Star Trek Video Game Slated For Q1 2013 With Namco Bandai As A Co PublisherThe Darkness II developer Digital Extremes is working on a Star Trek video game based on the 2009 reboot. Star Trek is a co-op third person shooter that follows Captain Kirk and Spock as they work together to stop an alien race from conquering the galaxy. The video game will have an original story written by God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk.

Star Trek is slated for release in Q1 2013 and Namco Bandai is tied to the video game as a co-publisher. “Working with Paramount Pictures and Digital Extremes reinforces Namco Bandai Games’ commitment of expanding its portfolio to include Triple ‘A’ Western developed games in addition to its popular and well-respected Japanese Franchises,” said Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing. “Digital Extremes’ attention to detail, and the collaboration with Paramount Pictures and the team at Bad Robot Interactive will create an authenticity that is sure to thrill Star Trek fans and gamers alike.”

I’ve never been a Star Trek fan (my dad used to make me watch it as a kid and it was boring as hell), can’t stand “Trekkies”, but this game looks cool and the movie actually was not that bad.

  • 27CansOfTuna

I hope they get all the VA’s of the movie franchise, if I recall the next one is 2013? But day one for sure, hopefully the developers implement competent AI.

  • Ladius

The reboot almost killed Star Trek for me, so I’m not overly interested :

Also, I hope this isn’t another western flop for Namco, it would be sad to see them lose the money they are making with successful Japanese games on another not-so-well thought western game. Then again, we don’t know anything about it yet and it’s unfair to judge.

  • Suicunesol

My dad is a real trekkie, and I used to have to watch Star Trek all the time. And I don’t mean Captain Picard and such. I’m talking the vintage stuff with Spock and McCoy.

I don’t dislike it (because I grew up on it), but I know most people nowadays do not have the patience to watch a sci-fi that doesn’t have gunz blazing every minute.

With that said, I wish they didn’t have to turn it into a shooter. Star Trek is fundamentally about the exploration of new worlds, but creating a plot revolving around war (again) does not illustrate that and really doesn’t help make the game stand out. If it were me, I’d make it a shooter-hybrid ship management exploration game with quests and the whole nine yards.

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it would be nice if the game had a more exploration-friendly slant. I didn’t care for the original show (not because I didn’t have the patience though, it just didn’t do anything for me after having come up watching TNG), but that’s an element almost as essential to Star Trek as lightsabers are to Star Wars.

The shooter crowd is really hard to make a name in these days, so it’s a bit weird that they’d design a scenario that would allow the franchise to fit that genre as opposed to something more… “natural” for it. Ah well. I’d love a game that let you explore the Enterprise, space, planets, etc. but, having enjoyed the reboot, I’ll take this.

    • Evan Groman

I definitely agree that Star Trek is fundamentally about exploration and I was heavily disappointed seeing the game categorized as a shooter as well.

BUT, one thing. I don’t think “most people nowadays do not have the patience to watch a sci-fi that doesn’t have gunz blazing every minute.”
It’s not related to the guns blazing or constant war or action or whatever. (The original) Star Trek is just very badly produced and acted in comparison to today’s standards, it’s just hard to enjoy as much. If they made a new series that was high quality and entirely about exploration and had very little “action” or “gunz blazing,” it would probably still be really good. It’s just the outdated production that turns people off, I think.

I actually thought the remake’s acting and production made it better, although it’s debatable whether some directions they took with it were right.

I sort of agree, but I also think the show’s greatest strength was in its character interactions and dialogue. So personally, I’d love to see a full-on Trek RPG! Something with team-based combat and lots of choices that determine the ending, aww yeah.

  • hush404

I’m rather looking forward to this title… too bad it’s so damn far away! I expected it to be some time this year to be honest. Not something closer to late spring/early summer of 2013…… AHHHHHHHH SO THAT’S IT!

They’re lining up to release it just in time for the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie to hit theaters (in May of 2013) …. sly move.

  • Solomon_Kano

I greatly enjoyed the reboot and The Darkness II’s demo, so I’m all for this. I never could understand how the old fans let a different take ruin something for them*, but to each their own.

*Though perhaps that’s because I didn’t care much for the original show. I certainly didn’t dislike it, but it never really gripped me. Picard>>>

Thats why i always said that people are pathetic. They will always complain if one game is always following one formula(Mario)

However they will also hate if the game changes from the old ones.

SO THAT WHAT THE HELL DOES THE GAMER WANT???

      • Evan Groman

Your failure is in understanding that “the gamer” is not one person, therefore it does not have a set opinion.
A bunch of gamers want a certain series to keep its formula, and a bunch of other gamers want it to change it. In fact, plenty of gamers have a “DONT CHANGE” opinion on certain games and “DEFINITELY CHANGE” on others. There is no decided ‘change is better’ or ‘change isn’t better’ opinion for “the gamer” because the gamer ISN’T A PERSON.

        • theworldofnoboundries

I understand what u mean but….. i am saying people there not a single person.

One group will want a change while others will not wanted a change. It is more into personal preferences however the “community” nowadays is just different.

It is not like how in the past, we gamer will try to appreciate a game except if the game is just pure bad.

But nowadays even if the game is good, people will always try to find a reason to say how the game is bad.(Bad graphics, Not innovative enough, Bad story, Too much milking for the franchise, different game mechanics to the previous series of the game, not competitive enough, no online.)

Isn’t it people play game for fun? Or in this era people don’t care about the fun anymore?

  • RupanIII

I guess I’m in the minority here. I like the original series best (discovered it through reruns on cable) and couldn’t get into the reboot.

  • Göran Isacson

I’d be more worried if there hadn’t been shooters set in the Star Trek universe before that managed to work-Star Trek: Honor Guard was a middling to decent FPS, and Star Trek Voyager Elite Force was pretty darn good! So an FPS in the Trek-verse can work, you just have to have talented people like Raven Software at the helm.
