Time And Eternity’s Battle System Has Quick Time Event Finishing Moves

By Spencer . July 18, 2012 . 3:42am

tokitowa8Famitsu has a few tidbits on Time and Eternity: Toki Towa. The PlayStation 3 RPG begins when Princess Towa’s wedding ceremony is interrupted before she can kiss her fiancé and tie the knot. Makimona, a fortune teller with long purple hair, predicts this, but it’s too late.

Someone awakens Princess Toki’s aggressive (knife wielding) personality Towa during her wedding. In battle, players will be able to switch between Toki who uses long range attacks and Towa who is melee fighter.

Similar to Final Fantasy VII, you can do extra damage if you press the circle button at the right time. When it appears over an enemy’s head you can do a todame or finishing move called a Final Blow Attack.

Time and Eternity: Toki Towa is slated for release on October 11. Namco Bandai is planning to release a limited edition with a soundtrack CD, voice drama CD, 48 page art book, and a code to download 11 custom themes.

  • Don’tcha mean “Similair to Final Fantasy VIII”?

As I recall the “Trigger” was implemented in that game.

  • LustEnvy

Came here for battle screens or a vid… all I received was one free disappoint.

  • All I want is gameplay footage, Imageepoch…. Is that too much to ask???

    • Guest

Apparently yes. You’re just supposed to buy things blindly these days based on hype alone.

      • LynxAmali

I bought Gunbuster for the PS2 based on hype alone that they were even making a Gunbuster game.

        Bought it blind.

        Greatest. Blind. Purchase. Ever.

And licensed anime games usually stink, let alone licensed mecha anime games from the early to mid 2000s. (Godannar, Aquarion, Fafner PSP, RahXephon all come to mind.)

        Hopefully this turns out good.

        • Guest

Other than myself, you’re the only one I know thats bought that game.
Besides, its freakin Gunbuster man…thats a classic Its one of the few anime where you actually learned something (Initial D being the other).
And its weird that you say licenced Anime usually stink and you listed Rahxephon, which to me, played VERY similar to Gunbuster PS2 (point & click 3D mini sandbox adventure game with Zone of Enders style battles).

Anyways, the point is, we shouldn’t HAVE to be forced to buy things blindly. If a developer makes a trailer, they shouldnt feel the need to ‘hide’ the game to anyone or sucker anyone into it and pad it with marketing fluff if they believe in their work.

That said, I got stuck in Gunbuster at that point where you were in the Gunbuster and were battling all those alien spaceships and there comes a point where you’re about to get squashed by one like a burger between two buns.
How do you beat that level?

          • LynxAmali

If that’s the one I’m thinking of, I always make sure I get a few correct timings off in the event. Then you just leave it.

If you miss more than one, the rate drops faster.

Unless you’re referring to the portion where you have to protect the Exelion, in which case, you should only aim for one correct time event. Because if you miss it, it’ll drop drastically.

Happen to have the Scenario number out of curosity? I’d need to double check to make sure.

  • frokenok3

That’s cool! Like everbody else i can’t wait to see it live and i am pretty sure we will soon & if that LE is in a logical price then i’m importing that! :D

  • Herok♞

Maybe next time an article comes it will finally have screens.

  • Xapth

I totally clicked all hyped up, ready to finally see some gameplay videos in action,
and all I see are words…

…It would have been perfect timing with the announcement of the release date.

I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, considering Sol Trigger’s gameplay looks awesome, but gameplay footage wouldn’t hurt…

  • DanijoEX

I would appreciate for at least…one…video.

    But what can you do…

  • Paradox me

I’m really surprised by the amount of hype this game has relative to the info released so far. We’ve got an animated trailer, the promise of nice in-game visuals, 2 seconds of gameplay, a release date (complete with LE) and already people are talking pre-orders and localization.

They’re going to have to show me something before this is even on my radar. I’m not terribly fond of the character designs, so hopefully this elusive gameplay is worth the fuss.

