Where Does The Title “Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes” Come From?

By Kris . September 1, 2012 . 2:18pm

Metal Gear Solid series creator, Hideo Kojima, shared at his Penny Arcade Expo talk today, that the title of the next major Metal Gear game refers to an origin.

“Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes” is meant to evoke the feeling of the original Metal Gear Solid in the Fox Engine. Kojima says he’s creating this game personally, himself.

Ground Zeroes isn’t Metal Gear Solid 5, however. Instead, Kojima says it’s a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5.

A trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will be made available later today. The game’s target platforms have yet to be officially announced, but Kojima says that the game in its current state is what it should look like on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

However, he added, Kojima Productions are working on next generation hardware as well.

kojima is working on this himself? well can’t wait to see the awkward easter eggss

“Ground Zeroes isn’t Metal Gear Solid 5, however. Instead, Kojima says it’s a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5.”
IIIIIIIINTERESTING >:D Konami is pushing for more MGS games I see. Awesome :D

  • A prologue to MGS5? So there will be a MGS5 in the future…maybe that’s what they are working on for the next-gen console? *fanboy cries*

    My body was not ready.

But keep ’em coming anyway. :)

  • konsama

So we have confirmed an MGS that so far sounds awesome and now we’re getting prepared for MGS5, that’s great, tho i wonder if MGS 5 will be for the current gen or will be on next gen consoles.

    • Kojima working on Next-Gen Hardware = What do you think?

  • SirRichard

Calling it now: Ground Zeroes is going to feature Big Boss fighting in African civil wars in the 1980s, building up money as a mercenary in order to found Outer Heaven as the end goal of the game, possibly even ending with his returning to the US to lead FOXHOUND.

MGS5 is either going to be the events that set up Metal Gear, or the events of Metal Gear told from his perspective.

    Wouldn’t it be cool?

    • I haven’t played OPS yet, but wasn’t it in that game where he builds Outer Heaven? I really should buy the damn HD collection already. *sigh*

Either way, I’d play a game like that. Altough I doubt MGS5 is going to focus solely on Big Boss. I want to see Solid Snake, Otacon, Meryl and Sunny again!

      • SirRichard

If you’re on about Portable Ops, that one was where founded FOXHOUND, after his old unit from MGS3, FOX, went renegade and captured him. If I remember right, this was also the game in which he got the idea of Outer Heaven, and Peace Walker saw the beginnings of that in his mercenary company Militaires Sans Frontières, though that was more of a guns-for-hire crew.

        • Yes, sorry I meant PW not OPS. But thank you for the insights. I really know nothing about the PSP games, because I’ve never had one, but I’m trying to catch up.

    • Domii

      Hell yeah!!!

  • Domii

This is the best time of the year to be a Metal Gear fan. I really hope that this comes out sooner than later. Btw, kojima confirmed it’ll be on the PS3 and Xbox360. here’s the first trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5IVOs5Pxh8

  • timanel1

why old snake again ? :(

    • Solomon_Kano

Huh? Old Snake has only been in MGS4. This is Naked Snake, Big Boss.

      • No, that’s Sam Fisher!

        • Solomon_Kano

Looks like he finally sneaked into MGS lol.

  • kuroneko0509

“However, he added, Kojima Productions are working on next generation hardware as well.”
    Wii U??? :D

    • Wii-U? Hmm… Metal Gear was first released for the MSX and NES. “Ground Zeroes” refers to the ‘Origin’ of something and the first time using the Fox Engine. AND! We have Young Big Boss as the Poster Boy cosplaying as Sam Fisher… What does this mean?

  • OatMatadoQuatro

“a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5.”? But doesn’t Ground Zeroes take place in the past? Is MGS5 going to be after the Patriots or before the first Metal Gear?

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m liking SirRichard’s theory below. MGS5 being the events leading to and during MG told from Big Boss’ perspective could be crazy. Being the prologue implies this leads directly to it, so I’d say that sounds likely.

