Final Fantasy Versus XIII Not Canceled, Says Square Enix CEO

By Spencer . July 23, 2012 . 10:48pm

imageSquare Enix CEO Yoichi Wada dismissed the rumor that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been canceled over Twitter.

"Someone has been spreading a false rumor that Versus has been canceled, it seems," Wada tweeted. "[Laughs.] Just now, we finished our regular Versus meeting. If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet."

Great to know that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still around. Now, to play the waiting game for that city footage…

Not cancelled, but still MIA. I didn’t buy the rumor or anything, but I do agree with the general consensus that it’s high time we finally got some concrete info on the game. Let’s hope for TGS or a surprise around the anniversary conference at the end of August.

  • Andar

It’s a shame to know that there are people spreading false rumors. But it’s good to see Wada throwing us a bone here.

    • Nozomi

Nah, it’s not really a shame. It put Versus back in the spotlight. The internet uproar that resulted from the rumor shows how many of us are still waiting for the game.

    • It sure took him a while like 2 days maybe 3?

      • LightZero

That is how business works. They don’t always have the time to cater to every customer’s whims. Just be grateful he ended this nonsense as quickly as possible

        • I suppose. But this was a HUGE deal. There was a major outcry because of it. It could have been responded to sooner even with the other stuff. I mean really how long does it take to write “Don’t worry about the rumours they are lies. It’s still coming.” Took me like a minute.

          • Solomon_Kano

It probably did take you “like a minute”, but then you’re not the CEO of a major international video game development and publishing company with much bigger things to do at any given moment.

Mind you this rumor started on an American website. I can’t imagine that Wada keeps his ear to what’s going on with the internet outside of Japan.

          • I suppose I didn’t take into account that it was a US site and that he probably isn’t constantly monitoring sites for things like this. But it probably did only take him about a minute to write it when he actually did get around to it. But also what does a CEO even really have to do. They are the big boss they sit around telling people what to do while they rake in the cash for sitting around. Or at least that is how I have ALWAYS viewed ANY CEO from ANY company.

          • As someone who works in a large company and has been involved in speaking for the company during a small crisis, let me tell you a bit of the process of getting a message out to the public:

            1) Realize there’s a need for this message.
            2) Contact marketing because of this need.
            3) Wait for marketing (or whoever is choosing to do so) to draft a response that goes to the public.
            4) Send the response to legal for vetting to make sure it is okay to say.
            5) Check the response to ensure that no NDA’s are broken.
            6) Verify and relay the response.

Companies are like ships. The larger the company is, the slower this process goes. In a smaller company, you can just email someone at the top, “can you check this?” When you have a large company, like with Square Enix, you need to check with more departments, and since this happened just before the weekend, it was fairly late coming on it.

In this case, it’s also VERY likely that someone in marketing or legal had the idea of having Wada himself tweet it, or Wada volunteered to tweet a response. There is absolutely no way that relevant departments of the company didn’t know he was doing it before he did it, though.

If a company is publicly traded, they need to check with shareholders and reassure THEM first, because- while the customer base is important, shareholders are also EXTREMELY important, since it’s THEIR money that the company is running on for the most part.

          • That seems completely retarded. He’s the head he should be able to do what he wants when he wants and besides this was a simple thing and not breaking anything by saying “Yah we are continuing it.”

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, CEOs do quite a bit more than simply sit around raking in money. Especially for a company as expansive as SE, Wada has a lot of people that he has to oversee and keep in contact with so he can relay information back to shareholders and other stuff. Surely, you’ve heard of Nintendo’s Iwata Asks columns right? That’s just one level on which that particular CEO is involved with the company. In addition to the business stuff he has to do, Iwata also takes the time out to communicate with creators and fans. So, yea, most CEOs actually do something.

          • I was never really interested in the Iwata Asks I knew of their existence though

  • Where did Yoichi Wada get his sources from?
    Could we trust him?
    Just joking.

    This is me waiting Versus

    • Suikoden!!!! :D

    • That’s funny if you think about what happens in the game. xD

Well, I guess he did technically come back…

  • LustEnvy

I’m going to venture a guess and say that this is going to be Square-Enix’s PS3 swan song when it finally comes out.

  • Derek E Nay

I believe Kotaku made the rumor for more clicks.  They were the first to have the story up, and when I saw it they did not give any sources. (Kotaku does like to do that, but I still go there from time to time.)

    • d19xx

Same. At least they were able to goad Squeenix for an update. :D

    • Sakurazaki

Or maybe SE told Kotaku to raise hype for the game after all this inactivity!

      Oh, the conspiracy!

  • neogeno

Of course it wasn’t cancelled…the announcement served as quite the buzz generator.

  • *sigh of relief*

  • phew … thank god … so we will be seeing the city at TGS i presume ??

    • Possibly. I wouldn’t expect anything.

      • I Hope so … my heart can’t handle this anymore … :(

        • You would think that after how long has it be 3 years? Whatever whenever they showed that trailer thingy at E3 that they’d have at least another scene to show. lol Seriously.

          • Solomon_Kano

A year and some months. The last time we saw the game was January 2011, completely with gameplay and voice acting and no release date lol. Still a long time ago, but definitely not 3 years.

