There’s A Little Bit Of Idolm@ster In Yakuza 5

While we’ve seen Haruka Sawamura in previous Yakuza titles, she’ll play an even bigger role in Yakuza 5 because she’s playable. Far from Okinawa, Haruka moved to Osaka and compete on an idol TV show. Yakuza 5 used this setting to create a rhythm mini-game and it looks like there are "heat" moves to do during Haruka’s dances.

Players will also have to manage Haruka’s schedule, show up to fan events, and answer questions for news reporters. Do well and you’ll appear on variety TV shows and get a shot at joining the Princess League.

Ugh, this is maybe not the direction Yakuza needs to go in. Unless maybe it’s some sort of commentary on the whole idol thing. Maybe she gets caught up in a scandal, and has to avoid getting manipulated by a shady, crooked manager. Or something. As long as it’s not just straight-up idol otaku pandering.

    • Leivinia

The game itself is just a cover; its real purpose is to expose the fact that yakuza are actually behind the entire idol industry.

    • noctis_nox

Shhh! Be quiet. I like it. :-P

    • mirumu

I was far more concerned about them adding zombies to the last game than this.

  • Muffum

Will she be able to bash thugs’ heads in regardless? Will she be able to do so while still dressed in idol clothing? Such information is vital.

  • Detrimont

she should be doing this to get closer to some opposing mob boss that has ties to the competition, that would be the only logical reason for this happening

  • Paradox me

Well, I can’t say I’m looking forward to that. A rhythm mini game I can live with, but scheduling and fan events are a bit too much idol for my taste.

Why couldn’t she be an aspiring mech pilot?

    • heartless141

if you don’t like it then i doubt you will have to do it more than once. twas the same for the hostess thing in Yakuza 4, welcome to do more, but once is enough

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

I’m pretty sure Haruka’s idol career is going to be major. Hodesses was just things you can do in your spare time. This seems to be pretty essential. Plus, you already know Yakuza are running it behind the scenes!

        • heartless141

i imagine it gonna be like trainin that karate kid. some guy gonna take care of it, but he wants your help.

  • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

Wow, they really are trying to cover all the bases with this one.

  • Nitraion

Ok we got Taxi driver, bear hunter, baseball player and an Idol…XD

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

……..and this game title is what here??? Ohh Yakuza.^^…….wait?

  • 4shiki

Her dress even looks like Snow Strawberry! (correct me on the name if I’m wrong, iM@S players)

    • http://vindictushots.tumblr.com/ Okuni-chan

      *gasp* It kinda does.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Hmm….. can i hope that all this idol thing main purpose is to get closed to some Yakuza who controls entertaintment industries there???

    I can dream right?right???T_T

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    *sniff sniff*

Oh Haruka, they grow up so fast

  • Juuu

It’s pathetic that I’m saying this, but SOLD. Idolmaster in my ANYTHING is good.

Will there be a crossover costume to make her look like Haruka Amami from Idolmaster? ;D

    • William Hsia

well if they do that, it would make much more sense if they give her iori costume…

    • Testsubject909

      So…

Idolmaster in Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls sequel?
Idolmaster in Shin Megami Tensei sequel?
      Idolmaster in Silent Hill remake?

edit: You may or may not insert a trollface here, if you’d like.

edit 2: Specifically SMT. Keep in mind buddies, Persona is Megami Ibunroku in reality, not SMT. SMT is itself it’s own series, an easy way to keep that in mind is that we’re pinning over getting SMT 4 and SMT 5.

      • RablaAndrews

        Shin Megami Tensei… *lightbulb*

Now introducing P4R: Persona 4 Rising Idol.
Play as Rise Kujikawa as she works her way back into the business after the events of Persona 4. Compete with other idols across Japan in order to become the nations most famous and win the heart of Yu-sempai.

By day, attend practices, lessons, etc.
By night, delve into a secret world inside the Radio known as ‘Recordia’, and fight Shadows in various rhythm minigames!

Coming soon for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

        • Testsubject909

I would like this if… it was correct.

