Why Capcom Brought Zombies Back For Resident Evil 6

While zombies were once the main enemy in the Resident Evil series, more recent Resident Evil games introduced fodder like the Ganado in Resident Evil 4 and the Ooze from Resident Evil: Revelations. Why did Capcom bring zombies back for Resident Evil 6?

"We brought zombies back because they’re popular. Everyone loves ‘em, that’s why we brought them back," laughed executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi when he was speaking to Siliconera."Based on feedback from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the fact that there weren’t classic zombies in those games and people really wanted them. We tried to respond to the requests and put them in this game. We tweaked them a bit so they aren’t the same zombies you would expect."

Zombies in say Dead Rising and The Walking Dead tend to be passive until you disturb them. The zombies in Resident Evil 6 are faster and can use weapons if they find them.

"The zombies when you first see them, they shamble around slowly. But, if they spot you or they get closer they break out into a sudden dash and try to grab you. We tried to make this as instantaneous as possible. Some of them will leap out at you," producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added. For the most part, they are zombies, but they have a bursts of energy here and there that give them a little extra oomph." Resident Evil 6 gives a bit of "oomph" to the playable characters too. You can do an evasive roll to get out of the way and slide to close distance between you and a zombie horde faster.

Hirabayashi continued, "Also for the weapons they use in the game, it’s not that we decided zombies should use weapons per se. It’s just that we wanted to get across the feeling that these used to be people and people either picked up weapons when they were fighting or they used certain objects when they were alive. They have this instinctual ability to pick up these things and use them. It’s not that they are purposely using weapons, it’s in the back of their mind because they used to use weapons before they became zombies."

"There’s another way you can interact with zombies that we haven’t really shown yet. That’s something when you’re fighting zombies that will be a key component and it’s something we’ll show going forward," Hirabayashi teased.

I’m genuinely terrified and intrigued by the possibilities of this.  And that’s saying something, coming from a guy who’s been saying zombies have been done… to death.

  • Mago Iichi

That’s a big cop out if I’ve ever seen one.Zombies don’t have instincts, that’s just some cop out crapcom came up with to hopefully stop all the whining about the Resident Evil series not being a survival horror game and a zombie game, but a 3rd person shooting game with quick time events.

    Stay classy crapcom.

    • http://twitter.com/adamdragonhero AdamAnimeHero

Cop-out is all you complainers know how to say, and you clearly don’t understand Umbrella’s intentions with zombies and B.O.W.S in the story. It’s just your pre-existing dislike for Capcom for some random reason.

      • Ricewarrior

Most people don’t like them because of their business practices with DLC.

Though if you ask me, there are other companies out there that are more deserving of that hatred. *Cough* EA *cough*

    • Peace Legacy

If a Zombie doesn’t have instinct, and just mindless creatures, then what makes it able to notice human, give chase to human, attack human, feed on human, etc. It would just stay hungry to dead.
Your hate propaganda post disgusts me
As long as the Zombie doesn’t ride motorbike, uses gun, shield, climb ladder, etc. then things are cool

Zombies don’t have Reason, almost every living thing has instinct.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

If a zombie isn’t running on instinct, why would it try to eat you? A zombie would be running on ONLY instinct.

Honestly, I think this game is trying to be too many things at once and failing. They are trying to offer all these different campaigns and gameplay changes, and it just feels like a mess.

They tried to make Leon’s side classic horror, but going from the demo, co-op and bad pacing ruined the atmosphere. Chris was supposed to be about action, but the firefights and using cover felt really flat and uninteresting. With Jack, I don’t even know what they were going for because I just fought a stupid lumbering creature by shooting explosive barrels.

Being able to run around punching out zombies and do things like evade and roll around on the ground also don’t fit in with the game. There were also constant button prompts such as open this door or step up on this ledge that felt unnatural and didn’t add anything. I have no idea what they are doing anymore, and I don’t think they do either.

