Tales Of Candy Hearts Or Happy Valentines Day To Tales Fans

By Spencer . February 14, 2012 . 6:04am

Namco Bandai sent press a little Valentine’s Day treat along with copies of Tales of the Abyss. These candy hearts have names of different Abyss alumni like Tear, Guy, and Jade.

No Luke, though. Poor Luke all alone for Valentine’s Day. Will anyone take him out of the video game aisle?

Luke was annoying, he doesn’t deserve his own candy. One of very few JRPG characters that I can honestly say bothered me. Nearly made me quit the game to be honest.

He wasn’t supposed to be a likable character for the longest time, but they did too good of a job on that one. I ended up disliking him for the rest of the game.

    • MrRobbyM

I agree. If the game wasn’t so interesting I would have given up. But to be fair, most JRPGs have annoying characters.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mpureka Mike Pureka

Curiously, Luke didn’t annoy me post-event at all.

I felt his reactions were amoung the more honest and believable of the various RPG character I’ve encountered over the past few years.  It all just made sense to me.

Actually, Abyss overall seemed more grounded in terms of the characters acting like real people than most games.

      • http://www.ukanime.com abigsmurf

I always thought that the way most of the cast treated him afterwards (for pretty much the rest of the game) was pretty harsh. It was their constant criticism that drove him to it and he believed pretty much the only guy he looked up to when he told him he was doing good.
The people who were hardest on him all did worse things (and did them knowingly) too.

        • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

I agree, especially with that one event that drove Luke over and decided to change himself. Granted he was foolish during that event, but given that the only guy he looked up too and such did that to him, and THEN the gall his friends said to him was completely unforgivable! They didn’t give him a chance to explain and he was lost himself!

I can understand them being angry with his decisions, but they overreacted and overcriticism the guy! I would be very disappoint in Luke, but not like what they did. If I was there I would’ve told THEM off and consent with Luke to help him calm down and explain things clearly and then remark (in a very less harsh way) about his actions.

Would REAL people act like that?

          • RaikageV

I suppose they would, not all but some would for sure.

          • Mr_SP

Frankly, yes. When something like that happens, many people are quick to blame whoever they can. Worse yet, Luke was being hysterical, more concerned with saying that it wasn’t him, rather than accepting his part in it and explaining what happened, which likely would have gotten him off much quicker. It’s that response that polarises them against him – that he’s in shock and barely understands what happened himself never seems to cross their minds, which is especially bad from Jade, who should know better from experience.

          • PoweredByHentai

And you know what?  Guy agrees with you.

He told Asch and Natasha to F- off, especially after Asch dropped the bomb about the relationship between Asch and Luke.

Quite honestly, I would tell people off. I’ve gotten into plenty of troubles and fisticuffs because of that but I’ve always considered it a matter of principle to do the right thing and protect the weak.

        • JustThisOne

True. But two wrong’s don’t make a right. No one has a clean plate, and that shouldn’t stop people from calling out Luke’s mistakes. When people do wrong things, there was always a reason behind it. Luke didn’t really have one. Considering the gravity of “the event”, it made him seem very thoughtless.

Of course, his personality did take a turn. And even then, I thought the cast treated him properly. Luke desperately wanted to redeem himself, and everyone just wanted him to know that you can never really fix everything. In their own way.

Anyway, Luke was a very well built character, but kinda annoying. He’s supposed to be. He’s a snapshot of growing up and learning how to deal with life – which is kind of annoying in real life, as well.

    I’ll hang out with Luke for Valentine’s Day! I don’t have anyone either too… ;_;
It’s Bro’s day with us! XD

Anyway I didn’t like Luke at first but after that “incident” I’ve grown to like him but this low self-esteem issues did get tiresome and I wish he had more confidence in himself… I which the developers didn’t make him so, depressed after that.

He would’ve been a more likable fellow if he acted silly like he was at first, but still the nice guy after the incident, and finally gain a better opinion of himself and work to living the rest of his life with his friends.

  • Spirit Macardi

Hell yeah I’d hang with Luke for Valentine’s day. After all, he shares a voice with Simon the digger!

He’d have to bring Mieu along too though, because Mieu is freakin’ adorable.

  • 27CansOfTuna

Hopefully I can…if gamestop has it in stock when I go in a few hours.

  • http://www.cubiz.co.cc/ Chris Thomas

If GS has it I will. My dirty GS seems to never get games on time.

  • JustThisOne

No! >:I No one wants to hang out with a stupid dreckplica.

Dammit, the one time I don’t pre-order a game, it has to come with a surprise :C

I was planning on picking this up next paycheck, but I really wish I had pre-ordered.

    • Spirit Macardi

Don’t worry, it’s not a pre-order bonus. These candies were only given to the gaming press.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

North American tales of fans, get this game as soon as you can. It sold out EVERYWHERE in Europe.

    • AuraGuyChris

Completely justified in that the game never hit Europe in its PS2 incarnation. I fear your statement isn’t going to be quite the same for us Americans.

      • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

It was a bigger problem for us mostly because Namco Bandai didn’t ship enough copies to retailers. Rumour has it not even the press got their review copies of the game, and that is why only a small handful of official reviews for this game have been made public, from europe magazines and/or websites.

So it had mostly to do with shipping issues. I’m guessing NB simply didn’t think the game would sell at all, and well…turns out they’re actually loosing a chance for a bigger profit here.

