Final Fantasy XIII-2 X Mass Effect Collaboration In The Works

By Spencer . February 20, 2012 . 12:28pm

Final Fantasy XIII 2 X Mass Effect Collaboration In The WorksSquare Enix made a deal with Ubisoft to add an Assassin’s Creed costume to Final Fantasy XIII-2 for the time-traveling hero Noel Kriess. Players will be able to dress Noel up in a costume based on Ezio Auditore in the future.

Mass Effect will have a similar collaboration, a source tells Siliconera, with a specially designed Mass Effect costume made for Final Fantasy XIII-2. Square and Electronic Arts working together? Don’t look so surprised, remember Square Electronic Arts LLC?

We’ll add this to the growing Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC wardrobe, which also includes an AKB-48 designed outfit, Beachwear for Searah, and Spacetime Guardian armor for Noel.

Now those westerners will have to buy it!

    • mikedo2007

and maybe the Japanese will start to appreciate Mass Effect 3, since the 2nd game bombed (even the PS3 version didn’t sell well).

      • Testsubject909

        doubtful.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

SQUEEE! I JUST heard about this and I’m excited. I hate the the idea of paying for DLC costumes, but I’d totally buy a Tali outfit for Serah.

Something that’d make Noel look like a Krogan’d be worth the money too.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

       Tali? Mmmm Yummy.

It’s best fitting for Sarah since Tali’s the only innocent crew member on the Normandy (aside from that girl that very much loves everything).

  • Raiu

FF13-2 is collaborating with Mass Effect, which has been inspired by FF when the first ME game came out, on costumes? I’m surprised…

I’m not a fan of Mass Effect but in this case, I rather play ME3 than FF13-2… At least ME2 got me finish the game unlike FF13, I stopped halfway…

    • Testsubject909

I’d rather a new RPG by Tri-Ace personally.

A third Valkyrie Profile, a second Resonance of Fate, a fifth Star Ocean.
      But that’s me.

      • Raiu

Valkyrie Profile? Ha, good memories… I remember playing the first Valkyrie Profile on the ps1… You almost made me want to go back playing that again…

Never played Resonance of Fate… so i can’t say anything…

A new Star Ocean is good too..

Speaking of Tri-Ace, there hasn’t been any news from them.. What are they doing right now?

        • theworldofnoboundries

They have been making Frontier gate on PSP and Beyond the Labyrinth on 3DS. Both of the game is released by Konami.

        • Prinnydoom

Probably sitting on their asses thinking of a new game. Hopefully.

      • Prinnydoom

All three of those i would buy. New star ocean would be awesome. Third valkyrie profile would be good too. What a mess covenant of the plume was.

  • ShadowWolf

Shepard: i’m commander Shepard and………wait what?

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

Noel: …and this is my favorite store on Academia.

  • ShadowWolf

why are people hating on Mass Effect?

    cause it ain’t a JRPG?

cause really, i enjoy RPGs from the West and Japan.

they are both good for different reasons.

    • Testsubject909

      That might be why.

They want specifically different flavors, and when an exotic flavor decides to attempt desperately to appeal to it’s perceived conception of what they believe is enjoyed in another country, well… It taints the result and makes the product lose it’s identity.

It hasn’t exactly happened yet to Final Fantasy (although the taste has altered quite a bit in recent ages). But with various other companies creating less then absolutely delicious results… There is space for worry.

But that’s just me guessing as to one possible reason.

    • http://twitter.com/beebeembopp beebeembopp

Lol.  Ever think maybe people just don’t like it?  Why should ME get a free pass just cause its not Japanese?  You think it’s somehow free from criticism now?

