The Saddest Thing About Grand Knights History Is Xseed Finished The English Text

By Spencer . August 16, 2012 . 4:47pm

grak_aBack in May, Xseed announced they would not be able to release Grand Knights History in North America. It’s not like Xseed wasn’t working on Vanillaware’s PSP game, they completed the English text.

"As for GKH, well, sometimes it’s out of our hands. The text was all translated and ready to go, but the resources just weren’t there. We were as devastated as you guys," Jessica Chavez from Xseed said during a live Q&A with Kotaku.

Chavez also said two of my favorite Xseed titles were among their weakest selling games. "Don’t know exactly which, but Retro Game Challenge and Half-Minute Hero were not particularly popular," Chavez said responding to a question about Xseed’s biggest flop. Half-Minute Hero has a fantastic script, brilliant gameplay that deconstructs RPGs, and at least one tearjerker moment. If you haven’t played that or Retro Game Challenge stop reading and get those now. I think Half-Minute Hero is still $10 on the PlayStation Store too, can’t beat that price!

    No Half Minute Hero II

    No Grand Knights?

    You’re a disappointment, XSeed.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

Look, I was pissed when GKH was announced as cancelled, but I’m over it enough to have bought The Last Story.  Grow up god damn.

    • http://twitter.com/josequijano jose

Hope I am not the only one that thought you did not read the article at all.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

Probably didn’t read the one that mentioned GKH was cancelled quite a while back.

    • Kawashima

Theres nothing that they could do. If the games they’ve published previously had gotten the attention they deserved this wouldn’t have happened. Blame the “modern” gamer.

    • Andar

Did you miss the part where Xseed finished the English text?

    • JazzyMan123

Jeez, what the hell dude. Ignorance sure is bliss ain’t it? Like Stiger said below, grow up.

    • Kris

GKH was not XSeed’s fault. The developer does play a part in localization, and with Dragon’s Crown changing publishers (and price point), it seems that something strange is going on with Vanillaware.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Well someone clearly can not read at all.

    • LynxAmali

       The point.

      ——————————-

      You.

It wasn’t Xseed’s fault. Blame Vanillaware if anybody.

    • FFmax

Do you know how to read? Try harder please.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

Man, this breaks my heart. Half Minute Hero and Retro Game Challenge were utterly fantastic games. Classics even!

  • $3587643

Maybe instead of advertising Xseed’s products

You could tell them to release the script for importers

Oh no wait that’s too cool a thing to ever actually happen

    • Luna Kazemaru

      Lol this comment

    • Blesmi

Because that’s like, totally legal, right?

  • LazuliteLiamz

Xseed is one of the company that brings awesome Japanese games to non-Japanese gamer that would otherwise never happen, I hope Xseed grows bigger, they really deserve it, there’s just so many gems that I would never be able to play due to language barrier, how I wish I’ve picked up Japanese classes when I was younger and have more free time.

  • http://papped.webatu.com papped

    Wanted this game so bad…

  • JazzyMan123

C’mon Siliconera, was this article really necessary? This is pretty old, old news. And you’re making Hatsuu sad…:(

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

I think it is.  It does put down some proof that XSeed was doing quite a bit of work to please its fans instead of people needlessly feeding on them saying they let everyone down by not localizing it.

Then again, you might be right, as a previous commenter can’t even read the article to begin with.  Might be too much on a reader to read a few paragraphs in one sitting.

      • JazzyMan123

If those ignorant ‘fans’ can’t be bothered to read carefully, that’s their own damn fault.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Well, there’s a lot more I want to say about GKH, but I probably shouldn’t! The reason why we posted it is so people know that Xseed did their part and they didn’t want to let anyone down.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

You aren’t trying to hint at someone possibly picking up the pieces of someone else’s work that they didn’t have the financial support are you?

Is this really something you want to tease, Spencer?

        • Kevadu

Seeing how the problem is Vanillaware, not the localizer, why would anyone else have better luck?

        • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Not teasing anything. GKH isn’t coming over. :(

    • Kevadu

While there have been strong hints to the effect that the GKH localization was finished, I don’t think it was ever made as an official statement before.  It’s nice to get the confirmation.

  • Juuu

I’m glad that XSeed got this question, though it’s sad and the issue is sort of long past now. Hopefully now we can put to rest this attitude that XSeed just cancelled it to spite the fans or because they changed their minds or got bored, or something else so trivial. It’s nice to see a real explanation get out and for XSeed to be able to defend against all the misplaced hate they got. Thanks for answering this and being honest.

As for Retro Game Challenge and Half Minute Hero-WHY did these not sell?! They were extremely good games. I think RGC was a victim of piracy, actually, but I can’t be sure. There’s been rumblings that HMH may pop up on Steam, and if it does, I expect we all make up for past mistakes and buy a copy. ;p

    • JazzyMan123

      Blame the audience I guess…

    • http://twitter.com/Zufield Zufield

You can blame both titles not selling on piracy, the audience not being large enough, the Holocaust, or whatever. The point is, they didn’t bring in the numbers XSEED was looking for.

That said, if Half-Minute Hero does show up on Steam (most likely the XBLA release), I’m not going to buy it just for the sake of padding out sales numbers. I played the demo, and it wasn’t my thing.

  • AlteisenX

I’m sad. That’s all I can say really. XSEED if you feel devastated, and want to make it up a little to me and a lot of others… Ys IV on the Vita localization would be *nudge nudge* acceptable compensation…

But seriously, I really hope someday we can see the translation… Even though it’s rather unlikely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stale.laastad Ståle Laastad

This was indeed sad, mostly i feel sad for their sake.
Every post and interview with XSEED gives the impression of a company that actually cares about its fans and stay true to them self.

  • scratchbach

    I love Half-Minute Hero…
    *hug*
    Stay awesome, Xseed.

  • ivanchu77

Man, this is so sad, i feel sorry for them…..   :(

  • SirRichard

And the sad thing is, people even in this comments section are still blaming them for it.

I’d kill for a localisation team as active and dedicated as XSEED are (but focused on Europe), I hope things improve for them soon.

    • JazzyMan123

Really agree with your first sentence, I just don’t get why some people have to be oblivious to such an obvious answer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Rising Star Games are doing an awesome job for that 8D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

I was hoping there’s a chance for this game to rise from the ash but i guess not.  Xseed you tried and that’s good enough :3. Stay Awesome

  • Kevadu

Half-Minute Hero was amazing!  Why haven’t more people played it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yuki-Ra/100000106224021 Yuki Ra

    WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • Monsley

It’s always sad when people’s work and efforts go to waste. :(

Also, Retro Game Challenge is lovely and so much fun – it’s a real pity it didn’t sell a lot.

  • KingGunblader

It really is too bad. I was looking forward to playing Grand Knights History. But I have so much respect for XSeed as a company, and I’m glad they tried. Maybe it can come to Vita someday…

  • neetloaf

I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that Half-Minute Hero did so poorly. What I would do for a Time Goddess so I can go back and get more people to throw money at that game.

  • Lightthrower

They should leak the script o_O. There’s already a partial menu translation, but a full translation is really needed (I have no idea what I’m doing quest-wise when I’m playing…)

    • JazzyMan123

      Are you seriously asking this?

  • Go2hell66

    “Xseeds biggest flop” indeed.

tbh i’m still incredibly angry about what happened with the GKH localisation, regardless of whoever’s fault it was. it really was one of my  most anticipated games next to dragon’s crown. now i just have one giant hole in my heart where GKH was meant to be. i don’t think any game can fill that void -_-

    /cheesiness

really this article was just throwing salt in the wounds…

    • JazzyMan123

It really was Vanillaware’s fault. That’s all there is to it.

