By Spencer . August 10, 2012 . 2:49pm

shinobiThe PlayStation Blogcast, announced Shinobi will be re-released as a PS2 Classic via the PlayStation Store. Shinobi is a 3D action game where you control Hotsuma as he slices through eight levels. You have to keep cutting through monsters because if you don’t Hotsuma’s sword will start draining his life.

Instead of focusing on stealth like other ninja games, Shinobi is all-combat. If it’s priced the same as other PS2 Classics expect to pay $9.99 for Shinobi on Tuesday.

This is great news for me, I liked this game a lot!

I remember it was very frantic and fast peaced, some enemy design where a bit boring (specifically the flying heads), but it was a very cool game!

  • Solomon_Kano

Yes! I always wanted to play this!

  • Enma_Kozato

I knew skipping out on a used PS2 copy at Gamestop would pay off eventually. Okay, not really, but I’m glad this is going to be on PSN.

  • Model_M

Hell yess!! Best 3D ninja game. Definitely deserves a sequel.

    • neo_firenze

You know it did get a PS2 sequel, right?    Nightshade does have some different mechanics (i.e. no soul-sucking sword) but it’s pretty similar and a good game.

But if you mean another sequel… yeah, I’m on board with that!

      •  Nightshade isn’t technically a sequel though you could play Hotsuma in it

        • Sebastian Lothian

So unless it has the same main character it isn’t a proper sequel?

  • neo_firenze

Funny that this was right next to a story about the much maligned DmC.

10 years earlier and a generation behind, but even though I’ve yet to play DmC I’d still feel pretty safe putting money on PS2 Shinobi as the better stylish 3D action game.  That’s more a comment about Shinobi being so, so good… but yeah.

  • Budgiecat

Finally!  Now all we need is Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga I & II (after they work out the kinks), Virtua Fighter 4 EVO, and Gungrave Overdose (because all those games are on EU PSN already)

    • VenerableSage

Now all we need are the above AND PS2 Classics Sega Ages games localized*

      • Budgiecat

buuut I would gladly trade Sega Ages Hokuto no Ken for Arc System Works PS2/Arcade Hokuto no Ken!

    • Göran Isacson

… Gungrave OD is on the European PSN? WELP guess I’ll be making my first PSn-purchase then, because that game is freaking impossible to find, even in bargain bins.

  • ffboi7

I remember this game! It was hard as hell!!!!

  • .

Amazing. Time to get killed off a platform jump, a katana wielding dog, or the voracious katana that feeds off your life bar all over again…Can’t wait!

  • Love love love this game! I was so proud of myself when I finished it on it’s most difficult setting. I had to use Moritsune to do it because Joe and Hotsuma were too damn weak.

  • Love the name of his soul sucking sword “Akujiki”.

My friend thought I was cheating when all the enemies died at the same time by his lightning fast attacks.

  • d19xx

I remember the moth lady boss.
I remember that old man and his stupid Chinese takeout box thing
I remember those dogs with knives, you’re worst than zombie dogs.
I remember how Homura can’t swim. Wtf Sega coolest ninja in video game can’t swim, seriously?
I remember how I put a pillow on my feet, so that I can drop the controller safely when I rage.

I want to experience all that frustration again. Bring it Sega!

  • ismail idris

This game deseves a sequel, give it to us dammit SEGA!!!

    • Ryu Roots

What.  It GOT a sequel.  It’s called Kunoichi in Japan and Nightshade here.

      • .

I remember Nightshade; that was a lot of fun. Not nearly as frustrating as Shinobi though. I do love the inclusion of all the challenge missions, and Hibana’s character design rocks

      • ismail idris

i played nightshade, i loved it :), but i want one in this gen, I WANT ANOTHER!!!

  • Göran Isacson

okay, so once upon a time I actually bought this used, but I never got around to actually PLAYING it… anyone out there that can tell me what I can expect/any tricks I should know in advance so I don’t die TOO much?

    • .

Its funny, people compared this a lot to DmC back in the day, but its a different action game. Where DmC rewards combos with sick weapon styles of all the things Dante can find; Hotsuma only has Akujiki the lifebar eating bane of this game. You have a time limit to kill a ‘set’ of foes (usually 4 or 5); so you dash around like a mad man slicing these things that don’t really kill you (they do pitiful damage) but what they do is satiate the cursed katana.

SO, as long as you kill things fast, the katana gets progressively stronger with each kill. At around 5+ enemies defeated it can ‘one-hit kill’ a boss. But if you don’t know the level and take too much time this thing will be eating your lifebar as you fight mid bosses or bosses or doing some crazy mid air dashing back flipping platforming craziness. Then you’ll throw your controller at the TV or wall…

      • Göran Isacson

Ooh, I did know the sword eats your health but I didn’t know it could get THAT powerful. So a big part of the game is learning how to speed-run through the stages, rather than kill all the enemies, get all the points and buy all the upgrades as you do in DMC?

  • miyamoto

just bring all those great PS2 games on PSN SegaSony

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Considering that Shinobi for 3DS just launched, hope that this game will be able to bring Sega loving this franchise again.^_^ And coming with more Shinobi goodness.^_^
