Each Storyline In Resident Evil 6 Has About 70% Of The Volume In Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 6 has three storylines that sometimes crossover into each other. We’ve see Leon & Helena, Chris & Piers, and Jake & Sherry. Which one is producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi’s favorite?

"I really like Leon as a character," Kobayashi replied when speaking with Siliconera. "I also like the relationship between Jake and Sherry and how they develop as partners and characters in the game."

In fact, it was Kobayashi’s idea to bring Leon back for Resident Evil 6. "There wouldn’t be Resident Evil 6 without Leon because he is central to the story." Another Capcom employee chimed in and described Leon as the "main main character" in Resident Evil 6.  "Of course, you won’t see the whole story unless you play through all three characters," Kobayashi added.

Capcom estimates that each story path has roughly 70-80% of the volume in Resident Evil 5.

While Capcom brought Resident Evil back to its survival horror roots with Resident Evil: Revelations, it seems like the series is continuing to evolve into as an action game. Since Kobayashi worked on a number of Resident Evil games, including the first two titles, I asked how he felt about the transition.

"Resident Evil 5 was an action based game, but it had a positive reception. It was good action. We looked at that and the reception we got from that game and also people’s desires for the entire series so far. We really think we got the balance right in Resident Evil 6 with the recent and classic games."

Resident Evil 6 comes out on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 2.

    Leon is awesome The Game
So does that mean we can choose which team we play or does the game decide?
Just hope this game is awesome enough to withstand the Awesomnes of Leon and ChrisXD

    • Luna Kazemaru

They said you can pick which arc you start from so all the ppl crying about chris don’t have to play as him but they just will not ‘complete’ the game.

      • XiaomuArisu

Maybe there will be a 4th story after you beat the other threes.
The Last story all six heroes will save the world!

or maybe a other team saves them…
        dun dun dun

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

This is what I’m hoping for.

  • http://twitter.com/monkeyking2135 monkey king

70% of the volume…so RE6 is ~2x as long as RE5? I’m -more- than down with that!

  • Sardorim

Shame that they put Claire and Jill on limbo. Would have thought Claire would have at least yelled at her brother for getting pulled back in and with how Chris and Jill acted in RE5 you would think they would be inseperable with all the stuff they went through.

    • http://twitter.com/monkeyking2135 monkey king

Claire is on babysitting duties in the cgi movies, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Jill has to lie low so umbrella doesn’t try to capture her for some experiments.
That or she’s just furiously trying to get her brown hair back.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Or more likely the current team just has absolutely no respect whatsoever for Jill and Claire and excluded them because they see this game as an attempt to fulfill their personal fantasies, not to make a stellar tribute to the series.

        • Roubjon

You treat these fictional characters like they are real beings who are being treated poorly by Capcom.  You really think that they didn’t include them in a game that already has almost every main character in the series within it already because they hate them?  Or forgot about them?  Let them tell their story any way they want to and quit thinking you deserve more from them.

  • Luna Kazemaru

“Of course, you won’t see the whole story unless you play through all three characters,”

incoming upset players then again I knew this would happen this normally happens when there is a game with more then one Arc and main character.

I can’t say i like Leon anymore even though he used to be my favourite RE character (before RE4).
I liked how in RE2 he was supposed to be a rookie inexperienced cop when the game started. He felt less powerful and by being less powerful i imagined him more as a real person in that tough situation.I imagined him as going well beyond his limits in order to survive.Same goes with Chris and his transformation.

In RE4 and 5 they both have become somewhat superheroish and i can’t feel the connection i had with them in the classics anymore. :/

    • Nitraion

      I know what you mean…
“Are they even human?” is in my head and the last gameplay footage with leon bitten by zombie an he is okay answered my question :)

      • Luna Kazemaru

I think that part was you know the player controlling it or something. You know when you get bitten if they to close to you while playing.

    • Luna Kazemaru

What did you expect he’s been fighting the things for awhile now. :/

      • badmoogle

I think it’s not a story-related problem for me (like being more experienced),but one that has to do more with the game design itself.

In the old games the scarcity of ammunition as well as the “tank” controls made you feel that you had to go beyond your limits (as a player) in order to survive. That made the characters feel more human as well.

In RE4 and RE5 (as much as i liked them as games) that feeling of connection with the characters was lost.It was all about the bodycount and therefore it made the characters and gameplay feel a bit “arcade.”

Don’t get me wrong i also like powerful characters if they are done well, but i used to like that RE games had some more human characters involved in very tough situations and they felt unique (to me) because of that. It’s difficult for me to relate with a powerful killing machine that could even kill a zombie just with his punch.

        • Luna Kazemaru

I hope Leon’s still the goofy, snarky git he was in 4, it just won’t be the same without him cracking terrible lines. I know the series seems to be trying to get more serious, but still.

Good to hear that there’s plenty of content in there, at least!

    • Luna Kazemaru

well in the CGI movies he still was cracking terrible lines but I wouldn’t say he was as goofy.

