reality shift, which has players pull out the stylus to attack. Players can activate a reality shift by pressing X+A when a pink marker shows up on the touch screen.

The Reality Shift you do depends on what world you’re in. "Slingshot" is Traverse Town’s Reality Shift. You use "Holy Rope" in La Cité des Cloches and "Wonder Comic" turns the world into a comic book in Country of the Musketeers.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is slated for release on March 29.

Glad to see they’re using the touchscreen in creative ways, can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with for the other worlds!

The gameplay is cool and unique and all but if you’re going to play mostly with the buttons it’s kinda hard bringing out your stylus and putting it back just for this particular move, unless you always have to hold onto the stylus while battling normally or maybe placing it first on a table if you need it.

You can also use your fingernail, ignoring the stylus completely. I say fingernail because the touchscreen doesn’t always register inputs I try with my the finger itself.

      • XypherCode

Yeah that’s basically the problem with resistive touch screens. It’s better to use your nails or the stylus rather than the fingers themselves.

That’s why I wish the stylus was on the side of the system (like on the DSi), rather than awkwardly placed in the middle of the back. Of course, with the Circle Pad add-on, I guess that wouldn’t work well either…

      *Still hoping for a 3DS Lite… please, Nintendo…*

Seems interesting at least. I’m totally hyped for this game so yah…

The moment of panic when people playing this with the Circle Pad Pro realise you can’t get to the stylus with it connected will be amusing…

You can always use the tip of your fingers, or keep the stylus in hand when the time to use it comes.

    • James Beatty

You can always pause, pop the system out and take off the stylus. Or, you can use your finger. The Thumb strap would be your best option though

It takes a Pro to play with the stylus in hand  ^_^

Now SE is thinking with portals.

The one thing I worry about is if the touchscreen use will break the flow of the combat. The things I’m seeing make it look like it could, but TWEWY was able to pull off fast paced combat with buttons and stylus so we’ll see.

they need a release date for the US i really need to add this to my kingdom hearts inventory

    • SuigetsuHiramura

They already have the game up for preorder on GameStop.com, but they haven’t given a release date yet.  Nevertheless, I’m assuming we’ll be getting it soon enough :)

  • SuigetsuHiramura

Well, it certainly adds flavor to the battles XD

Touchscreen controls? Don’t need no stylus.

    My nails are ready.

I had a finger stylus a few years ago. Though if you used a size two tight it would cut the circulation.

… Do not know if want. This looks far too gimmicky for my tastes. Warning: A total nerd is going to get WAY too TL;DR about silly cross-over games now.

When I first heard about the “Reality Shift” mechanic I was expecting something more. My reaction to this video was pretty much just “How is this attack a more attractive alternative to simply wailing on the enemy using regular attacks?” The attack that was now revealed as “Holy Rope” was something I was at first excited about because it looked like a regularly occuring mechanic, meant to be a way for the player to trace a route and then have Sora or Riku dash lightning quick through the stage… an easier way to handle the high speed I’ve heard this game features. Now, that I find out that it’s restricted to a single level on the game… I am dissapoint.

Kingdom Hearts 2 had the problem where you had so many options, yet the simplest were ALWAYS the best option. Hammer the attack button and occasionally the triangle is all you need because of the strength and speed of your reular attacks.  Spells, drives, the special summon attacks, the team-up attacks… you almos NEVER used them because you didn’t have to, button-mashing was more than enough to take you through the fights. That is my greatest fear with this feature- that it will end up consuming so much time and effort in return for damage that I could do much quicker and simpler by just hammering the attack button, that it just goes unused.

Still, I hope I’m wrong. I think that Days did a good job of giving the player options that actually MATTERED in the long run, that made choice of what attack-panels you picked important in the long run, and while the D-Links in BBS mostly went unused (save for the XP-enhancing ones, Mickey fo’ life witches) the Shoot Locks were useful without being overpowered and building your own commands could result in broken set-ups, but the set-ups were still somewhat limited and personal,  so they felt more involving than KH2′s abilities where you could just equip darn near everything and crush the opposition utterly. What I’m saying is that I hope they keep on the trend of engaging battle systems, rather than the overly glitzy and simplified slog that was Kingdom Hearts 2.

Aw, man… I usually suck with the touchscreen. And I suck when it comes to using my fingers for any real time thing that isn’t a menu option. >x<
