Chunsoft’s Murder Mystery, The Night Of The Kamaitachi, Is Finally Being Localized

By Spencer . July 27, 2012 . 7:25pm

nightColor me surprised! The Night of the Kamaitachi, one of Chunsoft’s Super Famicom sound novels, will be localized thanks to Agetec. The news comes from Seattle’s Casual Connect conference where Agetec and Chunsoft said they’re going to release The Night of the Kamaitachi for iOS and Android hoping to sell it to the e-book audience.

The Night of the Kamaitachi is a murder mystery game where you have to figure out which person is the killer in a ski lodge. The game has multiple endings depending on what choices you make. The Night of the Kamaitachi is essentially an early visual novel, but instead of focusing on the characters (all of which are silhouettes), the game makes use of music to set the mood.

Chunsoft, well now Spike Chunsoft, continue to release new games in The Night of the Kamatachi series today. The most recent one, True Night of the Kamaitachi was a PlayStation Vita launch title.

Thanks for the tip Anna! (P.S. if anyone at Agetec is reading this contact us, we want to hear about your visual/sound novel plans!)

The silhouette on the right reminds me of Edgeworth.

    • Tom_Phoenix

Really? Beacuse I find it more similar to Godot.

      • Testsubject909

        You should’ve done an objection…

  • Watahashi

    Gamecenter CX already spoiled me for who the killer is. ;_;

    • Testsubject909

That’s okay. It gave you the joy of the episode.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol, i know this game from Kacho Arino there.^_^ And i hope Agetec will take more of this sound novels genre.^_^ As Japan has a lot of this interesting game lol.^_^

Ooh, truly wonderful news from Agetec! And yeah, as chilling as the game seemed to be, that GCCX episode was pure comedy gold.

      - This theory’s gone far out of the Chief’s hands now.

      - The worst possible bad ending.
      - Oh, really?
      - Yes.

      (^▽^)

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yup.^_^ I just love how “Tantei” Kacho Arino can screw himself from bad into escape ending to worst ending there lol.^_^

      • Testsubject909

But in the end, his theories were correct!

        • http://www.salarymandaishi.net/ SalarymanDaishi

Very true. Also, it seemed quite hard to predict how the protagonist would act based on the selections made. Overall, Arino seems rather skilled with puzzles and visual novels.

          • Testsubject909

A bit of a shame that the translated official English version of his show feels like a butchered version of the original.

Lacking all the little bits where Arino is outside of the office really removes a lot of the personality the show has and many of the memorable moments, plus it removes screentime of Arino’s supporting group (cameraman Abe for example).

  • Muddied_Waters

Kama*i*tachi,  I think it is.  If it’s “Kamatachi”, then that’d have a whole different meaning.

  • thaKingRocka

Well, hot damn! I never imagined we’d get any of these. This is great. Many thanks to Agetec.

  • Morricane

If it sells, maybe they’ll do port and translate the other sound novels too…not that I personally care about localizations, but other people should be able to experience good games too :D

    I wonder how they’ll translated Kayama’s lines.

  • SupaPhly

they could of AT LEAST released it on psn for vita or the 3ds estore

    • thaKingRocka

“hoping to sell it to the e-book audience.”

Hopefully, once they’ve got the translation in order and they’ve made some sales, they’ll find their way to PSN or the eShop.

Yea I knew that screen shot looked familiar,Like many I saw this game on Game Center CX, which was an awesome episode. It really would of been cool to have it on te psn and/or Nintendo shop

Squee, I love mysteries, visual novels, AND games that focus on music! I’m definitely interested in sound novels… Ooooh, I can’t wait to get this. >w<

  • Ziko577

I’d like Otogirisou to get localized one day. That game is pretty good when I played it a while back on a SNES emulator. I got the good ending and everything.

  • Alexandra Cordes

    …This is amazing news. ;^;

You forgot the I in kamaitachi. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamaitachi_no_Yoru

Regardless, I’m excited to hear this game’s actually going to be localized.  I still remember reading about it in a tiny blurb in Nintendo Power when I was a kid and thinking it was a shame we never got unusual things like this in English.

  • LynxAmali

    agetec’s stiill around?

Haven’t heard from them since the PS2 Armored Core days.

    Cool.

  • Alphabet Soup

It’s Otakon weekened and yet such an awesome licensing announcement comes from across the country!  AND they’re including Android users!  MY MONEY IS YOURS, AGETEC!  (next, MACHI!)

  • artemisthemp

Hope this game will sell well, so Company may consider localizing True Night of the Kamaitachi
