Resident Evil For Game Boy Color Is Online And Waiting For You To Download ItThe fundraiser on Assembler Games was a success and the unreleased Resident Evil Game Boy builds are now available for everyone to download.

While reportedly 90% complete, this Resident Evil game was ultimately canned by Capcom due to quality issues. Two builds of Resident Evil are online for everyone to play. Check them out and judge for yourself, but don’t expect to complete the game or see much variety between stages.

Thanks to everyone who sent this news in!

Wow. RE fans really must like their games. I hope everyone who took part in funding this will get their money’s worth.

    • d19xx

It’s not much about worth but the sheer novelty of it.

hope my computer can run it….

Do you have at least Nvidia GTX580?
Otherwise, there will definitely be frame rate issue
I suggest you should go to your control panel and turn off extra feature such as anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering in order to gain a few extra frame rate
I also suggest having at least an i7 processor, otherwise, the loading section will definitely crash your system
having at least Dual Channel 1866MHz 32gb of ram also help, somewhat
AND Don’t even FOOLISHLY try to run this DEVIL in 1080p (got my gt555m fried due to my stupid arrogance T_T )

I was stupid, so i tried playing it in 3D, but my retinas got burned due to the intense graphics

I downloaded it already, haven’t got around to play it yet.

This is a piece of videogame history right there :)

Why do you think so? This game was never officially released, so it’s not like Capcom holds the rights over these roms. It was an unfinished project. Actually, Capcom is aware of this, and yet the only thing they said was that they are not responsible nor they support this.

Would Siliconera tell their readers to download this if it were illegal in the least? Neither would I download this if it was illegal.

      • http://profiles.google.com/zferolie A.J. Ferolie

It’s still illegal you know. Capcom spent money making this, and still holds copyright on the name and stuff. I’m surprised Capcom isn’t going after this guy.

        • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

How can you prove Capcom has the rights over this? One could claim they have the rights over the Resident Evil intellectual property yes, but being an unfinished project they chose not to sign their name on (the game was unreleased because Capcom claimed this didn’t met the quality standards they expected for it to achieve, and was trashed.

Off course, you can very well claim I am talking out of my out of my arse here.  I have absolutely nothing to prove what I’m saying here, but I’m pretty sure the intelectual property and trademarking processes come after the game is fully finished.

So, in a way, claiming this is illegal is as a speculative claim as claiming it isn’t; one could say we’re both wrong, until factual proof is shown :p

EDIT: Let me get this out of the way, because I don’t want to sound like I’m justifying piracy or any illicit acts that hurt the gaming industry: I am all against piracy, I think people who defend piracy are delusional, so my arguments were not used to stand for/defend piracy in any way or form.

Someone still owns rights to the material, which is why leaks remain rare and why the copyright holder can threaten to sue if they really want to (i.e. Epic Games and Unreal PSX. People trying to revive the cancelled PlayStation maps met resistance because ex-developers who previously agreed to cooperate suddenly backed out).

Case in point would be Fallout. While Interplay killed the Van Buren project, they retained rights to the work (didn’t stop an ex-employee from leaking a prototype though) and eventually sold it to Bethesda. Some of the story content was later reused in Fallout: New Vegas. Around the same time, select content from the cancelled Baldur’s Gate III project was sold to Obsidian Entertainment.

Another example would be the Shadow Warrior expansion pack, Wanton Destruction. It was killed but resurfaced nearly a decade later when the ex-president of the development studio came across a copy. He arranged a freeware release with 3D Realms, who still co-owned the rights.

As for illicit behavior, this is a case where people are bending the rules to preserve history.

Thanks for your insight, but I’d still like to see some factual proof, I don’t believe Siliconera would risk advertising something like this if they couldn’t do it, that’s the way I see it at least :)

I actually do work in the software industry and I know a good bit about copyright law…

Anyway, the basics of copyright are that SOMEONE has the rights in intellectual property, just by virtue of creating it.  No need to file anything, go through any formal process/registration, etc.  It would be absolutely shocking if any major video game developer didn’t insist it own all rights in the works created by its employees as a condition of employment.  Therefore, it’s a very safe assumption that Capcom has a copyright in this software.

