What’s Alucard’s Special Ability In Castlevania: Mirror of Fate?

By Spencer . June 7, 2012 . 4:10pm

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate has four playable characters. You’ll get to switch between them at preset points in the game, as you work your way through through Dracula’s castle during different time periods.

Each character has their own special abilities. Trevor can double-jump and use Light and Shadow magic. Meanwhile, Simon has different sub-weapons and can summon guardians to fight for him or protect him from harm.

Last night, MercurySteam revealed Alucard as the third playable character in Mirror of Fate. While he wasn’t shown in-game, Lords of Shadow producer, Dave Cox, told me today that Alucard will be able to turn into mist to explore the castle when you play as him.

We’ll have more details of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate from E3 this week.

Tch… you gotta make Alucard more interesting than that >A<;; Although I think it'd be cool if when he parried, he'd just turn to mist instead o3o; Also kind of hope double jumping is something everyone can do not just Trevor.

But whatever all I can do is trust in mercurysteam to deliver. Although I've been hearing from people who'd had hands-on time with it, there's a lot of issues with the game. But hopefully this is just because it's still early in production.

I kind of like that they’re going with the mist transformation here.  That’s part of traditional vampire lore that classic Castlevania never really played with – they were always more interested in bat transformations.  Since Lords of Shadow is it’s own alternate universe, I’m really glad to see inspiration drawn from places the main franchise didn’t really look towards.  This kind of thing is what makes the Lords of Shadow brand artistically distinct and special I think.

Also, I would just like to put this prediction in here early:  Gabriel is the fourth playable character.  Mercury Steam has developed that character so much I just can’t imagine they’ll be satisfied to throw him into a generic villain Dracula role.  Gabriel isn’t 100% evil I’ll bet, and even if he is they’ll have cooked up some interesting scheme for him to be working on.

Another reason to think this is that the Lords of Shadow 2 trailer was basically all showing Gabriel using different combat moves ripping through dudes.  It would be really rare (unprecedented) for a reveal trailer to showcase all the abilities of a non-playable villain.  I reckon he’ll be a protagonist in Lords of Shadow 2, which also suggests that he may be playable in Mirror of Fate.

My prediction for the fourth playable character is Julius Belmont (due to LoS’ ending). I doubt that Gabriel would be playable as they are hunting him down in Mirror of Fate.

Check out this link and you’ll be able to gain so much information from MercuySteam on the game it’s insane. It will also confirm that Gabriel is playable in LoS2.

I think they’d go with someone like Sypha actually, and save Julius Belmont and other characters as such for possible continuation of the series after the initial LOS trilogy to mark off the start of this new continuity.

        • http://www.fogalchemist.com/ caleb1993

Sadly I do not know who Sypha is (though I have a feeling she’s from Castlevania 3), but I still stand by my (probably wrong) feeling. I know that they could use Julius for a future game (and I hope they do, because with everything MercurySteam’s set up, I can see the battle of 1999 turning into an insane bloodbath, with Dracula and Satan facing each other and the Belmont family caught in the middle), but I still hope he could make an appearance in MoF.

          • Yesshua

You’re right about Sypha Belnades, she’s the magic using character in Castlevania III.

I hadn’t even considered Julius Belmont for showing up in the modern day time frame.  On one hand, I really want that to be true. Julius was way cool in the other Castlevania universe, and I would love it if Mercury Steam decided to take their “modern day Castlevania” and really run with it.

On the other hand, that would be a pretty severe tonal and artistic change if they really did jump into the present.  Suddenly excuses need to be made about why modern technology isn’t in use, you need almost completely new environmental assets, and you risk losing your artistic identity the moment you move away from the whole gothic motif.  It could be totally awesome to see Julius and the present, but it could also turn real sour really easily.  We can only hope for the best though and trust in the talented developers who made the first game so satisfying :)

Unless LOS2 will take us to the modern day as well, then Julius probably won’t be the fourth playable character. They did say that Mirror of Fate is supposed to bridge the gap between LOS and LOS2, so I’d imagine that it remains in the past.

    • andref

Well mist form is one of Alucards 4 transformations in Symphony of the Night along with bat, sword and wolf transformations

  • Göran Isacson

Sooo… who here thinks Alucard will be a future Trevor? What with, you know, being the son of Gabriel and all that and his hair sorta looking like Trevors except white instead of black? Because I just got that idea in my head, and now I’m hoping I’m wrong so I haven’t pre-emptively spoiled myself.

