Phantasy Star Online 2 Is Coming To North America And Europe In Early 2013

By Spencer . July 9, 2012 . 2:00am

pso1Sega will release Phantasy Star Online 2, the free to play sequel to the Dreamcast hit Phantasy Star Online, in the West. PSO World reports an English version will be ready for North America and Europe in early 2013.

Phantasy Star Online 2 has randomized dungeons with D-Arkers to defeat and three races to play as – Humans, Newmen, and (my favorite) CASTs.

On July 4, Sega launched Phantasy Star Online 2 in Japan. They have big plans for Phantasy Star Online 2 too with content updates going all the way up to early 2013.

    That’s sick.

  • Shuryou

It’s free to play, but… Day one, baby!

  • maxchain

The day the Playstation Vita version gets released here is the day I’m gettin’ a Vita.

  • Go2hell66

just another reason you should pick up a vita, and Ragnarok oddysey should help kill the time until it gets released

    • Solomon_Kano

At this point we don’t know if the Vita version is coming though. Or did you just mean it being on the system at all?

      • Go2hell66

oh yea your right i just assumed the article was talking about the vita version since it has the Vita tag next to the heading, hopefully they bring that over as well

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I’m holding out for that version so I hope they bring it too.

  • Draparde

This is awesome news! man…there’s alot of 2013 games im wanting… i hope there’s some good ones to be announced for 2012 still XD

  • Zeidge

Somebody punch me, I must be dreaming.

And I wonder if they would do anything for those who are already playing on the Japanese servers.

    • darkonezero

  • DanijoEX

You have no idea how much joy I have right now…

Sega, you always manage to surprise me with excitement.

  • “(my favorite) CASTs”

[Hi-five @Siliconera15:disqus] I made a CAST gunner in the character creator mainly because it looks like a Gundam.

  • Luna Kazemaru

    getting PSU flash backs…

  • Yippe! This is what I’ve been waiting for, my 2013 calender is set. Hopefully PSO2 should turn Sega’s fortunes around!

  • Anime10121

Sadly, dont know if want.  I’m currently conflicted.

I like Phantasy Star, but I dislike MMOs.  The pro is that its free to play, the con, I have a weak computer, so unless the Vita version is also free to play (and also localized), I’ll have to buy it for Vita, which I also currently still dont own, however that might be changed by the time this releases (depending on whether or not it receives more support for NEW games and less ports).

Hopefully its free to play on Vita too, so even if I am unsure, I’ll have a lot of time to test it out and see whether or not, I really have the time, or if I’ll actually have fun in an MMORPG.  If I end up liking it (which I hopefully will), I’ll do my part and buy a lot of items and crap to offset it being ftp.

    • thaKingRocka

It’s not an MMORPG. From what I understand, it is still simply an ORPG.

A decent computer is one of the best investments you can make. You will get so much more for your money than just a gaming machine. My PC, which I built myself, cost me just under $1,000, but I could have gone lower and it still would have run PSO2 according to these minimum specs.

      – Windows XP (32-bit versions only)
      – Vista (all versions)
      – 7 (all versions)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 (equivalent or better)
      RAM: 2GB
GPU: 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7800GT (equivalent or better)
      HDD Space: 8GB
PSO2’s minimum video resolution is 1280×720 (true 720p). You must have
your computer’s video resolution set to output at at least this
resolution for PSO2 to play. Bad news for those of you holding onto your
      antiquated 1024×768 max res monitors.

      • Anime10121

Well, see the thing is, I COULD build a PC to play the game, but I dont game on PC that much.  And the only benefit to updating my computer would be for games, as the one I currently have does all that I need to do on it sufficiently.

If I were to actually upgrade the computer I have to a “gaming PC” or even one to match the low requirements of this game, I’d be spending almost 600 bucks, and thats just to play this one game.  Most other “good” games that come out for PC, also come out for consoles, as PC rarely has an exclusive that outweighs the hundreds of quality exclusives you get for home consoles/handhelds.

I’m a big fan of Japanese games, and while I do like a lot of western stuff like Uncharted, Diablos (which is also rumored to come to consoles), Deus Ex, etc. too, for the most part I play Japanese games, and they are released on consoles and rarely make it to PC.  So I just dont see the value in upgrading my PC to play Japanese games that are rarely exclusive to PC.