There are a lot of western games I love, especially WRPG, probably a ton you haven’t even heard of.  Might&Magic, Ultima, Darklands, Menzoberranzan, etc etc.  And a lot of Japanese games I absolutely hate and would never touch.  Lots.  But judging from the demo and the leaked script, ME3 is shaping up to be a true turd, horrible graphics, horrible framerate, cringeworthy dialogue, retcons pulled out of their butt, stupid plot, lack of choice even though that’s their selling point, choices from previous games negated, removed features, and not even CLOSE to an RPG anymore.  Then of course there is all the BS on the administrative side that didn’t exist in the days of ME1.  DLC wh0ring, chopping the game up into tiny pieces, oh yeah, HIRING AN IGN WRITER to be a character in the game, if that doesn’t say conflict of interest I don’t know what does.  ME is not the same series it was.  Bioware is not the same company it was.

Just look at how many of their top dogs left the company, even the ME3 director, writers, and the CFO of EA just bounced.  The corporate politics are just as ugly in that company as a trainwreck like Squeenix.

Of course it will be easy for people to deflect criticism against the game, just because its western, and anyone who dares talk negatively about Mass Effect is a filthy weeb.  Whatever.

      • ShadowWolf

not saying your wrong, but it seems alot of the hate on here has to do with it being Western.

i agree EA has screwed up alot of things about the series, but i personally think its still good despite its flaws.

        no game is without flaws.

        • http://twitter.com/beebeembopp beebeembopp

OMG.  I just explained how its not.  It has to do with being a crappy game and crappy business practices.  Holee sh!t

          • ShadowWolf

             its a crappy game?

did you play the same game i did?

  • pockystix

    I. . . You know, I wonder why I even bother with FF news anymore. . . Somehow this is goofier than the Coca Cola ads with FFIX. . . possibly because it was actually funny in a “oh, how silly” and not in a “what were they thinking?” kind of way.

Attaching FFXIII to Mass Effect 3 is insulting to Mass Effect. And Bioware; who’ve went on record stating their games are the “real” RPGs, seem like they are giving Square some morsels of spotlight. . . oh, how the mighty have fallen. Crossovers are a great thing, and I would’ve been happy to see Square attempt to experiment with one that wasn’t in their comfort zone. . . but at this point in the game; it just seems like a sad attempt to leech off of ME3 and continue the embarrassing “make it appeal to Westerners” approach. . .

It’s really official; Final Fantasy is dead; and Square is the culprit behind it all.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ron.diu Ron Diu

      No opinion is ever official

      • pockystix

thanks for clearing that up for me.

    • awaiken

Sensationalize much? Do you live in Japan? Those coca cola commercials (that are almost ancient history now) were only aired in Japan. Zero impact on western gamers and the western perception of the series. Non issue.

Nobody is giving any credence to the declaration that Bioware is the only company making “Real” RPGs. It’s a silly assertion and should be disregarded. As someone else noted, JRPGs and WRPGs are completely different beasts and I wouldn’t want a gaming landscape that didn’t have both. This isn’t Highlander.

Sidenote, 13-2 is doing just fine, it debuted at number one, and sold well over 2 million units now, not bad considering it’s a sequel to a game that divided their fanbase. Square Enix is finally turning a profit, they’re financing games like Deux Ex that are great contributions to the RPG genre.

That said, the FF franchise isn’t dead, but it is deserving of some breathing room. Yearly releases cause franchise fatigue, take a note from Call of Duty Square.. I don’t want to hear the words final fantasy until Final Fantasy Versus is released.

If you’re upset by the DLC releases for 13-2, direct your anger at the industry. Every publisher is guilty of this right now.

      • pockystix

I don’t don’t even know what to respond to here. uhhh. . . let’s see.

Nope, I’m in America. I’m just a nerd who knows too much about FF and loves to remind people that they did that. . . I dunno how much more sensationalized I can be next to Square or Bioware, but dammit, I can try!

I’m actually in the camp that don’t really get the use of terms like jRPG or wRPG, just seems like over-generalization of gaming concepts. They’re different, but only in the way that a Yorkie is from a Chihuahua. I play both, and while some companies and gamers think they are so fundamentally different, they are the same in terms of what they are. It’s favoritism usually. When I bring up westernization; I’m referring to what Square (and other companies) think Westerners want (the whole “Americans like ME, so let’s crossover to get their sales!”). I don’t actually believe one is better than the other.