    • Keep in mind that he could also mean this in a metaphorical sense. That the technology and scope of this game is a taste of bigger things to come in MGS5.

    • Rohan Viajar

don’t forget that “5” is just a number. it doesn’t mean that’s how the timeline goes.

if you can recall Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
the number is higher even though the game takes place wayyyyy before MGS 1 & 2.

    • Mark Fate

Or there could simply be some massive reveals in this game that cause major events in the future. MGS4 finished Liquid Ocelot’s story and Snake is finally allowed to rest before he dies however with the games going back and forth in the timeline there is a lot that can be covered with Snake before MGS4.
I would like to see a game finishing off Big Boss’s story leading into Snake’s (ie rebooting Metal Gear) but I hope Kojima pulls that off with the end of this game. I don’t think it needs two games…
I would like MGS5 to be about a new character though.

  • Just wondering but couldn’t these two have been one article? Instead of two where the name came from articles?

  • Kai2591

It would be nice if it will be available for PC….I have a PS3 though so either one’s fine.

  • This is very cool and all, but seriously Kojima, you said you would be working on Z.O.E 3! Give me something atleast!

Also, I hope they use Richard Doyle, the voice actor for Big Boss in MGS4 for Big Boss here. I love David Hayter, but I never liked how the two characters were completely the same. Plus he’s looking to be getting pretty old here, lets give Richard Doyle a job.

    • I would like to say that ZOE and MG arevin the same universe, but in different timelines. However, we can’t really say for sure if that’s likely the posibility.

  • From reading all the comments below, this is going to mind-f**k me so hard that I have to replay the WHOLE entire series just to follow it again. LOL

  • Göran Isacson

So I see a lot of people theorizing that this will be the game that details Big Boss’s rise to fame, fighting wars during the 1980’s and building up resources to create Outer Heaven. Here’s my problem with this- why is that interesting? WE KNOW HOW IT ENDS.

We know that Big Boss got cynical over the years. We know that he got killed by Solid Snake. The threads are tied up, and I don’t think you could create new ones without messing up the tapestry at this point. Big Boss is badass and all, but his story is DONE, in my opinion. We know where it lead and more or less what happened. There can be no surprises except groan-worthy ones at this point. No, I’d much rather they take the series in a new direction. Perhaps Ground Zeroes will be something entirely different? A reboot? Something taking place WAY after even Revengeance? Anything but a tired retread of very, VERY familiar and worn out territory.

  • On Thursday when it came out that they were working on Metal Gear Solid:Ground Zeroes, myself and a friend of mine who is a big MGS fan were discussing the game, the series, and the people connected to it. Basically it came down to even though Kojima is good at what he does, he really needs to get off the series after these next three (and I hope that’s all but I doubt it) games and start working on some sequels or new IPs. Also when he told me how he keeps trying to downplay the importance of Portable Ops as canon this was my reply:

“Kojima just needs to get his
ass off his head. I admit he’s good at his craft but just because one
game he gives most of the control to his team and feels it did that
much better without him is abit much to downplay it even from a fan
As much as people bitched about Devil May Cry 2,Metroid Other M, and
Ninja Gaiden 3 they are still part of their series respected canon and
it is stupid to try and write them off completely.”
Also with that last sentence, yeh I know the reasons people complained about those games, but trying to retcon an entire series off of one mediocre game really doesn’t make a ton of sense to me even if it’s to draw in more fans and/or regain the ones that were lost. And no, DmC does not count, that’s a reboot. Let it go already.

to be fair, kojima dont really have full freedom on what to work or what to make, he pretty much said his intention was to make peace walker for consoles and label it 5, but konami twisted his arm, the other projects he has been involved haven’t been succesful, at least not financially, proof of that is keiji inafune who left capcom to work in projects that he want, supposedly even  hironobu sakaguchi left a high position in square to have more creative freedom.
