The Last Story English Screens Dress Up Zael

Along with an English trailer, we have a few English screenshots of The Last Story. Who’s Zael? That’s the game’s protagonist also known as Elza in the Japanese version. Zael is a mercenary living on Lazulis Island. He gains a mystical power called the gathering and controls wind. He, like his other mercenary comrades, dream of being a knight.

While Elza isn’t a knight, you can dress him like one. The Last Story features a character customization system that lets you equip armor and choose the color of his gear. The Last Story comes out on February 24 in Europe.

At least breaking the region lock on Wii is extremely easy now.

  • MrRobbyM

This game is going to look great emulated. But of course I’m buying it for support!

  • ReevesSingleton

I want this game more with every minuscule snippet I see. It makes me drool with desire, quiver with anticipation, and throb with the pain of realizing it will never get an official release in the states.

Man this game looks gorgeous, they really wen’t all out to push the Wii’s capabilities as much as they can muster.

Seriously, what was wrong with “Elza” in the first place?
The whole renaming thing seems a bit pointless in my opinion. It seems like the Japanese names were sort of easy to transfer to English to begin with, but they had to change them?
    I like the dubbing though.

    • Gatchaman1

Elza is an old German word for woman

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J24UY7QAEKQY576PHZYS3EN6BA Celine

Pffft, I did not know that, but now that I do I’m never going to be able to keep a straight face when I play the Japanese version XD

    • kylehyde

Well is a very common woman name in some western countries (Spain among them and we have to remember that this game is going to be published in all Europe) so probably they fell that it would be a little confusing or ankward for some european players having to play as a guy called Elza, actually I have a female cousin called Elza. Personally I don’t mind playing with a guy called Elza, but I suspected from a beginning that this change is going to happen for the reason that I mentioned.

      • Aoshi00

Elza is a unisex name though right, like Shannon or Ashley?  I’ve always liked those names like Vagrant Story’s Ashley Riot, but in modern times people would make fun of a guy named Ashley.. I looked up Elza and it says it was more common as a boy’s name prior to 1880 (apparently there’s a US politician called Elza Jeffords around that time)… and Last Story is medieval.. I remember people didn’t like Seth’s name in Lost Odyssey either, but her name didn’t get changed, so I’m a bit surprised they changed his name.. Maybe Ende from Pandora’s Tower would be called something else too?

I guess Calista is a bit similar to Kanan, but makes me think of Ally
McBeal :)  And they pulled a Lucas w/ Elza’s name too *.* ZaEl just sounds
kinda funky, like Nick Cage naming his son after Superman..   Did they change Shulk’s name in Xenoblade Chronicles?

I like the British dub too, but would be hard to get used to the new names.. as long as it blends in w/ the dub I guess..

        • kylehyde

Well I found that in many european countries actually is considered as a variant from Eliza. Anyway I don’t think that the reason of why the character is called Elza has something to do with mediaval settings and more that the developers thought that the name sounds exotic (and certainly the first time that I saw the character’s name I thought that it was exotic too, but for very different reasons) and they liked.

On the Kanan/Calista I agree with you 100%, but more than remember the character itself I remember this

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, I know the reason they picked the name Elza was most likely due to  it sounding exotic.  I just meant it might not have always been strictly a female name like everyone said (like “Oh, Sakaguchi picked a girl’s name”), perhaps in modern times it’s more common as a female name like Ashley. But it’s actually a unisex name, and started becoming less popular as a boy’s name and not used anymore after 1930′s, like Ashley Wilkes in Gone w/ the Wind.. And since Last Story isn’t modern, the name Elza should’ve been perfectly fine in the game’s context..  Actually it made me think of the ship Elsa in Xenosaga :) Personally I really like the boy name Emile (like Nier) even though it sounds a bit feminine..

lol.. Calista is not a bad name, but it just reminds me of Calista Flockhart or Newt Gingrich’s 3rd wife :)

The thing that I find funny though is they don’t think Elza works and just flip the name around to Za-el, instead of giving him another name.. I dunno if Zael is a common name or it’s just a coincidence..  Just thought Shulk needed more of a name change and I was surprised the names are changed for the whole cast in Last Story.

