The Weirdest Thing About Persona 4 Arena Is Being Inside Yu’s Head

By Spencer . August 1, 2012 . 1:05am

I just scratched the surface of Persona 4 Arena starting with (formerly silent) protagonist Yu Narukami’s story. In Persona 4, Yu only spoke when he bellowed persona names. He still doesn’t talk that much in Persona 4 Arena, but you always hear – or better put – read what Yu is thinking. You’ll get to know "him," which is a little weird if you played Persona 4 because Yu is supposed to be you.

Yu is determined to rescue his cousin Nanako who Teddie says has been brought into the shadow world. As Yu battles his friends, he mentally remarks on Yosuke’s callousness and Chie’s strange behavior. You’ll see how Yu reasons through situations, his doubts, and feelings. However, Yu doesn’t have as strong a personality as say Teddie or quirks like Elizabeth.

Wait, so Persona 4 was all about bonds. Why is Yu fighting his friends?

Without spoiling too much, something has come over them in the Midnight Channel.

I think you lost me here who is Yosuke? I didn’t play Persona 4.

Don’t worry Persona 4 Arena introduces the main characters in Yu’s storyline. You’ll learn what a persona is when Yu visits the Velvet Room and some events from the game are summarized. Of course, that means there are some Persona 4 spoilers in Persona 4 Arena.

OK, I completed Persona 4, but don’t usually play fighting games. Will I be able to get through the story?

Yeah, so far Persona 4’s story fights are a piece of cake. You’ll spend more time reading Yu’s thoughts and visual novel-esque conversations than actually fighting. It took around 30 minutes to clear Yu’s story mode, which unlocked two more routes.

When you unwrap Persona 4 Arena you can select Yu, Yosuke, Chie or Yukiko’s story mode. The rest have to be unlocked, but you can use every character right away in arcade mode. I’ve been practicing with Elizabeth who might sound overpowered since she has two instant death spells and four –dyne tier elemental spells, but strong spells don’t deal that much more damage compared to other attacks.

now you get to know what Yu  thinking?

  • Brian Tran

I am thou, thou art me.

  • RmanX1000

Saw the first 20 minutes of the story. Just about s**t my pants when i heard Yu say “It’s good to see you guys again.”

  • ThatBlackGuy

Everytime Yu talks I can’ but help seeing Adachi.

    •  Least Yu doesn’t spout out words like murders, cabbages, female dogs and overused women.

  • Go2hell66

it can’t be that weird hearing him talk, especially if you’ve watched the anime

    • RmanX1000

      but with Adachi’s voice…. so… weird… but… sooooo satisfying… *nosebleed*

      • D: NO DUDE tht just sound wrong.

      • LynxAmali

Everytime Yu speaks, I will only be able to hear THE BOSCH.

That’s not a bad thing though.

  • “You’ll get to know “him,” which is a little weird if you played Persona 4 because Yu is supposed to be you.”

I thought it was the other way around….

  • Being in Yu’s head would be like seeing many text dialogue boxes all around with multiple replies to choose from.

    • You forgot this one.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I thought………. all that Yu had in his head is……… being Nanako “bro”?^_^

  • OatMatadoQuatro

“He still doesn’t talk that much in Persona 4 Arena, but you always hear – or better put – read what Yu is thinking.”
I hope it’s not like Squall from FF8 where I read an entire book about his thoughts. At least I hope he has funny thoughts.

  • Leivinia

Everything is about Nanako, trufax. My copy won’t be here for a while because lolSALshipping, which was all I could afford after getting the Famitsu DX Pack.

    • I knew it!! And the Animation ED comes to mind…. Dojima is encouraging them lol. (Or he just joking)

  • TheGameTagerZ

Just to let you guys know. The first part of everyone’s story is about 35 minutes after that their’s fighting (From what I’ve played so far). The material is great but if you’re not much of a reader you’ll find the first 35 minutes to be dreadful.

    • Mike Pureka

And why would you even be playing Story Mode in a Persona game if you’re “not much of a reader”?

      • TheGameTagerZ

I never said I wasn’t much of a reader you didn’t read it correctly…I was speaking in general because when I uploaded two parts of Chie’s story some have been saying the story is too much to read. I enjoyed the story but I’m just saying some people only want it for the fighting.

  • Justin Graham

Maybe it’s just me, but I find the whole mind-control angle that they’re supposedly going with to make everyone fight each other kind of creepy.  If everyone is like that at the start, I’m not sure how much enjoyment I’ll get out of it because I’ll probably feel compelled to rush to a point where people start snapping out of it.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Don’t worry, there is a reason for everything, just playthrough it.

      • Justin Graham

I will.  I trust Atlus enough to pull the story off.  It’s just a plot hook that makes me feel uneasy.

  • NorthernPatches

I want to play this so much, but I know I’ll just be awful at it like all fighting games I play.

    • TheGameTagerZ

It’s pretty easy to pick up after you do Lesson Mode.

  • Tales_of_Master

Can’t wait to get this game. Also, can’t wait to get a release date for the EU version >:c Damn you Atlus…I’ll only forgive you if you announced Soul Hackers 3DS and SMTIV for localization.

  • Wackoramaco87

SO excited for this~! Can’t wait to play it next week, especially with P3 characters! Question though, is this an actual part of the story line for P4Golden, or more of a side game with the characters?

    • Locklear93

It’s my recollection that it’s an extension of P3/P4’s canon plot, but I could be mistaken there.

    • LynxAmali

Continues off the original P4, not Golden.

      I THINK.

      • Locklear93

To the best of my knowledge, there’s effectively no difference–P4 Golden absolutely does have additions, but I don’t believe they affect the plot any: it’s a re-release with new goodies to attract buyers, rather than an extension of the story.

  • Tom_Phoenix

So you’re finally going to learn what Yu is thinking……Yu being you…..meaning, you’re going to learn what you are thinking….even though you already know what you are thinking….or maybe you don’t…..or maybe the game doesn’t know that you know what you are thinking, so it’s trying to present what you are thinking….or it’s guessing what you might be thinking….or maybe it somehow really knows what you are thinking….

    Ok, my head hurts now.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Thanks god Yu isn’t like Squall in this game

  • Cjs0511

Yu is my favorite character and I really can’t wait to see how he’ll be in this.

  • Guest

Looks pretty cool. I love fighters, though I suck at them. It’s good to know I won’t rage quit going through the story.
