Sort Through Supernatural Events And Find The Truth In This Vita Game

By Spencer . July 12, 2012 . 1:10am

One of Nippon Ichi Software’s 20th anniversary games puts you in the shoes of a TV reporter. Special Report Division has players investigate supernatural occurrences like E.S.P., poltergeists, and UFOs by finding clues and doing interviews.

Similar to the Phoenix Wright games, some evidence will have contradictions depending on the testimonies you gather. After you scrutinized the details, it’s time to pick a story to present on a TV news program. The twist is Special Investigation Division doesn’t have a "right" or "wrong" path, whatever you present the viewers is the truth.

Special Report Division comes out on August 23 in Japan.

NIS is already working hard on the PSV, they have two games in the pipelines while any other developers would hesitate to have even one.

Are they trying to build an early audience, I wonder? It’s certainly a workable strategy, especially for niche companies. That way, as the userbase grows, it’s possible that their fans will grow too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that Project-D title were for PSV too… although, three games might be overkill.

    • PoweredByHentai

I thought that Project-D was the God and Fate Revolution game? So there is one more game in addition to these two?

      • veruses

Different game. They are literally working around 4-5 games at once.

I wonder if NISAmerica will show any interest bringing this over since it is from N1.

        • PoweredByHentai

I think they will bring those over, largely because they’ve already announced Legasista and Witch and the 100 Soldiers and even Mugen Souls.  Mugen Souls was available for pre-order at Anime Expo while Legasista had a playable demo kiosk.  Witch and the Hundred Soldiers is available for pre-order on Amazon at the moment.

All three are Nippon Ichi projects.

          • You say those? Are you meaning all of the anniv games? Verus was specifically saying this game. Since it is a little out of the norm. And yes those three games are all NIS and are awesome. Too bad as I have and will probably continue to say they are all for PS3 and I still don’t own one.

          • PoweredByHentai

Zettai Hero Project and that detective Prinny game (Disgaea Infinite) and even the Prinny Hero games were completely out of the norm and yet they got brought over.  Especially Disgaea Infinite, which is really what Special Report currently reminds me of.

          • malek86

Isn’t Mugen Souls an Idea Factory game?

          • PoweredByHentai

Yup.  Thing is, Idea Factory is using Takehito Harada for the character designs and Harada is technically a Nippon Ichi employee.

          • You should have corrected your line as Nippon Ichi America’s projects…

          • PoweredByHentai

Nope.  I see no reason to because all three projects have Nippon Ichi (Japan) staff involved in one way or another.

          • Detective Prinny game? I guess I never played that. But I don’t think Infinite is that different is it. Eh whatever. I was just saying Verus was saying this game in particular since it is different and odd.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, Disgaea Infinite is actually pretty well constructed for a detective Prinny game.  It was one of the more immediately affordable titles that was localized by NIS America, retailing for 20 bucks at launch for the PSP.

        • Isn’t it lovely to have so many games in the pipeline? Answer: Yes. lol And I sure hope they bring them over. They usually have enough balls unlike some companies I am still holding grudges against.

      • As Verus said different game. There is seriously legit like 4 anniv games. But even if Project-D were God and Fate Revolution that doesn’t necessarily mean it would not be PSV. More Vita the better. It’s a new-ish system more games can never hurt.

        • Not only are they new games, they are new IPs. :D

          • I thought that 1 game was a pre-established IP?

          • Which one?

          • The Project Arcadia one. The side-scroller. I thought it was a third Prinny game. But it did say Princess… eh.

          • Yeah, it (Project Arcadia) is about a princess. I sometimes mis-read things as well. Don’t worry. :D

    • Over kill? Nah. It would be awesome. :P

  • Ok. I am really starting to like this as time goes on seriously. I hope it gets localized. NISA don’t let us down (you usually don’t).

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

NISA would do the right thing with this license.

  • Go2hell66

err wow… the bewbs were hella distracting

you’d think after all the anime and videogames i’ve played over the years i’d be over stuff like that by now :D

    • PoweredByHentai

What?  Be immune to boobs?  What blasphemy are you spouting, sir? :P

      • That’s the main reason SHE’s the news anchor. To help GET you to watch their news program. Not unlike real life to be honest. Most news programs will have an attractive face as their mouthpiece to pull in viewers, especially channel hoppers.

      • xavier axol

nope, so far the scientist haven’t uncover a cure for it, so guys should careful when approaching a girl with big boobs (those are lethal!!) .

        • PoweredByHentai

Girls with big boobs are not lethal.  It is girls with BREAST MISSILES that you want to watch out for.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

            BREASTOOO FIRE!!!!!

          • PoweredByHentai

            That’s a guy thing.  XD

        • There no need for tht. But they should hv cures for stalker and yanderes.

      • Go2hell66

lol not real bewbs, 2D/anime bewbs mind you :D

  • neocatzon

It’s nice to see a company spawning new IPs like this, many selection to choose from also it’s kinda refreshing after reboots and milkings.

    • Seriously, N1 needs new hits besides Disgaea being their only sales maker. I hope these new IPs turn out well for them AND are compelling enough to be brought over to be localized! :)

  • I did not expect this kind of opening….

    •  Just watched it & ;yeah, it was kinda segued in there huh? ;)
But this game looks to answer my ADV itch, and I like the concept of presenting “The Truth” in a news program. Hope NISA brings it over!

  • Alexander Aubert

excuse me everyone, i’m just wondering what is this IPs your talking about? Internet protocol?

