Mistwalker Would Like To Develop Wii U Action RPGs

By Ishaan . June 16, 2012 . 1:32pm

As you may know, The Last Story director, Hironobu Sakaguchi, is currently working on iPhone games at his design studio, Mistwalker. His first major iPhone title is titled Party Wave—a surfing game that, he reported today via his Twitter, is nearly complete. In addition to Party Wave, Mistwalker are also currently working on two other iOS titles.

However, that isn’t all they’re working on. Earlier in the year, when we asked Mistwalker if they would continue to develop traditional console and portable games after The Last Story, they shared with us: “We are working on several projects. We appreciate your interest.” When we pressed to ask if those included console or portable games, they replied: “At this moment, the only thing I can say is that we are working on several projects.”

In a recent interview with Game Zone, The Last Story’s lead game designer, Takuya Matsumoto, shared a bit more about what Mistwalker would like to do, when asked about the possibility of more action-RPGs from the studio.

“The development team and Sakaguchi-san are looking forward to making more, especially for the Wii U because it has another [screen] right in front of you that will add another level of strategic elements into the action-RPG,” Matsumoto stated. “So we are really looking forward to it, but we haven’t really planned anything.”

The Last Story was funded and published by Nintendo, and is the second Mistwalker game to be published by them. Perhaps they’ll work with Mistwalker again in the near future? After all, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, did say the company was interested in partnering with third-parties for unique Wii U projects, and Nintendo have a habit of establishing long-term relationships with the studios they work with.

  • riceisnice

Nintendo’s starting to get into the RPG groove by supplying these companies with assets.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I hope this is going to be their main focus now lol. Considering, they will be able to attract lots of niches fans from other platforms as many rpg lovers(especially in Siliconera is Jrpg.^^) would love to had more jrpg in one console just like how PS3 is doing now.^^

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Well it would be nice if rpgs other than mass effect could come to the system in its first year. Though from the sound of things this sounds like they havent even made it to the conceptualization stage of what their rpg would even entail.

    • Usaamah

It looks like their really shifting focus to the wii u and I think evebtually well see a number of strong games from them.

  • epy

A new Metroid, new Zelda, new MW RPG, new Monolith Soft RPG, new Star Fox, new Smash Brothers, new Fire Emblem. It would only take 3 or 4 of any of those to get me to buy a Wii U. Not Mario though, I’m honestly a bit tired of Mario.

    • Usaamah

I’m really looking forward to the posibilites especially for starfox, I really enjoyed asdaults multiplayer.. in terms of mario mostly excitex for mario kart, and STRIKERS! strikers charged was one of my fav wii games.. really looking forward to the new iteration.

    • Yeah pretty much same as me except I’ll add Kirby and delete Smash Bros :D
For Mario I’ll get the platformer, the racing game and sport game of Mario I won’t.
And also I hope we don’t need another Operation Rainfall to make NoA release the possible MW RPG, Monolith Soft RPG, and possible Ganbarion RPG.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

No love for Pokemon???T_T Pokemon Colloseum U is my dream here.^^

        • I never played Pokémon game on console. I love the handheld one though but I haven’t play generation 4 and 5 yet. I stopped playing after Ruby and Fire Red, since now I have a 3DS I’ll probably pick up Diamond Pearl and B/W but my priority will be B/W2 and Conquest.

My dream Pokémon will be playing as Ash or Red with Pikachu and travel from Kanto to latest region with this kind of graphic http://postimage.org/image/4ym4yvw73/.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yeah.^^ Another 3DS owner.^^ Hope that we will be able to play Kid Icarus together in future.^^ And about Pokemon there, i believe you should straight went into B/W and after finishing that, you can straight go to B/W2 considering(According to my personal opinion here.) Diamond,Pearl or Platinum here is not as good as B/W series.

Conquest should played at all cost there.^^ Some of my friend who import the game, said the game is so much fun there which makes me can’t wait to play the game by myself there.^^

And damn that picture really tells me my dream pokemon game.^^ Well it is kinda like Pokemon Ranger there however, i still wish we will be able to get those kind of graphics for new main pokemon game.

          • Yep I own a 3DS with only game Zelda and Revenant of Wings. I’m eagerly waiting for KH3D, I’ll get Kid Icarus and RE:Rev some time later too but you know my pocket can’t handle so many awesome game at a time ;)

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Haha.^^ Just be patient then considering till now Kid Icarus online play is still lively, when you bought the game, maybe i can still fought with you.^^

    • LynxAmali

I suddenly had the thought of possibly the strangest crackpot idea ever.

A Star Fox and Metroid crossover.

Mother of god. What’s wrong with me?

      • kupomogli

Star Fox? Blech. While Jehuty will soon be playable in 720p you should try Omega Boost which is amazing. Panzer Dragoon isn’t the best rail shooter, despite what you may hear, but it’s a good game and also better than Star Fox.

