By Spencer . June 18, 2012 . 11:50pm

Sega put that Valkyria Duel trademark to use and just announced a card game with characters from the entire Valkyria Chronicles series. Valkyria Duel has over 200 characters and 3D battle scenes.

NHN Hangame will release Valkyria Duel for PC browsers. A smartphone version is slated for release later on. Valkyria Duel is free to play and is supported by virtual item sales. Hangame is running a user test for Valkyria Duel later today.

Well, I like Valkyria Chronicles and since its free, might as well try it out!

  • Wondering_Zero

*Throws fist in the air* SEGA!!

Seriously, when are we getting a new console VC game? I mean VC2 didn’t look bad, but switching from PS3 to PSP was a very lame move IMO. I know they did that because the PSP was/is really big in Japan, but I really miss the beautiful graphics from the first game. Not to mention that we never got VC3 over here in the states…

Oh well, I’ll be hoping to at least see a Vita version that gets released in the states.

    • Luna Kazemaru

We never got it because people kept being gfx nut buggers over it not being on the ps3

    • Andar

Apparently Valkyria is dead in the west now. I’m not sure exactly why it turned out this way, but it’s certainly unfortunate.

      • malek86

It has a tendency to happen when a game doesn’t sell enough, I think.

It probably didn’t help that VC1 was released when the PS3 was still in its initial low sales phase.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

With the combination with people wanting it on the big screen, the fact that the PSP didn’t do well here in the west, and that everyone and their mothers pirated the balls off VC2 kinda doomed itself from the start.

    • Zertan

They did made a VC3 but it won’t be here to the west. Sega gave up hope that it would sell here. That and it is on the PSP.

  • This is too painful to watch. I really hope this isn’t Sega saying we’ve given up on this franchise and now plan to squeeze every penny, but that’s really how it seems to me.

    • I dunno about that. Did it flop in Japan too? Because last I remembered, it only didn’t do so well overseas…

In fact, according to wikipedia (I know, I know…) it says VC did twice as well as it did there than here. I don’t know what this means in comparison to other games, but I think it did decently considering how it wasn’t a AAA game or anything.

It looks like to me that they’re trying to expand the franchise in any way they can. Not because it’s a sinking ship, but because they’re trying to build a franchise.

  • kupomogli

Looks sort of like a Daisenryaku/Advance Wars/Gihren’s Greed style game. While app game is meh, it’s nice they’re trying to expand into different gameplay styles rather than wear out the gameplay of the original title until it gets stale and repetitive.

  • epy

Yep, just like everyone expected. Its sad that when a new trademark of an established series is discovered, everyone figures its this type of game. Its sadder when they’re right too. Well, its not like we would have gotten it anyway even if it ended being Valkyria Chronicles 4.

  • This gives me a very bad aftertaste… Sega really knows how to disappoint me in a way. Of course I’ll try it out and I don’t think that it will be bad but… I loved the PS3 version and the PSP version of the game (even though the latter was not as awesome as the PS3 one) and I would’ve bought VCIII in a flash.

It’s just sad that we might see such a good game like this in the future, becaus most people I know would give hell to see another PS3 game or the 3rd installment of the series on PSP.. *sigh*

  • Solomon_Kano

Not what I was expecting, though I kinda expected that it wouldn’t be… what I was expecting? Yea…

Either way, this sounds interesting enough. I’d give it a look if it were to make it into a language I understand. Y’know, unli- *shot*

  • Pichu0102

    Damn it Sega.

  • Vampiric

    guys dont be sad

I am sure a real valkyria game will be announced soon enough

  • GDI

The music almost made me cry reminding me of the fond memories I had playing multi-hour battles of the first installment.

The beancounters have taken over the franchise. Thank you, Sega.

    • badmoogle

I got shivers listening to that music. :(

    • badmoogle

I got shivers listening to that music. :(

  • badmoogle

I think SEGA have recently stated that they’ll stop making AAA games and they will be focusing on mobile and social games so this doesn’t comes as surprise to me.
Still it pains my heart like a rusted knife to realize we’ll never see another VC on a console. :(

    • Not completely true. They’re cutting back on titles, yes, but they’ll still make titles that they deem will sell well e.g. Sonic.