          • Oh? My sense of time is messed up you’ll have to forgive me. A year And some months though should. E enough time to show something.

          • Solomon_Kano

You’d think so, but then Nomura is the master of telling without showing. If they miss TGS again though, it might as well have been 3 years.

          • Wada is evil. It’s no wonder that people dislike him. But srsly I thought it was 3 years. xD

  • DuskSharkEX

Again, it’s silly for one to flip their lid over a rumor.

  • Abel.exe

Haha I knew it! Now if they just show some new videos, I’ll be ready to wait another year if necessary.

  • Luna Kazemaru

And I’m sure all of you that believe it are feeling dumb as bricks right now right?

    • Muffum

As one who didn’t care about the rumor one way or another: Is it really necessary to defame and mock those who believed it? Your actions are indicative of someone who was in petty denial of the rumor and is now lording their superiority as a result. A simple “I knew it wasn’t canceled” would have sufficed, really.

      • Luna Kazemaru

Clearly I didn’t believe it because where it came from (kotaku) I mean come on. I don’t think i have some superiority over the fact I don’t trust that site ( don’t see why anyone would believe that site in the first place). Sorry I don’t censor myself for bleeding hearts.

        • Muffum

Given that you called anyone who believed it “dumb ass bricks” and basically laughed at them… What would one call that, other than lording supposed superiority?

          • Luna Kazemaru

Yeah I did laughed at them because they believe a silly rumor form a not so credible site and nothing to back up what they said. If I was doing so in what you said I could have went all kid like as the people who wanted to go off burning SE with a stake over this rumor but Kotaku got what they wanted in the end and showed that people honestly eat up everything.

        • Repede91

If I had known this rumor originated from Kotaku I wouldn’t have believed it.

But I only saw mention of it here and 1up, it also seemed very likely. Given that I went on to believe the rumor was more than likely true.

          • Luna Kazemaru

Which I will add to this saying the more bearable sites even posted on this whole rumor and didn’t even check up on it which added to the madness

  • Seven Infinity

Then suddenly they announce that SE will release this game at the end of year for Japan and coming to NA at January 2013.

  • scratchbach

Never believed it was cancelled, but it’s still hard for me not to feel at least a little relieved by hearing it officially.

  • XypherCode

    Yay! :D

  • LightZero

Good it as I said. The rumor was BS and Kotaku only did that to get hits. I can only hope the gullible learn their lesson of not believing everything they hear.

    • That goes for more than just this rumour too. j/s

  • Guest

Kotaku’s site should be hacked and destroyed

    • Well… that’s a little extreme. :I

    • M’iau M’iaut

They shall be eating plenty of crow in the morning, cowcow. Let’s leave the extreme comments on Kotaku or IGN where they belong.

    • Z3

      Let’s call Anonymous!!!

  • There~! It’s done. We’ve killed it, and now the rumour can bury itself six feet under. Thank you, Wada, for addressing this.

Anyway, I’m going to spend a good ten minutes laughing about this now. Brb.

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEET. That’s beauty to my ears.

Wow… city eh? I’ll jump on the PS3 bandwagon very soon just to see and experience the “city”

  • Alright SE…Your destruction at the hands of Godzilla will be calmed. However…Kotaku, your ass isn’t out of the radioactive fog yet. You have some serious explaining to do.

What happened to those “reliable sources” huh? Bullshit at its finest.

Still, this is great news. Now then…Superman! Get your ass flying and fast forward time! And DONT you dare back talk or else I will get Doomsday to tame that ass again. You know you don’t want a second film of that beatdown, I can assure you.

  • I don’t know who should I trust… A kotaku rumour or a CEO who made FF13 which left a bitter taste in my mouth….

    I’ll wait for TGS…

    • M’iau M’iaut

There’s a point to be made that any publicity is good publicity in letting the rumor continue to fester.

It’s also worth noting that if this game is indeed to be the PS3s thank you fans, or the PS4s launch title, Square PR should have more to show than grainy 6 year old vids.

      • The damage will be unimaginable if they screw up the publicity or promises…

      •  vXIII as PS4 launch title? I think not, cause PS3 age is only 4-5yrs old and consoles should have reach at least 10years, heck Sony spend so much money  in just creating the processor of PS3 and the PS3 console didn’t sold as much as it’s predecessor(PSX, PS2), so it’s not wise for Sony to make another console such as PS4 and I think they should at least wait 2-3years before releasing a next generation console

    • Solomon_Kano

Someone who spread a rumor… or the head of the company that’s actually making the game. Whether you liked 13 or not doesn’t affect Wada’s credibility. I didn’t like 13 either (not that he was responsible for that anyway…), but he’s still the most credible source apart from Nomura himself.

      • It’s not the game existence I’m worried about… It’s that I’m being reminded of FF13 cut content once I hear Wada’s name on it….

        • Solomon_Kano

Eh, well you did say trust. As for cut content, that’s up in the air. Wada’s still president, but Nomura has yet to have a game with DLC — and he certainly could’ve done it for Birth by Sleep. I don’t think we’ll have to worry about that here.

Besides, after this long, any cut content probably wouldn’t be out for an additional 4 years anyway lol.