But as for your interest in a Star Fox Metroid crossover. Not sure if you’ve already heard of it, old news and all, but there’s a rumor one is going to be on the Wii U.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Sin and Punishment is indeed the best rail shooter there however Panzer Dragoon series is also one of the best out there.^^

        • LynxAmali

          I’ve played all of those.

And that’s interesting that there’s a rumor like that going around.

Hopefully, it comes to fruition as I love Metroid and find Star Fox to mildly fun.

        • @LynxAmali:disqus @kupomogli:disqus That rumour is pretty ridiculous in the first place, but it was also confirmed to be untrue a couple of weeks ago.

On that note, anyone that honestly thinks StarFox x Metroid is a good idea should be beaten severely until they beg for forgiveness! Metroid should never be tainted like that. It’s a series that has its own otherworldly feel, its own identifiable traits, its own rich universe. Dragging something like StarFox into it would serve no purpose whatsoever.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Pikmin3???T_T Purple Pikmin is getting sad here lol.^^

  • Mago Iichi

I’d rather the market be oversaturated with Rpgs than shooter after shooter because rpgs are so broad that they can be almost anything with the right gameplay.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

^This is the best statement i have ever heard today.^^

    • LightZero

I highly agree. I’m getting tired of all these shooters.

    • Same goes for shooters it’s just people don’t try and find their true potential and just stick with what’s safe.

    • Asura

If more shooters were like Killer 7, well, then **** RPGs. However, most shooters are not like Killer 7…

      • z_merquise

        Or maybe you mean Vanquish.

        • Asura

No, I meant Killer 7. Vanquish was also tons of fun.

What exactly was the point of your comment? That you think only one creative shooter exists?

          • z_merquise

Nope. There are lot’s of them but that’s the only shooter that I can think of right now.

    • z_merquise

Any genre in games can be anything with the right gameplay. Not just RPGs and even shooters.

There were shooters out there that tried different things and with matching awesome gameplay like Vanquish. It’s just sad that only few people took notice of it.

    • I prefer RPGs, but there should be a way for them to co-exist on the market without feeling like one is killing the other.

  • SirRichard

Nintendo have the opportunity to give the Wii U one hell of a varied library by co-operating with developers, I hope they jump on this.

  • Hey, if this means we’ll get more The Last Story and Xenoblade-ish games from them, I’m all for it. Granted, by Action RPG I’m assuming The Last Story-esque type games, and not like… Zelda, say.

But either way, I look forward to seeing what Mistwalker will come up with. I’ve always enjoyed their creations in some way or another—or at the very least appreciated the thought, work, and creativity behind them.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      A new Earthbound???^^…….??….. I can’t dream here.T_T

      • If they can drag Shigesato Itoi over to them, then I’d be all over that.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Sadly Itoi did mention, he is done with the series.T_T

  • Godmars

I still get the feeling that Mistwalker’s nt in all that good a shape. What with the multiple complaints from other devs of needing to sell 1-2 million copies of their titles to turn a profit, and most of MW’s doing under that.

    • malek86

They would probably be funded by Nintendo again. Also, almost every RPG doesn’t reach 1-2 million copies, not just MW’s stuff, and they still do fine.

I think the “HD games need to sell upwards of a million” line was just something that might have been true in 2006-2007, but not anymore. Especially because nowadays most games don’t really look like they’re trying to be cutting-edge.

      • Tom_Phoenix

I don’t know. It’s still preety darn expensive to make an HD game. Kingdoms of Amalur sold about 1.22 million, yet it needed to sell at least 3 million just to break even. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will also have to sell about that much, since it’s development budget is about €50 Million/$66 Million. And then there’s the whole trend of heavy engine reuse and DLC…Overall, it’s little wonder that around 100 development studios have closed down since 2006; the HD obsession has taken a heavy toll.

It’s precisely for this reason that Xenoblade Chronicles probably would have been impossible to make (at least as it was) on an HD console; the sheer cost alone would have killed the project outright.

        • malek86

Kingdoms of Amalur was a disorganized mess from the start, and they spent way too much money developing it. Ghost Recon is supposed to be a blockbuster, so of course it will need to sell well – I imagine a lot of its 50 millions budget will have been for advertising, not development.

On the other hand we have companies like Gust and IF, who are making PS3 games which are considered successful on the ballpark of 50.000 copies. Demon’s Souls was already considered by From Software a hit when it had reached 150.000 copies.

Now granted, none of these games looks particularly good or have high production values. But the point is that you can have a low budget even for a HD game. You just need to organize development accordingly.

The market is full of games selling relatively little and still receiving sequels or being considered profitable. The proliferation of middlewares has made it possible. And if HD games really always needed a million copies to break even, nobody would be developing for the 360 or PS3 anymore since, uh, at least 4 years ago.

        • Godmars

And I can’t but further think that Sakaguchi’s “relationship” with Sony likely cost him his best opportunity to make an HD-RPG which might have sold well.