      • badmoogle
      • badmoogle

        Translation from gamekyo’s article:”
On the eve of E3 2012, we are able to inform you, according to our credible sources, that Sega Europe will be finally closed in the coming months as well as all the local branches in Europe like Sega France. This is partly a consequence of the ineffectiveness of Sega’s strategy over the past several years of developing games by western developers. At the same time, Sega will also announce, according to these sources, they will no longer develop AAA games on consoles, but will focus on digital games, notably for cell phones and tablets. Sega’s last big title developed by Creative Assembly will be presented at E3 2012 in a few days. Furthermore, remember that Sega has announced they will not be at Gamescom 2012.”

  • Franchise Milking much ? Just make a new Valkyria Chronicles for PS3/Vita already T___T

    • Luna Kazemaru

How are they milking VC its only been 3 games and a OVA yeah learn what milking is.

  • :(

  • doubletaco

I wish I could say this surprised me.

  • Brimfyre

Sega you suck so hard. I’m glad the Dreamcast failed now. You deserve all the misfortune that has come your way. Such a badly managed and horribly run company. You employ talented creative minds who come up with amazing ideas like Valkyria Chronciles and then you squander that creativity with bad marketing decisions and then blame the games thinking everyone wants social card games. Seriously. You suck.

As always I resend my above statement if you bring VC3 stateside.

    • Read the site rules, please. Especially points 2, 3 and 4. Do not repeat this sort of comment again.

      • Brimfyre

It was meant to be a tounge-in-cheek comment as the first reply points out I called for their failure and their success. Clearly it didn’t come through that way. Lol people take Internet comments way too seriously. Like I’m really happy the Dreamcast failed.

        • You didn’t make it clear how serious you were in the comment above. If people take it “the wrong way”, it’s not because they’re being too serious; it’s because you didn’t get your point across. Not to mention that it’s entirely possible to get the point across without that sort of mood – which brings me to another point: Don’t try to shrug off rude language as “nothing serious”; it’s because of that “nothing serious” that the Internet is as chaotic as it is now. Besides, if you’re not serious, why drop a comment like that to begin with?

          • Brimfyre

Mostly I was making a statement on the fickleness of gaming fan culture who usually act like they hate something until they get their way and then they love it again.

Think of my original comment as an piece of art, a statement on society if you will, more than a comment.

I apologize if I offended your delicate sensibilities, good sir.

          • It’s not about offending me; it’s about not dropping careless comments. However you justify it is, frankly, your issue only.

          • kactaplb

“Sega you suck.” is rude ahaa… I can flame a company all I want. Sega you suck. Go ahead, moderate me.

          • You can say you don’t like them but don’t be a pleb and say it without justifying why you don’t like them or simply using that quoted line alone. Oops seems I insulted you *sigh*

          • kactaplb

Didn’t realize internet commenting was a debate class but fine, what chris said. And nope no insult taken thanks.

Really my comment was for drakos pulling that rule bs.

          • It is part of the site rules; they also encourage users to not slander, and to put more thought into what they post.

          • Awesome, I just find it not constructive and bothersome having someone insult a company because of one game or if they don’t like the next game of the series (ie valkyria duel). What doesn’t make sense for me about Chris comment is that he would if I understood correctly change what he said if Sega bring VC3 to the state when he said “I’m glad the Dreamcast failed now. You deserve all the misfortune that has come your way”. So he would change that along with everything else if a game was localized? Is he just saying that because of Sega bad decision?

I know I can ignore the comment but it will always be there whenever I want to get through the comment. *sigh*. I’m usually not the type of person who would just join in moderator’s warning or such but these sort of things pisses me off.

          • Saying that a company deserves all the misfortunes that came its way isn’t rude? Taking delight in their failures isn’t inconsiderate? For all their missteps, SEGA makes good steps too. I myself has things I feel they could have done better/otherwise, but I’m not gonna use other people’s missteps (and my dissatisfactions) to justify hate and slander.

“I can flame a company all I want.”

Not on SiliconEra; we don’t encourage it here because it’s not productive, considerate or just thoughtful. So the bottomline is: No. You can’t.

Don’t overwork your head about getting banned – not with me anyway, unless you like crossing far beyond the lines; I prefer talking face-to-face. (I can’t guarantee anything if you try to provoke other mods.) Although if you think what you said was ban-worthy, you probably shouldn’t say it in the first place.

          • kactaplb

since when was a company a person? last time I checked, they have no feelings or concept of rudeness. well putting aside my provocation, if you think it’s acceptable banning people for expressing their opinion, whether you agree with it or not, well… I have nothing further to say. to each his own, cheers.