    • Code

      Mmm I think a lot of people were thinking along those lines. I’m kind of hoping he’s a separate character though from Trevor. The potentially weird condensing of characters in Lords of Shadow makes me kind of uncomfortable opo;

      • Testsubject909

It’d be far more interesting if Alucard is indeed his own character.

    • manobon

I think it’s a pretty reasonable assumption for Alucard to be future Trevor- they’re going for a kind of streamlined/”Ultimate Marvel” story/lineage (according to the interview in Nintendo Power), and Trevor turning into Alucard seems to fit with that idea. Also! In the trailer, I think Simon is the one who sees/recognizes the Combat Cross being held by the person in the doorway (which could only be Trevor’s, since Dracula/Gabriel destroyed his).

      • Solomon_Kano

That’s a good point. Alternately, I suppose it could be that Alucard and Trevor fought together before he (presumably) dies, though. Takes the Combat Cross back and goes to tell the Belmonts about his death. I could see that being it.

    • Solomon_Kano

I can see where you’d have gotten that idea. That said, why wouldn’t Trevor just tell Simon who he is then? Seems like it’d be a pretty unnecessary mystery.

      • Exkaiser

Alucard, even in IGA Castlevanias, is all about pointlessly concealing his identity.

Alucard’s not even his name. It’s Adrian.

  • http://www.fogalchemist.com/ caleb1993

Somehow I just knew when they showed Alucard that he would be able to turn into mist (just like in SotN). It’s cool to find out I was right, but now I’m curious as to how it will be used as that was always the one ability that I found to be very underutilized in that game. Hopefully in MoF it will get much more use.

    • Testsubject909

Well, considering Dracula was turning into deadly mist in that one trailer.

      It just seemed logical.

Still disappointing that they dont make it for Vita as well knowing that Lord of Shadows is in PS3 too.

    • Solomon_Kano

Then again, by that reasoning, LOS2 should be on Wii U as well. But it’s not.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m really looking forward to this. I’m liking that Alucard’s special is mist. Seems rather fitting for a descendant of Dracula, given the whole vampire deal. I’m very interested to see who the fourth playable character is now. Guess they’ll probably hold that mystery until the game gets closer to release though.

I predict one of Alucard’s abilities for Mirror of Fate is to perpetually continue being a badass.

  • boundries_san

Alucard is easily going to make this game worth the purchase lol.^^

  • SpecDotSign

So Alucard is gonna be a former shell of his badass self from SotN? Because if you guys remember, he turned into a wolf, a bat, and mist. I REALLY hope Iga’s team is making a Castlevania game. I don’t care for what console.

    • Peace Legacy

As long as they make his cape and hair animation ‘glamorous’ enough, he should be fine in this game

    • Exkaiser

None of them were very useful anyways.

      • Code

Yeah that was kind of my feeling too honesty >3w<~

        • Exkaiser

Well, I’m sure he’ll be able to teleport and toss fireballs, just like dear ol’ dad!

  • Sperium3000

I’m still trying to grasp this. Who is Alucard now? If he’s still Dracula’s son, does that mean Gabriel had a son with a nother woman after becoming a vampire? Who the Hell is Alucard’s mother  now?

    • z_merquise

According in the trailer, Trevor is Gabriel’s son. So if Gabriel became Dracula, Alucard could be Trevor’s future self.

For what I read, Mirror of Fate involve shifting characters from different timeline.

      • Code

        Alternatively Alucard could maybe be Trevor’s half brother born to post-Dracula, Gabriel owo;
        Well not born to Dracula but you know what I mean >A<;; But Alucard/Trevor as half brothers I think would be an interesting twist too u3u;;

        • zeta

i think i like this twist better

  • Umar Jaeger

am i the only on e who thinks the combat in this game looked wonky?that whip action did not look good

    • Code

It does look wonky… I’m hearing it’s because the combat has some kind of 3D layer going on, even though it’s running on a 2D plane. In general I’m hearing the game has all kinds of issues at the moment, from jumping, to scrolling. Hopefully it’s just a sign that this is a really early build.

      • Umar Jaeger

indeed i really hope so too as the premise of the game is really exciting! im still really excited for the game though.just … meh, that video was SLIGHTLY off putting

  • Happy Gamer

Is this game sort of a reboot of the CV III? I hope it turns out well.

  • Guest

    hope the poison mist returns!!!!!
