Street Fighter X Tekken Producer Talks Rebalancing

By Spencer . August 1, 2012 . 3:13am

rolento Street Fighter X Tekken has a bunch of new characters available as downloadable content, but that’s not the biggest change. The game has also been rebalanced and Ryu took a performance hit.

"We nerfed Ryu’s Hurricane Kick a bit by reducing the hit box and reduced the number of frames of advantage it has," producer Tomoaki Ayano said when explaining changes to Siliconera. "Every character is getting some kind of gameplay fix or rebalance like Rolento’s standing jab."

One of the biggest changes is the auto-block gem, which was designed to make Street Fighter X Tekken more accessible, has been adjusted. Ayano explains, "In terms of gems, we’re rebalancing the auto-throw and auto-block gems. These were gems initially intended for beginners, but as it turns out they are really good for experienced players as well. We’re going to increase the amount of [super] meter they take as well as the number of gem slots they take. In addition to that, the auto-block gem used to only drain your meter if you blocked incorrectly. Now it will drain your meter even if you block normally. Basically, you won’t have any super meter for the entire battle if you select this."

Balancing characters on top of gems makes Street Fighter X Tekken a tough game to tweak, so I asked Ayano if we’ll ever see a special "no gem" mode. The short answer is "no."

"We think gems are an integral part of what we envisioned Street Fighter X Tekken could be. We want to balance gems to be as fair as possible for all players out there, but there are players in tournaments that play without gems," Ayano answered. "If that’s what they want to do, they’re free to do that, but from Capcom’s perspective we want players to use gems as much as possible."

sounds good hopefully they can make the the game great as i still believe it has a lot of potential

I’ve seen people say they absolutely hate the gem system with a burning passion and others that don’t seen to mind them too much.

Though I’ve yet to see a single person say they genuinely like the gem system, and that it makes the game more enjoyable as a result.

Are Capcom seriously trying to balance this mess of a game ? No need to remind everyone that this game exist Capcom, they’re trying to forget this game even happened.

This is a little distressing to hear.
I loved Capcom VS SNK 2 due to the customization of the battle system and this lacks exactly that.
    Options are never bad, Capcom.
Still, it’s kinda nice they attempt to rebalance.

     Stupid gems…

Ah really that is so awesome. But wait oh I forgot I sold it just to pre-order Persona 4 arena dang capcom I’m really sorry it was an awesome game though but I didn’t enjoy it.

    rar, the game really needs some balance patches, but I think it’ll take a few rather sizable patches to get the game into order >__3<;

It's really a shame because I think the game has loads of potential, and I love the look of the game and it has a great cast, but until a patch levels out the cast, there's a huge ugly gap between high and low tier at the moment, and even between SF and Tekken sides. At least locally it'd be easy enough to play without gems, simply move to the GEM ID selector and don't select any ID's but yeah it makes online kind of a mixed bag. Although I don't think gems are that bad, the assist gems in the hands of expert players have made for some really daunting matches >3<; Combine that with the game's timer/damage issues, it really pulls down the experience.

    I could buy it…..
    or wait for super SxT…

I asked Ayano if we’ll ever see a special “no gem” mode. The short answer is “no.” – could of Saved the games life just now. . . COULD OF. . . * sigh * the things these developers do. . .

Sounds kinda like they’re clinging on to gem-mode simply because they can’t accept the possibility that it was a bad idea from the start. Like, I get that when you’ve put a lot of effort into an idea you want to see it thrive, but just including a mode where they’re not available is just going to make more people like the game. It already sells on virtue of being a cross-over game, I don’t think you NEED gimmicks like the gems on top of that…

  • Pipiskin99

yeah, i hate those gems too, but the game itself really needs some balance updates, and the PC version is still not fixed