        • thaKingRocka

What are the specs on your PC? Near as I can tell, 600 would get you a complete overhaul of CPU, GPU, and MoBo. I would imagine you only need a new GPU at this point and maybe a PSU if you have a low-power unit.

I recognize that the PC has gone mostly ignored by Japanese developers, but there are some good works out there. The Ys series has started showing up on Steam. There has always been a large doujin market, which has given rise to games like Melty Blood. You can also emulate DC, PS2, and Wii/GC with some very pretty improvements and you can even use your controller of choice. I started P4 on my BC PS3, and then I got the PS2 emulator to compare. It’s much nicer on the emulator, and I think my P3 playthrough will be on the PC, which I have connected to my TV and can use with wireless controllers.

What I’m really saying though is that a capable computer is a sound investment, and it should not be seen solely as a gaming system purchase. I’m not trying to convince you to buy a new PC or anything, but I just don’t want to see you limit your perception of a PC. $600 is too much for PSO2, but $600 is not too much for a decent PC that has the potential to offer so much more.

          • Anime10121

Honestly, while I make improvements to other peoples PCs, I still have a really cheap $350

Edit: Actually I think I bought the thing for $250 on a sale

PC that I have made no modifications too.  I just dont see the point besides improvements for gaming and maybe video conversions.  My PC can play games like YS on Steam which I’ve purchased already.

My specs are honestly, the original specs that came with my CPU (although I have added a little ram)

            OS Windows 7
Original Graphics unit: geforce 6150se nforce 430
            Ram: 4Gb
Processor: AMD athlon II X2 215
Havent opened the case in years but if I remember correctly a 250W PSU

I mean, I told you, its EXTREMELY basic :P

If I were to build a PC to game on, I’d rather start over from scratch, and that would cost FAR too much dough to game only a few games on.  I dont do emulation on my computer so that’s a moot point too (although technically its able to emulate up to Ps1 games just fine).  And I still have a PS2 so no need there either.

          • thaKingRocka

Yeah, that would definitely be better to simply abandon if looking to upgrade.

I hear you on the not playing too much on the PC, but I think if you had access to a decent one, you might find more western games to enjoy as well as eastern, and you might find even more fun in emulation. I’m taking the thoroughly additive perspective on this one.

I’m glad you can run those Ys games on there. I’ve always wanted to play them, but never got around to them. Now, with Steam, I am much more likely to play them than I was with the PSP releases.

    • Peace Legacy

“Hopefully its free to play on Vita too”
Well, you still have to buy the game copy, so there’s that
*Edit: Ooops, look like the Vita edition is actually free 2 play as well, according to PbH, my bad*

    • Solomon_Kano

Eh. If you’ve played PSU or the PSP Phantasy Stars then you should be fine playing this. I don’t like MMOs either (the original PSO is the only one I really liked), but this is pretty much the Phantasy Stars of old with other people. Really, if you liked those games then you can’t go wrong here.

I don’t have a good computer either, so I’m hoping for the Vita version as well. But hell, even if that doesn’t get localized, I’m getting it. The good thing would be, for me at least, at that point we would have an English version of the game in the PC version so (in theory) it wouldn’t be too hard to navigate the Vita version by looking online. I’ll wait for a bit after it comes out in case they announce it for the US, but I want this game too much to pass up on it.

      • Anime10121

Good, then maybe I can go into it without fear of it sucking like other MMOs I’ve tried to play over the years.  I’ve always heard good things about the first PSO but sadly I never got to play it for more than 5-10 minutes.  I’m hoping I can get into this game though,  I need more space JRPGs, especially since Tri Ace isn’t talking yet about a new Star Ocean!

        • Solomon_Kano

Aw man, the original was awesome. That’s how I got into the series. I used to play it on my cousin’s Dreamcast.

You and me both on the space JRPGs though. I haven’t played The Last Hope yet, but I’ve heard mixed reviews. My space JRPG itch hasn’t been scratched at all this gen.

          • Anime10121

Sucks that I missed the first game, but after hearing all of you, I’m DEFINITELY gonna give the new one a try!

On Star Ocean 4, while it could have been better, its no where NEAR as horrible as people say it is (although the VA is sad for a SE game).  While the plot’s a little shallow, the gameplay itself is tight as SO ever was!  Also, if you’ve played First Departure you get to go back to a planet that was in that game, and here remixed music from it, which was fun.  While its no where near as good as SO2 was (I mean not many rpgs are, that game was fantastic), I’d say its at least as good as 3 was, just without any sort of huge plot twist like 3 had.