  • Aoshi00

So many new VNs for Vita!  Time Travelers (which got a high score from Famitsu, not sure what that meant) and now Tokuhou… pre-ordering for the anchor lady, nah, the UFO :).. It would be a miracle if I could finish Robotics;Notes before the anime airs in 2-3 months.. this reminds me of Cave’s VN Instant Brain too, w/ very attractive char design, which I have yet to finish either :(.. would be nice to have some pre-order bonuses too…

    • z_merquise

Instant Brain? You mean the visual novel with . . . uh, attractive ladies?

I found that the artist behind the game draw a lot of hentai images. That could (partly) explain why the female characters in that game looked like that. Totally forgot the name of the artist though.

  • Ms Boobie looks quite lk Ms Mikami dontcha think? And its too distracting by being too big…..
My bet is on tht mysterious dude somehow involve w/h MIB. And occult is cool.

So you can apparently lie abt the cases eh? I wonder how will it affect the story. Like do you hv event played out differently? or will you get diff ending?

  • Nitraion

With news reader like that no wonder the TV news so popular XD
if the game played with some sort of Corpse party magic i confident NISA would
    bring this game overseas..

  • Darkrise

Heh, unlike the rest of you, I didn’t get distracted at all by the bewbs of the anchorwoman ( ̄ー ̄). I have finally attained immunity to big 2D breasts! Aside from that, I’m really interested in this, but I highly doubt that we’ll get it seeing as it’s pretty much a VN.

  • revenent hell

I realy realy want someone to pick up this game to be localised.
Im not in to Phoenix Wright games but this type of a game above is seriously to my liking.
I like a more serious/grim tone in “detective” like games,Phoenix W. games just come across as to comical for me to get in to it,but this one has a lovely creepy aspect I cant help but want to play..Its for the PSV oh if this gets a localised version I honestly will have to go buy one just for this

  • Wow this looks awesome! “Sigh” I really hope this VN gets localized. Also, does anyone know what the name of the song in the background was or who sings it. It sounded pro and I want it! =^_^=

  • Awesome! I really like this style of games, and I’m interested in the concept of being able to control the truth like that. Hey, there’s no right or wrong, right? :3

    I hope it does well.

    • Found evidence cheating ex boyfriend is a man whore. Found contradictory evidence saying he isn’t. Which evidence will you use?

Anchor Woman: Psh. That cheating sob is going to be shown as he really is.
*selects evidence showing ex-bf is a man whore*
      Anchor Woman: Mwahahaha!

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Is this a Vita Exclusive? I do not own one yet but if this comes to the States I would be tempted to pick it up.

    What a nice concept.

    • As of right now it is. Though that could change. Theoretically I think any current console could handle it PSEye for PS3. Kinect for Xbox. Camera on 3DS. And camera on WiiU. But it might not be on anything else seeing as it is a anniv title.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

That’s very true, I would not mind a 3DS release if it can graphically hold up…but a PS3 version would also be welcomed.

        • While the 3DS is definitely weaker than the Vita it isn’t that weak all things considered. But eh you never know. I kinda doubt it.

  • Göran Isacson

Man, after a logn string of SRPGS N1 seems to really be branching out into new IP’s… don’t know what to make of this new and exciting world. Except hope that it all turns out well, of course.

  • aoihana

I wasn’t expecting much, but the artwork drew me in, and I have to say that Special Investigation Division looks really interesting.

If being an supernatural investigator, looking into E.S.P.’s, poltergeists, and UFO’s doesn’t sound exciting enough already, the characters surely do. That’s what I love about it, honestly, the focus on the characters.

Of course, it’s expected due to the premise, but I just love character development, and this will have plenty of that. One of the characters that immediately snagged my attention was Kaede Watarai, who is obviously one of the more disturbed or troubled characters. (Abducted, really?! Awesome!)

The artwork and music in this trailer have me really excited, so I’ll have to add this to my list of games for when I get a Vita! (*≧m≦*)

  • artemisthemp

Now I just want a Localize of this game and I am ready to go

  • Juuu

I hope NISA takes a chance on bringing this over. If the small, runaway success stories of titles like Phoenix Wright and 999 are anything to go by, it’s that visual novels CAN succeed in the West, especially on handheld platforms, if marketed well. Plus, those games ALL involved mystery and problem solving, so I’m sure Special Investigation Division could find a similar audience and a special place in the hearts of fans of Ace Attorney, 999, Hotel Dusk, ect.

Plus…Well, there’s still that ongoing, nasty little myth that ALL visual novels are just “anime sex games,” which just kills me. There’s SO much more to the genre than eroge, and I truly believe in my heart that VNs can find some degree of niche success in the West, and titles like this just foster that hope. C’mon, NISA-if you can take a chance on Mugen Souls, take a chance on this! :] Or give it to Aksys. :P

  • The only mystery I see in this trailer is, if it’s possible that watermelons ca get even bigger ?

  • BadenBadenPrinny
  • Barrit

*SPOILERS* The UFOs are in her shirt.

  • Lisa Fraulein

“The twist is Special Investigation Division doesn’t have a “right” or “wrong” path, whatever you present the viewers is the truth.”
It’s scary how that also can be applied in this world…

  • Alexandra Cordes

NA release? You can’t blame me for wishing…

  • Simon Andersson

This game feels more like a Atlus game than a NIS game I mean it feels like I´m watching a Soul Hackers trailer. (Not complaining this game looks awsome).