    • Godmars

Sadly, that’s how hungry people are for actual, honest, JRPGs on the PS3 or an HD game system – they want it to the point they’ll even delude themselves to it quality.

Not saying this one will likely be bad, but I feel bad in hoping this will at least be as good as a PS1 era title like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears or Wild Arms. Nevermind if it justifies being on the PS3, if that makes sense.

  • Go2hell66

geez the video footage on this game is scarce…
calling it now, we won’t see any actual gameplay until this game gets released

  • malek86

Oh boy, I hated this in FF8. It made grinding much more annoying. And at least in FF8 you shouldn’t have grinded at all, but what can I say, I must have been a masochist back then. Or I just didn’t know any better.

    • Daniel.S.Z Bhadurkhan

Really, you hated a timed button press that if you wanted could have left automatic, wow, thats just……..odd if you ask me, its not like it initiated some kind of God of war QTE, it was just a time button press with NO PROMPT unless it was during a limit break, and seven had that too if we talk limit breaks, tifas attacks where basically QTE’s

      • malek86

        There’s a reason I didn’t like using Tifa.

  • Mago Iichi

It wasn’t FFVII that had that, it was FFVIII.

and I freaking hate quick time events no matter what game has it.

    • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

And it was the R1 button to trigger.

      • Daniel.S.Z Bhadurkhan

I think what the author meant was both games have a timed button press to increase damage, doesnt really matter which button, relax people.

    • Daniel.S.Z Bhadurkhan

you know tifas limit breaks were basically QTE’s  right?

      • Mago Iichi

You don’t know that I didn’t use Tifa, unless forced right?

  • cj_iwakura

Game’s a text adventure with still images, calling it now.

  • I’m going to be positive on the issue about the gameplay. lol

What if the gameplay is so great that they are saving us by not showing us until the game is released because our fragile minds would explode from all the awesome? =P

The game isn’t  going to be released until October so there is still time for them to put out some great trailers. If this is a marketing strategy then they’ve done a great job because everyone who knows about the game (Including Myself) are anticipating to see the gameplay is going to be like.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, i am not really a fan of QTA here but if they could make each characters finishing move with a different QTA, i will be happy here.^^

After all, for someone who have played all Shadow Hearts series which requires you to press perfectly on each rings even if it is only normal attack, this should not be a problem lol.^^

    • Nitraion

If there is RPG with minigame to attack like shadow heart again i would be pleased to play it XD

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Indeed.^^ However, i can pictured how gamers will be able to accept them there.

As, some gamers will probably just complained that the game is very repititve there lol.

Maybe, some of old gamers like us previously had too much time that we feels that the game is masterpiece there even though the “Judgement Ring” is a bit repititve there.^^

Anyway, the chances for Shadow Hearts series to continue again is 0% here considering the company fall into bankrupt there.T_T And here, i thought i will be able to play as the “Gold Bat” lol.^^

        • Nitraion

TBH i like if shadow hearts enemy is more harder…
Shadow hearts 1 was hard but the animation still crappy…
Shadow heart 2 and 3 is amazing but the enemy is soo easy XD
and what i like for shadow hearts 2&3 is how the char get the skill soo unique XD,SH1 still traditional level up get skill though
anyway back to article I always welcomed RPG for ps3 my this is will be first imagepooch game i played…

      • Rhayve

The Legend of Dragoon, if you never played it, now’s the time.

        • Nitraion

Well i play it and downloaded on PSN but i like shadow hearts series more….
LoD just too stiff in my opinion……Lol i’m so picky XD

  • Jonathan Keycross

“Everyone, listen to me! I´m a fortune teller and I had a vision. This wedding is going to be…!”

*Enemy attacks, the prince is injured and Toki turns into a yandere*

    “…forget it…”

As long as it´s only an option, I don´t see a problem. My rpg experience is not that varied so by the description I guess the combat will be similar to Mario RPG only that with an additional overkill mechanic.

