Capcom’s E.X. Troopers Revealed, Takes Place In The Lost Planet Universe

By Spencer . May 15, 2012 . 10:54pm

lostpla1 Famitsu has news about a new Capcom title called E.X. Troopers, which is in development for PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS. The game is an action shooting game from Monster Hunter series producer Shintaro Kojima.

Details are still rolling in, but early reports say E.X. Troopers takes place in the Lost Planet universe. Players will fight Akrid and snow pirates. E.X. Troopers has a different visual style. Instead of a realistic feel, E.X. Troopers uses cel-shading. The story is also described as a school story.

Pop star May’n (Macross Frontier) will sing the theme song for E.X. Troopers.

While Capcom has not announced E.X. Troopers for the West, Siliconera first heard about the title when we dug up a trademark back in December.

  • PS3DS????

    What a weird combination.

    • Nitraion

      Japan console unite!!

    • Godmars

Guessing because the PSV isn’t getting much love…they’re purposely ignoring the connectivity between it and the PS3?

      Capcom, keepin’ it classy…

  • Shadowman

Capcom don’t ruin this game for me men.

  • Godmars

Given the school theme I’m guessing this might be the JP-only version of Lost Planet.

Which means if its actually good the west will have to beg or it.

  • Repede91

What a weird combination of platforms.

  • Peace Legacy

…and all the graphic fanboy will start trolling once the screenshots of each version of the game come out

    • FlameEmperor

I would love to see them try comparing the graphics from both systems…….

    • Hraesvelgr

Seems more likely that you’ll have the “realistic vs. anime-style” split than anything else.

  • Hoshi星

Yea, it is quite a bizarre console combination but think of Ni no Kuni, it had DS and a PS3 title.

But it’s pretty obvious why they are doing this. Ps3 is #1 home console in Japan(if we exclude the Wii) and 3DS #1 portable console in Japan right now. Maybe it’ll get a reveal for a Vita/PSP version on the next Sony heaven meet(don’t remember how it is called).

Finally! May’n has been on a roll lately. <3

    • puchinri

Haha, this all the way~. I can’t wait to hear May’n’s song(s) for the game too. ♥

    • Colin Tosh

Its not actually that peculiar. These are the main two platforms where Capcom are seeing their sales.

      • Yet PS3 is one of two platforms Capcom has never made an exclusive for. The other platform of course is Vita.

    • boundries_san

Well, Ni no Kuni on DS and PS3 is not all totally the same here as Ni No Kuni PS3 also had continuation from the DS series so i can also see that happen here or the 3DS version being a totally different game than the PS3 game here.^^

  • Xeawn

Why on Earth would they pass up on this brilliant opportunity for Vita to PS3 cross talk/cross play?????

    • Farid Belkacemi

Because they dont care ! :D

    • Hraesvelgr

Vita sales would be my guess.

    • Solomon_Kano

Hard to justify the implementation when there aren’t even a 6th as many Vitas on the market as there are PS3s.

  • puchinri

Very interested in this and can’t wait to see more info. yay more shooters, especially on PS3DS and yay May’n~!

  • Colin Tosh

This will probably get localise if its a Lost Planet game. Capcom are really throwing their support on 3DS. Maybe one day they’ll get back to Ace Attourney.

    • Well AA5 was already announced. Figure they’re waiting for Layton vs Ace Attorney to come out before releasing more details about it.

  • If you think this is a weird combination there was one game that came
out 360, Wii and PSP. I forget the name but that was a trinity made in

Spencer is a bit vague with his words which is probably a good thing but I’ll go with what I wanna believe and thats Andriasangs report of

    -Anime cel shading
    -School settings
-Manga like evens (ala gravity rush)

  • SirRichard

A cel-shaded school story with a theme song created by a pop star…set in the Lost Planet universe.

    Yeah, why not.

    • SerendipityX

And here I was thinking I read it wrong. lol

  • malek86

Yeah, PS3/3DS sounds a little weird. Then again, perhaps they are aiming at the japanese market. Makes sense, considering it’s described as a “school story”. Though the lack of 360 version makes me bode ill for a localization.

On the other hand, wow. A school spin-off to Lost Planet. The mind boggles.

  • boundries_san

YEAH MAY’N!!!!After going to her concert twice when she come to the city i live, i can’t wait for her new song again.(Her song for Valkyria Chronicle 3 is pure godly too.^^)

And this is going to be another Arkid hunting game? DAY ONE BABY!!!

  • Now we hv school life + Lost Planet in anime style……

Trailer plz. Then I will judge.

  • Luis Camargo

So, it’s the equivalent of Valkyria Chronicles 2 for the Lost Planet universe.
If it’s good as VC2, sign me in.

  • thebanditking

Looks interesting but I wish it was a Vita/3DS title. Anyone else think its possible the 3DS version is being built on the corpse of Mega Man Legends 3…

    •  Hoo boy.  If that turns out to be the case the fan rioting will turn into a full-blown war x.x;

    • Jonathan Keycross

“Wait…the protagonist has blue in her uniform, just like megaman. She is a girl, just like Aero,´s on the 3DS just like MML3…oh no, and it is also being made by capcom!”

It´s not that uncommon that scrapped projects end up being used for other games in the same company. It helps to save time and resources…

      …scrapped project… T_T

    • Solomon_Kano

That’s a pretty random theory. I can’t imagine that it would’ve been since they wouldn’t have gotten much out of it, having to create all new assets and whatnot.

I’m curious though, what is there to even suggest that possibility? Having now done 4 games since the 3DS’ launch, 2 of which were after Legends’ cancellation, I can’t imagine why they’d decide to build on a nowhere-near-finished product to come up with a whole new franchise. Not to mention one that would also be on console.

Capcom just picked the most popular console and most popular portable at home to throw their new franchise to.

  • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I’ll be keeping my eye on this. Between a western dev handling LP3 and this being a far cry from the series’ usual M.O. with the cel-shaded look and all, I’m getting this odd feeling like Capcom intends to leave this one in Japan. Let’s hope not, it sounds fairly interesting.

  • Göran Isacson

… On the one hand, a story set E.D.N 3, which is what I interpret “set in the world of Lost Planet” that portrays the planet as settlers start to civilize the planet could be very interesting. While everyone is still struggling for survival against pirates and Akrids, the young generation is trying to build something more for themselves than simple subsistence. Showing this struggle AND what kind of culture that would develop under the circumstances imposed on humanity by E.D.N 3’s harsh climate  would be really neat, and hey, a female protagonist in an action game! That’s not something you see very often. This could be very intriguing.

On the other, more cynical side, this COULD just be a way to tell a cliched high school story that a hundred anime have told before and far better, that completely ignores the survivalism-focus that E.D.N 3 imposes on it’s inhabitants because hey- who cares about that boring stuff, WE GOTTA HAVE AN ONSEN EPISODE! :D

Suffice to say, I’m hoping for the former.

  • LittleMofreaky

Lost Planet for 3DS? I’m in.

  • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

Capcom, seriously, let it go.  Come up with somethin’ original for once.

  • Should of made Megaman Legends 3 instead. No money for you, Capcom!