          • “Nomura has yet to have a game with DLC — and he certainly could’ve done it for Birth by Sleep.”

But then again, he could release a “remix” version after the game was released lol…..

          • Solomon_Kano

            True lol.

    • Ethan_Twain

I don’t understand why how much you like Mr. Wada’s recent products should have anything to do with how much you trust the man.  Trustworthy until proven otherwise, I say.

      • Solomon_Kano

Especially considering the fact that Wada himself is no game developer.

      • It’s PR in business…

Customers like the products, they trust how they do business… Customers don’t like the products, they probably wouldn’t come back to do business… Simple as that…

  • J

I’m happy since I love where this game is going, but if they keep us in the dark like this much longer, the game might as well not exist at all.

  • Astrid Huang

I’m still not excited about this.. It doesn’t change the fact that there has not been any official news/trailers of versus since January 2011.

This should teach SE that they shouldn’t hide anymore progress from us. At least they should update us at least once every 2-3 months. So that we’ll know the game is still in development.

I will only get excited if they allow us to take a peek of that amazing city Wada was talking about.

Please don’t tell me Noctis changes clothes again…

  • badmoogle

Kotaku got the hits they wanted and they couldn’t care less about what you think of them.
    Mission accomplished.

  • Chris Choi

  • Bakuryukun

I called it. It was pretty obviously a baseless rumour that kotaku pulled out of nowhere.

  •  Ok. So… Let’s wait for another six year.

  • Detrimont

    stupid Kotaku

    • Godmars

Sad thing is while sensationalist things like this only ruins the site’s value as a news source, it likely gave them the traffic that will only make them do it again.

Aaaand it was a rumor after all, i am honestly glad its not cancelled since the game
    looks really interesting :P

    • Rohan Viajar

well it did say “rumor” in the kotaku page. I don’t know why people were taking it seriously. especially other gaming websites like ign. (completely twisted the article from kotaku and blatantly said that it was cancelled)

  • Lisa Fraulein

“If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet.” That’s…that’s sounds like another teaser to me… TT^TT
But seriously, I’m glad it’s just a rumour.

  • Godmars

I’ll care when I see it on a shelf. Maybe.

  • Solomon_Kano

As I said, there was no sense in putting stock in that report as it wasn’t the first time the game had been rumored to be cancelled. That coming from Kotaku didn’t make it any more or less credible in my eyes and, apparently, I was right in thinking so.

So, y’know, don’t believe everything you hear unless it’s from the horse’s mouth.

Now back to hoping the game shows at TGS.

  • Ricewarrior

“If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet.”

It’s going to have to be something extremely epic like being able to transform into a giant battle robot to fight the old gods from the Cthulhu mythos in outer space to sweep me off my feet. 7 years of waiting really brings down the hype to near non-existent.

    • By chance, that’s exactly what it is.  Oh but you forgot that there is a hyper space chase scene and they travel to another galaxy, all the way into a solar system and down on to a planets surface.  All in real time.

      • theoriginaled

        with quicktime events *ducks*

  • d19xx

I wouldn’t mind if they remake Type-0 for consoles and called it versus-xiii.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Why wouldn’t they just call it… Type-0?

Considering people have seen Versus already, that wouldn’t really be good for them.

  • WingsOfEternity

Yep all part of Kotaku’s plan to get an update on vXIII

  • Showmeyomoves

I hope we all learned something from this.

    • Sakurazaki

      The death of journalism?

  • Rohan Viajar

I think they should just name the game into final fantasy XV. because XIII mostly revolves around lightning now. and I hear they’re getting a third game (XIII-3)

so might as well make this XV since the game is taking a really long time to develop.
    but meh.

  • fayt255

Well I’m just happy FF Versus XIII is still coming, someday anyway at least.

  • kool_cid414

    Knew it

  • Sakurazaki

You guys should have been suspicious the moment Kotaku never gave us links to these “reliable sources”.

  • I don’t know if I should be happy or thankful about Kotaku teasing SE into speaking out a little info or update about the game…

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

  • Raze

Woohoo!!! and i thought i am waiting for nothing :D

  • Go2hell66

lol @ kotaku, Knew it was BS, called it

  • I knew it. I was right all along. All those who believe it can form a link in front of me and kiss my feet.

Seriously though, the problem that announced it too early. I can imagine Wada’s implying that the city (Noctis’ kingdom?) in Versus XIII is as big Liberty in GTA IV and the world outside it as big as Skyrim.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

And once again this news just prove that Kotaku loves creating sensation with any bad news lol.

Hope that next time, gamer will not jump so fast to the hate wagon here and tries to looks for more information first.

  • Freud_Hater

Good stuff. Wouldn’t been bad to cancel the only SE game I’m honestly interested in…

  • IshimaruKaito

i just hope the game is actually GOOD! ( not tht im saying its not going to be) but if its taking them this long i want a good story good battle system and a spectacular ending….thats all lol

  • Masengan

I am a bit excited, it’s like a more realistic Kingdom Hearts when it comes to game play.

  • xavier axol

damn it!! shame on you kotaku, but at least you got square to talk about versus.