    • Guest

Mario was turn based. This isnt

      • Jonathan Keycross

Really? The way the article referenced FFVII confused me then.

  • ArtIristic

One of the reasons that I’m for this game is because of the animated style. I’m just so attracted by attracted by hand drawn animation, and I also like the character designs too, but im sad to see that I once again is left without a new trailer to see more of it. I can’t say much about the gameplay, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

  • zferolie

This game looks really cool in screenshots… but are there any of it in motion? I don’t mean of the animated cut scenes, but of the battles and running around in the world.

  • Maybe they plan to reveal the battle screen when release date comes by??? Or are they still adjusting the game??

  • They must have little confidence in how their gameplay looks.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the animation and gameplay looked all clunky and blargh, but they better be some kind of saving grace because nothing else about the game sounds promising.

  • At this point, if they really don’t want to show gameplay I am just going to think of it as an anime version of Dragon’s Lair.

  • artemisthemp

Hope, who ever public Toki to Towa in EU/US will bring those 11 theme’s to us :P

people should stop whining about why there is no gameplay..
sure i too want to see how the battle system looks but please do remember that this isn’t the only game imageepoch is working on.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Hun that doesn’t excuse that fact they are releasing a game without showing any gameplay at all. Its like blinding buying a game then it turns out pretty bad.

    • It’s the only PS3 game Imageepoch, which I assume there is a separate team for it, is working on at the moment and it’s coming out three months from now….

They are planning to update the official site soon (according to the official twitter) since there is still things like Story, guide, battle, special that are locked out.. and with only three months lefd i guess they update that next.:P

    • Guest

This doesnt make any sense. Especially since the developer was bragging about how amazing the game looks in motion months ago when he showed it to some famous animation studio heads

  • I don’t really care about all the details in mechanics and gameplay of TokiTowa right now. The one thing I really care towards this game is its western release… :))) Hope for Ghostlight to bring it over to Europe, or NISA/Aksys/Xseed in NA.

    • Namco Bandai are publishing it in Japan, so it is safe to assume that they will be the ones bringing over any western localization.

      • LynxAmali

        Bandai bringing it over?

R.I.P any chances of localization without massive amounts of begging.

        • Well, they did bring over Graces f, One Piece: Pirate Warriors, Ni no Kuni is coming (in 2013) and Xillia will be coming too. So, it isn’t all too bad.

This game will probably make it harder for itself without releasing any gameplay footage before any localization takes place. Though Imageepoch are trying to get the game localized.

  • Kitestwinblades

If it requires a fair bit of precision, I’m down. I love things like Just attacks, Timed attacks. For fighting games and even RPG’s Like paper mario. Don’t even get me started with multibounce in the first Paper mario. That game is filled with them XD

I also really like the trigger in VIII but I have to admit- I wouldn’t mind seeing how that actually “looks/works” xD (Timed explosion or implied shot? lol) About the only clue we have to compare is Haru from Ravemaster with Explosion. Pretty much as close as it gets lol.

r.r; Now I just have to SEE this in action during the game.

  • Lazulis

Man, I just can’t get hyped up for this game without a gameplay video…

    • Yeah, there haven’t been enough of those, especially now that there’s a release date.

  • You mean Final Fantasy VIII Spencer? :o

  • That’s awesome! I love that Paper Mario-style combat, where you have to enter commands correctly to attack and defend properly. It makes turn-based RPG’s a thousand times more engaging when you’re fighting, as opposed to the typical mashing of the “X” or “A” button!

  • Adding a little bit of extra thought back in to the mix. Sounds like it’ll make a very entertaining game indeed.

  • Göran Isacson

Did they actually just talk about GAMEPLAY? In a Time and Eternity post? FETCH ME MY SMELLING VAPORS.

So useless sarcasm aside, I must say that I kinda like games with timing aspects in them, like the Superstar saga games, and I hope this game can capture their spirit and entertainment factor.

  • yalissa

Normally companies reveal TOO much gameplay.
Now it just feels weird not getting any gameplay at all.
