One Piece RPG Is Based On The Romance Dawn Manga

By Spencer . July 10, 2012 . 3:31pm

Before One Piece became the pirate series we know and love today, Eiichiro Oda created a precursor called Romance Dawn. Luffy appears in these stories along with Shanks.

One Piece Romance Dawn is being adapted into a PSP RPG. A scan from V-Jump shows Shanks patting a young Luffy on his head. One Piece Romance Dawn: Adventure at Daybreak uses a command battle system. A screenshot shows a solo Luffy about to pound four sailors with his fists. The game has a 3D world to explore and players will be able to customize Luffy.

One Piece Romance Dawn: Adventure at Daybreak is slated for release this winter in Japan.

Nice new One Piece game for the win, wonder if it merges into the current One Piece that we know and if Luffy meets everyone else and etc. How far could it go?

    • Shogunreaper

Its not based on the same story as the animemanga, its based on some side story.

Yeah i know, its retarded. I’d like a good action rpg type game on the psp that follows the full one piece story.

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

The scan made it look like its in the actual canon, so this article makes it seem confusing anyway.

  • I’m actually very excited for this. There are a few other series that I would love to see the original oneshots return (Fate/Stay Night… Male Saber was awesome!), but One Piece getting a full fledged RPG based upon Eiichiro Oda’s original oneshot is way, way more than enough for right now. I’m definitely going to be following this game.

Sorry to temporarily break the rules but I wish Super Awesome Game X was on System Z.

On topic, I do have a PSP somewhere (or I’ll buy one) and have been considering the Toriko and Hunter x Hunter games, I’ll keep an eye on this one.

Not many adaptations are based on pilots or one shots besides the actual series and the Romance Dawn Story special:

Perhaps it will be based on that and expand with manga or anime content. Looking forward to an RPG adventure.

  • Hmm… interesting… Romance Dawn and not the actual OP manga. Hmm. Oh well. lol

  • Göran Isacson

    … But. Why?

One Piece is one of the most awesome long-running manga in print, and throwing all that history out in favor for the barely established world in the original Romance Dawn just feels kinda silly. I mean, sure- on the one hand you do have an opportunity to expand on that and give the writer free creative license to go in strange new directions if they want to, but I still can’t say that “hey you know these characters that you love so much? WELP YOU’RE NOT GETTING THEM :D” is a very convincing sales argument.

Eh. Maybe if the full character line-up is the crew we saw in Odas original sketches in that one sketch-book… i’m mostly just mystified as to how you sell a game that has characters that are only KINDA like the characters you know and love.

Alternate reality fictions are pretty popular and be a breath of fresh air while keeping it familiar. The Ultimate Marvel series are successful, after all.

      • Solomon_Kano

Indeed. DC’s New 52 saw an increase in sales for them (though that’s the main fiction now, I suppose).

      • Göran Isacson

True, but on the same note they CAN also turn out rather troublesome. According to the sources I’ve seen, the Ultimates-verse isn’t really that succesful: Ultimate Spiderman is, but apparently the other series in the Ultimate verse aren’t really selling since they mostly appear to be rethreads of old storylines that people have already seen before.

I suppose that as long as people aren’t that aware of the stories, the AU can find success as it’s own thing. Or if it diverges enough from the source material that it truly does become it’s own thing. I guess I’m just curious as to how they’re gonna make this different, when Oda’s meticulously crafted world is half the reason I love the manga.

Well one piece does just come out here as kaizoku musou.

So this is just one way to breath new life to the franchise here.

    • malek86

Something tells me it will be only loosely based on Romance Dawn, ie. it will still have all the typical OP characters, just in a slightly different setting from usual.

  • Solomon_Kano

This is actually pretty cool. It’s a pity it’s on PSP though. Not because I really want it on another system (I mean, I love my PSP), but because that guarantees that we won’t see it. One Piece games are few and far between over here, so it would’ve been nice to see it on something where it had chance at making it over.

    • Bilal Mahmood

Yeah and they are the only one which make awesome anime based games. can’t wait for this one

  • Haohmaru HL

cool, but i guess i’d be happier with a gorgeous 2d platformer, something like dragonball advance adventure on gba was, oh well

  • HassanJamal

too bad they aint making on the vita. oh well just gonna download it on my one anyways :D

  • Prismind

Good thing I still have a psp

  • The scans show that Axe Hand Morgan is in the game. And if they bothered with him, I think its safe to say the rest of the crew will show up.

  • And i was hoping to at least be able to use Gear Second
