Snippets From Persona 4: Arena’s Story Mode

By Spencer . April 26, 2012 . 12:31pm

Atlus is adding more story content to Persona 4: Arena for consoles. The PS3/Xbox 360 release will only have four playable characters in the beginning: Yu (the protagonist), Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko. Players will have to unlock the rest by completing scenarios which have Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 style cutscenes.

Set after the events in Persona 4, the protagonist returns to Inaba and hears about a new TV program on the Midnight Channel. The Investigation Team head back inside the TV world and right into a tournament with other persona users.

Arc System Works is updating the arcade version of Persona 4: Arena with a patch in the beginning of May. The list of tweaks is gets technical like removing the ability to escape throws when in fear status and reducing the Max Burst from taking 68% of your SP (super meter) to 67%. Each character has also been rebalanced. Since the console version of Persona 4: Arena doesn’t ship until August there’s plenty of time for Arc System Works to add these tweaks (and maybe others) into the home release.

I am excited for this game. ATLUS IS GREATER THAN SQUARE ENIX.

    • JazzWithAttitude

      No doubt

    • No Kidding.^^

    •  Absolutely. Persona and the other Shin Megami Tensei series are better than FF. I want Persona 5!!!!

    • 4shiki

I am excited too, but really? That last bit was unnecessary, if not inappropriate for the article (what does that have to do with it?).

  • yoUNg_grOUp568

    YU TALKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The game just needed minor changes to be balanced, so I hope they don’t go overboard with the nerfs and buffs!

    I can’t wait!

    •  Not really. Have you seen Chie and Mitsuru in the game? They’re absolutely braindead to play as.

      • I know, I know. It’s pretty noticeable that they’re stronger than the rest. But I honestly don’t think they’re as bad as like, CS1 Bang or Litchi, who literally spit on everybody else.

Seriously. Chie just needs some of her pressure toned down, and her 5B not a fatal CH (Which seems like what Arc Sys did), and…. Tone down everything for Mitsuru lol.

Oh, and the cast is pretty competent too. No horriblely flawed grappler here, no siree.

        • Yeah, it’s not like CS1, but yeah, it’s just the small things and make you have to strategize for some of the characters. Because going autopilot with Chie and Mitsuru is pretty silly.

Other than that, the game is still really good.

  • God, I wish Yu was voiced in P4 as well.. these cutscenes feel a lot cooler when both parties involved in the conversation do some actual talking. 8)

    • Totally. This would really help the dialogue in the S-links not feel like a onesided exposition dump.

  • JazzWithAttitude

Crap,i still prefer silent protagonist with players choices…

  • RmanX1000

Damn i want this game so bad.

  • Glad they’re balancing the game, hopefully they tone down Chie and Mitsuru, while giving Akihiko, Yukiko and Labrys some stuff to stay more competitive.

  • MCoelho

It seems like they fixed Youske’s uniform, now it shows the third year emblem, instead of the second year one.

Some information that some people may not know.

-Mass Destruction plays in a mirror match with Persona 3 characters.
-Elizabeth’s palletes are: P2’s Joker, GG’s Dizzy and BB’s Relius.
-The characters’s glasses can have their colors changed.
    -Elizabeth can wear reading glasses

    • cj_iwakura

      -Which Joker?

  • Dem animated portraits!

Yu talking doesn’t bug me in the least either, because I’ve grown used to the voice thanks to the anime. ;)

  • Oh for those you not in the know. This is the Japanese tier list.

    S+: Mitsuru
    S: Chie
    A+: Kanji
    A: Narukami, Yousuke
    B: Naoto, Elizabeth, Teddie/Kuma, Aegis
    C: Labrys, Yukiko, Akihiko
?: Shadow Labrys (Too early to tell)

It varies from time to, but it’s more or less this.

    • countupyoursins

Ironic that Akihiko needs more training. :(

    • Dustloop says otherwise, lol.

      S Tier: Chie
      A Tier: Yosuke, Yu, Mitsuru
B Tier: Aigis, Akihiko, Teddie, Naoto, Kanji, Yukiko, Elizabeth, Labrys

      • Those guys at Dustloop are crazy if they think Mitsuru isn’t the best in the game. >_>

    • LynxAmali

      -B tier

Why is it that my favorite characters are always getting dinged in games like this?

Oh well. Still maining Watson, if you catch my drift.

      • She’s still really strong regardless, just because she’s in B tier doesn’t mean you can sleep on her. The only reason she’s there is that she has low health, other than that she’s a real beast of a character.

    • Darkrise

Meh, it’s bound to change soon I’m sure. I just hope that Elizabeth doesn’t go down any further.

      • I think she’ll might go up from here, they keep finding new, nasty stuff for her all the time now. The only thing keep her down is she’s got the lowest health in the game.

  • I Kill Niggas

The final boss should have been the main character of Persona 3.

  • What an magnificent game such fair play.

  • SuigetsuHiramura

This is pretty interesting ^_^ I was wondering how the story would be like in this game.

  • Dantis

The anime cutscene is surprisingly high quality. Weird that it looks so much better than the P4G opening.

