First Look At Yakuza’s HD Makeover

By Spencer . July 19, 2012 . 1:33am

Sega is polishing Yakuza and the PlayStation 2 sequel Yakuza 2 with upscaled visuals. Both games will uppercut PlayStation 3 on November 1 as Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition.

Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition hasn’t been announced for North America, but Sega might be able to re-release both Yakuza games as digital downloads. They’re already localized and I suppose this would be a chance for Western gamers to play Yakuza with the original voice acting too.

I hope they release them in North America…I own both but for some reason the copy of Yakuza 2 I have that I bought used doesn’t like loading new areas, it often freezes…and I didn’t find this out until after it was too late to return it (since I took my time playing Yakuza 1 and a few other PS2 games I bought at the same time)

I had the exact same problem! I ended up re-buying a copy for cheap and the second one worked fine. Maybe they had some kind of mfg. problem.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Retail…download…however they want, I’ll take it. I just want this in America!

    • colorblindnightmare

i agree, Ryu ga gotoko (yakuza) is one of my favorite game series, i’ll take it how i can get it

  • Keitaro004

Hope it’ll have the JP voices, if they release it over here. Brought the first one at gamestop some months ago and the english voice acting for realistic japanese characters were so… disturbing.

    • http://twitter.com/reson8er Dan Knowles

Agreed, but the one bright spot in that DUB’s mess was Mark Hammil.

      • Keitaro004

Indeed. I wouldn’t have so much trouble with it if they lip-synced it

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Oh how I miss Kazuma’s old look…

Could use a better name. For example, Yakuza: Golden, Yakuza: Origins, Yakuza: Do You Remember 2006.

    • Nitraion

      Haha i choose Yakuza:origins

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

SEGA fans still remember 2006… but that wasn’t Yakuza related.

        bitter Sonic fans…

“Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition hasn’t been announced for North America, but Sega might be able to re-release both Yakuza games as digital downloads.”

Don’t give them any ideas.  This has a good chance at coming over here regardless, don’t want to get the idea of digital download only put into their head if they happen to come here and see this.

But, better Digital than nothing, no? The series here, as much as I love it, is niche at best. If they are choosing to not bring it here because a physical release would be cost prohibitive, then bring on the digital goods. Yakuza 2 was my favorite in the series, I’d gladly buy them however they are released.

      • British_Otaku

Digital has a smaller reach as far as consumers go, cannot be purchased when the online system goes down and the franchise isn’t “that” niche.

At least from SEGA’s perspective Yakuza 3 did great despite the amount of complaints due to removed side-tasks and missions: http://www.1up.com/news/initial-sales-yakuza-3-west

        • Nemesis_Dawn

But oddly, Yakuza 4, which wasn’t all cut up to hell and back, sold less than Yakuza 3. Sega is watching these type of things right now, after their recent announcement that pretty much anything that isn’t Sonic or Aliens related has very little chance of getting localized. We’re lucky Anarchy Reigns is even still getting released, at this point.

          • British_Otaku

Do we have a source besides VGChartz indicating Yakuza 4 not meeting sales standards? I guess I could say Yakuza Kenzan not coming was proof, but I’m not convinced till I hear it from SEGA. That or I’m in denial and don’t want to see SEGA get out of the habit of localising good franchises.

I guess at this point, like you said, anything coming from SEGA which isn’t Sonic or Aliens is a push.

          • Nemesis_Dawn

Believe me when I say that I hope I am wrong on this, because the Yakuza franchise is one of my absolute favorite franchises. But everything I’ve read over the last six months points to a different Sega that doesn’t care about localizing anything anymore, so if the only way they can give it to us is through a digital download, I’ll take it.

        • http://twitter.com/reson8er Dan Knowles

I agree, but in the end, any release is still better than no release. I just hope they come out to the west.

      • Hraesvelgr

There are tons of people that think digital is worse than not releasing it all. Personally, I’m not one of them, but they exist and several of them post fairly regularly here.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

Those people are selfish and foolish.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

I wouldn’t say this has a good chance, anymore, after the most recent changes in Sega’s structure and business goals. They’re not the same company they were a year ago. I would rather they get the idea to release it digitally, if before that, they were thinking, “Well, the Yakuza series doesn’t sell as well as the Sonic games,” and thinking of not releasing it, at all, which seems to be their current mindset with everything.

Unfortunately, the Yakuza HD collection (along with Okami) might a have very LARGE save files which would take hours upon hour and you’re unable to continue download while your playing a game on the same PS3 but this is especially bad for those with limited wi-fi broadband (25.6GB a month and the battery drained after an hour or two).

Yakuza’s on the rise and gaining more popularity slowly but surely, while Sonic just barely made it out with Generation from all the bad games from the past 10 years so logically Sonic should be put to rest for a while for the next 3-4 years. Sonic’s also a lame character anyway not like Kazuma Kiryu.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

First, the only time that the PS3 stops downloading while you’re playing is online games. When I’m playing a single player title, I never have this problem. Ever. The only time it ever puts downloads on pending is when I play something with online multiplayer.

And I don’t know where you are located, but my PS3 will download a gig in about 15 minutes. I have quite a few full retail games on my HDD (Borderlands, Dante’s Inferno, Catherine) and I just upgraded to a 1T drive so I can download even more. Of course, I’m using a wired connection, so maybe that makes a difference.

And as for Sonic, that’s not me saying it. It’s Sega. Look it up. They said that they were going to stop focusing on franchises in the West that weren’t Sonic, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and some other PC franchise. They did say they were open to increasing the number of their digital downloads, though. So, if it’s digital or no release, I say digital!

  • TheInternetNomad

I need my crappy english dub for the first or no play!

  • Yuri

I have been waiting for ages for a proper Yakuza bundle and have yet to purchase any title on the PS3. I hope they bundle all the games together in one awesome sauce box for me to purchase.
