Corpse Party: The Anthology May Be For Adults Only

By Spencer . July 9, 2012 . 10:31pm

Not to say that the other Corpse Party games are for kids, they aren’t and in Japan all of them are rated CERO D for people 17 and up. Even though Corpse Party The Anthology: Sachiko’s Game of Love – Hysteric Birthday 2U is supposed to be a love comedy… it also might be rated CERO Z. Titles with a CERO Z rating are highly restricted and bear an 18+ restriction, essentially making it like an "adults only" game in North America.

What’s unusual is Corpse Party The Anthology is rated CERO D as a standalone game, but the product page says the limited edition is under review and will probably be CERO Z. The limited edition includes a DVD called Corpse Party: Missing Footage. I suppose whatever’s on the disc is pretty grisly since that’s the main difference between the two.

  • Ironic, isn’t it? XDD

  • majestix1988

being cute is being pervy too?

    • Remember, CERO and ESRB are very different beasts. A CERO Z rating usually implies excessive violence and blood more than anything else.

…Doesn’t mean the OAV isn’t pervy, of course… but it also doesn’t mean it is!

  • Clifford Michael

I hope the CP OVA is bloody and grisly!

  • gaiahatergaia

Correct me if i’m wrong but, shouldn’t all the Corpse party games be 18+ only? You don’t want kids watching disturbing scenes with all kinds of gory deaths imaginable. i’m 18 and i still dirtied my pants each time one of those scenes pops up.

    • Technically speaking, Corpse Party is “M” in ESRB so it’s for ages 17 and up. The game carries the same rating in Japan, CERO D, but what’s unique about Corpse Part 2U is the limited edition sports a CERO Z rating. So, the limited edition is like an ESRB “AO” or 18+ while the standard game is CERO D.

My guess, and this is pure speculation, is that DVD is going to be pretty graphic. As Thomas from Xseed explained below CERO Z is usually a graphic violence rating when people are getting harmed. Assassin’s Creed games, for example, are CERO Z titles and so is Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

      • gaiahatergaia

But by graphic, do you mean sexually graphic or gory graphic?

        • “Gory graphic” if a game pushes the sexual graphic bounds CERO would refuse a rating and it wouldn’t be able to be sold at regular stores since all console games are required to have a CERO rating.

          • gaiahatergaia

            Oh i see.
But if that’s the case then weren’t the previous titles graphic in terms of gore? I actually had to play during the day, otherwise i wouldn’t sleep.
This might sound silly but, It creeped me out more than Fatal frame. lol

          • Fitzkrieg

Nothing super gory was really shown, though. It was mostly description.

          • Alphabet Soup

I think it has to do with actually SEEING the violence.  In the games, many “Wrong Ends” were text/audio only.  If it’s an anime DVD, well…I just hope they don’t have the Yuka bad ending from Chapter 3…

          • Alphabet Soup

Ah so that’s why when some games come from PC to console, they dial down some things even if the CERO D rating still happens.  Thanks for the explanation Spencer, that makes sense now.

  • Luna Kazemaru

This is only making the wait harder for me.

  • Spider-Man

    ….me gusta this.

  • One can never have too much Corpse Party. I can’t wait! =^_^=

  • Well, tis is amusing. So I wonder, will the OVA be rated AO 4 gore or smex scene?

Well, its oky to tk a break be4 the real sequel strt ryte?

  • Dantis

Okay, am I right in thinking the characters in these games are like, ten years old? They look pretty young.

Which makes it miiiiildly disturbing when people ask if the rating is for violence or sexual content.

    • Actually, the youngest character is… 14, I think? Possibly 13, I can’t recall. And most characters are 16 or 17.

Remember, this is anime art. Everyone looks young in anime art!

Also, this is Japan. Where an anime fan having a lolita complex is totally normal. ;) So it’s entirely reasonable to suspect sexual content may be responsible for the CERO Z rating, even if it’s unlikely to be true.

      • Dantis

If most characters are 16 or 17, that’s okay.

Lolita complexes are vile, but I won’t get into that.

  • Alphabet Soup

Oh man, I’m not really interested in the game itself, but I have a morbid curiosity about that OVA…

  • MCoelho
    • Don’t think it’s necessarily based on the first game, as the only screenshot that specifically suggests as such is the last one (which is a from a flashback that’s pretty central to the story of the whole series)… but it does look very promising! Thanks for posting. ;)

      • MCoelho

I just said it was from the first game because of the last screenshot, i hope it’s based on the first game tough.

It’s hard to guess from the screenshots since everyone from the first game is alive in 2U.

  • Dantis

So, is the first Corpse Party worth playing? I’ve been thinking of downloading it for a while now for my Vita.

    • Crimson_Cloud

One of my top games on the PSP. Great characters thrown into a suspense story wrapped up with spooky atmosphere. Be warned… your body must be ready. ;)

      • Dantis

Well darn, I’m going to go and buy it then.

I seem to be accruing PSP games on my Vita and not playing them. I now have BoF3, TitS, P3P (Which I already finished on PSP, BUT IT COUNTS!) and now Corpse Party.

I guess I’m waiting for the inevitable day when I’m stranded on a desert island with nothing but food, a power supply and my trusty Vita.

And when that happens, I shall be well prepared.

        • Crimson_Cloud

That’s some neat collection for the desert island friend. I can tell you that you won’t be bored XD. Especially with BoF3.

Don’t forget Growlanser Wayfarer of Time that will be released soon. ^^

  • Crimson_Cloud

    Yoshiki bromance! XD

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand, an OVA with all those awesome Corpse Party characters! On the other hand, an OVA where we actually get to see them die grisly… not quite sure if want. Maybe if I get to wash it down with the rom-com game…

  • revenent hell

I go back to I want I want I want…I kinda was slightly uncaring about the game when initial word of it sank in but I have to admit if I got it with a gorey OVA I would be utterly happy and content