  • sunK1D

Considering SE has gone down hill, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wada-san doesn’t know wtf is going on these days.

    • Bhunivelze

I don’t see how they have gone downhill if they are making a profit. It’s just the fans who have gone downhill imo. XD And to think the CEO doesn’t know the status of games in production is really dumb.

      • LightZero

Indeed it’s foolish to even say that the CEO of SE wouldn’t know about the production of his own games let alone the budget. His jobs is to keep SE in business and please shareholders. If he wasn’t producing results they would had fired his ass. Some fans need stop trying too hard in being cynical. I don’t like some of the things they done but I wouldn’t go as far as that.

  • LaserVision

Not only that, Wada also just confirmed Final Fantasy Versus XIII-2 as a Playstation 5 exclusive! Aww yeah!

  • Xapth

And this is why I left Kotaku and came to the amazing community here.

    • Syltique

Honestly, it makes you wonder what the point of this rumor was.  Kotaku trolled XIII for years.  They started the Tomb Raider controversy, and the Hitman controversy.  Fahey at Kotaku started the uproar about XIII-2’s OST, and probably directly lead to the vocals being deleted for the NA release of Invisible Invaders in XIII-2. And now they started the Versus XIII controversy that dropped their stock 3% in the last few days.

It’s really getting ridiculous.  And people scoff at me when I say that the biggest problem Japanese games have is the media.

    • Alexandra Cordes

      Same. :D

  • xavier axol

i learned a valuable lesson after all this mess and that is, if you wanna force a developer to talk about their game….

spread the rumor of it’s cancellation. but that doesn’t matter, versus is back baby!!

  • leadintea

So how does it feel, Siliconera? Giving hits to Trolltaku?

  • No9

    YES! Thank God. Lol.

  • Enigma_XIV

Wow, Kotaku must feel pretty stupid…

    • theoriginaled

That would be like saying a tabloid feels stupid for reporting about the Queen of England’s alien baby.

      • Wait what? lol xD This sounds interesting. The Queen with an alien. lol

    • MrRobbyM

They’re probably all in their office shouting “Mission complete!”

  • komiko12

    He said about regular meetings…
That means they are checking upon Versus on a regular basis.

Now let’s spend the time by playing other games.
I still think they will release it after some more time.

  • Syltique

Called it.  They weren’t going to cancel this.  They rebuilt XIV in 2 years flawlessly.  They finished FFXII when the director left half way through development.  They finished The Last Remnant even though Unreal Engine was giving them trouble because of poor support at the beginning of this gen.

SQEX has been doing extremely well lately, and they are poised to really blow everyone away very soon.  FF 25th Anniversary has the potential to be huge.

    FF Versus XIII
    FFX HD Remix
    FFXIV 2.0
    Type-0 (Vita)

And those are just the ones that we’ve heard about, that are likely.  For all we know, they could also be working on:

    FFV Remake (3DS)
    Unannounced FF titles for Vita

    • xavier axol

is almost as if you could see the future, minus the whole (i can’t believe square would actually make such a smart decisions). sadly it’s too good to be true and the fact that it makes sence, makes it much less believable. i can’t trust square until it delivers, it could happen (but it seems like wishful thinking when it comes to square enix nowadays).

      • Syltique

It’s not seeing the future.  It’s just making informed, educated guesses as opposed to irrational doomsaying.  Most people base their “analysis” on their irrational hatred for XIII, or their irrational love for FFVII, and nothing more.

SQEX threads bring out the worst in people, more than any other topic.  These are all educated guesses.

        – FFV Remake:  likely because they remade I, II, III, IV, and IV-2.  V is next.
        – FFTA3:  They put out FFTA around the time of the GBA SP.  They put out FFTA2 shortly after DS Lite.  And I’m guessing they’ll make a FFTA3 not long after 3DS XL.
        – FFXV:  Ito hasn’t been heard of this whole generation, and has to be working on something.
        – Unannounced titles for Vita:  This is just common sense really.  They were the leading supporter of PSP, and they have to be working on something.

None of it is too good to be true.  This is likely what’s coming up.  The only real question is when?

        • xavier axol

again there’s no hard evidence, while it would be nice if all those games actually come out ( specially the ff unknown ps vita game), it’s all wishful thinking. educated guess or rumors (that been good or bad) are just that and nothing more. can you blame me for been a bit cynical? after all the let downs from square ( and let’s faces it, if it wasn’t from eidos-sqex wouldn’t be doing too good) just compared the numbers from ffxlll and ffxlll-2. not only that just look how many projects eidos is actually producing, is insane!! (note: that even sqex told recently that all major projects from now on will be handle by eidos).

          • Syltique

“and let’s faces it, if it wasn’t from eidos-sqex wouldn’t be doing too good”

All Eidos has put out since the merger is Deus Ex, which sold what, 2 million?  Eidos is a fantastic addition to SQEX, but if you actually think they’re carrying the company, you have no idea how large their operations really are.  Also, Deus Ex was promoted almost entirely with CG trailers from SQEX’s Visual Works studio.  No other publisher would have been able to push Deus Ex the way they did, and make it look that good.
They probably make more from just their iOS and mobile games than they did from Deus Ex.  They also sell toys, manga, anime, arcade games, and dozens of music albums a year.  And they’re expanding their western publishing presence as well with stuff like Just Cause 2, Quantum Conundrum and Sleeping Dogs. They’re massive.