  • Revorse

Jeez, tough crowd down below. Well I’m interested.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Capcom responding to fan requests? Since when?

  • Jirin

Oh, come on, don’t say *that* Capcom.  Maybe the fanboys like being pandered too, but nobody else wants to hear that.

Not that I have anything against zombies, they make a wonderful survival horror villain. But if you’re going to make creative decisions entirely based on focus groups at least lie about it.

    • Göran Isacson

I dunno, there’s something to be said about being brutally honest about where your inspirations came from. For all the scummy things Capcom has pulled lately, being upfront about why they do them is at the very least a step in the right direction.

  • Nitraion

Sorry not to be mean to be rude but Zombie in Walking dead is scarier i think….
you don’t have to get bite to turn into zombie…umbrella virus is still need more development…

    • Rohan Viajar

more like “night of the living dead”.
      every dead being will arise.
now that was scary to think about.

  • Solomon_Kano

Having zombies use items is pretty cool. It’s always interesting, to me at least, to watch zombie stuff and think about what the zombies were as humans. So it’s cool that if you come across some police zombies they might have batons, or a firefighter zombie might have an axe, and so on. I like little stuff like that.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Will Chris’ rival, the boulder, return Capcom? There needs to be a round 3!

    • Testsubject909

      What about The Incredible Hulk?

They never did finish their rooftop fight from that MvC3 intro video.

      3?

      • OatMatadoQuatro

RE1 Remake: The boulder does not let Chris pass and wins
RE5: After years of training, Chris beats up Boulder in the middle of a volcano
        RE6: The final fight!

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

After watching a demo of Leon’s scenario, in one of the first battles the zombies just kind of stood around right in front of Leon. I thought that was strange.

As far as zombies in games, Left 4 Dead’s infected are still my favorite. They leave enough space around them for not to be a problem, but also tear into you when it’s time to take action. I think they have the right balance.

  • konsama

You know what baffles me? That he speaks of those zombies like something new when in RE outbreak zombies were already like that, those were IMO the best RE games that ever came out. And i’m still waiting for their PSN/XBL HD online version.

    • Nitraion

Your mind is same as me bro :)

    • Laharl

      Same Director

      • Solomon_Kano

Same director indeed. Good thing too.

I don remember any fast ZB on outbreak lol. I do remember a plant ZB…

  • Laharl

I can’t wait to shoot that zombie that looks like Randy Orton

  • kevinposta

I really like they are making zombies return. I really do.
But there’s something that bothers me in the way he expresses why they are back: he says that they’re back just because people loved them not because they’re an integral part of Resident Evil’s identity.
I understand there are a limited number of things you can do with zombies but if you think about Resident Evil…you think about zombies, really. They being removed  were one of the many tiny things that added up in RE4 and 5 to undermine the identity of those games and made them feel like a completely different franchise.

Aw well… Here’s hoping there’s a decent game. Expecting them to make a Resident Evil game that feels like Resident Evil is too much at this point; it’s changed too much. I’m glad they’re trying at least.

    • Peace Legacy

Well, they are an integral part of Resident Evil’s identity is because the fan love and accept them, so it’s just a cycle thing, really
…also, irrelevant but…Kevassenpai, is that you?

      • kevinposta

If you mean Kevassa, yes it’s me (um, where did that senpai come from?).
Anyways what I meant with identity was that Resident Evil started the franchise with them and all the games till Resident Evil 4 had a strong prescence of zombies (unless some exception escapes me).
I honestly don’t love the zombies as much as I feel they’re a rightful part of the game.
It’s kind of like how I feel about the zombies in House of the Dead or the monsters in Silent Hill. They’ve been always there and should always be there.

Guess they missed the other points on why 5 was meh/suck since its in 6 but whatever, Game looks…alright

  • komiko12

Scary… I really prefer zombies to stay slow as I imagine them with weak flesh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

      To quote Zoey:
“I can’t get over how FAST they all are, it’s not even fair. I’m calling zombie bullshit on that, you know?
They’re not…ALLOWED to be so fast.”