I said Shin Megami Tensei, not Persona. Different series buddy, I know it’s marketed as SMT here in the west but in reality it’s not, it’s Megami Ibunroku.

I also didn’t specify Persona because, guess what? I thought of Rise as well, it’s just too easy with Persona.

SMT though. That’s apocalyptic reshaping of the world. How do you insert Idolmaster into that scenario?

          • Juuu

If AKB0048 can do apocolypse-idols, Imas can too. ;p Nothing is impossible!

      • Juuu

Thanks to this post, my life will not be complete until someone does a mod for Silent Hill that inserts Idolmaster characters. I hope you’re proud of what you’ve brought me to. D:

Also Idolmaster in the next Call of Duty? ;o

        • Testsubject909

Idolmaster would work in Silent Hill 3 and maybe Silent Hill 4.

How about Idolmaster in Gears of War?

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Hmmm… Japanese are going to get a Yakuza 1 & 2 HD collection and Yakuza 3 & 4 are both on the PS3. I could – and I will – add the series to my ever-growing gaming wishlist.

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

       Don’t forget Dead Souls ;)

      • Kevadu

No, forget Dead Souls.  Forget it ever happened.  You’re better off without it.

        • https://www.facebook.com/mike.degroodt Mike de Groodt

Some people like it some don’t.

no need to make a fuss.

        • Dantis

I thought Dead Souls was pretty great, actually.

The story wasn’t up to the series standards, but it was otherwise rather good.

    • XiaomuArisu

       Abou time!

  • Kai2591

    lol that’s a fun and cute mini-game :)

  • haku67

I can’t wait for this game. I just hope stuff doesn’t get cut from the US one like yakuza 3. American yakuza 2 had everything the japanese yakuza 2 had so its sad to see content be removed for later games.

    • mirumu

Yes, I’m still upset about those Yakuza 3 cuts. Thankfully all Yakuza 4 had cut was a heavily Japanese trivia game which would have been impossible to translate for a worldwide release in any meaningful way.

In this case the idol element is looking like a fairly significant element to the game. From a software development perspective I suspect it would actually be more effort to pull it out of the game than it would be to just translate it.

      • Testsubject909

And it’s not that hard to translate here.

It’s a Manager mini-game where you take on the duty of managing a pop star’s life (if translating it into the mentality of non-Japan-culture-savvy players)

  • http://twitter.com/curryricefrog curryrice

Can’t wait for its English release jajaja~

  • http://twitter.com/alixraen alixraen

Well if I didn’t have a reason to pick up this game, I do now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000172099718 Dominic Hunter

So THIS is what the Yakuza was all about: Dressing girls up in cute clothes!!!

  • XiaomuArisu

Nice but can we beat up bad guys with a little cute girl trained by Kazuma Kiryu?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Sweet little Haruka — all grown up and quite the b*llbreaker?

      • XiaomuArisu

         I hope so!XD
        The little dragon of Dojima!

    • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

Haruka doesn’t fight or partake in mini-games (gambling) as she’s a minor. The idol bits are her campaign.

  • Göran Isacson

See, I’ve seen these taxi driver minigames, these bear hunting minigames and now an idol minigame and I have to admit that I can’t quite see how they all fit together narratively. I mean, are they all just little insights into these characters daily lives with no connection to the overall Yakuza-themed plot? Or do they actually have something to add to the main story, because right now they seem so diverse that I can’t see how it all fits together.

    • Testsubject909

Probably just little bits pertaining to their daily lives.

    • amagidyne

I wouldn’t put it past them to have it directly influence the story. Maybe her debut single will be called “LOVE★ORGANIZED CRIME” or something.

  • RablaAndrews

Well okay Yakuza, you’ve finally done it. You’ve got my attention.

Do I need to play 1-4 to play this one and if so what do I need to play those?

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I only played 4 and Dead Souls, and I just enjoyed them as the games they are. There is a “Reminisce” feature in Y4 that I think explains what happens in Yakuza up til 4, I think.

      • RablaAndrews

        Righto, I’ll check it out

  • KOTheWorld

I shed tears when I saw the second screenshot….the global influence of pantyhose has affected even Haruka :(
