House Of The Dead 4′s PlayStation 3 Conversion Took Almost A Year To Complete

House Of The Dead 4s PlayStation 3 Conversion Took Almost A Year To CompleteThe House of the Dead 4 is finally coming home this spring thanks to a PlayStation 3 port. Sega built the arcade game on the Lindbergh arcade board, the same hardware Virtua Fighter 5 runs on, which was designed to make PS3 conversions easier. However, it still took almost a year to adapt The House of the Dead 4.

"It took almost a year to adapt The House of the Dead 4 for the console, from the initial game design to the product," a Sega representative explained in an e-mail to Siliconera. "The main obstacles in converting The House of the Dead 4 from the Lindbergh board to the PS3 were the OpenGL and the data format conversion.  Also, the PS3 has only 256MB of RAM while the Lindbergh board has 1GB, making the conversion challenging."

The House of the Dead III with PlayStation Move support is available as a PSN download now with time attack, leaderboards, trophies and a Home Reward to unlock.  "We did more than simply upscale the resolution to 720p. We brought the game render buffer up to 720p as well," Sega tells us. "This makes the graphic quality and resolution far superior to all of the previous versions. In addition, we have re-made almost all of the UIs [user interface] in HD resolution."

Arcade memory is always oversized anyway. I remember when Sega managed to put Outrun 2 on the Xbox, going from 512MB to 64MB and adding 480p in the meantime. I don’t know how they could have done that unless the original game was either very inefficient or didn’t use much of the full available memory.

A reason why arcade games requires large amount of memory is due to caching or preloading all necessary game data as much as possible from the start.

This is why you don’t see any loading screens in arcade games.

I haven’t played one of these games in ages. Man, if I had a Move I’d definitely get this.

    • BOSSFIGHT

You don’t really need the Move to play any of the PS3 House Of The Dead Games. I have a move but I like playing Overkill and HOTD 3 with the dual shock because it reminds me of playing House Of The Dead 2 on dreamcast.

      • Solomon_Kano

Oh? Cool. I’d probably still want to play it with Move though. I always played those games in the arcade cabinets, but if I don’t need Move then I’ll go on and get it anyway.

which is better for ps3, overkill or III?

Overkill is more “feature-rich” than the simple arcade port that is 3. I say go with Overkill as it’s great fun ride full of hilarity, even if the action-part is pretty standard and easy.

It should be noted that III is like 8 dollars, though.

I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for the Lindbergh to see its games ported. They should have been working on these ports much much earlier. I will definitely buy HotD4, but it would have been a lot cooler quite a few years ago.

…. Man I am so out of the loop because this is the first time I’ve even HEARD of the game. Didn’t even know they still made these, save for Overkill.