  • Jirin

This is something I wish they’d do more often in RPGs.  I’ve never gotten into the Resident Evil games but this makes me want to try out this one.

Horray video game companies, stand up to the completionists! Tell them, ’90% of our players think getting 100% perfect games is boring, you just email us the most!’

  • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Further evidence that the current Resident Evil team has no respect for Jill, Claire or any other female characters as their own entities in general. Plus that they’re treating this whole thing as a chance to pull off personal fan wishes they have. We see it in their decision to make Leon the “main main character” and he just so happens to be Kobayashi’s favorite, and we see it in how they couldn’t even talk about Sherry here without putting Jake first and making it about how she relates to him.

Every new quote coming out of these guys makes it easier for me to not touch Resident Evil 6 or any other future Resident Evil game. If they’re going to act this way, I want no part of it.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

      Oh boy!

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

A tad heavy on personal assumptions there…

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I know, much of what I’m saying isn’t stuff actually explicitly said by the team, but I’m going off what they’ve said so far combined with how they’ve treated the characters over the past several years as seen in RE5, RE:Degeneration and now RE6. With a little bit of Revelations only being a portable side game heavily sprinkled with Chris despite Jill technically being the protagonist for good measure.

My thoughts are that if I were wrong, the current team would have included Jill and Claire in RE6 as major and playable characters, a woman would have been the star of one of the three main campaigns, women would not be entirely relegated to mere support for the men or as villains for the men to kill/subdue, the team would be able to talk about Jill or Claire or any female really as their own entities rather than focusing purely on what their existence means for one of the men, etc.

My view is that if this wasn’t about the team’s own fan wishes, Jill and Claire would be in this game if for no other reason than as paying tribute to their contributions to the series, given this is their big anniversary game.

        • Chiupon

I completely agree with you — The fact that they had to make an existing character support their fanfiction protagonist— I mean Jake, oops — pretty much shows that they’re incapable of that much focus.
Resident Evil has turned into a manly love fest, it’s not horror anymore. It’s just explosions and muscles, and that’s the target audience.

If you want something that’s not a manly love fest, go play something else LOL
RE isn’t a horror series anymore, it’s action. Go play horror.

          • Chiupon

like that Fatal Frame II remake on the Wii, for example.

          • l777l

That’s a good thought. But it’s confined to JAP and PAL, currently.

          • badmoogle

I agree but unfortunatelly nostalgic fans such as myself and others still can’t help but buy the new games hoping that they will have one or two moments that will recapture some of the atmosphere of the old games.Even if it’s a quiet moment or some puzzle.Lost in Nightmares brought back some of the classic feeling of survival and from what i hear Revelations was also some kind of return to the roots (although the choice of platform was wrong IMO).Perhaps RE6 will also have a few moments amidst all the action and explosions.Still i can’t help but feel less and less excited with each new release.
I’m sure RE6 will be an enjoyable game (just like 4 and 5 were before it) but it will be so for all the “wrong” reasons.

          • l777l

            That’s an important point.

          • Testsubject909

Isn’t that how it is for most long term franchises nowadays?

I mean, a lot of people keep buying Final Fantasies in the hopes that they can recapture that magic and wonder from olden days.

            The same for Silent Hill.

And now the same for Resident Evil…

Sometimes, it makes me feel that these series should be put to rest with respect, and that some spiritual successor with greater freedom can take up the reigns.

    • Domii

      Banned for crying!!!

    • l777l

If you’re trying to make accusations of misandry here, salarta, I’m inclined to disagree. That being said, I generally happen to find the female RE characters more interesting than the male RE characters. So, in effect, I would’ve preferred Jill and Claire in playable, more central roles. One should note, though, that the series overall isn’t exactly known for good character development. They should change that — instead of abandoning survival horror.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I actually have acknowledged in the past that Resident Evil isn’t exactly Shakespeare of the video game world, even with its original games. That sort of thing is why despite my misgivings with how RE5 misused Jill, I still played and enjoyed the game, and bought the DLC too. And even if RE6 was made at any other time, I probably would still just shrug it off and buy the game.

It was Capcom excluding Jill and Claire from this game, a game they no-excuses should have been a required presence in for something supposedly meant to most strongly celebrate the series’ anniversary, that tipped me over the edge. This case was far too important for me to ignore. Jill and Claire left out of such an important game is where I reach my limit on accepting poor treatment of female characters for the sake of their “creative vision.”

Substituting “poor treatment of characters” for “poor treatment of female characters”, I would say I very much share that sentiment with you. I do see importance in creative freedom, but their decisions seem highly questionable, objectively.

    • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

I’m starting to see a pattern here with you popping up anything Capcom/RE related or Square Enix/Final Fantasy related. You seriously need to chill, even if you are being mannerable reiterating the same thing a hundreds with a few worded changes isn’t going to drive your point home or get anyone to agree with you, it’s just going to annoy them and tell you to put a sock in it.

