Working Designs Was "Close" To Doing Samurai Showdown RPG

By Spencer . April 26, 2012 . 12:57am

samsStores about Working Designs’ glory days are in a Reddit thread where Gaijinworks founder Vic Ireland and MonkeyPaw Games President John Greiner answered fan questions.

One interesting revelation is Ireland hasn’t given up hope on releasing Goemon, technically Bouken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon, which Working Designs localized, but weren’t able to get approval for. Ireland says the Mystical Ninja game is ready in English and he would like to release it as a downloadable PS2 Classic via PlayStation Network.

Ireland also revealed Working Designs was "close to doing" SNK’s Samurai Showdown RPG, but didn’t end up picking up the game.

There’s a bit of winking going on in the discussion too. When a reader asked about the English Chrono Academy trademark Siliconera discovered and if there’s a chance New Class of Heroes might be localized, Greiner replied, "Yeah, that would be interesting ;)" In response to a PSN release of Suikoden I & II for PSP, Ireland said, "We love it, too, and would love to see it here. ;)"

Both developers have ties to Konami. Ireland through Goemon and Greiner through Burger Time: World Tour, which Konami published worldwide.

  • That’s a real shame. I would’ve loved to have checked it out too.

  • ShadowWolf

i’d like to try that RPG, also, i’d buy Suikoden 1 and 2 for the PSP in a Heartbeat (despite importing it (its the only game i ever imported, and its staying that way))

  • Not interested unless it’s on a disc.

    • Hraesvelgr

Because disc releases on dead platforms are totally viable.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

I’m a cartridge man, myself. I won’t buy a game unless it’s on a cartridge and they manage to squeeze everything into less than 1M.

  • Hours

Suikoden I & II getting an English release would be amazing.

    • cj_iwakura

That’s the kind of thing Kickstarter would be great for, if viable(probably not).

      • Ryos

Don’t see why Konami couldn’t do it if they wanted to since it’s their property.  Will it happen?  I wouldn’t count on it.

  • Really hope they can pull it off with Goemon. I enjoyed the game when I played the Japanese version, and love to play it in a language I understand. Keeping my fingers crossed there.

“Ireland also revealed Working Designs was “close to doing” SNK’s Samurai Showdown RPG, but didn’t end up picking up the game.”

    I have ALWAYS wanted to play it. ;_;

    • PoweredByHentai

I’ve played it and it was kind of awkward.  Like Sailormoon RPG awkward.

  • I wish they would of waited till they secured the rights to release the ps3 version of Class of Heroes II before they did that kickstarter.  I think them limiting it entirely to the psp, and that particular game, ruined it.  I would of payed for a ps3 version though, but I am not a hand-held fan.

Interesting read on Reddit.  Though after the halfway point it is mainly just reiterating the same stuff over and over.

    • Draparde

class of heroes 2 for the ps3 IS getting released. unless something changed since the Kickstarter started.

(i infact plan to buy the ps3 version myself)

      • PoweredByHentai

Really?  Where did they say that?  O_O

        • Nemesis_Dawn

The Kickstarter was for a disc release of the PSP game. The PS3 one was always going to be on the PSN, which makes sense since it probably won’t sell enough to justify a disc. But it is still coming.

          • PoweredByHentai

            Good to know, thanks!

          • Ryos

Maybe.  Unless it’s changed they said that the PS3 release hasn’t been approved yet by SCEA.  Not sure if they’d say no but this is SCEA we’re talking about here.

  • landlock

Ah! SCEA at it’s best… Okaying Barbie but denying Goemon, Glass Rose, Gregory Horror Show etc. Yay!!

  • Wasn’t the PS1 ver. of Samurai Shodown fantranslated?

nah the only one that is being translated has been in process for like 6 years and the guy says he is still working on it but not done. its one person working on it and he has other priorities. I wish the project can be done by multiple people so it can be done faster but I doubt he will release the source

  • Zonic505

Anyone wanna vouch for Bouken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon? All I’ve heard is it’s another 3D one like the N64 games, but has a more serious tone (plus Goemon got a redesign & is the only one playable, which kind of sucks).

  • Nemesis_Dawn

I’d definitely download Goemon if they put it up for PSN.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. Which Mystical Ninja game is that- the PS2 version? I loved the N64 game, so I always mourned the fact I could never get my hands on the PS2 game…

Capcom should do the same for Cowboy Bebop and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind.  Atlus should just pay that fan translator that did Bloody Bride, Namco with Namco X Capcom, 4bp for Steins;Gate and Square-Enix the same for Front Mission 5 and Tobal 2.

  • NeoAthanasius

Please, please, PLEASE release Goemon on PSN!!! I know it is not the best Goemon game made, but I’m dying to play any Goemon game I’ve not played. I was brokenhearted when WD shut down and we where denied this release.

  • Rollersnake

I got Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn recently and am back in love with Working Designs.  Victor Ireland, you are awesome.  Just keep doing what you do best.  I even forgive you for fucking up Silhouette Mirage.

  • brian yep

Would they actually be able to get Suikoden 1 and 2?
I know MonkeyPaw has a relationship with Konami but could it actually happen?