Basically its a good rpg but not a great one.

          • Solomon_Kano

If it’s as good as SO3, I’ll give it a try. That’s the only game in the series I’ve played (reeeally wish Squenix would get 1/2 up on PSN) and I liked it well enough.

Hope you enjoy SO2 whenever you get around to playing it. Supposing they localize the Vita version, you’ll definitely be able to catch me playing it too.

          • Anime10121

You should definitely try Star Ocean 2 if you have a PSP as it is the best game in the entire series (not an exaggeration by any means)!  It actually is in my top 10 favorite games of all time/genres.  Hopefully Square will get that game on PSN (and First Departure) so that people can play these gems on Vita.

I’ll gonna get PSO2 as soon as I get a Vita, as I’m now pumped to play it :P

          • Solomon_Kano

I have a PSP, but I hate buying UMDs since I have a Vita lol. Seeing as the game’s been out for years and (like all the other Squenix titles I want) still isn’t on PSN, I guess I’ll have to make an exception.

          • Anime10121

Please do, as SO2 is a fantastic game (and 1’s not to shabby either)!

At this point, I sadly have little faith that Square will actually put their older games on PSN, and even if they did, if they called for extra work to be done on them to play on the Vita, they probably wouldn’t put forth the effort (they’d rather re-release them later on as “remakes” to sale at full price on Vita).

          • Solomon_Kano

All they need to do is put it on PSN, making it work on Vita is Sony’s job. Considering how many games SE has and how all of them that are on PSN right now are compatible with Vita, I’m sure Sony would hop right on that if Squenix would hop to it. Sony definitely would prioritize KH and Crisis Core at the least. Honestly, I wouldn’t really mind remakes of those two titles actually lol. They’re much too lazy for that though, so they’ll likely remain on UMDs alone forever.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Not only was it fun to play, PSO really deserves a place among the most important and influential console games of all time. It almost alone proved there was an online market for such things.

Plus, PSO was far deeper than folks give it credit for. Each Race/Job combo truly could become a different experience as you learned.

          • Anime10121

Now I think I HAVE to support PSO2! It sounds like I missed out on quite the experience with PSO1 and I dont wanna make that mistake twice:) Im just hoping the Vita’ll have more support announced for it at TGS this year in the way of new software (and not ports of older games), so I can feel confident about getting a Vita!

    • It’s almost the same as the old Phantasy Star Online. The grinding gets a little painful later on, but it is in no way as bad as Pay-to-Win Games.

      • Anime10121

But thats the problem, I never got to play the original PSO on Dreamcast for more than a few minutes.  I remember liking what I played but that was over 10 yrs ago.  Still, Im gonna give this one a try and hope for the best!

    • PoweredByHentai

@Ishaan:disqus said that the Vita version will also be free to download and free to play.

      • Anime10121

Oh really? I didnt catch that.  I thought I heard the Vita version was ftp, but I thought you still had to purchase it at retail.  That makes things really easy then!  I can just download the game play it, and if I like it, buy a crap load of items to make it worth Sega’s investment:P

        Thats great to hear:)

        • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, just scroll up the comments section.  :D

  • The news I have been waiting for ! The hype is building up again :D

  • ZEROthefirst

    Oh god my pants again…

  • RaikageV

    Early 2013? So… June, right? (^_^)

However, its nice to hear that there actually will be a further purpose of my Vita’s existence.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

CASTs are really good!  I’m definitely making another robot girl sniper when I pick up the Vita version.

    • natchu96

I’ve seen videos of rangers in this game, and they’re somewhat OP as far as weakspots on bosses are concerned, so I guess I’d do that too.

Or a newman girl. They always manage to look good aesthetically :D

  • This is WONDERFUL news, but it hurts me a bit, too.  I want to play this so bad with friends that are holding out for the English release, but I already have ~25 hours on my Hunter (A red-haired swordsman named Space Adol) in the Japanese game and there’s no sign of me stopping yet.  I hope I can play with their characters once the US one hits, but I guess I could always just re-roll if that’s not the case.

  • Kai2591

    awww yeaaahhh~

My $3700+ gaming rig was worth it!