FFXI alone makes more than Eidos has so far since the merger, and they’re going to launch DQX and FFXIV 2.0 on top of that.

          • xavier axol

first: FFXIV 2.0 won’t bring back that many fan after the whole fiasco (there’re better mmo’s to boot). sqex doesn’t seen to have faith in the wiiu (for now) cause other wise it wouldn’t be caming to the wii as well (it might sell but not as much as DQ 3ds numbers, the wii sold more than other consel but do people still have their wii’s?). don’t wanna be negative, but that’s where it comes down to.

second:deus ex. was more praise than ffxiii-2 (and i dear to say ffxiii) it has a more strong and loyal following, it’s not a surprise after how good the game was. again just look at what eidos is making (tomb raider, two hitmans, and helping with sleeping dog).and what is sqex doing? it’s a shame how eidos is doing compare to it’s parent company (let me remind you tri ace made ffxiii-2). now do you get what i’m saying?.

          • LightZero

FFXIII sold close to 6.7 million and FFXIII-2 most likely sold around 3 million if we are to base it on the 9.6 million sold for the FFXIII projects. I’m not sure if DLC is included. However, that’s pretty good given that FFXIII is very divisive among the fanbase plus FFXIII-2 and Deus Ex was their most profitable game in their most recent financial report. FFX-2 sold less than FFX but it had the love of FFX behind it. FFXIII-2 is a cheap sequel that doesn’t have a huge budget. SE is doing very well right now so you don’t have to worry about them in that regard.

Btw I don’t remember them every saying that Eidos will be developing all their major titles for now on. I do remember hearing something about gaining more outside assistance. That what they are kind of doing with Bravely Default.

          • xavier axol

ok! but you aren’t including the money square-enix wasted in the making of ffxiii. the fact that was actually a ps2 title later to be coming for the ps3 (and the final straw, becaming multi.) the many years it took, i’m sure it was alot of money just trying to keep it atfloat. and the hell those poor developers went trough just following the stupidity of the one’s incharge (that even the team from versus had to step in). now was final fantasy XIII worth that much trouble compare to dues ex.? was it worth the wait? after how ffxiii limits you from so many things in the game. what’s the point of having amazing graphics, if they sacrifice gameplay, character’s personality, and story.

        • LightZero

I could see FFXIII-3, Versus, Bravely Default, and potentially FFV remake and FFX HD showing up. However, I do have my doubts with FFXV. I believe that will be saved for next gen although I do think (and hope) that Itou will be making that game since Nomura is busy with Versus and will move onto KH3. Toriyama is busy with FFXIII-3. Anyway I guess we shall see.

    • Well, Last Remnant isn’t completely finished. XD They still haven’t released it on the PS3, like they said it was gonna be released on. It’s still on their 2012+ games list.

      • Syltique

Yeah, that’s true.  I have been wondering about that for years.  Still though, they very rarely cancel games completely.

        • Yea, I agree. When I read this VS13 rumor (since one of my FF11 friends told me about it), I didn’t take it wholeheartedly. I knew it was false because Square rarely cancels their games… plus their bigger FF games usually take a good number of years before they’re released. XD

          • It seems only the crappy XIII games are made in like a year. Which is one reason they are rpobably crappy. lol

          • lol I still haven’t bought & played FFXIII-2 yet. XDD So I’m not sure exactly how terrible it is. Though, FFXIII is my least favorite FF from what all I’ve played.

          • XIII-2 is just so… ugh >_<;

          • So it’s another one of those games with mixed reactions from players? XD I know some say it’s a great improvement over the first game and then some who didn’t like it much at all. I guess I won’t know till I actually play the game myself.

    • MrRobbyM

If I don’t see FFX HD, FFXII HD(or a collection of both), Type-0 2(either that or the collection really) and Versus at TGS, I will probably be disappointed in this years TGS.

      • When was XII stated to have a HD release? Or are you just hoping for one? Type-0 2 if they make it will be called Type-1, not heard a lot about it, do not expect it to be there. And you never know about Versus.

        • MrRobbyM

Yeah, FFXII HD is just being hopeful. But It would make sense, no? Type-1 makes a lot of sense. You’re probably right, but I would expect another “Type” game to get made eventually.

          • Ah. I don’t know if it makes sense but I can’t say I wouldn’t love it myself. lol Yah a new Type game will almost assuredly be coming in the future. When is a different question,

          • Syltique

You know the more I thought about it, Agni’s Philosophy feels way more like Type-0 than anything else in FF.

The gameplay elements loosely hinted at seem more in line with an action RPG than a regular menu-based RPG, with possibly even some shooter and cover elements.

The characters are all in red and black, like Class Zero, almost like it’s in the far future in the same world, or the distant past.  The lightning magic even looks a bit similar to Type-0.

It’s just completely, totally guessing on my part, but I think SQEX will want an action RPG on consoles to compete with Skyrim, Dark Souls, Witcher 2, Mass Effect, and so on.  They’ll still do other RPG types, but they’ll definitely go for at least one big action RPG.