At any rate, I hope this would be released in the US eventually since Last Story was one of my fav. games like Lost Odyssey.. and I can’t play EU games..

        • PrinceHeir

wow thanks for the info about the unisex names like Ashleyand Elza.

actually the plan on changing the names on Pandora’s Tower too :(

          http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/games/wii/pandoras_tower_45558.html

“as you assume the role of Aeron,” it was supposed to be Ende right???

you actually brought up alot of interesting topics about the names and it’s meaning.

never thought about the Unisex names to be honest ^^

          • Aoshi00

nah, I just brought it up since everyone kept saying it’s a girl’s name and why it had to be changed, but that’s not the case.. if so, why didn’t they change Ashley’s name in Vagrant Story.  Elza’s just not a common name in the last century though.  I think unisex names are the coolest.

            http://pregnancy.about.com/od/readyforbaby/a/unisexnames.htm

They did *.*?  So it’s Aeron and Elena instead of Ende and Ceres huh?  That’s too bad, I thought those names were so unique and I thought Ceres really fit..  I really need to get back to Xenoblade and Pandora’s Tower, I’m so behind *.*.. So they changed Elza and Ende, but not Shulk?

          • PrinceHeir

            time’s change i guess XD

and yeah i was surprised with the name Ashley to be honest O____O

though im glad they didn’t change it!!!

i think Aeon would have been cool instead of Aeron. though i prefer the original voice just to stick with the original.

it’s the same thing happened to End of Eternity(Resonance of Fate)

            Reanbell(リーンベル Rīnberu?)- Leanne

i think Reanbell sounded much nicer than Leanne :P

          • Aoshi00

Aeon would sound like X’s summoned beasts/eidolon lol :) I don’t like Aeron so much, sounds like Aaron.. Ende and Ceres both sound so mysterious, now it’s Elena.. Hey, it’s Noto Mamiko, so can’t be beat :)

I also prefer Reanbell, so unique and cute, compared to plain Leanne :)

If they’re really out to change every name that they think is weird, Shulk from Xenoblade was the first one that’s gotta go.. Frankly I’m a bit surprised by the name overhaul in these games.. it’s not like Phoenix Wright or Inazuma Eleven w/ Jpn names/puns that need complete name localization.. some new names in Last Story sound cool I guess..

W/ unisex names, they always gravitate toward one gender or the other at different times in history..

      • RaikageV

Probably you are right, but isn’t the name pronounced “Erza”? (with a r) I know L and R are pretty close in Japanese and I know the name is written with an L, but I believe they pronounced it with a R. So they could’ve just change it to Erza or Ersa.
Though I don’t have a problem with Zael, its just a total different name.

    • PrinceHeir

such a shame it happened :(

i wonder if they’ll change it to the the US version(if it get’s released)

Still DAY FREAKING 1 for me though!!!!!!

  • Raiu

I’m excited to see what outfits they can wear… ^_^

  • Happy Gamer

Man i can’t wait for mthis to come over! It’s prob the most exicted for RPG this gen for me ^_^

  • roboattack

Love how they renamed the character’s name, Elza to Zael, just by reshuffling the letters. Respect.

  • RaikageV

Hey, that’s Ganondorf in one of the screens :D

  • Solomon_Kano

I wonder why they changed his name to Zael? I like both, but I’ve gotta wonder why they did it.

    • Aoshi00

A lot of people seem to have complained about it being a “girl’s name”.. but apparently Elza is a unisex name just like Shannon, Ashley, etc.. Ashely Riot got to keep his in Vagrant Story (does his name conjure up the image of the Olsen twins :)?, I’m actually surprised by this change as well..  Unisex names tend to sway toward one gender or the other thruout different times, like Reese is now more popular for girls..

      http://www.babynametrain.com/meanings/boy/elza/

I mean usually names are changed when they either don’t make sense, like the original Jpn names for Phoenix Wright or Inazuma Eleven wouldn’t have any secondary meaning to the Western audience.. or they sound silly like “Shulk” in Xenobalde, and I don’t even think his name was changed?

Zael sounds kinda funny to me, but overall the name changes are pretty cool.. I really wish they left Elza stay as it is though.. now it’s Master Zael and Lady Calista Flockhart lol..

  • wahyudil

What kind of name Zael is??? Like demon name or something …