          • Now you’re just trying to avoid the context entirely. I really hope I don’t have to explain to you why thoughtless slander is inconsiderate and unproductive, no matter who or what you direct it at. Secondly, don’t try to hide behind the excuse of “opinion“; I always explain what I have to say without relying on those excuses. Lastly, don’t try to make it sound like you’re defending your right to free speech when you don’t intend to use it properly to begin with.

That’s all I have to say, and I won’t repeat it.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You know, it makes you looks bad when you hope for one company to failed but still hoping for their product to come here.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This news is surely not the news all VC fans has been waiting. But i still believe VC is still a strong franchise to Sega considering they still took some of their funds to come out with this game.(Just like their other franchise.)
Hope that this game will be able to bring profit for them and allowed them to come out with VC 4.^^

  • Luna Kazemaru

Ita amazes me how people are butthurt at sega over it like its a segas fault. Marketing aside its not only their fault. Some of these comments make me sick

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol, you should not be suprised here.^^ Considering many people here had the sentiment where they considerid Sega a very bad company for not providing what they want.
Which is the irony considering many other company also does this.

    • What makes me sad is that even if they localise VC3 they will still complain that the would rather want to play this on the PS3 or complain about its graphic.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        Don’t localize=Dead
        Localize=also dead.T_T
        Sega never wins.T_T

      • Luna Kazemaru

Which is sad becasue IMO VC3 is the best i found myself loveing all the charaters. Tho yeah if it did happen it would be like vc2 all over again.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yup.^^ Considering most of VC character in VC 3 is very interesting here even though i thought i had a feeling that it is a bit more into sidequest there considering it still had the same timeline as the first VC here.^^
But well……. it is still hell of fun to play there.^^

      • British_Otaku

Well, the series started on the PS3. Can you blame people who are much more likely to have a PS3 (in the West versus Japan) for wanting their series to stick to the core console till it is replaced?

You see similar responses when a Wii original IP moves to the DS like Elebits. Yes, even when both systems have sold significant amounts anywhere you pick. Likewise, people still want their Okami 2/3 (despite the DS Okamiden being the former) or a WindWaker sequel. I guess, my examples probably change the formula more but changing the console of choice never earns applause and rightly so anyway…

        • It was bound to happen anyway. It’s just one of those thing you got to prepare if you want to continue playing the series.

          • British_Otaku

You can never prepare for a series jumping from the PlayStation 3 to the Wii or DS like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest. >_>

You either get lucky and you have/plan to have the system in question or you end up hearing about a sequel to a game you can’t play, not as it is on the next generation of consoles which is overpriced or region locked… But as they changed system meaning you have to pay more money to be able to experience what may be unable to replicate the experience offered on the other system.

I’m conditioned and ready for a system move I guess but my wallet isn’t. And expectations for the game will be set by the last product(s) of the franchise whether they are “I want HD” or “High Schools don’t belong in VC”.

          • Well I am. After all one of my favourite final fantasy game jumped from PSX to GBA then to DS. Or how about Harvest moon all rune factory game was on the DS until frontier and tide of destiny then went back to DS. There’s probably way more games that had these sort of changes.

          • British_Otaku

It’s pretty lucky that those sequels got worldwide releases and were on systems which have worldwide presence (100+ million and a much higher chance of you having one) and the portables are region free. Aside from being relatively affordable all around.

We can’t say so much for other game sequels or successors.
There is no reason why someone who got Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), wouldn’t be able to get Valkyria Chronicles 2 if it was on the PS3. Having another price barrier being getting another system which has little appeal typically isn’t a good start. Much like hearing about the next Dragon Ball game being on the Xbox being great would mean little unless I have an interest in the Kinect periphreal enough to spend even more.

    • doubletaco

It’s not Sega’s fault for taking the series in a “cheap cash-in” direction? I don’t follow.

      • The popularity of the series in Japan has allowed for “cheap cash-in”-s to happen. Plus, SEGA are in need of money, so any business with a IP that does well, will always cash-in on it. However, poor marketing lead to VC not doing well; VC2 struggled due to PSP not doing well in the west. If they brought over VC3 as a digital title, I’d be really happy.

        • Testsubject909

I’m a bit surprised I haven’t heard of some Halo game for the Apple Market.