          • MrRobbyM

I’m also guessing a ARPG for the next big FF after Versus. Probably less Kingdom Heartsy and a bit more tactical. Something with more control than FFXIII though.

  • I knew Kotaku was lying from the start.Smh this must be some sad attempt for there site to get publicity…

    • Well it worked. No matter how sad.

  • Leivinia

You should totally change “[Laughs.]” to huehue just so that everyone gets an idea of how much he’s mocking this rumor, and what, no “~lol” at the end?

  • theoriginaled

“show dont tell” wada. I can understand why people have been suspicious honestly. There hasnt been a PEEP about the game in nigh 2 years now. Most companies would be releasing teasers, leaking bits of info about the game. Square has been content to chuckle quietly to themselves and say “Oh yeah.. we have something and its the greatest thing you’ll ever see but we’re not showing you NYA”

So one of two things IMO either theyre not nearly as confident about the game as they say and are terrified of public backlash grounding it before it’s even finished. Or they have no idea what the game is besides a disjointed pile of absolutely stunning set peices that theyre internally struggling to put together into something coherent. My .02

  • Alexandra Cordes

Considering this game and The Last Guardian are the reasons I bought a PS3… YAY!

    • Godmars

Hopefully you found something else to past the time waiting. Sad to think of the pile of dust your console is buried under.

  • SolidusSnake

WOW! You mean Kotaku was spreading lies and false rumors?! Gee, who’d a thunk it? :3

    • MrRobbyM

  • AlteisenX

Take that, nonbelievers! *Stan Lee voice*

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

    Whatever, Wada.

I still want my Ivalice game, not this chuuni crap.

If Versus XIII still doesn’t appear come 01 September, I’ll probably won’t expect it anymore.

    • Syltique

      Well, TGS is September 20-23rd.

    • MrRobbyM

I’ve read on a few sites that it will turn up at TGS, but that’s in late September.

    •  Yuck. Ivalice? Really?

      • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

Problem you can’t handle political intrigue?

  • malek86

“If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet.”

Well, you are the CEO, surely you could take the decision to show us…

Ah well. I’m still gonna consider it MIA until we get a proper release date, or new screenshots, or anything to prove the game is still alive.

  • Mago Iichi

    and the vaporware continues….

  • Isaac Newton

Gears of War will be released by Nintendo!!
That will be the next headline on Kotaku!

for clearing the all the lies…..

  • KyoyaHibari

Sweet, now this is what I like to hear! Cities that will sweep me of my feet…take me away SE! :P

  • Ricardo Guedes

I bought a PS3 in 2007 just because of XIII, MGS4 and Versus XIII. Now I learned my lesson!!! Thankfully, there were Demon’s Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Oblivion and Dragon Age to save my days!

    • xavier axol

i’m not sure if you known this, but you forgot folklore (too bad it didn ‘t made a killing in sales, but it deserves a spot on people’s gaming collection). it’s very unique and i still hope sony would make a sequel (either that or make darkcloud3 for christ sake!). sorry! i gotta take my antidepressant pills now. ;-)

      • MrRobbyM

I’ve been meaning to pick up Folklore. One of these days, I swear!

      • Valkenhayn

I swear one of the only games to even use the sixaxis function(doesn’t level-5 make Dark Cloud though?)

        • xavier axol

no sony owns the ip, if sony wants to make darkcloud then nobody can’t stop it from doing it. as for folklore, it was the very few to well implement sixaxis, but even if you take that. it wouldn’t make a difference because the game give such a good vibe (it’s an amazing game that people should try).

        • AnimusVox

Heavenly Sword used it too but it wasnt as fun as ‘Folklore’s.

      • Ricardo Guedes

i bought folklore, but found it a little boring… traded it for virtua fighter 5, but never played it either…

  • Setsuna ♥

“If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet”

They should show us, its only been like a year since we got any new footage anyway :x I am happy that they stepped up and responded to the false cancellation rumor.

  • kylehyde

    FF versus XIII forever.

    • how original..

      • kylehyde

Dissing a comment without an argument, how original.

        • how many times do we need see someone comparing FFvXIII to Duke Nukem and adding the word ‘forever’ to the name?On every FFvXIII post theres someone that have said the exact same joke. Its really corny come to think of it, cant they think of something original or not common like lets say Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Episode 3 or FFvXIII Legends 3? theres your argument, happy now? move along

  • MrRobbyM

Oh boy this is so surprising.

I hate to say I told you so, but, well. I told you so.

Also, I lol’d at “Just now, we finished our regular Versus meeting”. Regular Versus meeting. Regular.

See? It’s going to get done. It’s not like they ever abandoned it.

    • xavier axol

ohhh look at this amazing box!! it can do anything!! really! if only you could see it (it’s truly mesmerising!), but you can’t!. so you only have to rely on my word. may be i’ll let you, if you wait 6 years and sign a contract with the devil. giving away all your emotions and throw yourself to despair. it’s a good deal!, don’t you think?.

      • MrRobbyM

If only it was that simple! There are other indicators and factors that work itself!

        • xavier axol

damn! you got me. Lol. but seriously i’m trying to follow square-enix’s business model, got any advice?.