And yes, I would like to see Jill and Claire (even Rebecca!) in another Resident Evil game too, but ranting about it across all gaming sites is not helping. Go organize a petition or start a sane forum aimed at Capcom to get people on board with you.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Thank you for the advice. :) Yes, repeating myself can become very annoying to the people that have already seen it tons of times. But I approach these things figuring that it’s freedom of speech. People can say they love these recent games or that all women in RE should only be companions to men or that Jill and Claire are nobodies as much as they want, and I can either roll my eyes and ignore it if I don’t like it, or reply to them and make a counter-argument. I may not like what they say, but they still have a right to say it even if it annoys me to keep seeing it.

More importantly, it gives me a chance to share my opinion (which is the point of talking with other people :P ), and there are always new people at least lurking if not actually posting here.

        • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

A way better response than I hoped for. Anyway, you just need to work on your approach is all, even with the theories it’s more well formed and somewhat rational compared to some rants I have seen people go on about. But like I said, if you feel strongly about that and have the drive (and time) to do it, you should organize something like that. If petitions and public forums have already been started you should see into joining them.

And trust me when I said when people don’t like to see characters take the back burner which is what public feedback usually comes into play. As far as character changes, that’s always a double edged sword, and in some regards the company or creator of said character doesn’t have to follow the same path they have always gone down for them. Case-in-point Sucker Punch back peddling on the design for Cole for inFamous 2 back in 2010 with later that year Capcom announcing the current design of Dante for the new game being created and sticking with it, though the ones being vocal on that were a minority or have since stopped bemoaning altogether.

Still, showing attention to something tends to help at times–the announcement of Code Princess being released stateside or the announcement of dual language audio for Persona 4:Arena seems to prove that to an extent.

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I tend to be civil, or at least try to make myself be civil, if the person I’m talking with is that way. :) If I’m ever extremely rude and it’s uncalled for, I hope the person I’m speaking with civilly points out my rudeness. Unless there’s a very good reason to do otherwise, I’d definitely apologize.

I don’t think I’d be good at all for starting petitions and groups for these things. Organizing a big thing is beyond me. I’d love for someone else to do it and I can support what they start, like how Operation Rainfall turned out. Plus, my fanfic writing would be used against the effort if I led it since my fanfics are worse than the very things I’m complaining about. People have done that before. The fact fanfics aren’t official and that I’d never do the kind of stuff I do in my fanfics if they might be made official doesn’t seem to prevent that at all. But if someone else started it, and I joined in, the group could ignore or distance itself from me easily.

The perception that fans don’t mind the new “Dante” in DmC just because complaints stopped… is one of the reasons I’ve repeated my complaints for this and other subjects. If you stop complaining, people think it means you accept what’s been done. Even if you only stopped complaining because people were getting sick of hearing it. It’s paradoxical in that way where you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. You have to decide which is more important, avoiding social stigma or staying strong on what you care about lest people think you no longer care.

There is no social pattern for “I’ve said my piece, you will remember all these people still don’t like it after they stop talking about it.” All you have left is people saying they love the new game, with few voices on the other side, which makes people think only a vocal minority believes the new developments suck… when in reality it could be a silent majority.

          • l777l

You are right in that silence can be problematic. And you should voice your concerns. It seems you don’t oppose the expression of things that may be considered politically incorrect. I appreciate that. I also appreciate your views, even if I may disagree with them. I generally prefer their presence (expression) over their absence, salarta.

  • Revorse

I don’t understand all the hate. But then again I didn’t really care about Resident Evil until RE5..so maybe I’m the minority.

    • Luna Kazemaru

people need something to hate on?

  • l777l

“We really think we got the balance right in Resident Evil 6 with the recent and classic games.”

What balance? The balance between planes crashing on the city, helicopters crashing into trains, and motorcycle chases? The game apparently could only be more action if the television set were to fly around the room while playing it.

Personally, I feel like the newer games were more fun, and less…well, *annoying* to play.
But I suppose there’s a market for tank controls and tile puzzles…

      • Roubjon

People don’t like Resident Evil 1-3 for the tank controls and tile puzzles.  They like the fact that they are actually survival games where you feel like you are barely making your way forward with what you have.

Really hyped, day one purchase unless capcom screw up with on disc dlc or online passes or more of that bshit.

  • enorka miho

I love Leon… And I am glad they’d decided to make fans like me happy… Oh yea! But I would suggest that they give him a little facelift.. He is not that old..  Anyway, I was little upset before when things got a little too convenient and QTE is not as challenging anymore so making it not that scary… Still, I don’t mind because its action pack! Block blusters like this is good for relaxation… Nonetheless, guess I really do miss Claire though..

  • Laharl

I hope they realize the reception for 5 was generally lower than 4, and maybe tweak the game knowing that.

So far it looks like jack of all trades, ace of none.

  • Solomon_Kano

Interest hiiiigh for this. Hopefully, Revelations step back from the all-out action provides a glimpse into where Leon’s portion is headed. Chris and Jake will have action games for their storylines? Okay, cool. But if Leon’s remains as it looks in the trailers for even HALF the game, then consider me damn happy. In advance of playing it, that would be good by my standards.

  • Alexandra Cordes

    No Steve, no purchase.