FFXIII-2 doing well wasn’t even part of what I said, you’ve basically just proven that FF is a zombie (I kid).

Look, you’ve got your opinions, I’ve got my crazy-out-there opinions as well, let’s just leave it at that.

    • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

I wrote a rude reply and then I changed my mind about it. You are writing from nothing but opinion. You for some reason have a hate-on for FF and you’re using generalised, half-formed ideas to get your point across.

In what way is attaching anything to anything insulting to anything? You don’t make any sense. You don’t give any reason why ME3 should be ‘insulted’ to be attached to one of the biggest-selling franchises of all time. You don’t give any reason why ME3 should be ‘insulted’ to be attached to a game that has debuted very strongly, and topped charts world-wide. You give no evidence to support your argument that this is a ‘sad attempt to leech’. You have nothing to back up your assertion that SE’s approach is ‘embarrassing’. You connect Coca-Cola/FFIX – a corporate endorsement of a video game by an outside company – with ME3/FFXIII-2 – a cross-developer design-based collaboration – with seemingly no understanding of how fundamentally different these events are.

I almost feel like I’ve wasted my time replying. Your points are so half-assed and badly-formed that they don’t even really deserve anyone spending their time pointing it out. I’m no fanboy, and I’ll be the first to admit when something’s gone wrong, and I’ll certainly stand up and say if I think SE is past it or failing its fans (it’s not, but that’s irrelevant to this argument). What I won’t do is let people who shout nonsense with no means of supporting their own argument be the only voice that is heard.

      • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Hi, I think you’re new around these parts, but calling people idiots and morons is frowned upon in these parts. Insulting someone isn’t anyway to have a reasoned debate so I’ll ask that you not do that again. Thanks!

        • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

I was halfway through changing it when you replied, I hit the button after I’d vented but before I’d re-written. Apologies! Also double apologies that your reply is now about something that isn’t there anymore . . .

      • pockystix

cute, thanks for calling me an idiot for “half-forming ideas” (how do you even do that?) Is it like. . . I dunno  or voicing my opinions.

For someone who seems to be saying I over generalized the situation; you seem to think it’s ok to call me an idiot, and say I’ve got a hate-on (really?) for FF.

I dunno if you’ve ever seen my comments on FF related news, I’m far from an FF ‘hater’. You could say my more emotional responses to the forehead-slapping decisions of Square these days are from someone who was actually well invested in the company, and thought highly of them.

I didn’t claim to know the inner-workings of the two companies agreements; in which you think I did, or didn’t because; y’know you don’t generalize opinions. What I said was based on Square’s track record as of late; what with an attempt to make their games more Westernized and toned down. Whether or not the companies agreed to do anything is secondary to the intent, which is pretty obvious.

Now, before you toss me into the “hater crowd”, know that I have given these games a chance; I’m not going off the handle for no reason here. These were the ramblings of one guy, who is rather annoyed at the asinine decisions of a company. So; if you’d be so kind, stop lumping me into your fantasy world of “haters” and try to actually see my voice as a person’s voice, and not generalize me as “people who shout nonsense with no means of supporting their own argument be the only voice that is heard”.

Especially if you’ve never once read anything I’ve had to say before, or if you’ve got some self-righteous need to respond to me of all people. And yes, I do believe you’ve wasted both our time.

  • Thomas Maloney

Good to know that even though Bioware has openly stated their hate for JRPGs, they’d still be willing to sell out for some DLC in a game series they loathe.

    • theworldofnoboundries

Haha in front of money, everyone can easily said i love u lol.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Awesome news :) One thing I don’t understand tho, is why some people are bothered by any of this. I mean…it’s an add on. It doesn’t affect the game in any way. So…what’s the problem again? I’m sure the game and it’s DLC add ons offer a little bit of everything to everyone.