  • Foryth

It’s a shame about Retro Game Challenge and Half-Minute Hero, I had a blast with both games.  I was especialy disapointed to hear about RGC2 not being localised.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Retro Game Challenge is an EXCELLENT game! How did that failed again? I think they should re-release the title, maybe as a Digital download for the e-Shop or as a port for PSN and/or XBLA.

  • Tarlol

I am so, so sad about this.

  • http://twitter.com/MPSpam Multipurpose Spam

XSeed.  Lemme have a word with you…just one word.

    Kickstarter.  Use it.

You are a small, dedicated, pretty much on the borderline between big-time small company and indie developer.  You’re what Kickstarter was made for.

Unlike all those other “BIG GIANT AAA COMPANIES” that have abused Kickstarted to hell and back.  Honestly, you’re the ones that should be using it.

Put GKH up on Kickstarter to get the rest of it’s development funded, you’ll be surprised at how fast your funding will come in.

    Keep it classy~!

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I don’t think it needed funding, Vanillaware just needed to program (unless there’s a proper term I don’t know) the English text into the game. However things just got hectic especially with Dragon’s Crown being developed and whatnot. Though Kickstarter isn’t a bad idea for other games.

      • JazzyMan123

Kickstarters aren’t really viable options for localizations.

        • MrSirFeatherFang

Makes sense (from what I read in your link above). Good to know, I’ll probably bookmark it for future reference :)

      • LynxAmali

That’s pretty much it. The English text was ready and just needed to be put into the game and what not.

    • JazzyMan123

They already stated that Kickstarter isn’t a viable option for localizations here:
       http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2012/02/kickstarter-blindside/all/1

And honestly, I’m getting sick and tired of people suggesting kickstarters like they’re the magic bullets to solve every single problem.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/U2UHZLVTHH5EFWNTDCP2MJ4TGQ Nick

    >Xseed finished the english text, but had to cancel
    a;skldfja;sdklfj!

  • Alex Cattaneo

half min hero whas great on dics not psn…and what a bucnh if asshole liars not having enough money to finish GKH.

    • JazzyMan123

      Are you really that ignorant?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Next time sir, we would ask that you read the article before deciding to post such mistargeted insults. This is one case where having a digital download option is indeed a wonderful thing, for the cost of an everyday lunch, one can have an amazing gaming experience like 30 Second Hero in its entirety.

  • Shiki

“Cough” .. man! .. this is just making me cry for my PSP .. like .. it’s really in need for more games .. seriously .. somebody MUST save this console .. but i know .. it’s too late .. and for what ever reason .. i’m sure if this game was on PS3 .. it’ll .. surely be localizied .. though .. i can’t blame them .. since there’s only few people who still care about this console .. and i dunno why .. but it’s really sad .. i can’t always import PSP games from japan .. so i would be happy for any game that would be localizied .. but still .. it’s too rare .. well .. what can we do .. i don’t even know if we will see a new PSP game in the west in 2013 ( or we will ? ) , but i hope , even if it not worth it >0< , some games would be released , and in physical form!! the last wish of my dying PSP!!

    • Anime10121

That was hard as heck to read, but truer words have never been spoken my friend.

  • Hinataharem

It would be nice if Xseed were able to work things out later on down the line once Dragon’s Crown is finished.

    • JazzyMan123

      I kinda think that’s rather unlikely…

      • Hinataharem

Oh its incredibly unlikely. But one can dream

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

Well XSEED, you tired your best … salutations for the effort and trying to bring this game over :)

still quite sad now i was really looking forward to this game

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kalvin-Ang/822784432 Kalvin Ang

It sad to know it almost complete, let just hope it can release digital download version 1 day.

  • Solomon_Kano

Ah well. I’m glad that Xseed at least tried to bring it to us. They did all they could, but poor old Vanillaware had their hands full trying to deal with Dragon’s Crown. I’d have loved to have the game, but it’s alright.

Well, might go check out Half-Minute Hero now, thanks to Spencer.