    • pockystix

well, P4G is definitely the lesser of the 2 Persona 4 games so far. . .

at least in terms of things being made new again.

      • Dantis

Yeah. The more I see of P4G, the more I’m like “Meh”.

I’ll still buy it, but I’m much more excited for P2:EP and P4U.

        • Auragar

          • Zal_Yagun

            He means this game.
Japanese name is Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka (Midnight channel) Arena.
Overseas Title is shortened to just  Persona 4: Arena

          • Auragar

Ah I figured. Thanks for clarifying! :)

          • Dantis

Sorry about that. I use P4U because P4A refers to the animation.

  • Christopher Cates

Just stinks cause there is no Rise scenario probably because she isn’t playable which means she is probably not even in this game that much, even though she was my protagonists main squeeze.

  • vileBrenman

I still don’t like the fact that the hero has an official name because it knida contradicts the whole you decide his personality and name thing that the original p4 implies. well whatever he seems emotionless when he talks anyway which leaves room for you to imply how he feels.

    • shafiq95

wad about persona 2 protagonist tatsuya and maya…those 2 had their official names from the strt

  • Xerain

Kinda sucks that the protagonist is the only one who can grant access to the TV world. Otherwise everyone could just jump into their TVs and hang out there even after he returned to the city.

    • Everyone can go inside the TV. Remember, Yosuke tells you he tried to stick his head in when Yukiko’s shadow was on the midnight channel?

I think the reason why they don’t meet up with the TV has more to do with the location of the TV world being relative to the same location in the real world. This means Narukami would be stranded hundreds upaon hundreds of miles away from Teddie’s TV if they tried to do that.

      • Xerain

Well it’s been a while since I played it with regards to other people beign able to go in.

But otherwise the geographical location thing makes sense.

    •  That’s not true at all. After each character got their persona, they were allowed to enter the TV any time. There were multiple times during Persona 4 where other characters went into the TV world with the protagonist.

  • I still want Dojima and Junpei DX
Yu’s mouth is freaking me out D:

  • MrKappa

I hope they don’t ruin the game before it gets to console with all these balance changes. I can only hope that Mitsuru stays in tact lest I end up playing another CS1/CSX Tsubaki.

  • Looking good. I’ve been playing the arcade release pretty much every week and I can’t get enough of it.

Many hours will be lost to this game.

  • Darkrise

    Loving the smooth animation!

  • JustaGenericUser

” reducing the Max Burst from taking 68% of your SP (super meter) to 67%”

Wow, that’s a huge nerf there!

  • Nyandroid

LOVE the animated portraits, without the weird breathing!

  • Rebalancing already? interesting.

  • Christine Bainbridge

HAHAHA, Yu has a single character portrait, and only the mouth changes…

    • Loserificus

      Yu and his pokerface XD

  • I hope we get dual-audio. I love the English voice cast, but after watching the anime I fell in love with the original voices as well.

  • Yuu talks!! *YAY*

    Also, dat poker face =.=

    Animated mouths! *YAYYYY*

  • YU Narukami, so they use that name eh? I thought it would be Seta Souji.. :<

    • Nathanael Chu

      Well, it’s kind of been announced for a while . . .

Glad the team’s back together again. The farewell was kind of sad.

  • A Shin Megami Tensei Main Character (Ok I know this is Persona)… TALKING? And has a voice? What.The.Fuck. I thought this was going to be a sequel of the game, not of the anime.

    • Dantis

I was thinking this too. It’s hard to consider it canon when it has more in common with the anime than the game.

    • Guest

What…? This game is really the sequel to Persona 4.

      • Yeah, I know. What I mean is that it’s quite weird that in the Persona 4 game he is a silent, nameless main character, and here we have Yu Narukami, who speaks and has personality like in the anime. I really like Shin Megami Tensei, but in fact I’m not really into silent nameless main characters, but if the original game was like that… Well, what I mean is that I think this change is really weird.

P.D.: I think this souns weird, sorry for my bad english.

        • SetzerGabbiani

Your English writing is better than some native writers.

The protagonist did technically speak, even if he was just saying ‘persona’ and the occasional grunt.  I think most of us are accustomed to Yu Narukami speaking at this point because of the anime.

    •  …..Then you probably won’t like Persona 2:Eternal Punishment.
As for the MC talking, it’s not like it destroys the entire game
      just because it’s been done…

An example of a bad game for the PS3/XB360 would probably be
the SH Duo released earlier due to the graphic anomalies that did
wreck the experience(like the lack of fog outside).

The NA release might not even have a VA for the MC,
but I do think they should pick a good voice for the
role.(Hopefully not Liam O’Brian’s Eddie Dombrowski)

      • I REALLY like P2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, much more than P4. But in Innocent Sin Tatsuya never speaks, and Maya never speaks in EP. I find it really weird too, but the difference is that Maya and Tatsuya have an official name (default in the game, although you can change it) and have personality in the game in which they are not the MC. I like main characters who speak, more than silent characters. What I meant is that it’s so weird because he never spoke in the game, that’s all.