      • Luna Kazemaru

Because they wanna make a smart phone game for it its milking or.a cash in….That logic…Anyway my comment wasn’t about this game in the first place read it and the replys after you would.know this. I not to big on cell phone games but i know that a thing in Japan so it doesn’t effect me to much

  • Vampiric

    people need to chill

  • Jack Frazee

Well, I’d obviously rather they bring over VC3, on freaking any console.

But if this comes over, I’ll take what I can get. Just give me all of the Valkyrias. :<

  • Darrel Daley

    I want Valkyria Chronicles 3 :(

  • Angeru_Lito

Everything that happened to this franchise is such a bummer (at least for people in the west) would it help if SEGA releases VC3 as a PSN download? a game that got such high praise and good scores and very few bought it then the sequel gets made for a system that arguably couldn’t do justice to the first (even though I love VC2 is a great game) … we need to blame someone , first person shooters? Call of Duty? gamers? someone!

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Blame those people who don’t want to buy VC 2 because it is released on PSP rather than PS3 there lol.

    • Luna Kazemaru

the fans duh and well sega to

      • Angeru_Lito

I can’t blame fans those are the only ones who bought VC2 the few of them (myself included) but I would say I want a VC on PS3 too but I think that’s not enough.

  • I’m glad to see Valkyria Chronicles is still around since it is one of my favorite games, BUT I just want another PS3 game. Please SEGA.

    • Testsubject909

      Considering SEGA’s having financial troubles…

  • Jirin

I saw the topic, and thought, cool! An online multiplayer version of VC combat.

Then I saw ‘Card’. What do cards have to do with VC? Why not just online multiplayer VC?

I was willing to forgive VC2 being on PSP, though I wasn’t fond of the multiple map stuff or the more kiddy plot. I hear VC3 has a more grownup plot that has nothing to do with high school, maybe I should see about importing it.

    • Barrylocke89

From what I understand, VC3 still has the multiple map thing (mostly because the PSP wasn’t able to handle the maps in the way that VC1 had it), but at least it’s supposed to be more refined, and like you said, it’s a more mature plot.

The one thing I wonder about VC3 is if it’s as grindy as VC2 was. I recall VC2 made up for the lack of maps by making you have to do more grinding in order to upgrade your characters and get new weapons.

      • kactaplb

it was better in the fact that it was so much easier to change your class. none of this cert grinding bs

    • aoihana

Well, normally cards have absolutely nothing to do with Valkyria Chronicles, but in this case, it’s a dueling card game based system.

I assume your cards account for your characters, attacks, defense, movements, and all the other possible strategic elements. I think it looks really fun, and the art and cinematic battles are beautiful!

So, yes, they’ve nothing to do with Valkyria Chronicles, but it’s not a mainline game, you know? (◕‿◕✿)

  • aoihana

I didn’t think much of this, honestly, but I think the card dueling is a very interesting take, and it looks really fun, too!

Just thinking about how the card system works is very exciting! I think there would be character cards, attack and defensive formations, traps like ambushes or shock trooper barrages, skill cards that work for one turn, it’s interesting! (>y<)

The art looks beautiful, and the 3D battle scenes are really well done, I think! Very promising! (◕‿◕✿)

    • Testsubject909

True, though there’s still going to be a lot of sadness and rage at this, plus a lot of despair as the hope of seeing Valkyria Chronicles on home console seems all the lower now.

edit: Though, hopefully, this is probably just a side thing.

  • Card games on tanks? ^_^

It’s like combining two of my favorite things, card games and Valkyria Chronicles!

    • Testsubject909

I came… To tell you… CARD GAMES ON MOTOR…oh… wait, tanks.

  • raymk

Yep expected this game. I don’t know why people keep asking for another VC game though with the state that sega is in. They already said they aren’t going to be making anymore AAA games in the future so that means VC will never be on console again. Heck sega even messed up the anarchy reigns release date you can tell they are in serious trouble. I’d love this game a lot if it was on a phone that I have but its a browser game. I’ll try it since its free but meh unless its on facebook it won’t last long.

  • Seijien

They ruined this series for me. It was fine moving it to the PSP, but I have no intention of getting a Vita (assuming that’s where they go with the series) or playing a browser game. :|

  • Internet is Crash

mmm the possibility of having Baldren and the same field.

  • Hoshi星

What’s sad (probably) it’ll make more money than the first three titles combined. =/

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Between Sega being absolutely retarded by not cutting a deal with publishers to localize VC3 and this, I can safely assume they are just OK with killing one of their most awesome IPs as of late. Truly a shame to see VC end like this~.