    • JazzyMan123

You should! It’s only $9.99 on the PSN right now and for the Vita as well. :)

      • Solomon_Kano

Ahh, can’t get it now. I’ll definitely pick it up next time I grab something off of PSN though. How much is it normally, $15-20?

        • JazzyMan123

          That is the price. $9.99.

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh. I thought it was on sale or something. Huh, well that’s even better. Now whenever  I go to get it, I know it won’t take a chunk out of me lol.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

One simple (but possibly ignorant) question: could it have been possible for a studio to outsource the programming of the translation/localization into the game to another studio so this situation doesn’t occur?

Like say, Vanillaware gives their game code to Sony for them to insert XSeed’s localized script, so Vanillaware doesn’t have to use resources that they need for Dragon’s Crown development.

    Just wondering …

    • Solomon_Kano

It’s certainly possible but it’s unlikely since they would then have to pay that other studio. Can’t imagine money is something they want to give up when trying to focus all of their resources on a single project.

  • Anime10121

While I dont know too much about this game, I always try and support XSEED, because they are one of my favorite companies out there with all the jrpgs they release.  So while I wasnt personally looking forward to this, like so many others apparently were, I probably would have bought it anyway to show support.

However, I am glad to know that Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky First Chapter wasnt listed as one of their weakest selling titles!  Maybe that means it’s started to (hopefully) pick up quite a bit of steam, because its DEFINITELY well deserved.  That game is among my top 5 favorite games on PSP and its a shame that so many missed it.

  • Hraesvelgr

To be perfectly honest, I was never hugely interested in this game, but Vanillaware can seriously go fly a kite for screwing them over like that.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

XSeed is still alright with me.

  • Exkaiser

I wonder if, one day, the finished script will be leaked onto the internet for resourceful fans to work with.

That would at least mean their hard work wouldn’t be wasted.

Of course, it’ll probably just get locked up in the big warehouse of cool stuff, with the Ark of the Covenant.

  • Setsu Oh

    psn?

  • DarthSithZero

NO Grand Knights History and Nothing new about Dragon’s Crow Thanks Vanillaware

  • TheFoolArcana

They even finished the english text?!

    ATLUS

    OUR SAVIOR

    PICK UP THIS GAME

  • Clifford Pierre Louis

…Dragon Crown better be the $#!+ after this stunt, started learning Japanese just for this game and ended up importing it, now I can read very basic sentences(1st grade reading level) so i guess some good came from this :P, I’m a glass half full kinda guy :)

  • Brimfyre

    What the junk, Jake?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ivo.hein.5 Ivo Hein

    I’ll once again blame piracy.
If every person who liked thes games and played them a lot had actually bought them, those situations where good games with a reasonable fanbase are considered flops wouldn’t happen.

    • M’iau M’iaut

I think a very valid point had been made when the cancellation was originally made; as a game with a focus on coop, things were going to be a tough sell.

If the CODs and Maddens had not been able to develop a US online presence on the PSP, it is hard to believe a very niche title would have broken through on an already dead system.

  • Yamaneko22

Half Minute Hero is probably one of my most favorite PSP games, it was so damn fun and funny. Its ashame 2 never came over.

  • cj_iwakura

If XSeed wants to send us the script, we’ll hack it into the game.

    I’m just sayin’.

    • JazzyMan123

And lose trust with the rest of the industry as well.

      Just sayin’ as well.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Wouldn’t dare to speak for XSeed, but I would guess they would decline that offer.

    • ANNONNY

People already did translate it almost completely, LONG LONG before Xseed even said they would pick it up..

Really isn’t that hard to do, especially with the types of games Xseed picks up..

  • Testsubject909

For Retro Game Challenge… They should have never dubbed over the original voice work. The kaichou’s voice was part of the appeal of it all and trying to remove part of the charm found within the Gamecenter CX show was just not a wise choice.

    • JazzyMan123

Keep in mind that when XSEED dubs something, it’s never because they want to, it’s because they have to. There are always licensing issues whenever it comes to voice acting in Japanese games.