    • tubers

That’d better be from a few years back xD

Hope this doesn’t require anything above an AMD/ATI 5870 to run at 30fps/1080p :P

      • Kai2591

        last month actually haha~
Unfortunately computer stuff costs a ton in my country -_-“

        • tubers

Well at least your fortunate to have such a rig! :D

      • Tatsuya1221

It doesn’t, you can probably reach that on high settings easy, i was able to get that on the benchmark near max on a gtx 460, going to the lowest got me over 200FPS, so you should be ok.

  • Enigma_XIV

PLease let there be a PS Vita Version somewhere in there…

  • Xapth

I don’t think I can take any more good news this week!

First Xillia, then rumors about Tokitowa, and now this?

    What’s next, Sol Trigger and Digimon World Re:Digitize?! ;v;

    • Or Final Fantasy Type 0?
Hey, a man can dream you know.

    • eilegz

phantasy star portable 2 infinity and final fantasy type 0 for psp and vita

  • Wow So much happy in the morning gaming news~ *hugs computer*

I was kind of holding my breath. I mean they didn’t say anything in that line up about the future plans. Little voice in my head was telling me ‘That’s the Japan side plans” And so I continued to cross my fingers and wish upon a star. (  ;~;) My wish came true. (✿❛◡❛)ノ

  • So, Sega is struggling financially but can bring this. Why can’t Capcom bring Monster Hunter Frontier again?

    • Two different situations. This has online, while the Monster Hunter games in Japan don’t, which is a big factor. Capcom USA have said that they intend to keep bringing the games over, and have hinted a number of times that Tri G and/or 4 will be coming over, so take that for what you will.

The other factor is that PSO2 is a free-to-play online game, which many see as the future of videogames at this point in time. That would easily explain why Sega are willing to take a risk on it within the larger context of things.

      • malek86

I think he was asking about Monster Hunter Frontier, which is an online MH for both PC and 360.

Anyway, Sega and Capcom have different priorities, I guess.

        • @twitter-139913734:disqus @malek86:disqus Oh, whoops. That’s what happens when you start replying to people after just having woken up!

Well, for starters, this is free-to-play while Monster Hunter Frontier is not. Charging for a game like that in the west wouldn’t work at all either. And yeah, as Malek said, different priorities. Capcom in general are a good judge of what would be financially viable and what wouldn’t, whereas Sega really aren’t.

          • malek86

You are making it sound like you think PSO2 will fail :P

          • Solution: Make Monster Hunter Frontier F2P too.

    • eilegz

its hard to compete on an competitive west MMO, unless you are WOW, the market its oversaturated with low quality korean mmo, even big names like funcom and bioware with the push of EA its struggling very hard to make an impact in this space.

High quality AAA game that diferentiate from others, bring some japanese style game could help and free to play its an good entry level to attract new users.

  • Darkrise

Damn that’s quick! I need a new computer fast!

  • Tatsuya1221

Now my question would be then, regional servers, or worldwide servers, would really like to play this with my friend in the UK.

  • I love you SEGA.

  • Soooooooooo happy to hear this news! I’ve been waiting for this! ^_^

As far as the tags on the article go I can see that its going to be for both the PC and Vita, but is the PC version coming out first or will it be a simultaneous release?

  • Nitraion

Yesterday was Xillia Today is PSO2 not mention Nin nikuni and ayesha too… 2013 will be perfect year

  • Jeremy Barnes

That is a long delay. I’ve been looking forward to this game, but not sure if I will care in ‘early’ 2013.

  • So are they bringing both PC and PS VITA versions at once?

    • Solomon_Kano

Probably not since the Japanese Vita version would have just come out at that time. If we didn’t get this at the same time as Japan, I’d be surprised if we got the Vita version at the same time as Japan.

  • PersonaSpace

Oh geez, it’s going to be the Phantasy Star Universe situation all over again. No doubt that the English servers will be months behind on content again.

    • Luna Kazemaru

So i’m not the only one having flash backs.

      • Nitraion

What happen back there? sorry i don’t know the story…

        • Luna Kazemaru

Lack of support huge gap in content releases.

  • shion16

Best reason to own a Vita

  • kupomogli

This info practically guarantees a Vita release.  Day one.

A western Vita release, I mean.

  • Gyaaaaahhh!! Can’t wait.. 2013… since the pc version is free to download, how about vita? Because I probably going to play this on my vita instead pc.

    • kupomogli

I doubt the Vita version will be free.

      • Brandonmkii

If it’s a hard copy, I’d agree with you. But since it’s F2P, I suspect it will be download only. There’s other F2P games on the vita, you know.