  • i knew it that it was not going to get canceled how because i had faith in them after all this a big game their making.

  • You know, even though this rumor was false, doesn’t it say something that so many people believed and accepted it? If they don’t want rumors like this blowing up again, maybe they should SHOW US THE GAME every now and then.

On a side note, GameInformer had a funny article listing all the things that have happened in the 5 or so years since FFVXIII’s announcement, including The entire Assassins Creed series, The rise and fall of rhythm games, and… Duke Nukem Forever.

    •  All it says is that people are impatient idiots who hang on the words of the mass media like soul-less drones.

  • XiaomuArisu

    I know it!
    Give me some Versus!
    ….After its done,I dont want a betaXD

  • VenerableSage

I’ll believe it when I see it, Wada. Literally.

  • Like I said before, nothing was definite until Square Enix themselves said something. This announcement came straight from Wada himself, so……… yup. And yes, now we play the waiting game once again. My pre-order on Amazon is getting cold lol

    • Anime10121

Im with you there my preorder was placed well over 2 years ago!  I think thats the longest ANYTHING has ever sat in my open orders queue without Amazon cancelling it and saying that it’s been cancelled, or they’re taking it out of their system until a more “concrete” release has been announced :P

  • GG IGN and Kotaku

  • Domii

So where the hell is it?!!!

  • TheGameTagerZ

This will be my first Final Fantasy game that I’ll own.

    • Odd game to start with but.. ok.

      • TheGameTagerZ

I mean I don’t like RPG’s the fact that I don’t have to take turns to hit someone is good enough for me.

        • You might like ARPGs then.

  • Darkrise

We got a clear confirmation at least, never trust Kotaku folks.

  • Phil Noctis Cier

Thank god:) Damn those fuckers spreading false rumors!

  • CasualGamer

Kotaku got owned. Hopefully this game worth the huge amount of resources.

    • Darkrise

I wouldn’t say they got owned, more like they probably enjoyed trolling people with info they themselves believed in.

  • aoihana

Not really much of a Final Fantasy fan(although that’s probably because I’ve never really played the games), but I’m happy to read that it’s not going to be cancelled after all, and it was just some shoddy rumor spread through the vines.

If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet.

Obviously, we haven’t seen much of Versus as of late, but that alone sounds very exciting, and I’m sure it would just reassure the many of you eagerly anticipating it! (◕‿◕✿)

    • Anime10121

You really need to try one of the mainline games as they are all generally great games (well besides 2 and 3 IMO).  I’m not going to tell you which one to play, because they are generally all very different games, and my favorite probably wont be your favorite, but that’s one of the great thing about the series, many people have their own favorite, but they all are generally good/great games.

Oh and have you ever played Kingdom Hearts?  If so, I’d really recommend giving this one a go whenever it finally comes out.  Its supposed to play like KH except with much more freedom (different weapons, being able to use your other party members, and supposedly much larger/more open worlds.)

Here’s a gameplay trailer if you missed it :)

You have to turn captions on at the bottom to watch it subbed.

      • aoihana

Yeah, I’ll definitely play one soon, and it’s just as you said: There’s one for everyone! That’s really exciting, knowing that each game resonates with people on different levels.

I actually haven’t played Kingdom Hearts, and I’ve been meaning to, but I don’t have a PS2 anymore! I thought about starting from BBS, but I’ve been told that it wasn’t a good idea, since Kingdom Hearts is so complex. I think I’ll have to pick up a PS2 and start from there.

I just saw the trailer, and man, it looks amazing! I’ve only seen screenshots and a few CG clips before, but it looks amazing. I can see why you’re all so anxious! (◕‿◕✿)

        • Anime10121

Please do :)  I guarantee you wont regret it (whichever number you start with).

And about KH, its not so much that it’s complex (because the plot’s/lore actually very simple), its just spread across too many consoles. Play KH1, Re:CoM, 2, BBS, and 3D and I can guarantee that you’ll understand that you’ll understand KH’s world.

The main reason people have trouble “understanding” the plot is because they either skip games (not the game’s fault, its like skipping entire books in Harry Potter/some other series and complaining about not understanding what happens), or only play games with a number attached to them.  I promise you, the lore is nowhere near as difficult as people make it seem, I mean, if people find THIS series complex, I’d hate to see them try Xenogears.

The things left unexplained in one game, are usually left that way on purpose to leave you anticipating the next entry (which will usually answer ?s the previous game left unanswered).

I will say this though, it is best to play them in the order they originally came out though, so whenever you do find time to get into the series go in the order I gave you (KH Com for GBA was originally released in the right time frame, but Re:CoM is a remake for PS2 that is MUCH better).  Its better that way for plot progression AND for the sake of gameplay evolution.

Edit: Oh and while 358/2 Days and Coded for the DS are ok/fun games, they are not necessary and add little to the overarching narrative (while not “spin offs” per say, they are side games).

          • aoihana

Thanks! Yeah, I thought about just starting at BBS, but you’re right, it’s best best not to skip games to grasp the story. I’ll be sure to play them soon, then! I’ll keep all this in mind! Thanks again! (◕‿◕✿)

  • Well, good news. That’s why one must always take everything read on the internet with a grain of salt. Not that I have anything against Kotaku or the people working there, it’s their job and all, but they really shouldn’t go live with rumours when they don’t have public sources.

