Dark Souls: Artorias Of The Abyss Screens Reveal New "Chaser" Dark Magic

By Spencer . June 1, 2012 . 5:30pm

PC players will get to try the new Artorias of the Abyss content in Dark Souls first. It’s part of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, which Namco Bandai will release on Steam and as a boxed Games for Windows Live title on August 24.

The Artorias of the Abyss DLC won’t be available until this winter, says Namco Bandai, and will cost $14.99 as a PlayStation Network download or 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15) on Xbox Live. From Software will release Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss Edition for PS3, which includes the additional DLC on October 25. The DLC pack is slated for release on the same day.

Artorias of the Abyss, one of the four knights of Gwyn, is at the center of the story.

You can learn an additional Dark Magic that chases an object with darkness where white light from pairs of eye sockets twinkles.

A possessed tree is one of the new enemies in the Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss pack. Fire type attacks like pyromancies can ignite the scarecrow-like monster’s wooden body.

Another fight pits players against a chained prisoner tied to a pillar. Instead of removing the chain restraining his body, the prisoner tears the pillar off. Yeah, this creature looks like one of Dark Souls’ fearsome foes.

This warrior is running out of the Sanctuary Wood for his life, but those stone knights armed with giant stone axes aren’t far behind.

The Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss pack includes a battle royale where four players can fight in an arena. For PvP fans, there are also one on one and two vs. two modes.

This shows encountering with a large mushroom man in Tomb of Oolacile that grows from ground without arms and differs from Mushroom people in Darkroot Garden…

Oolacile used to thrive, but after darkness consumed the area nobody is there.

The royal family of Oolacile used to enter this tower through the Sanctuary Wood at the tower’s base.

I’m itching to explore it up and down already, what’s with the delay on the console DLC? Especially if it’s already going to be available on the PS3 in a re-release. It can’t take that long to put the new stuff up separately, can it?

    • BadGenome

To get people to buy the PC version, I guess. It says From Software is doing the PS3 re-release, so I’d assume that’s Japan only.

    • popyea

It says they’re released on the same day. EDIT: Nevermind, that’s the japan version. The difference I guess is that namco is publishing the western release. At least we know From Software isn’t the one pulling these dumb schemes.

DLC for consoles has to go through a long verification process by Sony/Microsoft before it’s put up for download. Besides that, they want people to buy the PC version.

Oddly enough the thing I’m the most excited about for this is still fighting Artorias. Also, I hope his armor is unlockable.

Why do the enemies in this game look more awesome than me? I want to look awesome too! D:

I just want to add something: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is coming to Steam as well as GFWL, according to Gamespy and Joystiq. Pardon me if this was mentioned earlier.

If it’s like GTA4 on steam, we might still need to log on to GFWL to play online.

      • Joseph Santee

Also, remember that it still hasn’t been confirmed that it’s going to use GFWL at all: The box simply shows “Games for Windows”, not Games For Windows Live. This just means that it’s made for the Windows OS. So, I’m not panicking just yet.

I think it’s time for me to finally get into From’s Souls franchise. I kinda ignored Dark Souls’ existence, but these screens look pretty cool.

See I would realy like to buy the game and its DLC but I watched a playthrew of it and the deaths just seem so cheap to me. Being pushed off of  ledges, attacking and falling off of ledges, the “target” system appeard to only work when it wanted to and would normally go to a target one didnt want….
After watching that it put me off the game it didnt seem to be challenging in the sence of making you think  but it seemed challenging in the way of “lets see if you live threw these opstacles, heres a thin ledge try not to fall as something attacks you” Thats not a challenge to me it would be more irksome for me to constantly have to go threw.
What was worse to me was the boss fights all seemed to go in the same vain…wait attack run wait run block run attack wait run…..Thats not realy a fun style of play for me and since the player was like me and an aggressive type player the guy didnt seem to enjoy all the run arround  and wait thing so I think it wouldnt be my style as well based on that.
All that said I still realy want to try it out for myself but I think im going to wait untill ive finished a few other games befor I go this rout since it seemss to be a hella long game.
