By Ishaan . August 21, 2012 . 9:00am

As reported last week during the Gamescom trade fair, Capcom are preparing a free online service that will launch alongside Resident Evil 6, titled, that will track player data and stats. This morning, Capcom released a video of the service’s features, which you can watch below:

Here’s a quick summary of what will do on a player-by-player basis:

  • Track stats for enemies killed, weapons used, medals earned and more.
  • Facebook, Twitter and iOS/Android compatibility.
  • Yield “RE.Net points” for using the service and entering online challenges.
  • Allow players to exchange points for additional Mercenaries mode costumes.
  • Periodical Champion Belt challenges. The belt can only be held by one player.

Resident Evil 6 will be released on October 2nd in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Capcom have confirmed that the game has gone gold and is presently being manufactured. A PC version will follow next year.

“Allow players to exchange points for additional Mercenaries mode costumes.”

Yes! This is how extra costumes and the like should be done. In-game points earned from kicking ass. None of this real money crap. I wish more games just let you unlock stuff from playing, just like the old days…

in the old days they didn’t even have costumes in most games.  In the old days it also didn’t cost as much to make costumes and the like.  Still buying should always be an option as well for people like me that don’t want to go through all the trouble to unlock stuff, I don’t have that time to do stuff like that anymore.

Besides who besides capcom/namco even charges for costumes?

i actually think achieving extras ingame prolong the duration of the game, i understand that we dont have the same free time as adults, but for me it would mean i have more motivation to keep playing the game, if the game is good, though i usually prefer these features on the single player part of the game.

almost all companies charge for customes, from activision to nippon ichi, it depends on the game.

I’m pretty sure RE has had bonus outfits since… 2? Maybe even 1.

           It was RE 2

Square Enix with Dissidia 012. All of the DLC costumes are already on-disc. Most are around a buck a piece. However, a few of the require you to buy a whole new game at no discount to unlock, which included the sprite version of Cecil which you could only get through the FFIV collection, Lightning in Aya’s outfit by purchasing The 3rd Birthday and, if you were in Japan, buy a re-release of another game to get KH Cloud. Gilgamesh has one based on his Type-0 outfit but you can only get that in Japan. It also doesn’t help that despite the different and improbable methods to obtain all of these costumes depending which regional version you got, these costumes exist in all versions of the game. Mortal Kombat also does the same with the MK1 outfits of the male ninjas and MK3 outfits for the female ninjas.

Just gotta give the publishers hell (SF4/SFxT), eventually they will take the hint. Unless it’s EA ofc, there’s just no hope for EA.

Always great to give companies heaps of personal data. Hopefully Capcom will wait a tiny bit before coming up with their own invasive version of Origin or Always ready, always online! …