No matter how amazing and valid your sources are, if you can’t tell others who these sources are for sure, then it just shouldn’t go live, at least imo.

    • Michael Joseph

Or just to simply NOT TRUST KO-CRAP-KU ever again since this wasn’t the first time they did something on a level of stupid equal to this.

  • l777l

Yeah, I just hope there are no statues of Lightning in that damn city.

    • Daniel Morandi

I would like to see one in the kitchen, where it should be D:

    • amagidyne

There damn well better be! I also expect, nay, demand the protagonists be a team of educated fulminologists who speak in loud, deep voices. As a pre-order bonus, the game should come with a little radio transmitter to disrupt AM signals whenever Lightning is nearby, which is always.

Also the translation should be handled by Carpe Fulgur.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

didn’t think it would be cancelled but i’ve heard of kotaku being reliable before, personally I never rated them anyway. at least Wada himself saw the hype over Versus XIII being supposedly cancelled and felt the need to actually confirm it wasn’t. I hope we can see more of Versus XIII at the FF 25th anniversary along with XIII-3. can’t wait to see the improvements for VersusXIII since the last time we saw it. ever since then they’ve been hyping it and telling us it will blow our expectations etc. I get a feeling Versus XIII will be released next year

  • eilegz

good news now i hope they got a decent release date how about next year….

  • Well ever since kotaku switch to that kinja system and a lot of their uses left, I wouldn’t be surprised if they spread lies and rumors for hits.

  • Kotaku: Okay… so what blasphemous rumour should we post for hits next? Oh! MML3 being worked on again for no apparent reason! *writes* *posts* *tons of hits* *internet explodes* *rumour shot down* *thinks to self “hahaha fools they will believe all our lies”* <— Rinse and repeat over and over. Sound about right?

  • CrimsonalCore

I’m glad it didn’t cancelled! Now who started that stupid rumor?

And release date, please? Lol they’re going to say to have patient. :3 I hope the next trailer would be better than the last time, of course the last trailer is amazing, now I hope this one is the best. :D

  • ZBaksh386

I just hope we see something soon

  • Whoa, whoa, wait a minute, hold on.

    Who Tweets “[Laughs.]”??

    • He didn’t say [Laughs.] in the tweet; it was just translated that way. But there’s a “w” at the end of the tweet, which is the Japanese version of “laughing/lol”.

  • amagidyne

And now, another six years of silence!

    • SLick123456789111

I like how FF13 took as long as it did , but they were(are) able to pump out FF13-2 & FF13-3 like it was(is) no problem.
      Something to keep in mind.

      • MrRobbyM

I totally agree, but to be a bit more fair, XIII was the first XIII game so they did have to make every single thing. Art, character designs, blah blah blah you know what I’m saying.

        • SLick123456789111

Mhm , I know what your saying Robby.
Even though true , it’s still irksome how SE’s schedule works around itself like this these days.
          It’s possum like.

  • 果林

so the first meeting within 3 years? god dam it

  • *cheers* Glad to hear it. Now back to waiting ( ._.)

  • Valtiel Ikari

urge to kill descending… status back to normal… happy face :D

  • Gideon de Groodt

I was asking about this on the open thread like.. two days ago?

And here we got an update. : D

  • See this is why I don’t trust many video game blogs, they always lie and spread false rumors and overreact. I’m glad the rumors are canned, it would be a real shame for a game that started in 06 be canned now.

  • cedx123

This is exactly why people should not be quick to trust rumors so quickly especially if its from Kotaku. But anyways its great to hear that Versus is going well.

  • Settsuo

The guy who wrote the Versus XIII article is another reason why I didn’t believe it. Most of his articles are just troll articles fit for instant clicks and then rage induced aftershocks. Kotaku has never been reliable in my book they employ trolls who just spout off false information and try to mislead the gaming community. Yea they also write actual articles, but it’s not worth the migraine when attempting to decide if it’s legit or not. Anyway SE any updates on Type-0??

  • OatMatadoQuatro

But will it appear in TGS? I hope it has its release date announced. Please Nomura!

  • DCBlackbird

Ahh siliconera you never disappoint you’re number 1 in my book. Huh noctis face has become less bishounen and his hair a bit shorter…….Fantastic!

  • “city would sweep you off your feet”

what am I, a schoolgirl? XD

either way, if the city could interest me as much as say; Treno, then maybe lol

  • i dun believe in this project , but when i do i believe in harvey dent

  • i mean honestly , i prefer they remake FF7 , i wanna my female protagonist back in HD version(Tifa)

    • Testsubject909

For a moment there, I thought you meant Cloud in drags.

      • MrRobbyM

Glorious drag queen Cloud in HD.

  • Testsubject909

So, yup. My thoughts that the rumors of a cancellation would amount to just a whole lot of free marketing and advertising in the form of sudden hype and awareness via word of mouth through the panic seemed like it came true.

*looks down at the posts below*Especially considering all the buzz here… already over 200 comments, nice.