      • Aleksi Eerola

“I don’t remember asking you a GODDAMN thing.”

        Sincerely,

        Zombie

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Buuut…….. people die and become zb when they r bitten!!!

    • cj_iwakura

I believe an advocate of classic zombie films once mentioned that being slow doesn’t make them harmless. It’s because they travel in massive hordes.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

There’s no scientific reason for fresh zombies to be slow.

      • komiko12

Hehe. Well there really wasn’t a scientific reason why zombies should exist in the first place. :D

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

We do hv fungal parasite and rabies……

  • Fryxell

Great, now what’s left is to give the feeling that I’m actually struggling to survive in a zombie apocalypse game. It’s still full of “action packed hollywood” style.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RatedR89 Irvin Manfred Wesker

this is the reason why cannot wait for resident evil 6 , my good old friend(zombie) is back

  • l777l

Yes, just ask people what they want and then wildly combine all these elements. What a great plan.

(Zombies are now fast and use weapons. Yes, that’s very zombie-like. Well, they could’ve called them Las-Plagas, but perhaps people then would’ve noticed that this stuff isn’t very zombie at all.)

    • Laharl

Zombies have been using weapons since Night of the Living Dead…

      And Fast since… Dawn?

      • l777l

Very good. Now Night of the Living Dead – and Dawn of the Flawed Reply – are Resident Evil titles. Anyway, now that Leon and Co. are sliding around the floor and happily kicking groups of zombies in some sort of a Wrestling type of effort it is certainly imperative to have zombies handle fire arms.

        • Laharl

  • Valtiel Ikari

since when exactly does capcom please their fanbase!?

did I end up in a parallel universe or something?

    • gomas

hahahaha, so how is it to live under a friggin rock?

      • Valtiel Ikari

last time I checked, capcom was doing the exact opposite of pleasing their fanbase.
RE series went downhill whit RE4, they cancelled Megaman Legend 3, they denied their fanbase megaman for MvC3 and UMvC3, thay gave us a fat ugly Megaman for SFxT, they are trasforming Dante from Devil May Cry into it’s exact opposite, they denied us awesome sequels for better fighting games (like Rival School, Dark Stalkers, etc), they denied us more Breath of Fire games (and many others good games), they gave us a mediocre dudebro shooter with the name Resident Evil slapped on the tittle.
So yeah, I do not feel like capcom being pleasing me for a while, except for Dragon’s Dogma.
And there are many others that feel just like me, so I don’t get this “living under a friggin rock” statement.

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I can’t believe some people have nothing better to do than sit around and complain about how zombies can climb ladders, walk fast, work as a group or use weaponry.

Objectively speaking, when you go that far down the rabbit hole, it’s time to pull yourself back out.

It’s a videogame; of course they want the enemies you fight to evolve over the course of the series. “Zombie” is just a word that’s used to describe a very wide range of undead enemy types. Sheesh.

    • Yuri

So how much is Capcom paying you?

  • gomas

sheesh, please, RE4 revitalized the series and the game was, is and will be a masterpiece and a milestone of gaming forever.
I`ve played the series from 96 and RE4 was , not only a breeze of fresh air (more than just fresh air) for the franchise. The game itself had one hell of an atmosphere and as i said, It was a masterpiece in all aspects.
Comparing RE4 with RE5 is just retarded. RE5 was just a mediocre, uninspired piece of crap sequel with absolutely NO atmosphere at all and a mediocre, outdated co-op play.
Crying about the lack of zombies is the most childish and absurd “argument” i`ve ever heard. The virus “EVOLVED” how stupid could have been (script wise and common fu&/(g sense wise) to have zombies in RE4?… and sorry but, RE was always about B.O.Ws… zombies (even though I love them) were never the main reason why we ever played RE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/agunx.cool.3 Agunx Cool

haha,, gonna become more freaky then,,, finally back killing those zombie,, this what i’ve been waiting for,, thankz capcom,,,
