It Took 46 Minutes To Download New Super Mario Bros. 2

By Spencer . August 6, 2012 . 5:17pm

nsmb2Nintendo is jumping into the digital distribution deep end by offering retail games as Nintendo eShop downloads. New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be one of first games available in stores and as a download.

We were curious to see how long it would take to download New Super Mario Bros. 2 from the eShop. So we timed the file transfer with a stopwatch and it took 46 minutes and 23 seconds to get New Super Mario Bros. 2. This test was done with a US region 3DS and a US code for the game, which comes out in North America on August 19.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 clocks in at 2,725 blocks or 340 MB. That’s roughly twice the size of Mighty Switch Force (currently the second biggest game on my US 3DS) which is 1,617 blocks.

Yeah, that kinda makes sense, the eshop is the slowest of all the networks when it comes to downloading anything, hopefully that is improved when WiiU hits.

    • Ah.. yeah that’s what I meant! Thanks for the heads up.

      • Anime10121

         No prob :)

        • So is it better to just wait till 2 3 oclock in the mornin to download the game since the traffic on nintendos servers wont be busy.

    • RoboConker

Well…since WiiU games disc have the same storage capacity as a Blu-Ray disc, it will take a lot of time downloading the games like in the PS3. I remember Iwata saying that it would be better to let the game downloading when you go to sleep, because the files are really large. But at least we can buy an external hard drive that have 1TB or more of memory to download  all the games we can.

  • French

I sound like a noob, but if I had amazingly fast internet, would it make the download quicker ?

    • Anime10121

It depends on what speed Spence and the rest have, mines a 12mbps connection and it would normaly take about 5-10 min to dl’d a file of the same size on the internet, but it took about 20 min to get Mighty Switch Force off the eshop.  So I can imagine with NSMB2 being twice the size of MSF my dl’d time would be comparable to what they have here.

I hope the network’ll be better on the WiiU, especially considering they plan on selling full retail games on it also, and those would be GIGS worth of data, which on the big N’s current network, would take HOURS:(

      • French

I see, that explains it all !

That sucks, but I guess 46 minutes isn’t too just really impatient ! If I just bought the game I could open it and play it straight away on the journey home or if it came through the post..I guess you could download it over night and wake up to it  ?

My internets the same speed by the way (based in London !)

      • Yeah, I actually recorded this too! The whole thing was to satiate my curiosity for such things. Hahaha. My connection clocked in at 18mbps when I ran the download test.

        • Anime10121

Yep, and you have an even faster speed than I do, hopefully Nintendo works something out on their end (and I’m sure they will, as PSN also took a while to get up to speed), because I’d hate to see it when bigger games start hitting the network.

          • Imagine what several people downloading the same game off the network would be like.

          • Anime10121

I shiver at the thought :(

  • Vampiric

I can get to a gamestop and have lunch faster.

Not to mention Id own the game at the end of the day

  • i dont get why some people bitch about waiting an hour for a full game download.
for a mini game it would be bad, but for a game you are going to sink endless hours into, its no biggie.

    • Doctor Nebula

Then you remember you have to download MMOs with files sizes like 20gb..

  • I just noticed but, why does Mario have tanooki ears and tail where Luigi has fox ears and tail?

    • Xeawn

      O_O Oh no, has anyone seen Tails lately? THEY GOT YA LITTLE BUDDY! THEY FINALLY GOT YA ; _ ;

    • In Japan, tanooki and foxes (kitsune) are considered a complimentary pair of animals, sort of like “lions and tigers” in English. Also, someone with a fat round face like Mario is said to have a “tanooki face” and someone with a long narrow face like Luigi is said to have a “fox face.”

    • AuraGuyChris

Because Luigi pulls off a surprisingly good Tails impression than Tails himself does. Geeky Tails? Screw him! Luigi’s where it’s at.

46 minuts is nothing..One game for my PSP took two hours and a half to DL and RoAW for the PS3,yeah I know I say this all the time, litterally took from 8pm to about 12:30 in the afternoon the next day to download….another attributing factor of why I dislike DDL games when they dont offer a “physical” copy option but thats a seperate tirade…… anyhoo, while the DL times are ridiculous in most cases and hardly convenient  I have enjoyed them and at the end of the day I just played with a different system untill whatever game it was finished. Though I orriginally didnt take much grace in the wait time its something ive just learned to accept if I want something bad enough its worth it.

