Persona 2: Eternal Punishment for PSP is out now in Japan today. While we’re waiting for news about a North American release check out the new animated opening from Madhouse. The original Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is below for comparison’s sake.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment has a new scenario written by Satomi Tadashi, the original Persona writer which explains what happened to Tatsuya and the origin of shadows.

    Wow, no god awful rap…?!

    It couldn’t be…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

Hey, bro. Don’t be dissing Lotus Juice because you can’t appreciate his genius…

      • cj_iwakura

I liked the rap part. It was the second half that didn’t work.

    • http://twitter.com/WarbossAohd Warboss Aohd

Oi, me an’ day boyz will take some awful rap over generic j-Pop any day o’ da week.

    • Ronald Bixler

The intro’s made by MadHouse, not 4kids after all…
(Sung to the 4kids version of One Piece’s theme)
“Per-so-na, Per-so-naa! Demons! Don’t give up Tatsuya! Demons! Don’t give up Maya! Demons! Don’t give up Katsuya! Demons! Don’t give up, don’t give up, don’t give uuuuup! This is how the story goes. We find out, about some demon calling teens, “Persona”‘s what they shout. Their foe Joker whose face is always unseen. They’ll face Scorpio, Taurus, and Aquarius the Queen. Per-so-na, Per-so-naa!”

      • Opn

um 4piece and the song was done by 4kids not funimation ^_^.

        • Ronald Bixler

Always get those two mixed up, (u_u) sigh…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

That’s a hella sick intro! HYPE LEVELS OVER MAXIMUM!!!

    MAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    Video was pretty good.

  • killer_rabbit

Great animation! Finally Helios, Callisto, and Odysseus get an animated appearance. I still prefer the original opening music though.

  • Gentlemagnate

You’ve aged well original Persona 2: Eternal Punishment intro. Still awesome and sexy. Love the new intro too but like @killer_rabbit:disqus I prefer the original’s music.

  • Dantis

The lack of a new vocal song makes me sad.

Almost getting tired of Order of The Holy Lance remixes.

    • Hraesvelgr

It’s the opposite for me, personally. The vocal music is probably one of the worst things about modern Persona for me.

      • Neko Kawaii

I feel it makes the game more happy and upbeat. In the old ones it was dark and spooky. Plus it’s more colourful now.

    • cj_iwakura

I vastly prefer the remix to another new vocal song. IS’ OP paled compared to the original.

      • Dantis

I still listen to Unbreakable Tie pretty often. I cannot imagine anyone listening to the music from the original.

        • cj_iwakura

You really prefer that to Holy Lance Knights? Well, to each their own.

THIS GAME. Years later, and seeing the opening (either version) still brings all my feelings gushing forth. THAT TRUE ENDING ;A; ALL MY TEARS.

  • ragnarok989

Wait…P2:EP is gonna talk about the origin of Shadows…? Like P3/P4 shadows…? P1 and 2 only had demons as far as I remember. That’d be an interesting way to connect them better than the cameos and references that P3 and P4 have

    • http://twitter.com/asagami_ k_zero

Well, in Persona 1 you fight demons, but the shadows are in the game. Not explicitly, but yes.

    • WilliamJasper

P1 had only demons, but P2 had shadows ever since. Way before P3/4 had shadows. P2 is the one to originally have the shadow self concept.

      • http://profiles.google.com/kamarikim8 kamari kim

P1 had about 5 shadows in it (4 being one person [it'd be a huge spoiler for me to say who] & the last one is the main character’s, who gives you your ultimate personas)

    • http://twitter.com/kucingila Alifia Retnaningsih

To be honest, the last boss in P1′s SEBEC arc is basically a certain someone’s shadow.

  • Alexander Aubert

the trailer of P2:EP is more epic

  • skymap

I actually really like the OP here.

  • JMaster3000

Why u not make it an anime Atlus ? :)

      *ahem* sensitive issues *ahem*

  • http://www.thejaystack.com/ Jon Stachewicz

It was okay, but nothing about it really screams “Megami Tensei”.  It didn’t seem stylized enough to be honest, and I didn’t care for the music so much.  I’m really excited to play the actual game though!

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I can’t actually decide between them. Both really good intros. I’d say the new intro is a nice reimagining of the first, so they’re both really awesome.

MegaTen games rock anyway, so it’s all about teh gaemz! :D

  • klkAlexar

I like it and it’s still similar enough to the original, unlike the P:IS one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Old OP; 3D CGI done nice + spoilery looking
New OP: Hand drawn + more awesomeness.

I still don get this game.

  • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

That… is the most stunning opening I have seen on the PSP. Tsumi was good, the new touch made it really fun to watch but the opening of Batsu here… is just asolutely epic in many ways.

Clear animation once again, good music (remix), nice scenes of the Persona and their useres. Every persona fan and most PSP owners will love this. >:D
I also find it very very satisfying that they did not use rap or a new intro theme this time.
While “Butterfly” and “unbreakable tie” had a lighter feel to it and described the feelings in the game… this one is much more dramatic and does not spoiler the feelings of the main character in any way.

Love it! But I have to admit that I love every Persona and Shin Megami intro theme in a way. ^^”’

Man, Eternal Punishment’s new opening blows Innocent Sin’s new opening out of the water. No contest. Kind of weird that the shards of glass with Ulala in them only make sense if you remember the original opening, though.

I have a soft spot for the original opening but the new one fits, it’s much more modern and appropriate. I kind of got the feeling they were restricted by the tech and couldn’t really accomplish what they were going for in the original game, and not in a good way.

Also, kind of ashamed to admit this, but I forgot how awesome the P2EP cast was. Baofu is such a baller, and Ulala is awesome. Kind of surprised the latter doesn’t have a bigger fanbase; maybe this game will help grow her one.

Wasn’t there another bonus anime video included in the original release of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment that you could access from the main menu? Just a fluff video or something. I remember it being really cool.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-Groce/100000039461956 Alexander Groce

Yep, it was based on Innocent Sin. It was pretty good too.

The anime you were asking about

      • William Carpenter

Yup, that’s the one, thanks! It’s still really cool, made a big impact on me when I saw it the first time. I love the part where the girl’s face sort of melts; kind of reminds me of that early anime scene in Persona 3.

  • vileBrenman

Tatsuya’s persona summon there was soooo epic the way the persona just steps out of his arm so cool

  • papuruka

That shot of Philemon disintegrating is brilliant; along with the song, this opening is now in my opinion better than the original one.

  • Chow

Gah, the name Satomi Tadashi instantly recalls this song… it’s almost brainwashing…

Nice. Works well with the music.