So please everyone, try and stay more positive, kthanxbai :3

  • theworldofnoboundries

After reading most comments below, i just laughed non stop lol. As it seems many thinks that this is a very bad decision makes my SQ. Man it  is just a costume.

How can the topics went into ME sucks and SQ is doomed lol. I myself never played ME and after seeing the demo, i am not really hyped for the game but thats my personal opinion and probably there a lot others who loved ME3 so i won’t cal the game sucks lol.

Siliconera community is just too supportive on Japanese game lol…… well i myself is also kinda biased towards the jap anyway lol so i won’t really comment anymore lol ^^.

    • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I am a huge supporter of the japanese gaming industry (a fancy way to say I’m a huge otaku :P), but that doesn’t necessarily mean I hate anything from the west.

Actually, I prefer that SE keeps trying to cater to the westerners with DLC collabs like this rather than changing the way their games look and feel. At least like this they’ll keep doing what they always did, and these additional and totally unnecessary, optional bits of DLC will try to cater to new audiences.

“Instead of changing the way I’m cooking my food, I’m just giving you a salt and pepper flask, so you can temper my food with it; perhaps you’d like it better.!”

      • pockystix

too much salt and pepper is bad for you too, and it doesn’t help a dish that already doesn’t have any flavor. . .

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Fairsborough/100001811890859 Tony Fairsborough

They aren’t shoving it, you don’t need to get the DLC if you don’t want to.

          It’s just a costume, for God’s sake.

  • thebanditking

Sorry but this and the AC outfit are stupid, no need to sully the universe created by the games story by throwing in other outside game references. I hate when stuff like this ruins (imho) the immersion the player tries to have with the story, by reminding you your playing a game. Besides it kind of cheapens the FF brand, there should be FF outfits in AC and Mass Effect since neither have half the nostalgia or longevity of the FF series, not the other way around. Again just my opinion..

    • pockystix

they’ve already went on record in saying that their brand name is damaged, so I’m assuming they think they can only go up from there. . . I also assume they are using this as an attempt to merge audiences; which again, comes off as a cheap attempt to westernize Final Fantasy.

and before I get the inevitable “you think “J”RPGs are better!” line; I don’t even think that for a second, they both can be good and suck equally.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000172099718 Dominic Hunter

    No.
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. BAD Square Enix. Since when did we start raising you to think this way?

    • Raiu

Ever since Square Enix got infected with all kinds of diseases, Square Enix gone rogue…

One notable is “When making money in the west, do as the westerners do..”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

So how does this help sales in any way?

    • pockystix

to be perfectly honest, I have no idea.

My best guess is that this was done in an attempt to lay the ground work for some other crossover materials or in-game items down the line. Or an actual game, though only time can tell.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nonaerenada Nonae Renada

So once again….They decide to go in the opposite direction for Serah and her clothing…..nice -_-

  • pockystix

y’know, I wonder how the reactions would be different to an FFVII and ME3 crossover.

  • Raiu

    Reading the comments below..
I can see why the hate of FF and ME.. Nobody likes seeing their favorite series to be degrading or crumbing down before their very eyes… As a long time fan of FF, I want to vent my frustrations but I leave it for another time…

The WRPG and JRPG is two different things…
    I separate them as I always do…
WRPG is made by Western for Westerns and JRPG, vice versa..
    If I want to play action-oriented RPG, I play WRPG(Kingdom of Amalur, Skyrim, Witcher 2, ME3, etc)….
If I want to play different kinds of RPG, I stick with JRPG(KH, Tales of, Last story, Legend of Heroes, Persona, Monster Hunter?, etc)….

    I like both… Though I’m a little closer to JRPG…

    • Gatchaman1

      Japanese made WRPGs:

      Wizardry
      Demons’ Souls
      Dark Souls
      Trinity Souls

  • Schwer_Muta

I feel like I’ve been sucked into a black hole of unhype.

    Like, whatever man.