  • s07195

For me, the amount of time needed seems reasonable.

  • Just 340 MB?

    • AuraGuyChris

I know. A gaming miracle. Like putting a lot of voice acting in Star Fox 64 and Conker’s Bad Fur Day.

  • Scrooge_McDuck

Coming from a country where 100 KB/s is considered blazing fast, this feels like an adequate download time.

    • XypherCode

for some, half of that is already hallelujah :))

  • Hoshi星

So 1 block is equal to approximately 8Mb? Ah, I always wondered about that.

46 minutes to download the full game. Seems fair I guess.

  • thaKingRocka

That’s a lousy speed. I’ve always wondered why the Wii and 3DS speeds are so slow. Steam gave me Skyrim in just under two hours. This game should have taken five to ten minutes.

My math may be off, and I stress that, but I’m calculating about 120kbps for this download rate. Steam provides a pretty stable 2.5mbps. I don’t know the rates I get on XBL, but they are certainly better than eShop or PSN. With Steam’s speed, I am getting that this download would have taken just over two minutes.

  • kupomogli

It doesn’t state the connection speed used in the article, but I’ll assume it’s got a good internet speed.

The same mb download on the 360 or Vita wirelessly would be less than five minutes.  With worse wireless speeds, the PS3 would probably still download that file size in atleast 10 minutes.

46 minutes is a ridiculously long time to download a file that size.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I think it all depends on your internet speed there. For me here, updating my PS3 there takes almost 4 hours lol.T_T And seeing this, retail is still my best option lol.^_^

      • kupomogli

Well I did say I assumed they had a good connection speed.  But I guess on the second paragraph I should have said.  If the connection speed is good, atleast 10mb/s or more is standard with most high speed providers, then the download speed compared to what would be done on the PS3, 360, and Vita is poor.

I’m inclined to think it’s more than 3DS anyways.  I downloaded Netflix wirelessly on the 3DS and something that should take no more than a few seconds took a few minutes.

  • James Beatty

It doesn’t seem consistent with my experiences, but then again i leave it of “download later” sleep mode so i take a shower and watched a tv show and it was done

  • AMGZant

    Man, your internet sucks balls.

  • malek86

This sounds insanely slow, but then again, for some reason, the eShop is always insanely slow.

  • XypherCode

For that file size, I would say it can take about 20-30min download time where I’m from. But it should’ve stated the download speeds but I’m guessing you guys have really fast speeds to test it on.

    • malek86

They said below that they reach around 18Mbps in speedtests.

At home, I have a 12Mbps, and the 3DS/Wii are very slow for me too. I’m guessing it’s just a Nintendo thing. Steam and XBL, in comparison, manage to use pretty much my full bandwidth, and I can download 400MB in less than 10 minutes. The PS3 was similar, although sometimes a bit slower, while the PSP and PSV for some reason only managed a fraction of that (although still faster than the 3DS/Wii).

      • XypherCode

        Oops didn’t see that :P

Well Nintendo might be capping the bandwidth for their devices or servers to a certain speed or degree w/c of course we don’t know why. Well they are new to this digital thing in terms of full retail games. The eShop is already slow itself so….

I just hope this isn’t the case for online gaming in general.

        •  The PSN and Xbox Market were also “new to thais digital thing” several years ago and my PS3 could use all my bandwith back than. My guess is that Nintendo put an inferior modem inside their 3DS, because they have a tendency to use inferior CPU/GPU chips in their devices. I also remember that Wii downloads were also slow for me.

  • Too bad my net connection is 72 times slower….

  • Casey McMahon

I think I am better off driving 1 mile to Gamestop and picking up a physical copy I can pass down to my children.

  • kureno

Take’s me about 5-8 min to download mighty swift force.

  • LunarKnite

Not sure if anyone would read this, but I jsut downloaded it at 3 in the morning and it took a tad less than 10 minutes.