Though at this point I think that consoles and handhelds have exchanged levels of popularity as far as Japan goes.

        • Vampiric

thats because they fuddled the budget

          poor management

    • Tom_Phoenix

Mistwalker hasn’t been developing games for platforms with high development costs, though, so the sales threshold they have to reach is much lower.

  • We’ll still have to wait a while since Mistwalker is making three ios games.

They mightn’t be big but that doesn’t mean it’ll take some time.

  • This, Monolith Soft RPG, possible Ganbarion RPG, Zelda, Kirby are the reason I’ll get a WiiU

  • MrRobbyM

    No objections here, Mistwalker!

  • z_merquise

I hope they can continue what they started with Cry On. I’m really interested with that game’s concept.

  • Alexandra Cordes

    Let this happen.

  • Solomon_Kano

Oh, hell yes. In a generation of largely disappointing JRPGs, Mistwalker and Monolith have managed to deliver some of the best, so to know that they’ll both be developing for Wii U is phenomenal. It’ll probably be a while before we hear anything about their projects, but I’m excited all the same.

    • Vampiric

theres been so many great ones i cant count

      • Solomon_Kano

Eh. For my money, there have only been a handful. I’d count the PSP’s lovely library, but that’s last gen.

        • Vampiric

ive been playing great ones on ds,3ds,psp,vita,pc, ios, android, wii, ps3, 360 this gen

          • Solomon_Kano

I’m sure you have. As I said, there’s only been a handful that I found great.

That said… 3DS and Vita? The only RPG on 3DS at the moment (unless you speak Japanese) was on DS already, and the Vita’s only RPG (again, unless you speak Japanese) was on PS3 already. They have RPGs on the way but, unless you’re importing, I can’t imagine what great RPGs you’ve played on them as of right now.

          • Vampiric

And I find that a pity

The 3ds has over 10 rpgs already which is about as many as the ds had……and the vita is building a nice library too

          • Solomon_Kano

The DS… only had… 10 RPGs? Or do you mean in its first year?

And maybe I missed some, but the only RPG on 3DS outside of Japan at this moment is Devil Survivor Overclocked. What else is out?

          • Vampiric

            first year

I will let you research that, you might learn more

          • Solomon_Kano

Ah. I’m good on the learning though, as I don’t particularly care.

As far as I’d seen, Overclocked was the only RPG on 3DS outside of Japan right now but, if there’s more, good to know.

          • Vampiric

            it isnt

  • karasuKumo

Yes, god yes. There needs to be more action RPGs with motion controls. I’d love to see an action RPG that used the Wii Motion Plus as well as Skyward Sword did just at a faster pace.

  • kool_cid414

To me my decision of the generation will depend heavily on the rpg availability. In this generation Sony and Nintendo really were the consoles I ever really used because of Sony’s quantity of decent rpgs and Nintendo’s quality rpgs (spending over 100 hours on Xenoblade and I’m not even done with main story yet) the only time I play the 360 is when I rent a game from the library so I think who ever has quality and quantity of rpgs this next gen will win my money.

  • Nintendo, just buy Mistwalker so they will never have to worry about funding again. Just, y’know, actually publish their games in America for a change.

  • Vampiric

id want more turn based rpgs

“Mistwalker wants to make action-RPGs for the Wii U”

    This is completely misleading.

1 person who works for mistwalker, is not mistwalker

    • Solomon_Kano

“The development team and Sakaguchi-san are looking forward to making more”

It’s not misleading, you just didn’t read the article carefully.

      • Vampiric

        I read it carefully enough

just because 1 random employee says its true, doesnt make it

if its like if I spoke for the entire site

        • Solomon_Kano

Except he’s an employee of Mistwalker who’s actually around to know something of the company’s dealings and you’re one visitor on a public forum. Not really the same.

          Also, random employee?

“The Last Story’s LEAD GAME DESIGNER, Takuya Matsumoto”

          Random, indeed.

          • Vampiric

we dont know what hes involved with honestly.

And a quote from 1 person about the group is worth as little as anything

          • Solomon_Kano

I’d imagine that the lead game designer on the team’s last project is a pretty good person to look to for information, otherwise the people who did the interview probably wouldn’t have taken the time to interview him.

If he were some no name programmer or something, I’d agree with you, but the lead game designer? That’s an important enough position to make his words worth something. He may be one person, but he’s one person of prominence. If Ishaan or Spencer made a statement about this site it would be of the same level of importance, to repurpose your earlier example.

          • Vampiric

if thats his view, i believe it. I just dont like people speaking for others.

          • Solomon_Kano

I can agree with that sentiment, but I’d imagine that he’s done so with the permission to speak on their behalf. Otherwise they wouldn’t be talking to him about it.

          • Vampiric

id just like confirmation is all

  • Vampiric

aside from imageepoch I cant remember a better first year for an rpg house