Now, don’t think I’m saying this release is a bad thing or that people downloading are somehow ethically wrong.  Capcom doesn’t seem to care in this case anyway.  But if they really decided they wanted to enforce their rights, it’s perfectly within their rights as the copyright holder to do so.

          • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Alrighty, thanks for your input, I’ll take your word for it because you’re in a better position to know all of that since you work inside the industry, I’m but a mere observer.

      • neo_firenze

Whether it was officially released is irrelevant.  Copyright belongs to the creator as soon as the work is created, no need to file for it, release the work, or anything else.

However, if the copyright holder doesn’t mind it being distributed, it’s not illegal.  But if Capcom changed their mind and decided they wanted to stop this distribution, it would be perfectly within their rights to do so.

        • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

How can you prove that Capcom holds the rights for this particular project, tho? That is all I’m claiming. Off course it still holds the Resident Evil name on it, but the moment Capcom denied continuity for this project, they denied this game.

Not only that but it could be a timed intellectual property register, that simply expired after a while. We won’t know for sure until we’re shown factual proof, and until that, my claim is that we can’t say for sure this is illegal or not.

I ain’t no lawyer tho so like I said in the other comment, you can very well claiming I am talking out of my behind here, but at least I think I’m right :P

EDIT: Let me get this out of the way, because I don’t want to sound like I’m justifying piracy or any illicit acts that hurt the gaming industry: I am all against piracy, I think people who defend piracy are delusional, so my arguments were not used to stand for/defend piracy in any way or form.

  • Belphybear

I’m glad it’s finally out. I just hope Resi 1.5, the Saturn build of Shenmue and a lot of other beta/unreleased games get their turn soon.

If this was a Squeenix incomplete project, Squeenix would’ve sent cease and desist letters to everyone and demanded all the money raised to release a rom of that project on top of it.

I’m just going by Squeenix’s actions to the Chrono series fan community when I say that. Chrono series fans creating fan sequels of the game, Squeenix tries to whore out the Chrono series name by pushing out a cheap and lazy port on the Nintendo DS, sales of the DS part aren’t as insane as Squeenix wants, Squeenix coincidentally decides months later to send cease and desist letters to every single fan sequel.

I won’t reply to messages on this post of mine because based on past experience, I think doing so could sidetrack the article’s main subject matter, Resident Evil. It’s just something I thought of in seeing that Capcom didn’t try to prevent this rom from seeing the light of day.

    • CKSqua

Square Enix never stopped the release of the FF2 English ROM (FC version) or the myriad of fan-made Final Fantasy games out there.

I’m not sure why Chrono has been singled out by SE, but over in Japan, Nintendo and Konami (even Japanese citizens are prevented from releasing doujin games based on their franchises, which is rare) are easily the most restrictive when it comes to derivative works.

    • Solomon_Kano

Except by talking about Square Enix at all here, you’ve already brought an unrelated topic into the discussion.

We get that you hate Squenix, cool, but save that for elsewhere man.

  • Slapndabass

I’m going to be all over this like white on rice :)

  • Rich

The fact that he had to spend several thousand dollars in order to get the cartridge in the first place, and yet only asked $2000 in return for a cartridge that’s now worth only a fraction of it’s original price makes me hopeful for the future of ‘unreleased game hunters’.

  • Natat

I’m sure this will be more scary than RE5 at least…

  • SirRichard

The fact that this wasn’t released due to quality issues but Resident Evil Gaiden was seen as being fit for the market amuses me to no end.

Gonna download it now, it’s always interesting to see what might have been.

  • Apache_Chief

I just don’t like how the terms “fundraiser” and “donation” were thrown around so much during this thing. A polite word would be “price”, an accurate word would be “ransom”.

  • RupanIII

lol I guess he’s on his way to the French Riviera to spend everyone’s money by now, before plotting his next move to rob a children’s hospital, right guys? :P

    WAIT, DON’T OPEN THAT DOOR!!!

  • Solomon_Kano

People actually ponied up for this? Huh. Ah well, cool for the RE fans that get to experience it without having paid anything now lol.

  • Yu_TheKing

I wonder how much people would spend on unreleased MML3 content…