      • Ladius

The issue is different, sadly: TotA is the rarest game on 3DS in Europe right now, and most retailers weren’t even able to meet their preorders. The game was out of stock less than a week after release, and it has been sold at absurd prices on Ebay.

The USA seems to be in the same situation, considering BestBuy is already out of stock and there are some reports of people unable to pick up their copies because Gamestop didn’t receive the shipments they expected.

  • cjeromek

I’ll hang out with Luke today! My copy should be arriving in a few moments. I’ve been dreaming of playing Tales of the Abyss again and now I’m finally going to get the chance to.

  • SirTeffy

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! I get why Luke doesn’t have his name on any of the hearts… it’s a spoiler though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jazzlyn.lim Jazlynn Lim

      Ready your scissors, soldier!

  • riceisnice

I just love little things like this.

  • Exkaiser

I didn’t pick it up, myself, but a friend who did told me that the loading times have been completely squashed in this version, along with the world map lag.

Brilliant. Kind of tempting me to get it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Ruiz/100000640263916 Christopher Ruiz

I went to go pick up my pre-ordered copy of it today from my local BestBuy, but they didn’t have it. I was told that it was on backorder because of a problem with the manufacturer. So, I’m now wondering if I’m even going to get my copy at all. :(

    • darkfox1

Yep the same happened to me so I just got mines at gamestop instead. I wonder whats going on?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B4YEJDTXAVKEP4V3R4EX2B4IFE DavideC

I can’t see the Natalia’s candy hearts there, neither Ion and the rest of the Six God Generals.

If there aren’t,Luke isn’t alone then.

  • Solomon_Kano

Would that I had a 3DS I’d get this, alas I do not. So a few months down the line when I get one, I’ll be sure to pick this up. In the meanwhile, I’ll be grabbing Graces ASAP Namco!

    • Ladius

If you are interested to play TotA 3DS in the future I suggest considering buying it right now: apparently it’s suffering the same issues the European version had, with an extremely small shipment, retailers unable to meet their preorders and first-day out of stock stores.

In Europe TotA 3DS is already the rarest game on that platform, and even after a reprint (exhausted in a single day!) it’s available almost only from Ebay sellers with inflated prices :

      • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

I bought my TotA 3DS today, my Gamestop only had four copies of it and they were all behind the counter. I had to ask the lady at the desk for it. So yes I second this comment, if any of you guys want it I urge you to get it now before it’s too late.

      • Solomon_Kano

Eh. I figured the same may happen to Graces which is why I prioritized it. I’d rather let somebody who’s actually going to play it have it than get it with no idea of when I’ll get my hands on a 3DS to play.

I’m undecided as to whether or not I should be happy that they’re experiencing stock issues though. On the one hand that sucks for those who were slow on getting it but, on the other, that -should- bode well for Namco’s assessment of US players’ interest in the series.

  • darkfox1

Boy was it a hassle to get this game today.

    • http://twitter.com/NeverUnplaying Sonny Oliveira

I work at a GameStop and since we’re the only ones carrying it today (Walmart/Target doesn’t carry JRPG’s outside big ones and apparently no Best Buy locally have them), we’ve been scarce outside preorders. The company has been hesitant on buying extras copies of 3DS games because I believe they have little faith on the third-parties on the platform. We sold out of Resident Evil in no time last week with no replenishments ’til Friday and have little extras with Tekken and Mario & Sonic today as well (like 2 copies). Abyss sold out here and I believe Metal Gear will next week as well. I hate to sound like a commercial to the company, but I do recommend preordering 3DS and Vita games (Vita’s even worse, 1 copy + preorders).

      • Ladius

I imagine Vita niche games will have a tough time at retail, at least for the first year.

      • darkfox1

I actually manged to get it at Gamestop yesterday. Like you said I went to BestBuy and the shipments had back-ordered. I also went to Target and they said they didn’t receive the game at all… You know your stuff man I didn’t even know some stores don’t sell certain games because of how niche they are.

  • http://twitter.com/sakurairomemori Alphabet Soup

Really woulda liked a pre-order bonus for Abyss, but I’m glad to have a portable version of the game.  Although that candy is awesome!

    • Ladius

The preorder bonus seems to be getting the game itself, apparently it’s already sold out in many regions and some retailers haven’t been able to cover all their preorders.

      • http://twitter.com/sakurairomemori Alphabet Soup

        Haha, good point!

  • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

I got my copy today, also pre-ordered Tales of Graces F and Kid Icarus: Uprising while I was at GameStop. Figured I my as well plus I wanted those bonuses too, as tiny as they may be. lol I also ended up picking up both seasons of Gundam 00 today so I’m pretty broke now. lol But it was totally worth it!

  • http://twitter.com/Kyogissun Philip Irwin

Good god all these pre-order horror stories, sounds like I was lucky getting to pick it up first thing this morning.

Worth noting, I saw the cabinet as the gamestop clerk was getting my copy out… It appeared my pre-order was one of FIVE copies they had.

Maybe Bamco’s testing the waters to see how to handle future releases for the series?  There’s clearly demand for it, but it’s a question of what intensity.

  • http://twitter.com/Kyogissun Philip Irwin

As in, testing how many copies they need to ship out or something.

Also, pardon my french but **** you nintendo for giving the 3DS a god awful max volume level, I should be able to blast the instrumental version of Karma everytime I watch the OP, but noooooooo, CAN’T LET ME DO THAT, HUH?  GOTTA THINK OF THE KIDDIES AND THEIR PRECIOUS EAR DRUMS.

    >yes, I mad over something very silly