      • miyamoto

Dude F2P games are free. That is why its called Free to Play. You don’t pay nothing.

    • In Japan, the Vita version will be free-to-download/free-to-play as well. No plans announced for the west yet.

  • Jungo

No…. No way. I’m dreaming, right? This can’t actually be happening.

  • Guest

Wow, 2013 really is going to be the best year for gaming IMHO. I really hope SEGA will release the Vita version as well. I’m sure they will though, I’m so happy right now! xD

  •  Can this game be played offline like the original one?

    • AoiKaze

From what I’ve played in the JP version, there’s no Single Player/Offline option unfortunately. =

    • I think it’s online only, as in, you HAVE to be logged in to play…
Which is a bit sucky if you ask me. I played a whole load of PSP2 offline…

      • kupomogli

While that’s true, I’m sure that offline play is going to be added to the Vita version.  It’d be pretty stupid if online was a requirement for a portable.

Phantasy Star Online for an example. There was an offline mode for Dreamcast, but if you start up Phantasy Star Online on the PC, it’s online only.

        • malek86

Given that apparently even the game itself will be free to download (at least in Japan), I wouldn’t be surprised if it were multiplayer-only.

  • AoiKaze

From Xillia to PSO2, looks like many of the games I’m waiting for is getting a ’13 release date. Oh wells, I’ll be patient. X3

I’ve been playing on the JP servers, and although I’ll likely stay due to the constant updates, I’m definitely also gonna play on the EN servers since I have friends who would like to play, but are a bit daunted with the JP menus and whatnot. XD

  • Solomon_Kano

Good. I suppose with the Vita version hitting Japan around that time, if we see it at all, we won’t be seeing it til 2014 then?

  • Oooooooh baby! I can’t wait for this – gonna be so good!
Not sure which would work better for me though – Vita or PC.
I’m guessing Vita version will be a while longer?

  • dragoon_slayer12

    BANGIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the only thing i ask is offline multiplayer for the VITA version. i understand their reasons behind it, but i want to be able to play side by side with my brother/wife/friend (ha) without having to be online. ps3 version, that can stay  online only, it’ll be more fun that way (although offline split screen would be a nostalgic welcome)

    • Perona

       There is no PS3 version.

      • dragoon_slayer12

I know, but it’s inevitable that pso2 hits some type of console

        • Solomon_Kano

Vita version’s as close as you’re gonna get.

        • sherimae1324

          nyahahaha no PS3 version!!! :P

  • KayJay N.

This is brilliant news, Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to the West! What a great day, also I’ve just SEEN the Olympic torch pass through my street here in cloudy Britain!

  • NeoAthanasius

This gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling that Sega used to give me all the time. I still love you Sega!!!

  • eilegz

its good see that japan its opening up with some of this japan appelaing franchise….

i do hope they get a ps3 version but its good to push an MMO in the west that can compete with WOW and many other bigger names. Free to play model with high AAA profile game its going to be amazing, i hope square enix adopt this model for XIV v2 but i doubtful….

  • omeganeko

Best news i have had in all week. Thank you siliconera

  • Razentsu

Hell yeah, we in there! Good stuff, Sega. :D

  • miyamoto

CAN’T WAIT!! The innovative action MMORPG from SEGA that launched a thousand imitations!

  • Mantiskilla

I don’t quite understand why people would really want to invest in the Vita version.  I mean it doesn’t take a powerhouse PC to play the game with high settings after all.  My PC is pretty stout, but still prob just your avg PCs with a decent vid card could run the game great

    •  Just for the sake of portability i guess…but in the end, it will be better on pc :P . Typing was a pain in PSP2 and infinity :/

    • Luna Kazemaru

well apparently there is cross play with the vita and pc version. o.o but I will just stick with the pc version and if the cross play is true I’d wait it out to they fix the bugs.

      • Mantiskilla

Yeah I heard about that.  While a nice feature I think I’ll let my Vita skip out on this one and just continue to play it on PC.  I’ll have to start over once we see it come to NA/EU but that’s ok

    • Well I mean the Vita version is also free so yea… .__.;;

  • SirRichard

    CAST superiority!

I’m probably going to stick with the PC version if there’s a choice, just to play with friends. Maybe we’ll even try and be a group of Autobot-themed CASTs, who knows.

  • will this be download only or will they make a vita game disc? just curious.
