Kid Icarus: Uprising Comes With Six AR Cards

By Spencer . February 7, 2012 . 2:15pm

First revealed at E3, Kid Icarus: Uprising uses the 3DS’ camera for augmented reality. The game reads special cards and when you place two next to each other characters pop out and fight.

I was surprised that Pit was pretty weak during the hands on AR card demo at E3. Every main character even Palutena defeated Pit in battle. Kid Icarus: Uprising includes six random AR cards when the game ships on March 22 in Japan.

This makes me think of yu-gi-oh now…XD

I must say, while it’s cool to see the characters in AR, I don’t really get the point of this. Also, is there more than one version of the same character? Because I’m pretty sure I saw Pit beating Medusa once…

At worst AR cards are more of a novelty, a little something extra for the players to mess around with. It’s really not needed or anything you are totally right but for what it’s worth it can be fun to play with for awhile at least. I guess it’s just something to show off the technical features of the 3DS more then anything.

But there are some good AR cards being used out there by some developers. It is actually really awesome because they are pretty much the same as mini-games. They can be really fun to play and well who doesn’t like getting mini-games included on top of their games? When the AR cards give you some games to play I’m pretty happy. As it stands now the AR capabilties on the 3DS are pretty niffty and can make for some cool games concepts like this one:

Let’s just hope to see it used more often and of course be done well. Oh as a note for future reference in case you don’t know you can edit your comments as much as you want. You don’t need to reply and write corrections. Just hit the edit button it’s right next to reply (it’s where the like button is for others’ comments).

Oh, I’m not against the concept of AR games in general and there are definitely some really interesting things you can do with. It’s just its use in this particular game feels so incredibly pointless to me (and I’m interested in the game itself), I just don’t get it.

Is there an edit button on the mobile site? Because I remember looking for it and not finding it, so I figured there was none- if there is then I don’t know how I didn’t see it…
Also, while we’re on the topic, is there a way to delete comments?

Hhmm I’m not too familiar with the mobile site actually. I foolishly just assumed most looked at the site via computers and didn’t even remember about mobile phones and what not when I wrote that. lol There is a way to delete your comments on disqus but unfortunately it never truly deletes your comment. It just changes it to a “guest” comment and is still there on the article.

Yeah I agree this AR is nothing more then a simple little novelty that’ll probably be forgotten about 5 minutes later. lol Hopefully the cards look cool though.

I think in this case the idea is for you to fight with your friends as the article mentions you get six random cards. It’s sort of a social mini game where you can go and see other people and battle your cards against theirs. I’m actually not surprised that Nintendo tried to make this into a social event. Games that have a social aspect seem to do dominating in Japan right now.

          • PhPhill

See, but the thing that really stands out to me is that the card battles are pre-established, right? The battles will always have the same result and, if you only have six cards (obviously they might be planning on selling extra cards, but that doesn’t sound like a good idea either), then there can only be so much depth to this thing. Anyway, I kind of get the idea, but I don’t really see this taking off with anyone, even in Japan. (Then again, there might be more to it than I realize and the world is filled with all sorts of people so… who knows?)

That’s true, but I think they are going for the surprise factor. You won’t know if your card is stronger until you try. That could easily make people interested enough to try with their friends. I certainly would, just to see who has the best card. Perhaps I’m odd/easily amused? Booster packs would certainly extend the appeal.
